It’s a busy Saturday night, the bar is stacked with dirty glasses, cleared by regulars, and the bar manager is sitting in the garden with friends while the barman struggles to cope. This local pub is floundering.

Four of us went and had a couple of beers each. Very reasonable prices, well kept beer and friendly staff. Good atmosphere, dog friendly, eclectic Juke box. Small but very nice pub.

What a great experience from a traditional proper local pub ! On the off chance visited this great pub in the centre of Penarth ! Proper old fashioned carvery with help yourself to veg and gravy just Ike your mum has made , with a fabulous selection of beers, lagers etc etc just great you need to try it !

Very friendly and mid range (for Penarth) prices. Nice to have a pub near the TC with a garden.

Great food. Ridiculous portions. Surprisingly cheap! We turned up during a national rugby match and the atmosphere was amazing. Still gave top service despite being very busy. Would highly recommend.

Wouldnt reccomend this place. The bar staff are very rude and I witnessed a man being refused a drink because of the colour of his skin. Very racist. Wont be visiting here again.

First visit, just poped in for a drink. Barmaid was friendly and there was a good crowd of people in which was surprising for a back street pub. Good selection of drinks, definately would go again.

Yes! Proper pub, comfy, full of locals, little beer garden, excellent music choices and a great array of beers. Grey trees and VOG options on cask. What a great find.

Lovely being back at the lion for new years. The staff are so lovely. Special shout out to Amy, Dani and Aimee. They were super welcoming and it’s lovely to see some new faces behind the bar. We’ve heard there’s a renovation that’s happening in the next week or so. It would be lovely to see some new things on the food menu and perhaps a shift in the drinks menu a smidge. The crowd that pops into the lion has changed a bit and it would be nice to it compete with other bars with offers on shots etc. jagerbombs, baby Guinness etc. every other pub in Penarth does something and it would be nice to see the lion do the same. Aside from that, it’s my favourite pub in Penarth. Highly recommended.

Haven’t been to the lion for a while. Thought We’d give it a go tonight. My partner ordered fish and chips, I ordered steak and onion sandwich with chips and onion rings. Partners fish wasn’t even cooked, my steak and onion sandwich was lovely. Chips were awful. They forgot my onion rings and then when they did bring them, was just a load of batter on the plate. Not sure whether they have a new cook in there, but tbh was the worst food we’ve had in a long time.

Food was not good steak over cooked scampi over cooked, love the pub but food, never again, wish I went to the chip shop.

Excellent find for Sunday lunch. Good value roast chicken or beef with food on plate rather sharing bowls. Regular was plenty. Only downside was wife is vegan, gluten and nut free but had big portion of sweet potato fries and lots of salad. Lovely friendly pub with excellent service. Will definitely go again next time there

Very disappointing i went on the website there was nothing about booking, no app to download . I emailed in advance nobody got back to me. So went up to pub greeted with you have to book. Very disappointed

We toured Wales on our bikes and we made this our local when we were out for food and a drink,fantastic boozer with a nice balanve between old school and modern,loved ot.

Lovely food.. The burger n chips were delicious. Staff and locals were friendly. Came across this by accident but glad we dud. Had a very enjoyable evening.

The Lion is our regular and we brought my parents here for dinner and to watch the Lions on tv. The new chef has brought a beautiful new selection of food and the curry I had was amazing. I’m always such a fan of the food here and the staff are always amazing. Big shout out to Craig, Carys, Anwen and Alex for the brilliant service

Been going hear for years+absolutely loved the food untill 3 weeks ago! I had gammon+chips +it tasted strong of fish as I don't think the oil as been changed in months . They don't peel the potatoes for the chips either! It was almost unedible but I eat most of it as I was so hungry. Please landlord! Go back to how it used to be as I miss eating there so much.

Went to Golden Lion with 2 friends to watch football and have a meal on 3 December, the day before new restrictions were imposed. We had to book, but that was fine. The food we had: 2 x burgers and 1 x steak was fabulous. It was far superior to what you might expect from a traditional pub. The burgers were fantastic, steak tender and cooked to perfection. The chips were lovely as well. The cost was fantastic, food and a pint for under £10 - an absolute bargain. COVID restrictions meticulously observed. Will defo be going back.

Having been back a few times since lockdown has lifted, we finally got around to ordering some food off the new menu. My partner and I both had the Texan burgers and a side of halloumi fries and it was beautiful. The food was hot and most importantly, delicious. I am a particular fan of the new chips and the rosemary is a lovely addition. Nice to see safety measures implemented with hand sanitiser readily available, a one way system and track and trace sign in sheets at the bar. They already implemented the rule of a maximum of 6 to a table so the new measures brought in are already in place here. The staff were lovely as always and a big shout-out to Craig for cooking up a storm and to the lovely bar staff Amy and Alex. Can’t wait to pop back soon!

Lovely pub, enjoy each visit shame they changed the menu to one that is more expensive with the usual classic pub favorites now substituted for more trendy food but not classic pub food. Where is Gammon and egg, Pie and chips, sausage and mash, proper salad not trendy lettuce leaf with a bit of coleslaw. Things move on but not always for the better. Having said this the pub is good as are the friendly staff and always good beer and wine.

Food can be hit or miss, particularly the Sunday carvery. Several times the food was cold.

Good pub to watch sport , good real ales and a great place to socialize with the locals. This is a proper pub , with good prices. Second time I have reviewed this pub , last time was a year ago and it still has the same vibe. Not a classy pub to impress someone , so don't go on a date night there

It's hard to find a proper pub these days, this is one of a few left, great beer selection , does food which is top class and Paul the landlord is a top guy.
