Takeaway Fish been good lately have fish nearly every week from here sometimes overcooked but lately good,had curry sauce last week normally good but it was awful, vile so won't have know more normally has been good so why not keep it that way, such a waste of money, just get it right no excuses !!!

a lad called Tobie served me the other day he come across very disrespectful and rude also served me and my 14 year old son raw food like a frozen chip, a raw battered sausage it was pink on the inside, he didn't use any sort of manners and didn't give me the correct order and completely over charged the meal. It come up to £45 and didn't give me a refund when asked. very poor place wouldn't recommend at all. if i could give a 0 stars, i would.

Been using this place for ages and has always been very good. Last few weeks though the chips were terrible. Not just terrible but inedible. Shall not return.

Really enjoyable meal today 20/7/24 Had large Skate and I chose salad. Husband had large Cod and chips. All condiments offered too. Every bit was beautiful. Excellent service by three young girls who were rushed off their feet due to two other staff sick. They were a Credit to themselves. Always pleasant. Nothing too much trouble. Very impressed by them. So nice to come across hard working happy girls. Restaurant modern, bright, good air conditioning and very clean. Tea in nice pot and Good tea too, not weak or wishy-washy stuff. All in all I would thoroughly recommend the Golden Fillet restaurant and will happily go back.

We both had cod and chips and asked for the fish to be extra well done. The fish was very good when it arrived but the chips were appalling and I would say the worst I have ever had in a fish restaurant. They were just strips of soggy un-cooked potato and were total un-edible. I also asked for 2 bread rolls and got 2 burger baps which do not go with fish and chips so they were also not eaten and sent back but not taken off the bill. The girl blamed new potatoes for the reason which was absolute rubbish, they just had not been cooked properly.

My partner had saveloy I had cod and chips was excellent!! The Homemade Tartare Sauce was amazing would recommend highly 😋 👌

Our family took us here first a meal whilst we were visiting clacton. It was a very good meal, very quickly served, very hot and tasty. It was a nice little restaurant, lots of space, you can get a takeaway from here too. It was very clean and I would recommend it for a good meal. They had plenty to choose from their menu too.

We've been using this place for over 11 years and rarely had a complaint about the food. Even when we had to queue for ages in the days when the queue was out the door. You always knew the food would be good and fresh as it was cooked to order. Even when they reopened following covid lockdown, it was good. However, we have become very disappointed in recent months. Often, the fish can be dry, and the batter is either greasy or soggy on the inside, while the chips are often dry and full of small bits of chip. Other weeks, it's okay, but never as good as it was under the previous owners. We have complained and sometimes been reimbursed, but by that time, the meal is already spoilt. Unfortunately, we will now have to go elsewhere for our fish and chips. ☹️

We have used the Golden fillet a few times. The fish is always a good size and well cooked while the chips are fresh with generous portions. The only downside is that the fish is always quite greasy, not drained properly.

Been here for lunch a few times when visiting family in Clacton. It’s a nice clean restaurant with quite an extensive menu of different fishes. The food tasted very nice and portions were good. Would definitely return

Have come here for years when in Clacton, Today the fish was skimpy the batter was soft doughy and horrid, loved this place but will never use again, had 1 spoon for a tea and a coffee, plus felt more like a pest than a customer.

We came down quite late in the evening to grab some dinner after a long day, and while we couldn't dine in, our server Owen was great and got us our dinner really quickly! Lovely chap. He suggested to sit outside on the benches while the sun went down. Was actually really nice! The food was wonderful, the fish was tasty and flaky, the chips were crispy and fluffy despite being the end of the night, and the batter on the fish was excellent and so crispy! Thank you to The Golden Fillet for a wonderful birthday dinner :)

Poor service when we arrived; even though I had booked we had to wait. Thick, over cooked batter on a very small middle skate. Chips looked and tasted as if they were left over from lunchtime. Very expensive for what it was, especially drinks. Wouldn't recommend. It used to be really good!

Fish and chips were delicious, the best I’ve ever had. The menu is exactly what we all wanted and the friendly, helpful staff.made sure we felt at home. All the family enjoyed their meal and we enjoyed the celebration lunch. We were comfortable and the cafe was spotlessly clean and fresh.

