The Great Wall in Waverley

Been using them for years. They changed hands a while back and for a while the quality dropped a little but has recovered. I am a regular and the food is very good. They do some gluten free options for my wife which is great. Love the capitol ribs. The previous cook did beatiful rice and now it is not quite the same - a bit dry - but otherwise we are very happy with them and they are always friendly and helpful.

Review date: Sept 2023 The Great Wall isn't as it was under its old owners (which was the best Chinese takeaway myself and my American best friend ever had). While the portions of rice and noodles I received last year were good, there was only about half as much sweet'n sour pork (Hong Kong style) that I would have expected, the noodles and meat felt like they could have been cooked a better (the chicken felt a bit tough and the pork a bit undercooked), and everything tasted far too fatty, oily, and salty. On the three times I've visited it since the reopening (over the span of two years), every time I've come away with utterly agonizing stomach cramps; something that didn't happen under the old ownership. As the persons I interact with are nice, I didn't want to give the Great Wall a negative review, but I honestly cannot recommend this restaurant anymore. Every time I've been there has led to food poisoning, painful stomach cramps, and disappointing food.

The takeaway tonight was severely disappointing, S&S sauce was almost purple and tasted weird. Everything we ordered was not the norm! Been using the Great Wall for years and travelled a fair distance to get it as it WAS the best around for miles. Sadly not anymore.

Ordered by phone set meal for two very good value and much improved based on previous experience. Keep it up we will be back.

The Chinese food is always too Salty. Today I ordered chicken and chips. Chips were half cooked and the chicken was really dry. The gravy was like water

I had delivery tonight had to pay cash? Stange as website set up to order online. Food average at best delivery driver sounded just like person that took order. Shame reading other reviews was hopefull of good food. Not dry chicken and microwaved rice and noodles!6

The food and portions are very good for the south East, however on this occasion they were obviously having staff issues which meant a delay.

Not a restaurant but a takeaway. Under the new owners it has returned to greatness with good sized portions to that you would expect and tasty food. Must recommend the hot & sour soup 👌🏼

It had amazing food and a really fast take-away, the man was really friendly. It's now my favourite Chinese place and the decorations were great. I highl recommend it...

Normally good but had a number of dishes last night which all tasted the same and bland. Shame as 80% of time it's really good. Maybe we just have to factor in that sometimes it will be a miss not a hit.

Contrary to some other reviews I have found a lot of the dishes to have more flavour since new ownership. Not just more salt and MSG, actual flavour. Always very friendly staff. I guess it might depend on what you order but I would still recommend The Great Wall. I've tried the restaurants around Haslemere and Liphook and lived in London 20 years. It is certainly no worse than most others I've had in the same price range. It's not really Chinese food, none of the takeaways are, but on the grand scale of things I think it's still worth frequenting.

After initially being disappointed with the quality of food from the new owners. I stopped going here. I returned a month ago and the last three takeaways I have had have been exceptionally good. The food has now improved hugely and It is back to being my go to Chinese takeaway in the area. I would suggest it is better than ever. Thank you for the improvement.

Best Chinese around by a country mile! Food is always fresh, well prepared, good flavour and hot all the way through. Brilliant place.

First time visiting under new ownership. We used to really like Great Wall under last owners. Food last night was really poor. Ordered beef with black bean sauce and chicken with cashews. The meat was tasteless and unbelievably slimy. Never seen or tasted anything quite like it. We will absolutely not be using again.

Wow what a change, new people have taken it over, I have been using this Chinese for many years 30 mile round trip because its the best around, I was greeted by a happy gentleman but quickly realised it wasn't the same lovely old owners, He promised the food better than before and that's a big statement, it wasn't in the slightest it was greasy and bland and so expensive unfortunately still charging the same as previous owners with terrible food, I'm paying for it today and my sons not at school, Goodbye Great Wall but I won't be returning, if the old owners see this thanks for many yummy years and I wish you the best in retirement. Some advice for the new owners its lived off an amazing reputation please don't spoil it your food needs looking at.

Great food and a service that goes beyond what is needed.

Great food, hella saved my life in the summer when i worked at the awful PGL nearby.

Rice was all stuck together in one clump like week old Paella rice. Sweet and Sour sauce was thick glu and painfully how can you deliver foul tasting pancake rolls. A treat turned into a never again.

Used to be great, now food tastes good but full of salt and MSG leaves a raging thirst at 2am

We have used this Chinese takeaway for 20 years but sadly the owner retired and the new owners are not producing the quality we were used to which was excellent. The takeaway we had last night was horrible. Curry sauce was orange and very strange, the chow mein was very salty, chips were like cardboard and had obviously been reheated. Onion raw in chilli crispy beef. We will be going somewhere else in future, such a shame.

Pleasant, although some of the dishes - e.g. the duck and the mushroom chow mein - were surprisingly spicy.

I believe the Great Wall is in new hands. I was a regular visitor and really enjoyed their food. I ordered a take away which was Chicken balls and egg fried rice. Wow what a difference, bullet pieces of chicken and porridge rice, it went straight to the bin, I shall never return,they really need to up their game or there will be no business.

My family have always highly rated the Great Wall in beacon hill as our best go to Chinese take away. But we visited Friday for it to seem like different owners? New menu, new front of house and an extremely long wait. Over the phone we was told 45 mins until pick up, on arriving to collect food we waited another 30 mins before our food was given to us. On returning home to eat our food well it was very very different. The chicken was all slimy and texture was disgusting. Huge mushrooms in the curry. Sweet and sour sauce so thick it wouldn’t pour out. The beef was chewy and slimy. We was very disappointed and will not be returning.

Delicious Chinese takeaway, friendly service and quick. Ordered over the phone and only took 20mins (although it was a Tuesday). The food was very high quality. My husband said it was the best Shredded Beef he's ever had! The Shrimp Chow Mein was extremely yummy. Also the shrimp toast was fantastic.

This place has closed and is going to be renovated into a flat. Sorry I was told this by somebody who I saw outside!!!. Which is obviously wrong. Will try it out

The best Chinese takeaway in Surrey! The fact that it's been around for a couple of decades speaks volumes. Food is always hot, consistent and delicious, there's always plenty, too. The owners are really friendly and extremely accommodating regarding my life-threatening nut allergy – they always remember the issue and ensure my food is safe each time we order.

Visited some family while here and we stopped in here to grab some food, very good place I enjoyed it. Similar to what I’ve had in the states with a little smaller portion which was nice because we really didn’t need the extra size very good place if you’re looking for a good Chinese food place in the area.

For over 25 years this place has served excellent food to take away. Some of the family who have been there all along recognise telephone callers by the food they regularly order - impressive!

I have used this take away for over 15 years and it has always been consistently good food. I wouldn't go anywhere else. Their crispy shredded beef is excellent.
