Room was dirty, cockroaches found, spider in every corner and staff didn’t care when told. We booked a two night stay for a funeral and staff said we should have made them aware - obviously we had more important things to deal with. However when told about the dirty room, they did nothing.

A party of four adults arrived at the Grange Thurston today, for an afternoon tea and a possible evening meal the following evening. Arriving at the front door, wearing masks, to be met by an officious man, presumably the manager. We were told we would need to wear masks in the bar and restaurant. I stated that it would be difficult to eat and drink while wearing a mask. The response was that it was government regulations. We were then told we need to register using the NHS app. This involved scanning an app into a smart phone. I asked what if a person didn't have a smart phone and the response was it was government regulations. I tried to question the policy but the person continued to talk over me. My understanding is that an alternative, such a pen and paper, should be provided. At this point a woman and child walked past us out of the hotel, without masks. This person had no concept of customer service. In addition the regulations do not come in force today and he has no idea of the regulations. We therefore left and the hotel lost the custom of the price of afternoon tea and the potential of an evening meal of four people. In these difficult times hotels and restaurants need to be aware of regulations and do everything to encourage not discourage customers. I would recommend you avoid this establishment until suitable competent management is in place.

Disco DJ didn’t open his mouth once , definitely not worth £42 such a bad experience instead of a fun party night , who ever was in charge should be ashamed of themselves, the worst party ever 😡

Albeit a little tired looking, the service was lovely. We took a drink in the bar whilst choosing our food. Then taken to the dining room and the table. Beautiful clean white tablecloth with linen serviettes. We chose the Moules, a large plate arrived with a warm speciality warm roll . Delicious flavour and plenty of mussels. My quest chose the chicken and tarragon pie, served with mashed potatoes, carrots and French beans. A delightful presentation and enjoyed by my friend. I chose the steak ( which on a Friday is on offer) with Stilton sauce, three times fried chunky chips, a grilled tomato and mushrooms. The steak was cooked to my request. The chips were the nicest I have had in a long time. We were too satisfied to require dessert. So to recap, the place looks tired but the food is excellent and staff very good. We will be back

Excellent service from the pleasant staff, and unhurried evening meal even though we arrived late. Large room overlooking the gardens, comfortable furniture, great nights sleep. Large en suite, shower a little weak, but clean and tidy. A comprehensive Breakfast menu, well cooked good quality. A very pleasant and quiet place, recommended as something very different to a large bland Corporate hotel

We had a standard double room which was quite small and tired. The decor needs updating and there was no milk with the tea/coffee facilities (I was given a jug when I went to ask for some) but everything was clean and the bed was good. There were only two other couples staying that night so they could have upgraded us and shown off a nicer room. However it was fine and we had a good night sleep. By far the best thing about this hotel is the restaurant. We had a three course dinner and it was honestly one of the best meals we have had in a while. The breakfast the next morning was really good too. I can’t recommend it enough! The hotel clearly needs a big injection of money to get it up to date, however if you’re looking for a cheap weekend away with excellent food then you won’t go far wrong with The Grange.

Booked this as a surprise birthday dinner party for my mum. Booking process was fairly straightforward. We had 26 guests coming and had to pay a £100 deposit with the balance and everyones menu choice due 2 weeks before the function date. We were allowed in early on the day to decorate the table - which was laid out nicely - but we were not allowed to put anything on the walls. The room itself is quite dated and in need of a refurb. The actual function went okay, but with only one person bringing the food out and one person serving it was a case of don't wait just eat as food was going cold.Food was average, some things were nice some not so, some plentiful and some not so. We were only allowed 3 hours in the function room which we were advised on booking but were told that we could then move the party to the bar which is open until after 12. So at 10:30 this is what we did, but within 5 minutes of occupying the bar, the female manager asked me to tell everyone to keep the noise down as other guests were complaining. It was a 70th birthday and all anyone was doing was talking. We were not being loud or lots of laughing so I was a bit perplexed as to the alleged complaints.10 minutes later she came in again and said that there had been more complaints. I asked her to look around the room and point out who was being loud and I would happily tell them to be quieter - she couldn't so advised me that she would be closing the bar early. This quite obviously upset our guests leaving them a bit miffed as they had done nothing wrong and quite honestly spoilt the night. If minor noise was going to be an issue why did they not let us stay in the function room where we were quite happy? As we were leaving the male manager was rude to my children in the way he spoke to them. A number of our guests were staying at the hotel and when they made their way up to their rooms the male manager was again rude to them. On a better note the waiter/barman that worked that evening was lovely and very friendly, with nothing being too much trouble. Between the dinner and the accommodation booked we probably spent approx. 2k - perhaps the male manager could use some of that for a customer relations course. A good night spoilt by the minor grievances. Not somewhere that I would return to or recommend.