Went here on Tuesday to have two mini cod and chips to be told they have a Tuesday special deal of 2 medium cod and 2 medium chips for £12.99. what great customer service! Tasted lovely too will be back next week thank you

The Golden Fillet really has gone downhill since it has been taken over. The portions used to be of a good size and both fish and chips cooked to perfection, sad to say this is no longer the case whether eating in the restaurant or takeaway, We ate in the restaurant on Thursday this week and the fish was greasy and chips only warm. The takeaways we have had have depended on who is cooking, most have been poor and very occasionally good. It has got to the stage now where we will be looking elsewhere for our fish and chips. Obviously we are not the only ones finding this, where have the long queues gone waiting to be served? Not at the Golden Fillet anymore.

Ordered and paid for fish and chips for a set time, went to pick them up it was chaos in there people and orders everywhere. All seemed very chaotic orders coming out really slowly. Left in the end got tired of waiting

This Fish and Chip shop used to be really good with good customer service and big portions of food but over the last couple of months both have gone down hill. Portions of food are dramatically smaller. Last visit was last week and the order took over 50 minutes to be partially processed. The staff just said they were sorry but didn't seem to really care. The fish was eventually cooked and was wrapped then they noticed that the cheesy chips had not even been cooked. No compensation was offered so asked for a refund for the cheesy chips which was processed. Will go to Skinners Fish and Chip shop next time even though this shop is further away from us.

Perfect cooked fish and crisp chips with light fluffy centres all with superb service and a great friendly atmosphere on a cold windy day what more could you want. A truly great version of the British traditional food. All necessary Covid safe precautions taken.

Definitely worth a visit. The large cod is huge and really well cooked, tastes amazing every time. Nothing is ever too much trouble, very helpful and welcoming staff. Pre ordering in peak times is a must!

I go in to The Golden Fillet at least once a month. Their food is phenomenal. A family run business, this place always provides friendly service and exceptional food. Even when busy, staff will try to make eye contact and conversation with everyone. Now things are slightly different, they have adapted to still provide phenomenal service and food to all their customers. You can "walk in " or phone to order. All orders are placed and collected through a window. The fish is outstanding and chips always fresh.They keep everyone up to date on their Facebook page, of changes, possible delays, changes to deliveries (you NEED to be well organised and quick to get delivery as they are SO POPULAR and trying to service their customers who are shielding)My son loves their sausages too. Their grilled fish is perfect for those who don't want battered and is blimmen gorgeous. Gluten free evening s are provided on a regular basis.Queues on most nights but especially week ends tell you all you need to know about this place. They don't only rely on tourism but the locals LOVE them.

Delicious fish and chips. The large cod was huge and the fish was lovely and fresh. The chips were also perfectly cooked. We order from here regularly and will definitely be going back during lockdown for our treat night!

Where do I start, large cod and chips x3 and medium cod and chips, cod was huge and tasty and the batter was perfect, chips again were perfect, and curry sauce was the best the wife's had in the area, plus a free can of drink while I waited, will definitely be using again

We’ve had chips from here before and they were lovely but on this occasion, the fish was dry with soggy skin and the chips tasted old and were hard. The saveloy was the only nice thing.

Just round the corner from my grandparents house and never fails to disappoint! Amazing fresh fish and delicious chips, plenty of mushy peas ! The resturant is decorated nicely and the service is great! I look forward to it every time I visit the gramps!

This chippie did not win Best fish & chip shop in the clacton area for nothing , the locals have been enjoying it for years .Its a lot more than your average chip shop ,it has a restaurant attached and you can order wine with your meal .If you manage to get through your starter and main course they have a range of deserts to tempt your taste buds and a home made desert of the day

We have been using The Golden Fillet for years and it is always very busy, so a good idea to phone your order through.This time, myself and my daughter had a cod, large battered sausage, medium chips and a curry pancake roll.The chips, sausage and pancake roll were lovely - I was particularly pleased that the pancake roll didn't have peas in it. LOLThe cod, however, had soggy batter on the bottom - so soggy that it was stuck to the paper.This is not the first time we have had this. :(If they could get their batter crispy all the way round, my score would be 5. :)

Restaurant highly recommended to us, and it didn’t disappoint. Best takeaway we’ve had in a long while. Made mistake of ordering large portion of chips as there were two of us. Huge portion but luckily our dogs helped us finish them.

