Walked from Cromwell with our two dogs to have a roast dinner at The Great Northern. The portions are very generous and the food is delicious. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the locals make you welcome too. This was our second visit and the food was just as good as our first visit.

We decided to do a circular walk from Cromwell to Carlton on Trent. But a padlocked gate meant a long diversion. Our planned pub stop at Carlton had been converted to a house, but the householder told us of The Great Northern Inn "not far - just over the A1". It was getting late and a fresh wind was reinforcing the need for a comfort break. We were doubtful it would be open at 2:45 pm even less was the kitchen likely to be serving food. Well it was a treat - a lovely welcome, it felt like a safe Covid environment, delicious 'comfort' food which was very well cooked and presented and drinks at the right temperature. The toilets were clean too. Being mid afternoon there were very few customers which suited us well, but obviously not so great for the business.

The Great. Or there used to serve a busy station, long gone, so is left in an odd position quite a walk from the nearest village with a chain link fence and tracks as the view from the beer garden. Inside is nice with comfy sofas and fires in the winter - very cosy. Food can be hit and miss but the Sunday roast is well received.

This is a unique place. A homely pub with American-size substantial portions of very good, solid English grub, alongside the East Coast main line. Train enthusiasts and youngsters alike were there when we visited and a level crossing, with its warning signals, gives plenty of notice to get the cameras and video cams ready when a train is approaching. Great fun all round and it's worth going just for the food. Excellent value for money.

My son and myself have just visited this pub for their Sunday carvery, it was advertised on the side of the A1 north of Newark on Trent, to say we were disappointed is an understatement. The price I thought at 7.95 for a standard size carvery was good. The vegetables if you can call them vegetables were disgusting, the mashed potatoes were literally “ slop”, they ran on the plate. The cauliflower was black, I shall definitely not be going back there again, and would certainly not recommend to anybody.

We popped in for a drink and ended up booking for our Saturday evening meal and Sunday Lunch. Nicky and the team were very welcoming and the food was excellent and very good value. Recommend the Sirloin and the Salmon both were cooked and presented well. Sunday Lunch was excellent, both the beef and the pork, accompanied by a variety of vegetables. You won't go hungry. Puddings are excellentl. The Jack Rabbit (brand is not available at many places) Merlot was excellent and reasonably priced. If you're travelling up the A1 don't pass the Carlton on Trent exit if you're looking for good food and drink in pleasant surroundings, with the added bonus, if you're a train spotter or even if you're not, of the trains passing by.

We just stopped in here on our way home because we were starving after a trip to London and we can't believe how terrible it was.For starter we had vegetable soup and it was so bad we couldn't finish it. It had something horrible floating about in it and when we told the waitress (apologetically I might add) that we weren't able to eat it as it "tasted a bit funny" she replied "it's homemade we use the 6 day rule". 6 day rule? What the hell?! We were both in shock. A few minutes later she came back and finally apologised saying "I'm very sorry you're right it does taste funny so I've thrown it away". Nice to know they test their food before they serve it!Main was slightly better. We went on a Sunday. We got 1 Yorkshire pudding which was burnt, half a roast potato, a tiny bit of mash potato and enough gravy to wipe my finger on and lick!Obviously we didn't stay for dessert.I cannot stress enough how bad this meal was and if it hadn't been for my wife not wanting me to make a scene we wouldn't have paid a thing. Stay away from this place at all costs!

Our wedding party of approximately 20 guests all met up the night before our big day at ANOTHER local pub where we had booked earlier for us all to eat. We were told as we tried to take our seats that the booking hadn't been recorded/they were too busy etc. so we called the Northern at 21:30hrs and asked could they feed 20 people.... We were told to come down and we'll see what can be done. We arrived and were told that the kitchen had closed but if we were happy to have a limited menu they would try and help us. We gratefully accepted and said just bring out 20 plates of food, no matter what it was (to be fair, the chef ended up pulling in regular customers to help her behind the bar/in the kitchen so we were in no position to be fussy) and half an hour later we were all eating. There was gammon, pies, pastys, jacket potatoes etc. The food was good, the service was good and the staff were fantastic considering what they had managed. I would like to say a massive thank you to all the staff/locals who helped dig us out of a massive hole that night. From Marty & Becks

Varied menu and we both opted for tomato soup to start, it was really very good, piping hot and we hardly waited any time at all. Our mains were steakand ale pie and fish and chips for my partner, we both really enjoyed our mains, the fish was a big portionand having had a small taste, it was very fresh will verr nice batter. The only thing we would do differently on our next visit would be one portion of chips between us as we just couldn't manage the portions we were given. The service was faultless and our food was delicious. We thought the prices were very good and as i stated at the begining of the review we will return and have no qualms recommending to others.

