We had the Sunday carvery which was very reasonably priced(could have even have been a £1 dearer and would have been good value) You don't have to book and service is really good. Some of the vegetables were a little underdone but then I prefer my roasties to be golden brown. This a common problem with carverys though. As a carvery it was excellent and would return again

The restaurant is situated in the grounds of Buckfast Abbey, which is a wonderfully calm, peaceful place to visit but not the subject of this review. Sundays from 12noon is carvery time. We have been to a number of them and attached are photos of the menus at one of them, which are typical of the food available. All food is beautifully cooked and well served from a table in one of the dining areas, a chef carving the meat and an assistant serving some of the vegetables, both very friendly and welcoming. On a separate table various sauces are laid out for you to help yourself. One of us has several food allergies and so we particularly are pleased with the listing of the allergens against all vegetables and desserts. There are two inside dining areas and also a covered outside terrace with views of the Abbey and grounds. Long queues can await the start of the carvery and so we suggest arriving at around 1.30pm if you can wait! We have found a long queue once then too but on every other occasion there has been little or no queue, but still the same availability of food. The main course is served as above but desserts have to be collected and paid for separately, from the main self-service restaurant. This is the one draw-back we have found, but normally find we are too full for dessert anyway. Note that meals other than the carvery are available from here on Sundays too.

Admittedly it was 2.30pm when we arrived hoping for a late lunch. The choices were very limited and we found the staff and service very poor. I had a soup which was OK and my husband chose a sandwich which was uninspiring. Several ladies having afternoon tea approached us to ask if we could help them open their jars of jam. We were happy to do so and then helped others who were struggling. Definitely need to change the pots for the predominantly older clientele. The restaurant setting could be very special but atmosphere was lacking when we went. Staff just seemed disinterested.

Amazing carvery with plenty of choice of vegetables and 4 different meats. All perfectly cooked. Also a veggie choice. The bottle of cider we had was £6.30, very pricey! But will definitely be back for the carvery! Well recommended.

I have visited the grange many times over the years but unfortunately it’s another restaurant that seems to be losing its touch. The service has always been a bit weird. The food is average and the price does not reflect that, it’s expensive! But I expect they make quite a bit of money because of where they are situated. It’s a nice place for a drink and small bite to eat but that’s where it ends. It has got a nice view if you sit outside. Used to have a much friendlier charm from what I can remember when I was younger.

Beautiful roast here today - worth every minute of the 4+ hour round trip. Meat always beautifully cooked, great selection of vegetables. Staff ALWAYS wonderful. Love how allergens are advertised on all the signs etc so you don't need to feel like you're making a fuss by asking - or just avoid all foods that 'may' contain something because you don't want to make that fuss. Only grumble is the distance from home otherwise we would be here every week

We have nothing but praise for your staff and the food that you produced. Everything was spectacular from the start, the set up, the table lay out and the presentation of the food. The service the warmth and friendliness from all your staff. We all had a great Christmas Lunch. Vegetables were served hot and taste was fantastic, I loved that my plate was hot as well as my food. The service was top notch checking everything was ok and that we had the correct dish. I thought the food was delicious and beautifully presented. I was very impressed that they could produce food of such a high standard when there were so many guests to cater for at once. The service was also lovely; the staff were nice as well as efficient.

Booked to have the special Christmas dinner with a friend. BIt of a disapointment considering the high cost £24.95. Starter was mackerel pate , tasty but there was only a teaspoonful on the plate . Main course , turkey was quite nice but vegetables were exactly the same as being served in the main restaurant for a quarter of the price. Best bit was the Xmas pudding , but I bet that was bought in.

We popped in after a walk around the beautiful abbey. Were delighted to see three freshly baked cakes labelled as gluten free. Then noticed they all said 'may contain traces of gluten and wheat'. Spoke to a lady and asked if they are gluten free or not, and she said yes. I tried to explain if they may contain gluten then they cannot be labelled as gluten free as it's a legally protected term- they should be labelled as non gluten containing ingredients. She shrugged her shoulders and said that's the label they come with. So nothing to eat for us. Be warned if you have allergies, they haven't got a clue.

On a rainy day, we stopped for tea and coffee whilst visiting the abbey. Whilst the drinks were hot, the tea for one was in the smallest pot we've ever had with no extra hot water to top it up. "Large" coffee cup is smaller than a medium on the high street. This was poor value for £5.50. The cafe area also looked like a school canteen with hard chairs but was busy, probably because of the weather. Such a shame in a lovely setting.

I have been coming here a few times over the past few years. There is no great choice of dishes, but the food is adequate, considering that they mostly cater for tourists. I should perhaps mention, that they seem to have cremated my toastie rather than toasted it. So much so, that the rest of the Toastie was inedible and had to be thrown away. The other food was acceptable.