Being gluten free it’s always nice to have a grilled fish option which was cooked to perfection with home made Tartar sauce !! They do a gluten free day first Monday one the month which I’ll have to bare in mind!! Restaurant very clean and welcoming and staff were lovely and accommodating to my 8 year old and my friends 3 year old would highly recommend to any one!!!

We visited here on Saturday 19th October 2019 to celebrate my husband’s birthday, we were a party of 12. The service was fantastic and the food was absolutely delicious. I had pre ordered the food as we were a large party and this ensured that our meals were served shortly after we arrived.The staff went above and beyond to make sure that everything run smoothly. They decorated the table with the items I had supplied, so that I didn’t have to worry about getting the tables set up. A great time was had by all members of our party.I regularly use this restaurant and family and friends always ask if we can go to The Golden Fillet when they are visiting us. We have never been disappointed with the quality of the food, and the staff are always very friendly and helpful.A big thank you to all the staff for making my husbands birthday a special event.

The Golden Fillet never fails to impress. The fish and chips are always lovely and the portion sizes are certainly not skimpy.

My family telephone our order through every Friday, we have never had any problems in doing so. No complaints from any of us, see you friday at 4:30! Ps- I can recommend the chicken burgers to!

After driving 100 from North norfolk, to see friends in near by clacton, call in to get fish and chips, I must say it was very good, fresh fish crispy batter and perfect chips(few to many) look forward to my next trip. Not sure when but hopefully not to long

Have visited the Golden Fillet numerous times and the food is always excellent. Even though always extremely busy the service is excellent and the quality of the food is first class. The fish in particular is outstanding quality.

The Golden Fillet is absolutely the best fish and chip shop I’ve ever been to. They’re the most diverse shop being capable of grilling fish, skinning fish and frying fish. As well as all these options they also provide for those who don’t eat fish such as a vegi burger and halloumi pieces. The service from the staff is astounding and have a real personal touch whether eating in or taking away, it has a beautiful restaurant that is fit with air con, heating and disabled access. The workers have a real sense of team work and always work together to provide the best service and quality, whenever I come in I have such lovely chats with the staff and when I’ve come into the restaurant recently they’ve been able to provide specials such as fish pie which I heard was cooked by the owner himself!! Even when the queue is heading out the door (as it regularly does) they always provide the best quality food, some of the reviews here don’t seem to understand the pressure that some of the lovely workers are under! I’ve come in many times when they’re serving up fish and chip orders for over 100 people whilst still providing a brilliant service to the in shop customers. All bad reviews seem to come when the old frier (I think Gary?) was in place but I’ve never heard of any wrong from Joe! I will never get fish and chips from any other place to avoid disappointment. I have got take away from the Golden Fillet a countless amount of times and the food is consistently lovely! I have recently eaten in the restaurant for a change and the service is brilliant, the staff couldn’t be more helpful, even in the busy spells. The quality of the food is unbeatable (take away and in restaurant) and the amount of food you get for your money is even better too!

Have been here many times. The staff are always excellent, but on this visit, the fish was either overcooked or reheated. It was a real disappointment, as we have always rated the product quality and recommended it to many people. Hopefully this was a one off, as we will try it once more.

We stopped here for lunch yesterday on a bike ride. Handy bike rack outside was a bonus. We ate outside as they were just closing. Wow what amazing fish & chips! We normally go to another local one opposite Valley Farm but this is now our firm favourite when staying in the caravan park.

Your staying by the coast and just have to have fish and chips. Chose this from the review but also hadn’t local recommendations. Wasn’t disappointed. On the main road with on street parking and possibly room for 3 cars on the frontage. Nice seating areas inside. Service was quick and very friendly. Food arrived without a long wait, piping hot and a good portion. Fish was delicious and tasted and fresh. Chips weren’t anaemia but couldn’t have benefited from slightly more browning. I had a mini cod and chips, which for me was plenty and I have a good appetite £5-95 and my husband a cod and chips £7,95 total, w3 asked for tap water to drink and it was nice that it cam chilled. Total £13.90. I would go back here, very good.