Dropped in on the way back from Cambridge when I saw the sign on the A1. Didn't look too appealing from the road but better when viewed from the car park. Some nice outside seating and childrens play area but it was too cold to stay outdoors. The interior is fresh and airy with three real ales on handpump in addition to the normal selection. We sat in a very nice roomy dining area. The menu was not extensive but a reasonable selection. Service was efficient and friendly with the food arriving quickly. The children really enjoyed their cheese and ham pasta, my wife's Sunday roast was well prepared and plentiful; my Chicken, Ham and Leek pie was delicious with an ample portion of freshly prepared chips and mushy peas. The hostess (presumably the Landlady) was very efficient and welcoming. The waitress was friendly, always smiling, checked everything was ok and kept the drinks flowing. Although the pub has mixed reviews I think they will deservedly make a big success of the place if they continue as they are.

On a trip up A1 saw sign for the Great Northern Inn, as we only wanted a sandwich thought it would be nicer to go to an inn rather than purchase a garage sandwich. This was a big mistake, we both ordered the beef sandwich as it was Sunday and they did a full roast we thought that it would be a safe bet, think again - the beef although plentiful was like old leather and as another reviewer put it, it tasted as though it had been cooked a couple of weeks ago. The beef was in a mushy flattened warm baguette served with chips and gravy, the chips were fine, my wife managed one mouthful of the sandwich but as I was hungry I forced most of the sandwich down (it was a struggle) and I ate all of the chips. The only saving grace was that it was cheap.I would not go there again even if I was dying of hunger, I would travel a few miles on up the A1 and go into MacDonalds and I don't like MacDonalds

We had been here previously last year at some point and unfortunately it was awful! Everything was over cooked and it tasted like the beef was cooks 2 weeks prior, the glasses has lipstick on them. We had then heard that a new chef had been hired and it was much better, so gave it the benefit of the doubt and had another go. We went for a Sunday roast. It had all changed and looked very formal, had a nice greeting when we walked in drinks taken etc, sat down and 2 minutes later our food came out. The beef was very very undercooked! Difficult to cute, the potatoes were undercooked, and there was only enough veg for 1 person and not a good selection at that! The best thing was the Yorkshire pudding it was homemade and cooked to perfection! It's such a shame because it has had so many hands over the year and could be a lovely country pub!

We stopped here for lunch after seeing the pub advertised on the side of the A1. It was certainly a welcome sight, seeing somewhere to eat that was not an "Ok Diner" - as everywhere else appears to be closed nowadays.Upon asking what food was being served, we were told that the only available option was the barbeque. This was fine with us. The pub did have a restaurant attached though, which appeared to be having a day off; despite the advertisement of Doom Bar outside, the only ale available was an Irish Stout, which wasn't bad.The barbeque was pretty good. The burgers were a lot better than the sausages. The onions were a great addition, as was the mango chutney dressing. Unfortunately, the sausages were slightly too large for the buns, and the buns fell apart quickly. The burgers were delicious, however, especially at £2 each. I would like to return, if passing along the same route again in future; it would be a lot better than an "Ok Diner".

Just enjoyed a really nice Sunday lunch at the Great Northern, they have just got a new chef and I really enjoyed his cooking. I had roast beef and the others had gammon, there were other meats on offer as well as haddock. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and included parsnip, carrots and a cabbage leek and peas mix which was delicious. Roast spuds were great, the Yorkshire just right and the mash was really creamy. To follow we indulged in home made desserts which were absolutely delicious. Well done chef. We will be back to try the normal weekday menu which we are hoping will not disappoint. James the landlord with his dad and family are working hard to resurrect the pub (it was closed up for several months) and there efforts are starting to show fruit with building and interior improvements coupled with live music hopefully seeing business grow. Keep up the good work guys.
