We get a Chinese from Golden Lion once a fortnight for the last 6 years or more, Fantastic food every time, we have tried other Chinese takeaways in malton but always go back to the golden lion, only thing I wouid say is DO NOT order through BIG FOODIE online it is alot more expensive order direct with Golden Lion

Called in for dinner. Very friendly, lovely proper village pub. Service was good. Not a large menu but food was lovely. Very reasonable priced. My partner had the treacle pudding and he said it reminded him of homemade school dinner 😁 he was very pleased. We were amazed it wasn’t busier. Would definitely recommend it. If you want proper home cooked food that’s not poshed up to charge twice the price then go here.

Have visited twice this week on our family holiday. Sunday we had a Perfect Sunday roast followed by delicious puds.. My husband raves about the lemon meringue. Jill, Ian and becca were really welcoming and could not have been nicer...we returned Thursday for pie night which cannot be missed. Homemade pies which the whole family loved. Great food, a warm welcome and a genuinely lovely local.. Will be back in December x the Tyler family x

.....this pub was such a find. I passed it on the way to my campsite and noted it to return later. The menu is not extensive but that's fine. I originally opted for the curry but on finding it was korma I was persuaded to opt for a pie by the landlord "You'll not be disappointed by a pie" ....... He wasn't wrong either and it really was the best chicken pie I've had and the pastry was to die for. Th dessert menu is amazing with a huge variety of different sponges with the compulsory custard. I in fact opted for the meringue nest, the likes of which I have never tasted before. The most delicious homemade meringue filled with homemade ice cream, cream and summer fruits......it just couldn't have got any better. All in all, this is a great village pub run by very friendly staff who take time to chat with you. Just what a village pub is all about.

We were staying at a caravan park nearby which we chose as it had a local pub within walking distance - that pub was The Golden Lion. Locals had told us the food was lovely so we were bearing it in mind as somewhere to eat at later in our trip but we decided against it after our first and only visit! We read online that it opened at 6pm, so our party of nine, walked the short distance to arrive at 5:58pm precisely... we all checked our watches as the door wasn't open! We sat out the front and waited for it opening. After a few minutes and with no signs of life, I wandered around the back where I spotted the beer garden. A few of our party went over to check it out and I spotted a woman coming from out the back door of the pub. By now it was around five past and so I asked, "do you know if we can get in to the pub this way please?". The woman, looked me up and down, took another draw of her cigarette and snarled "No you can't. It's not open yet", turned and walked away! Off I went back around the front with my tail between my legs! After a minute or so, the front door opened. Even though from inside, the nine of us would have been clearly visible, I was surprised the landlord didn't look out to greet us as he opened up...! Once inside my partner looked at the pumps to see what beers were on and asked for a pint of Guinness. When the landlord said "we don't have draught; we have cans" my partner said "okay, I'll have something else" and chose one of the hand-pulls but he was told "we don't have any of the hand-pulls." So he opted for a lager as the only draft beer. I had a G&T. Friends all had lager too given the limited choice, and a couple of lemonades for the kids. When my friend asked for more ice you'd think he'd asked for the moon on a stick the look he got and the huffing and puffing that went on! Seeing two packets of crisps on display (one ready salted, one salt and vinegar), I asked if he had any more. He said "you'll be lucky" and pulled out a basket containing one more bag of each flavour. He said "I'm struggling with crisps at the moment." I asked for the two packs of salt and vinegar. Fair enough, he may have had a rush on but I can't believe a bar would let their stock of crisps go so low as only four bags... and only two after my purchase! We decided not to stay for any more as we'd intended. Nor did we return later in the week to try our their food - maybe with a friendlier welcome we'd have given it another chance, so unfortunately we can't comment on the quality of the food. In a nutshell, I'd say The Golden Lion appears to be a typical cosy country pub but it lacks any real choice of beers and bar snacks and certainly lacks the warm welcome you'd expect of a place like this. We love a friendly country pub and tend to spend most of our evenings in them when we're on a camping holiday so the Golden Lion could have made quite a bit of money from our group - if only we'd had a warmer welcome!