Young grandson's fishfingers were oily and poor quality, daughter's salad was limp and tasteless, my ham and eggs (so looking froward to this) tasted of compressed ham and slippery, oily eggs. Pity. And we had to pay 10p for a sachet of sauce and even had to queue up to get glasses of water from the coffee counter. And the staff were clearly having a bad day. Awful food, awful service. Pasty was dry, panini was partially warm! Not welcoming, terrible service. Won't be back again!

We arrived before the crowds: about 10.30am. Hot food was already on the servery, and staff were waiting to serve. The coffee was hot and the scones delicious- and I am picky about my scones! We had no problems with service, as other reviewers have found... In fact, as I was wondering whether there was a place to clear our tray to, a young male member of staff greeted me with a warm smile and said that it wasn't a problem, he would clear for us. There was ample room, and we had a very pleasant break here.

Although in a wonderful setting, We find the service very and slow and the meals are invariably very cold by the time we reach the table, My wife had a jacket potato whose jacket was so hard she was unable to cut through thus making it inedible.Covers would seem to be left off meals at the serving point.Prices overall are quite expensiveShall not eat here again, this restaurant needs a serious shake up in many ways

We checked in at a nearby hotel and as they didn't serve lunch and it was pouring with rain we popped into the The Grange cafe / restaurant to eat. It was reminiscent of a motorway services restaurant in that you take a tray and queue at the various sections. Food choice was okay. Hot cooked meals or sandwiches, salad or pasties. Some limited desserts. You can help yourself to some foods and be served with hot cooked meals.Hubby had cottage pie with veg and gravy, I had a Haggerty Pie which I had no clue was just mashed potato and cheese as there was no description but it looked lovely enough to choose and it was nice if a little bland. Pastry was lovely.Woman who served the food was pleasant. We ordered coffee on the next section. I asked for a mug of black coffee and had it thrust at me instead of being placed onto my tray as is the norm. It was almost a dressing on food! The young lad who served the coffees then moved to the till and seemed to struggle with the costing for both our food and the chap in front of us. He was very unfriendly and made us feel like a great inconvenience. Customer Service training desperately required here. A little pricey for what you get but food is satisfying.Seating area is large and very canteen like. Cleanliness was fair. There is a covered decking area overlooking some of the grounds so you can enjoy food in all weathers. We noticed that there were Lots of elderly visitors as The Grange is in the grounds of Buckfast Abbey so really could do with friendlier staff and slightly cheaper prices but saying that the Abbey is free to enter so probably balanced out. Wouldn't eat there again

Despite lots of signs saying kids eat for £2-50 during the summer holiday it is not at all clear which food this is. So ended up paying nearly £10 for 2 children's meals and £7-50 each for an average adults salad. Staff not very helpful. It is not surprising that the restaurant was almost empty.

Sampled very tasty chicken, ham and leek cornish pasties, cappachino and tea. The tea was a fair trade tea which my partner wasn't so keen on but that's a matter of taste.

I have been to The Dolphin Inn several times now and the staff are always very friendly and welcoming. There are homemade traditional pies and roasts offered on Sundays, and bar snacks during the week. I had forgotten my scarf and Sam had very kindly looked after it for me. I wish them a very happy and successful 2020!

Amazing level of service from one of the ladies at The Ridge Café. I want to thank the member of staff who offered and brought out to the car park, our order to me and my two rescue dogs, one of which, new to us, is very nervous following traumatic times in recent years. It was raining but this lady absolutely wanted to do it, and the dogs were able to meet her - one was enthusiastic and the new boy just looked puzzled, probably wondering who was so kind to bring out this meal to us. It was great, gentle, exposure for ‘new boy’ and a highlight for me too. I’m sorry that I don’t have the lady’s name but she was so good, thank you!

My friend and I lunch here most Mondays usually having fish and chips with the best french fries I have had. The fish is delicious with thin crispy batter. I cannot praise the staff enough for their friendliness, and attention to detail which makes it a pleasure to go there

We was on a pub tour of the area and passed this on a way to another pub and thought “oh this looks quaint” sometimes the most impromptu pubs are the best and this one certainly is! Four ales were on draft we opted for the salcombe gold Which was excellently kept. I loved the laid back atmosphere with dog friendly sofas. They have a beautiful boxer dog named boots who greets you on arrival who is loving in nature with people and dogs. Very chilled and dog friendly and I will certainly visit again and stay for longer when I’m next in the area. Whatpub online does not hype this place is much as it should.

We brought our grandson here after visiting the castle. he had the child's chicken and skinny chips plus juice whilst us adults enjoyed tea, and the fish dishes of the day. All was attractively served without having long to wait. Sensible prices which made our meals good value. Plenty of choice on the menu. Ample parking adjacent to the farm shop & cafe.
