This was our second visit and it didn’t disappoint, you immediately feel welcome when you walk in, the staff are just lovely and the food is superb, the place is immaculately presented but still maintains the feel of a country pub, I cannot recommend this place enough for a good hearty meal in very pleasant surroundings. Very dog friendly too!

After a hard days cycling the King Alfred’s way this pub m,et every expectation! First it serves Wadworths 6x imho the best beer in the uk ( but I am biased and had been fantasising about 6x for about 120 miles). Second it was a friendly welcome and third but definitely not least they produced the best food of any of the pubs on my 5 day circuit. A superb steak and mushroom pie with of course mash and veg all very well cooked. A great ending to a gruelling day!

This evening we ordered pizza take away from the green dragon (buy one get one half price on a tues which was even more of a treat) the stone baked pizzas were absolutely delicious, generously topped with any toppings of your choice from the list and baked to perfection and ready to collect in no time. These were certainly more tasty than the Italian in the local town! £10 per pizza and on a Tuesday £15 for 2 which is amazing value!! We are so lucky to have this place on our door step 🫶🏾

I used to visit this country pub several times a week for morning coffee. The new owner, who operates hospitality units in Bournemouth, thinks increasing the cost of a latte by 25p, is a good way to encourage regular visitors to visit. How misguided. Shan't be going any more. What a pity.

Ordered takeaway for myself and my daughter, couldn’t be happier with the food and service. Macaroni cheese for the daughter was super cheeses so bonus for her :) Portion sizes are really generous unlike some takeaways you get... I would highly recommend either takeaway or going out for a meal there :)

We had visited some months ago and wrote a glowing review but much has changed. The amount of meat was measly. The lamb was grizzly and overcooked on edges. Beef was tough. Veg was poor quality, sprouts nearly raw and broccoli a yellowish colour. What a shame that things have changed as we shall think twice about returning.

Stayed here for a visit to the Bath Christmas market at a fraction of the cost they where looking for in Bath and what a good decision that was. Lovely clean room comfortable bed. Food was fantastic did take hour for our evening meal to come but we where relaxed and it was worth the wait. Breakfast cooked fresh and I got to say was one of the best pub breakfasts we ever had. We had a great time staying here for the weekend. I organised a surprise party for my husbands 60th Birthday and it couldn't have gone better. Steve and Nicky were extremely helpful and the food was good. The accommodation was clean and spacious and there were special touches in the room such as home made biscuits and an umbrella. Highly recommend this place. Thank you for a great time.

Well worth a visit. Set in a countryside village location. It offers a formal seated dining area, a less formal pub area where you can also eat. The beer is well kept and the food never disappoints. The portions are a very good size. There is a nice well maintained garden

A very cold welcome. Not one for out-of-towners. With a relative living in the village, I’ve been here now 3 times over a couple of years, for both food and drinks. Fool me for returning. Ignored repeatedly at the bar, grunted at, scolded for sitting in the wrong place, and had legal tender £5 banknotes rejected outright for being ‘foreign’ (Northern Ireland), this pub’s welcome is chillier than a mother in law’s kiss. Strongly recommend you avoid. Much nicer pubs with better food and warmer welcome elsewhere in the area.

This pub could be a lot better. The main bar area was full of dogs, one was even sitting on a bench with its head on the table. Great if you love dogs, not so great when you're allergic to them or, like me, find a black hair in your food which looked more dog than human. There was an area around the corner which may or may not be dog free, but it is blighted by a noisy coffee machine. The service was quick and friendly and the food arrived fairly soon, but it was rather bland and boring. The meat was dry, the chips were very hot inside while the vegetables were already getting cold. Altogether pretty average.

Excited to try this pub as it's exactly half way between myself and my mum. We met for Sunday lunch and we were initially impressed by the, apparently, recent makeover and friendly welcome. Service was quick but non obtrusive and prices seemed reasonable for what was on the menu. However the food was mediocre to say the least - hard roast potatoes, burnt yorkshires, flavourless gravy and chewy, stringy beef. Dessert was better and homemade but the main course meant that we wouldn't return.

Nice popular pub with friendly atmosphere; I would like to have given this place a higher score if it wasn't for the meals, which were a little disappointing. Our group of four ordered our separate meals expecting to get what had been described on the menu. I ordered scampi chips and peas. First to arrive was a bowl of chips... then my bare plate but for a serving of scampi followed by some other similar plates. It seems you're expected to construct and serve your own meal out of the communal ingredients couriered to your table. After a little while I thought I better ask about my absent peas, this was met with "they'll be coming.." They did indeed eventually turn up and all was fine. I just feel that when paying for a meal, there is an expectation of service where you don't have to plate the food yourself; my dining companions were similarly stacked at this arrangement.