If you’re looking for a home cooked Sunday lunch, look no further. Had a fantastic meal today - served in two sizes - I got the large but couldn’t finish it all, so next time I think I’ll go small as the small is like any other large meal! Loads of fresh veg, mash, etc and a gravy boat. Love that. Meat was delicious. We are quite local to the place so will be back every time we hanker for a home cooked Sunday lunch but can’t be bothered with the prep! You won’t be disappointed. Best thing is that this place is a little off the beaten track so you can literally walk in and get fed without worrying about whether you will get a table . Lager was lovely too. Very cold very fresh.

Called here recently with a friend and I'm glad we did. Unlike many village inns which are now rather pretentious and expensive and don't like drinkers, the Golden Lion is quite the opposite. There was a cosy fire as it was a chilly Sunday and although we weren't eating there were a few items on the menu that sounded rather tasty and the prices appeared very reasonable. I would certainly like to re-visit to eat. The pub appeared to be used by locals and that says something, doesn't it!

We were staying at Stainer's Farm, Little Barugh and on Friday 2 November 2018 three of us walked the mile and a half to the pub and arrived at 9.30pm. We were annoyed to find it was shut! I rang and I could see a gentleman appear and answer the phone but he just confirmed they shut and gave no explanation. I realize that country pubs in remote areas can struggle but Flamingo land is only two or three miles away and each day at about 5pm literally thousands of people leave the park after a busy day and face a drive home. In the mornings why not leaflet new arrivals with a map and tea time menu and invite them for an early evening meal at the pub? Some may stay on and give plenty of custom for the rest of the evening.

Called outside the pub on Saturday 03/11/18 to view the menu at 11.45am and thought let's give it a go as they open in 15 minutes. We (four of us) sat outside waiting until, who I presume was the landlord, finally opened the door at 12.08pm. No welcome at all as we went inside and the response when we asked about ordering food was even less welcoming..... Despite no mention on the menu of not serving food on Saturday's, we decided that the grumpy, bordering on being unforgivably rude landlord wasn't overly interested in securing our custom. Hence we moved on! If this is the normal level of service they offer and you would prefer a warm, friendly welcome, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

My family and my wife’s family were staying at flamingo land on a week long camping trip 8 of us in total 5a/3c as it got towards the end of the week we thought we would go out for a meal so looked on trip adviser for somewhere to go and found the golden lion a few minutes down the road with good reviews I thought great so off we all headed. As we entered the pub we were greeted by a dog (lovely dog) didn’t see a sign anywhere to say pets were allowed in but we petted it and walked past we took up a table in the back of the eating area. We All choose what we wanted and went to the bar were I ordered i wanted a mixed grill to be told we have non! Ok. How about a t-bone we have non! We only have normal ones 9oz sirloin so ordered that rare so after a while all the meals came out witch all looked really nice and I got my steak witch wasn’t most of it was fat witch when I picked it off the steak was the size of a toddlers hand and it’s wasn’t rare and after paying £15 for it I was not happy so sent it back and then all hell broke loose I could hear every word the chef/cook was shouting WHAT THAT WAS A NINE OUNCE STEAK!!!!!! Bellowed from behind the kitchen door so the server brought back my steak as it was and put it back on the table. And along came the landlord with her he said the fat was meat witch I quickly pulled apart and showed him it clearly wasn’t then saying well no one has never complained before about! And walked off a few minutes later he returned with a vac-Paked steak pointing it at me saying this is the 9oz steak you had. Clearly it wasn’t because mine was a lot of fat with a bit of steak attached to it and his how dare you complain when no one else ever has attitude kind of sucked so in the end I ate the chips onion rings and mushroom and left the rest the only reason I ate what I did was because I’m a type1 diabetic and already took my insulin so needed to eat. One of my family members also overheard one of the people not sure if it was the owners or staff saying if we wanted anything else they were going to refuse to serve us witch I didn’t find out till later in the evening. Other than that the other meals were fine my steak wasn’t and the customer service was somewhat to be lacking.