There were 18 in our party and we had a good time. The room was set out attractively. We arrived on time for 'welcome' martinis. This could have been better organised as we waited for quite a while before receiving our drinks even though all guests arrived gradually over time. The service was good for all courses. The portions for some courses were very generous and perhaps could have been reduced to take into account number of courses. The Ravioli was tough although filling was tasty. There were plenty of vegetables to accompany main course however the dauphinoise potatoes were discoloured and tasteless. The vegetarian main course option looked very stodgy. After the meal, the casino event helped fill the time until midnight. The disco managed to get most people dancing. Overall the meal was ordinary and our evening was made a success by good company.

I always said when I started to review the places I'd visited that I would never write badly about a venue, preferring instead to alert the owner/manager to any problems, as one should at the time. However, despite being good value for money amidst a tranquil and peaceful setting in an imposing old Tudor style building, there lies within a few issues here. The first is dirty window sills in the bathroom and a rickety toilet seat. The second is over-priced food, which is not particularly well cooked and a bar/restaurant which is as devoid of atmosphere as it is of people. So why am I breaking my vow and writing a critique as opposed to my usual compliment? Because I want the management team to be given the chance of doing something on the back of this article and not delude potential visitors with their glossy web site pictures which exude a venue that is warm and inviting and whose facilities and standards could cater for a wedding with Michelin quality food, when it is evidently not that at all for the average guest. The current owners are seemingly striving to bring the hotel back to its former glory. Well they've got quite a way to go. The staff were rushed off their feet at times, which is neither necessary nor professional, so that aspect needs to be looked at too. The Grange could be a really superb place. All the management have to do is take a careful look at the detail. It's in a lovely location and is very peaceful, so please go along and sample it for yourselves, but equally be wary of what lies within and be prepared for a little disappointment along the way.

We booked a last minute 2 night stay B&B for £122. Staff were all great. Food was great too. We arrived on a Friday and had the steak night special (half price Sirlion on a Friday). This was cooked perfect to our requirements. The full English breakfast was the best I've had. A good quality bacon and sausage. My poached eggs were cooked just right. You could have cereal or they did a veggie cooked breakfast. Several juices and tea/coffee was on offer. I cannot fault the staff or the food. The Aspal cider on tap was refreshing. Our room was warm and comfy. The hot water was piping. The bathroom was clean. There are tea/coffee facilities in the room too. The Hotel is easy to find and not far from Bury St Edmunds by car about 10-15 minutes. The closest railway station is Thurston. Yes like some reviews say the hotel is quirky and the carpet on the stairs has seen better days. This is a lovely old house with character. It has a car park and an outside lawn area. They cater for weddings and have a couple of log cabins. We will return again in the future.

Stayed very recently to attend an evening function. Staff were very helpful and the meal, considering nearly 100 people, very good. No complaints there. However the room we were first allocated was small, low ceilings, bed felt uncomfortable: the en suite was impossible to access without hitting one's head on beam (which my husband did). The basin was tiny, no shelves or anywhere at all apart from the floor to put toiletries etc. The area around the wc was carpeted and didn't look too healthy. the curtains didn't cover the whole window -.when pulled across they didn't cover the sides. Complained to staff who then moved us to an adjacent room which was just as small but at least we could stand up. Bed was comfortable but there was only one bedside table (which had formed part of a built in headboard in the dim distant past (like 50years ago!!) and one lamp. There was nowhere other than the bedside table to put the kettle which meant you couldn't access the light. The curtains had come off their hooks and runners and just sagged terribly. There must be some decent rooms in this hotel to earn 3 stars but so far (second time we have stayed - thought it couldn't be as bad 4 years on!!) we haven't seen evidence. So disappointed because we booked 2 months prior to event and the cost was £100 which is extortionate for what we received. Breakfast was just OK, but no yoghurts or fresh fruit which to my mind should be de rigour. The scrambled eggs, while tasting sort of Ok looked dreadful, strange colour. Will definitely think twice about staying again. But, as mentioned, the staff were I believe fairly embarrassed but their hands were tied. Not a 3 star, have had better 2 star in London.