Had a table booked for mothers day here by my mother in law for a special mothers day lunch as it was my first mothers day with my 4 month old daughter, was told that the food here was good, how ever this was not the case, my partner had steak in which he has had thicker slices of ham, the steak was served with chopped mushrooms which were burnt (don't you usually have whole mushrooms with steak) me and my partner had a bowl of chips to share and when I was tipping the chips onto my plate grease followed them (yuk) and there was a pool of grease at the bottom of the bowl, the cheese on my hunters chicken had obviously been reheated as it was rubbery, the roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings that came to our table were burnt, also no changing facilities for my daughter as the man behind the bar (the landlord I think) said I could use the skittle alley to change her, a room which had a few tables in, in which I had to change my daughter on, not a very good experience food not at all worth the money, not a very good experience for my first mothers day !!!!!

Although the buns were slightly too large for the burgers which is a minor detail ... Everything was very tasty.Service was good the girls where very friendly and helpful .

Visited here a few weeks ago with my family having been coming here to eat on and off for the last few years. The restaurant was quiet for a Friday night but the waiting staff were quite slow still and it took a long time for us to get drinks. We ordered three courses and while the starters were lovely the mains were rather disappointing. My father had the fish pie on the specials board which was removed after he ordered it. When it arrived it was very small and mostly consisted of mashed potato and actually very little fish. My main of mango chicken was nice but nothing special so overall were we're quite disappointed. The pudding of waffles arrived and were huge, but the actual waffle was also disappointing as it was hard and appeared to be store bought? There are several other pubs local that do better food for similar prices so won't be returning again for a while.

We have often dined here or spent the evening in the bar, and returned on Sunday for a family celebration meal for 4 adults, and 2 children. Nachos for one vegetarian, pasta for one boy, chicken nuggets for the other and these meals were fine. 3 adults had a roast and although the taste was there the meat, roasties, parsnips and Yorkshire puds had all obviously been cooked a while and left heating. We returned the potates once and the replacements were a little better, but the parsnips were just too tough to eat, the Yorkshire the same and all together the roast items were very disappointing. The veg were potentially fine but not enough for 3 adults. What we hoped to be a good meal ruined for us - and we HAD booked well in advance. Unfortunately other family members have had the same problem in the past with the roasts. So this Sunday - somewhere else........

My partner and I popped in on the off-chance, faily late into Sunday lunch service. Although clearly very busy, the waitress, who was polite and friendly, quickly found us a table and took our order. I had the liver and bacon, from the main menu and my partner had local boiled bacon with bubble and squeak and poached eggs, from the specials. Our meals, which were served promptly, were both generous portions, freshly cooked and very tasty...so much so, neither of us could manage one of the very tempting puddings! The lone waitress continued to work swiftly and efficiently, throughout our visit and yet still managed to make us feel important and very well looked after ...Well done!

Went here based on reviews and I fail to see what the excitement is all about. We were greeted by presumably the landlord critcising his staff to locals across the bar , not a great start.. followed by a grunt and a point in the direction of our table. No explanation of the menu or where to even find it was given. We had 2 course (which the deal "oddly" enough only extends to a starter and main rather than a main and dessert) Had the soup which was faid and the Sunday Roast which was quite lame and I would go as far as say it was reheated / microwaved. The lamb was a shank type cut and was tough/reheated and the roast potatoes well past their best! There waiters were a couple of young school aged kids which whilst they weren't overley efficent were polite enough and tried to accommodate everyones needs. We heard another couple across the room talking about the same comments as us so this wasn't just us either! Certainly wouldnt rush back :)

Came here for Sunday lunch after reading some reviews and was expecting something a bit special. Nice to see a big traditional pub buzzing with locals and visitors. Not so nice to see the boss having a go at his young staff and then criticising them further to the locals once the poor lad was out of earshot. The young staff here are exceptionally polite and do their best to help you but I'm afraid they're let down by the chef.We both had butternut squash soup and both had lamb. Soup was ok but lacked much flavour.Roast Lamb dinner presented on cold plates, lamb shank was tasty but overcooked, gravy was completely tasteless and thin and the roast potatoes had really tough skins like they'd been cooked a while ago and reheated. The menu is confusing, it states mains at £8.95 and 2 courses for £10.95 but that doesn't include starters apparently and they tell you that when you come to pay your bill. Doesn't make much sense, soup has to be cheaper than all of the desserts on the menu.Anyway, we were handed a £5 off voucher for our next visit which won't get used. If you present and cook good food you don't need such gimmicks. The pub's website gives the impression that it's top quality pub grub / fine dining. It definitely isn't!

My wife and I decided to celebrate with afternoon tea at the Red Lion. It was a blazing hot Sunday in late June, but we were very thoughtfully guided to a beautiful spot in the shade just at the edge of the courtyard. Our waitress, Angel, was absolutely excellent. She was cheerful, chatty, and attentive but also very professional and not at all intrusive or pushy. The included refills of tea or coffee kept coming as promised, and the atmosphere was both friendly and relaxed. Our compliments to the kitchen staff, too, as the quality and quantity of the food and drink easily justified the price in our eyes. All in all, I would not hesitate to recommend Sunday afternoon tea at the Red Lion.