Arrived 6.45pm, ordered 6 adult meals and 2 kids meals. This is a very small pub, with few tables that allow dogs. Meal took ages to arrive but it was freshly cooked, so that was fine with us. One adult meal ordered was not satisfactory at all, but after we complained, the behaviour of the cook and owner was no less than shocking. Cook was shouting her head off, the owner was very aggressive in his bahaviour and language towards us in front of 2 young kids and 2 teens. I have never experienced this in any pub or restaurant, anywhere in the world!!! Service was unprofessional, aggressive and not worth the money. This pub is only geared up for residents in their very tiny village, they are unprepared to tolerate tourists and families guys. This is the worst review I have ever had to make on trip advisor, and to top it off, they were overheard saying that if we wanted to order any deserts etc they wouldn’t serve us!! £100 later, without any deserts for the kids, we left the place shocked. Not a family environment, not a tourists stop, not good service, and not a nice place to be.

The pies were a very good value meal but the gammon served to one of our party was only half a piece in my book. Yes,they were busy but groups arriving after us were served before us and we had no apology until one of us went to ask how long we might have to wait. A very good plateful of Sunday Roast Dinner (choice of pork, lamb, turkey, ham, beef) home made yorkshires and tasty gravy. The downside was our tables were separated because we were located in the bar due to having dogs (our choice to bring them). This was a Sunday Roast worth travelling for. Visited (again) today for Sunday lunch, having made a promise to my husband that I'm never cooking a Sunday roast again whilst it's being served there (have now held this promise since January 2016). Had the 'small' roast beef, my husband had a mix of roast beef and roast pork, all accompanied with a hot dish of freshly cooked vegetables, roast potatoes, mash and the most delicious gravy since my Grandma's (an accolade indeed). The roast pork, which I tried a couple of weeks ago, is sublime - tender, moist and so tasty. The vegetables were really fresh and so nicely cooked. I'm a very happy and very full customer, having devoured my lunch earlier today!! My roasting tin will lie dormant for a long time yet.

After a long day at Flamingo Land we were a hungry family of 6. We don't like to just turn up unannounced so my husband did a quick search on here and called ahead. The lady who answered the phone was not helpful at all! When asked if they had a table for 6.30 we were informed that they already had a table of 6 booked for 6.30. Hubby said no problem, could we eat at 7? The lady ermmed and arghed for a little while and then 'sulkily' stated that there was only 2 of them in the kitchen tonight but it should be OK, then went on to ask quite aggressively, 'is there kids wi ya'. My husband said, you know what, it really doesn't matter, we'll eat elsewhere. The lady then started to retract and explain she was only asking, probably realized how rude she was being. Wow if that was the level of service over the phone, we could only imagine what it would have been like if we had gone there! So rude and clearly didn't want our custom so we did just that and went elsewhere!!