I came here with a group from the Thurston bowls club last winter. The food was very mediocre, reminiscent of school dinners. I needed to use the ladies after the meal, before I had my coffee. I am in a wheelchair, which had been mentioned when the meal was booked. Upon asking for directions, I was sent to the ladies, down a ramp(!) along a corridor. I was unable to turn into the door, but I could see that the cubicles were too small for a wheelchair anyway. I returned to the desk, and the embarrassed young man told me that they didn't have another loo... So I didn't drink my coffee and we left rather hastily! This year the Grange was booked again, I'm not sure why!, and the lady who booked the meal received a letter asking for £85 for me to use one of the chalet toilets in the grounds of the hotel. My daughter has made several phone calls to the Grange to complain about this charge, she has now been informed it was' a mistake' !!! Suffice to say I will not be going there again...

Oh dear! We returned to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, having had our reception when it was under the previous ownership and I'm afraid it's not at the standard it once was.On entering there was no one to greet us and when someone did appear they didn't acknowledge us and walked passed us. We were then waiting for a few minutes before he returned and welcomed us. We were the only people in the bar and restaurant, but it was an early lunch, so we thought more people would arrive. The food on offer was not cheap, but sounded delicious, so we had 3 courses and each course came out in good time, which is not surprising as we were the only guests throughout the entire 2 hour duration of our visit! Each course was well presented and tasty, but still somewhat over priced. The hotel offers spa facilities and the 'music' I associate with playing whilst having a treatment was on in the bar and restaurant and after a short while it got repetitive and rather annoying! Surely some nice lounge music would have been better?Another disappointment was the man serving us (the manager?) in that, despite us telling him it was our anniversary, he showed no interest in us being there and being as he had no one else to serve we thought he might have come and chatted to us, but no. And having paid the bill on leaving we were barely acknowledged whilst he remained behind the desk.Such a shame as the venue is lovely and holds many happy memories for us, but on this experience we won't be in a hurry to return!

Stayed here back in Nov 2013 and enjoyed breakfast so was happy with my daughters suggesting we eat there one evening during our post Christmas visit. My wife had some kind of stuffed mushroom thing as a starter. She immediately said that at best it was luke warm. We called over the waiter and he took it away, bringing back a starter that was as it should have been in the first place. Not a great beginning to the meal.To 'cut' (no pun intended) to the chase, my wife first complained that her steak was difficult to cut. Accepting that steak, even £20 worth of sirloin, sometimes has the odd stringy bit in it, she agreed with the waiters offer of a steak knife. I had started mine reasonably successfully but things quickly got worse. My wife was telling me she still couldn't cut the steak and I was having the same trouble. Both had huge, dense pieces of grissel running through them and the whole of one side of the steak was really tough. The waiter took both away and the guy in charge came over to us. He was very apologetic and said that although the steaks were cooked perfectly ( which they were), he agreed that they were unacceptable. We were offered another main course which we both refused, one failure a night is embarrassing enough and we didn't want to experience another. We were told immediately that we would not be charged for the two meals. We were then offered a free dessert. My wife, having had the benefit of a starter, declined but I was happy to have a dessert having had neither starter nor main course. It was lovely. We were then brought a cheeseboard (about £9 on the menu) that we hadn't ordered and invited to accept it as recompense for the poor steaks. This is exactly the kind of response one would wish for from someone who cares about the reputation of a restaurant. Unfortunately, despite the other four meals being fine, the evening had been spoilt and was not going to be recovered by any amount of apologies.