We have visited the Golden Lion on numerous occasions, for food and ale, and have never been disappointed. There is always a good choice of locally brewed ale (Wold Top plus a couple of other guest beers which have been different each time). The food is excellent, there are always a few specials on the board, as well as the main menu, and it's all home cooked on the premises. There's a good choice for vegetarians - a few meals on the main menu but always ask about the specials as well (eg spinach and mushroom lasagne or butternut squash and fennel lasagne - a delicious change from the usual tomato-based one). Portions are very generous. Sunday roast dinner and pie night on Thursdays are also wonderful (but always best to book as they're very popular!) The bar is dog friendly, and there's also a dining room plus a beer garden. We have never been made to feel more welcome, by Ian and Gill the owners, their staff, and all their regulars. My husband and I are lucky enough to live in the same village as this lovely country pub and whenever we're at home on Sundays, we make a point of booking in for a roast dinner. Everything is prepared (with love) from scratch in this pub. The meat is locally sourced and beautifully cooked. The vegetables are always fresh and the homemade Yorkshire puddings are to die for. We usually order the 'small' portion each along with a half portion of battered parsnips - what a revelation they have been - and we always leave full and happy. The pub itself is very clean and very dog friendly. In winter, there's a welcoming open fire and a warm and friendly welcome from the staff and locals. Ian and Gill (owners) made us feel at home from our first visit. I don't drink it, but I am told that the real ales are superb and I can vouch for the cider and white wine! In short, this pub ticks all of the boxes for us: dog friendly; open fire; great beer; friendly people; clean; fantastic food; stunning location. Well worth a drive out to - recommend booking first. I have rated this as a mid-range price eatery as I'd never refer to Gill's food as 'cheap eats', but I would like to emphasise that the Golden Lion represents excellent value for money and the Sunday roast in particular is amongst the lowest priced and best quality I have seen or eaten in a long time.

This year for the first time I took along my dad & step mum to the Thursday pie night (so 3 generations) I was a little bit worried as to what my dad would think as he is very much into fine dining & wines but he was unbelievably impressed. Fabulous home cooked food and a great price and we were made to feel extremely welcome by the staff. In fact as we had such a great time my dad decided to cancel his booking at a different restaurant the next day and instead we returned to the Golden Lion where again the food and service could not be faulted. With excellent food, beers, service, and a warm welcome from staff and locals every time, we can't recommend The Golden Lion highly enough. We were lucky enough to find this traditional pub a few years back whilst on our holiday in the area with our children, since then it has become an unmissable part of every visit. The first thing our son asks when we arrive is "have we booked a table yet?". In all honesty, I don't believe that you could ask for better food or service, especially for the price ( Sunday roasts and Pie Nights are £6.50 per person!), our only regret is that we don't live near enough to make it our local....yet. If you're anywhere near call in for a pint and a meal, then decide for yourself (really can't understand how the previous 2 linked reviewers had a problem), but we're certain you'll enjoy it and be back for more. Looking forward to our next visit, hopefully very soon.

We recently experienced a sunday lunch at The Golden Lion innI have been eating sunday lunches all my life and I have to say that this particular one has to rank in my top 3.All local produce ,home cooked, well presented and extremely good value.Establishments like these, who pride themselves on high quality food ,a great selection of well kept real ales and all at affordable prices should be appreciated and supported more.My wife and I eat out regularly and had a Sunday lunch in another local pub that has been having rave reviews for their food .Not only was it more expensive it was not a patch on the Sunday lunch at The Golden Lion.If you are in the area you have to try this place, pie night on Thursday is a must. Sunday lunch ,for the money, cannot be beaten. Mixed Grill and T Bone steaks are fantastic.(WORD OF ADVICE)book your table in advance.

We have visited this pub on numerous occasions and everytime been made very welcome. The pub it's self has loads of proper old pub character not like these clone pubs that you get all over the place. The staff have always been welcoming, kind and friendly. When ever we have eaten there the food has been of excellent quality, if ever there has been a problem for any of our party the staff and management have always been happy to help sort any issues.I look forward to my next visit.Thanks.P.SThe pie night on Thursday night is sublime.

This pub reminds me of the movie American werewolf i London the scene where the Americans enter a little pub in Yorkshire and receive a hostile welcome. We had been to flamingo land and two of my nieces were very hungry (1 year old and 2 years old) so we decided to stop at the first pub we saw leaving the theme park. Unfortunately this was the one we stopped at when we walked in they were serving an old couple food this was around 6:30 if it wasn't for the food served signage outside we would of found somewhere else, back to the point I asked if they were serving food the owner replied "we are not serving food these are our friends. You have to feed your friends".Wow I could not believe my ears he's feeding he's friends in he's business that sometimes serves food.Obviously he knew we were passing through and we would never qualify for such royalties.I took some crisps out of my bag to feed the babies and he said you can't eat those in here and we were forced to buy he's crisps as the babies were upset having crisps dragged from their hands. You should be ashamed of yourself fella hope your local customers read this review and see what a pick you are to children.Because we stepped in your living room while you were entertaining guests

I do not often write reviews on trip advisor but I was so offended by this place I felt inclined to tell my story to prevent others to go threw the same.I arrived in there with five adults and two young children where one man behind the bar was serving and an elderly couple were eating. The man greeted me with "you don't want food do yer cos they are eating cos theyre friends" I said "ok that's fine" and ordered our drinks. The young children were extremely hungry so I went to the car for a sandwich and bag of crisps, as they were opened the man serving bellowed across the room:"woah you cant eat them in here, your going to have to just eat the crisps that you buy in here" His tone was a disgrace and I should of walked straight out but we obliged his request and bought the crisps and put the sandwiches away. After more of his grumpy grumblings we eventually left and he must of been over the moon. I have never been made to feel more unwelcome in a place in my life by a horrible human being. I plead with readers to stay away from this place if you do not want to go threw the same.

Just moved to the area, thought we'd try a local pub. Took my parents and had a lovely Sunday dinner and a good pint. Great little out with friendly staff. My dog was very happy in there as well. Dinner was huge and really nice, we all agreed. Exactly what we wanted, good honest Yorkshire pub, complete with friendly locals. Reasonablly priced too. We'll be back.

Three very well kept real ales. A lovely traditional locals pub with a very welcoming landlord, landlady and regulars. You are, unfortunately, a dying breed! When we rang to see if a booking was necessary we were warned by the landlady that food might be a little time in coming as it was Sunday evening and she would be in the kitchen on her own. Not a problem for us as we were in no rush to go anywhere. In the end, that wait of may be as much as 25 minutes was so worth it.Excellent, well cooked, traditional pub meals. The best sausage, egg, chips and beans that I've had in a pub, outstanding! And great value for money. Good parking and disabled access

We ate here a couple of times over Easter Once on Thursday (Pie Night) and again for Sunday lunch. Both meals were excellent. The beer is good and the landlord family and staff were helpful an friendly. When I'm next in the area its where I will eat. Be aware that they don't do food on Mondays.

While staying at the nearby Habton House Farm B&B we decided to drop in on The Golden Lion Inn on a Saturday night. Rather than being faced with an explosion in a Farrow and Ball paint factory that is the usual approach of most modern country pubs, we found The Golden Lion to be a good, honest and very down to earth pub. We were greeted by the hugely welcoming bar staff and were soon settled in waiting for the two very reasonably priced steaks that we ordered. What arrived was nothing less than stupendous. The chips were proper homemade chips. The onion rings, so often greasy and soggy, were beautifully crisp and very tasty. The steaks were well cooked and the salad a nice touch. And the portions were HUGE! By the time we had finished we were both completely full and very VERY happy with the choice of pub we had made. If you want a taste of the true Yorkshire, in both senses of the word, The Golden Lion is a must visit. Local competition beware; a nice paint job can't compete with this place.

absolutely divine! Home cooked food at it's best! The chef certainly ensures everything is spot on before food is sent out. I have not had a bad meal, or drink yet! Everything is reasonably priced and two of you can get drinks and a good portioned meal for way under £30! Speaking of portions, they are very decent, I usually have gammon (it is always very lean) comes with heaps of potatoes/chips and veg/peas. My boyfriend usually has curry, which comes with loads of curry, ample chips or rice or half and half as well as the option for a naan! I still have to try a Sunday Lunch here, everyone recommends it and I can't wait to try it, it sounds lovely and always smells lovely if we ever call in for a drink on a Sunday! Would definitely recommend!