Have just come back from a Christmas party meal at the Grange. Don't often write reviews, but was really disappointed with the experience. Was made to pay full amount for meal (even though had already sent deposit) before been shown to the table by a very stroppy woman, who put us in a bad mood before we were even seated. We had members in the party who were not able to attend, but had to pay full amount for them. When I asked for a jug of water for the table I was told to go to the bar and get it myself (by the manager of the Grange). Being 8 1/2 months pregnant this was a surprise. The girl behind the bar was very helpful - and when I asked her regarding complaints she told me they regularly receive complaints. I spoke with the manager Vipule who was again incredibly rude. He explained the waiters were too busy on party nights to do jobs like bring water to the table and continued being very rude about what he thought his role was. His tone and manner was incredibly defensive and overall blunt. It appeared the only thing he was interested in was ensuring they received as much money as possible. Food was ok and came out in good time but we had to ask for coffees to be changed as the milk which came out was off. All in all would definitely not recommend for service, although waitress and waiters were working hard and effectively, manager himself was certainly not a role model.

I booked this restaurant after reading last years rave reviews. I paid £10 deposit for 8 people. When the receipt arrived the letter said that if your party reduces you may have to pay the full amount . I thought it must be to protect them from people booking 30 people and only 20 paying after all that's what the deposit is for. Unfortunately one of our party dropped out and we were made to pay for her place even though we gave lots of notice. When I rung to object I was told that their conditions were not up for debate! Apparently the deposit just books your seat.Anyway moving on to the party night. The casino consisted of just one roulette table and one blackjack table. This was not enough for tha amount of people trying to play. The large room where we ate in was only decorated by a Christmas tree no decorations. The tables looked lovely. We could not fault the food and service. The staff were friendly and cheerful. When asked for more gravy it appeared quickly and with a smile. The DJ was very good changing the music to keep the dance floor full.Overall we had a good night slightly spoilt by knowing that we'd paid in full for someone that wasn't there.

On sat evening we and family members met at the grange for a meal,in the past we had visited the grange many times and had a enjoyable time. As soon as we walked in the hotel thought it looked scruffy and sad, in the bar we noticed two light bulbs out which should have been replaced. We were called into the restaurant and were told the pork was all gone fair enough we then ordered two of us wanted the soup which was fish then to be told none of that left either were offered tomato not nice,to cap it also we also had ordered a bottle of wine to be told they had not got the one we wanted either.what is going on.My meal was chicken stir fry and noodles I hate to say this the noodles were cold and the stir fry salty did not eat much. Such a shame we were not asked if we would like coffee. It used to be so nice at one time in fact my daughter got married there could not fault it then.times have changed

The food in the restaurant exceeded my expectations. I've eaten here several times and the food and wine were consistently good. The staff give the impression of having been very well trained and are also very friendly. It's a very pleasant place to stay.

We had a lovely lunch for a family birthday celebration, so range of ages from 50's upwards. We were in a room overlooking the gardens which was lovely & no-one else was in that room, so we had "private dining" which was ideal & gave us time to enjoy the lunch with no hurry from anyone. We were looked after pretty well considering a wedding was also taking place in the hotel. The food was very nice, but the selection was quite small - 4 choices for each course, although we all found something we liked. The waitress was brilliant, having some great banter with us.

We loved our stay at this beautiful hotel. We were just in Suffolk for one night and this hotel was perfect for us. Our room was immaculate and extremely spacious. The staff were happy, helpful and friendly at all times and the breakfast was delicious [we had eggs benedict]. I would more than happily stay in this lovely hotel again. We had a wonderful stay :-)