We recently went for a meal here after reading the reviews but I have to say the experience was disappointing to say the least. Firstly we're not locals and therefore felt distinctly unwelcome, the stares as we walked in were very off putting. We then stood in a crowded, dingy looking bar and ordered a drink. We wanted to order food and so enquiries about a table. We were given menus and then ordered our food at the bar and then made our way to the restaurant area...big mistake. We were told off for finding our own table and told to go back to the bar where we had to wait until our food was ready before taking a seat, most odd. The land lord (I presume) was very curt and unwelcoming and had we not paid already I would have walked out at this point. Eventually we sat down to dinner, I had steak which was poor, it was incredibly thin and not cooked well. The onion rings were good but that was about it. My kids wanted a desert but there was nobody to take an order, I'm assuming you had to leave your table and go back to the bar once again to order, we talked then out of it and just left. Needless to say we won't be going back. Service is everything and the service in this pub is poor.

We visited this pub yesterday when on a Sunday day out. I must say that the lunch was amazing probably the best Sunday lunch we have had when eating out. The portions were huge and great value. Also the quality of the meat was great, we both had the roast beef which was cooked perfectly and had no grain at all.My wife loves mash potato on a Sunday lunch, it was a pleasant surprise to find we were served mash and lovely roast potatoes too. The lunch also came with five different veg.The service was so good and the landlord was so friendly checking regularly that all was good with the meal. We will definitely be visiting again.

Although we've been to the Golden Lion for Sunday lunch a good few times, we hadn't been to the pie night......until yesterday! We both had lovely home-made steak and onion pie with (home made) chips and peas, and a jug of gravy. It was lush! The steak in the pie was tender and tasty; it was good quality. Enjoyed it very much (too full for pudding again - I've only ever been able to manage a pudding here twice, and that was really lovely too!). Will be back! : )

Well another caravanning season is starting which means spending more time in the beautiful little country pub where you are greeted with a smile and a great hello x we have been coming up to the golden lion for many years now and it's my favourite place to eat and drink you are made to feel like a local and what the earlier commented stated. I will be spending many a weekend here eating fabulous home cooked food and luscious puddings swilled down by a gorgeous pint and enjoying the banter and laughs from local friends and new friends. Keep up the great work guys really looking forward to being back.

We decided to visit this pub as my partner drove past it when he was working and he saw the 'Sunday lunch' sign outside. We've recently moved to the area and we thought that we'd try it, and we're very glad that we did! We were made very welcome as soon as we walked through the door (am baffled by a previous review who said that they weren't made welcome...perhaps they went to a different pub?) by genuinely nice people. Firstly, we ordered drinks, and they had some lovely ales (guest beer by Wold Top breweries). We both had a Sunday lunch, which was lovely - proper home cooked food! The main dining area has a flagstone floor and is light and spotlessly clean. The Yorkshire puddings are home made, and we discovered that all the meat is local after talking to the lovely lady who does all of the cooking (who made the effort to come over and talk to us). There's plenty of fresh veg (perfectly cooked - not soggy or too hard). The portions are excellent and unfortunately we were too full for a pudding - you won't leave here hungry, which is the way that it should be! This pub deserves to do well - we'll certainly return, maybe we'll try the Thursday pie night (yes they are all home made)! Very happy to have found this place, thank you. : )

After recommendation from a friend we decided to pop to The Golden Lion for Sunday lunch. I must admit that after reading one of the reviews I was a little wary. I can however say that I am very pleased we did decide to go. For a family with two young children wanting a traditional Sunday lunch it was ideal, the food was good, tasty & plenty of it & it was excellent value for money. As for the staff we found them all extremely friendly & obliging at all times. Definitely worth a visit.

Now I can cope with mediocre food if it comes with service with a smile and I can cope with grumpy service if the food is Michelin standard. Unfortunately The Golden Lion had the worst of both worlds. I've never been made to feel more unwelcome in a restaurant. It was as if they were doing us a favour by serving us. It's one of those village pubs where they don't seem to welcome "outsiders". Don't go unless you enjoy being made to feel as if they don't want you there.