The first time I have ever felt this strongly compelled to write a hotel reviewPOOR QUALITY, POOR VALUE, AWEFUL FOOD, NO ATMOSPHEREI appreciate opinions and tastes are subjective however, I feel I should give my evaluation for the Grange Hotel to help any potential visitors and/or the hotel (thought they might need a couple of pointers)I base this review on experience, visiting a numerous hotels with varying standards over the last 15 years of business trips in commercial property (previous to this, 40 years being a butcher, the relevance of this will be apparent further down)Date, Duration and Rooms Booked…31st October, for 1 night and 2 standard double rooms bookedReason for Visit… Brief Business TripWhy I Selected this Hotel…Proximity to Bury St Edmunds, overall look of hotel and great website, good looking restaurant in the hotel so we didn’t have to worry finding somewhere to eat after a long day.THE REVIEW:ROOMS: Upon arrival the standard rooms as expected. This was the best description I would give them, but none the less they met the required ‘standard’. In hindsight, I would have booked for an upgraded room so as I wasn’t in “servants quarters” as my business partner joked!EVENING DINNER: I was expecting the food to be spot on when my wife found the hotel on the internet. We thought the food looked amazing in the pictures and sounded good too, also supported by 2 good Tripadvisor reviews. We were wrong. There was an extremely limited menu, hence why we both went for belly pork. 3 main issues1)Quality- it was boar pork and without wanting to sound arrogant, as a butcher I know when the quality of meat is not right (smells and tastes foul). My business partner also concurred. Obviously, I’m quite shocked the chef did not know/care! 2)Quantity- It was tiny portions. After looking at the website I knew it wasn’t a ‘quantity over quality’ type dinner which was fine by me. However, a cheap cut of belly pork (sorry, boar belly pork!) that comes no bigger than a box of matches served with a swoosh of puree and potato, I liken to some taster menus I have sampled. Not a main course.3)Value for Money- I do not think the food above represents value at £18.00, I’d rather pay more and get better and at least end up half way full without a bad taste in my mouth. We had to order additional sautéed potatoes (way undercooked) and chips at £3.00 each to accompany the morsels of food. BREAKFAST: Ever the optimist, I hoped breakfast would be better. Wrong again. In my opinion recooked bacon (I have had this in other hotels a couple of times as well, not just this one, not that that makes it any better) and the more concerning part, the sausages neither tasted nor smelt as they should. We had a big question mark about them and neither of us ate them! TO SUMMERIZE... it is pretentious without the quality it needs to back it up. Should, no MUST do better. A brief comment on the atmosphere also, there was none, it seemed to us the hotel was like a ghost town. It isn’t that we wanted something different than what we were expecting; we just wanted pleasant, enjoyable food and a comfortable night for a quick stopover in nice surroundings. It makes my blood boil when people moan and groan without trying to rectify the situation first. Upon checkout we therefore noted the problems we had with our stay and were told“I will tell the management” Make of this what you will.We will however will be looking for alternative accommodation and dining venue upon the next visit.

Our family ate in the private dining room on Boxing Day to celebrate my mother's birthday. The owners were extremely welcoming and the waiter/waitress very helpful. The food and wine was of a very good standard and the Chef even wrote 'Happy Birthday' on my mother's pudding plate which was a nice touch.Children were also well catered for.

My brother and I took my mum and the rest of the family there for Sunday roast today. She chose The Grange because she lives a couple of miles away. She's taken me to so many different restaurants for Sunday lunch around this area over the years and to be honest they have all been pretty dire! Thank goodness she finally suggested The Grange! This was quite simply the best Sunday roast I've had for ages and I've been eating them all around the country for over 50 years! Three of us had delicious roast pork with masses of crackling, 'just right' roast spuds, divine little baby carrots, green beans and a wonderful broccoli mousse. All topped off with home-made apple sauce and lashings of gravy. My son had a burger that looked fabulous (it was so big even that greedy git couldn't finish it!). However the pièce de resistance was the pudding... I chose the bread and butter pudding... OH MY GOD! Divine! I think I would drive there from London just to have another bread and butter pudding! My mum had the chocolate torte which she said was lovely and the others had the apple pie and ice cream which they also said was delish. There were six of us and the bill came to £118 including wine which I topped up to £130 which I thought was very well worth it. I'd highly recommend it and will make sure we always go there when I visit my mum in future.

Popped in on the off-chance of getting a gluten free meal. After checking we got a table with a menu with quite a few gf options annotated on the menu. Had battered prawns with a cajun dip which the wife enjoyed. I had the chicken skewer not gf but very nice. Staff very friendly and helpful. Reasonably priced and close to where we were staying.

Very sorry to say our meal was mediocre, which is a shame as I would love to support this community local pub. I felt the menu choices were fairly limited, the only main special was the pie - roast pork and leek, which I thought an odd combo for a pie. I had the chicken burger - the bread was that floppy cheap sort of roll that comes ready cut, the burger was just OK, nothing special. The service was very good however, no complaints there. Maybe we just hit a bad night.