Have been here many times, and quality has never changed. Ambiance is basic, but the polite service and quality of the food is very good.

After preordering for 35 people on Easter Sunday with no deposits needed, we can’t thank the golden fillet staff enough!

Our cod and chips were perfectly fried and presented, the surroundings plain but spotlessly clean. Service was excellent with cheerful pleasent staff. An experience not to be missed.

Just had one of the best fish & chips ive had in years, my wife & I had a piece of cod & cod roe each & my sons had batted sausage & chips, had to wait whilst the food was cooked, but it was well worth waiting for, looking forward to my next visit.

We had a day trip to Clacton-on-Sea over the sunny Easter break, after a beautiful day by the sea it’s tradition to have Fish and Chips for dinner.. so we looked online for good places to go. That’s how we found The Golden Fillet, and we are so glad we did!!

Came to visit some old family friends with my husband daughter and granddaughter so all age groups covered. They visit the restaurant regularly so was already highly recommended by them. They were not wrong they were extremely busy and although we did not wait long apologised for slight delay well it was well worth waiting for had a huge piece of grilled skate cooked to perfection and such a reasonable price wish I lived nearer would go back regularly best fish and chips ever.

Good Friday 6.00pm. Very busy with double queue. Restaurant full. Jackie and her young friend working their socks off keeping everyone happy. Great food, excellent service.

Visited and half the food was missing ..phoned to tell them .staff so rude ! Food we tried .worse plaice I’ve tasted ..won’t be going back ..did get a refund .bad no need for rudeness .if they respond to this saying they wasn’t ..then they are lying as well

Our party of mixed ages ranging from fifty years old to ninety two years young enjoyed the hospitality provided in the restaurant; the restaurant is on one level, ultra clean with plenty of space between tables, the toilet is modern and step-free; our waitress was very helpful and pleasant, three of us had Cod and Chips, the small cod was ample, there was a small delay whilst our order was cooked fresh, the food was delicious and piping hot; one of our party had a pineapple fritter for their 'afters', we finished with hot drinks; the menu is varied with several choices of fish plus sausages, pies, chicken, etc, cheesecakes and puddings for dessert; well done to the staff and owners, they made a simple occasion into a special one.

The Sunday before last, I dusted off my Carrera Subway 1 bicycle and made a break for freedom. Between 26 and 28, I worked as a cycle courier in London, possessing seemingly boundless energy and resolve, so I foresaw no issues as I slung on my Decathlon backpack and made for Thorpe-le-soken.

Busy days you should reserve a table, Mum and I go ad hock mid week so not such a problem. Always had a warm welcome and found a table. If you are a gluten free person they do a fry on certain days that will include you also. Great service, great food, so clean I would almost eat of the floor and great price to boot - recommed it highly

This family run chippy is so good you will generally have to wait at peak times but it’s totally worth it! Great food and more than decent portion sizes (below is a medium!!) served by very efficient staff.

9 of us had reserved a table, and I couldn’t be happier with the level of service, it was efficient and unobtrusive, the food was freshly cooked and extremely good value. Glad to see Paul is still the owner.

We ordered 160 portions of their mini fish and chips for delivery to the local Leisure Centre on the occasion of our annual Barn Dance. This is the seventh year that we have placed a similar order, as it always arrives piping hot and on time with no complaints from anyone in all that time. This looked the best fish and chip shop in Clacton. Staff friendly and welcoming and knowledgeable. However garlic cod seriously Peter Kay would say. That wasn't for me ever.

We went here today 2 adults & 4 children wow how surprised we were, friendly, accommodating and the food was outstanding.... All of my 4 children ate everything and the portions were really big even for the kids, the food was fresh & hot and a great helping. The staff were amazing and we paid less than £40 for all food and drinks, well worth a visit... I will certainly be going back here. Highly recommended xxxxxxx

Visited here again, and had a great lunch. The medium cod was large, well cooked with a pleasant light batter. Chips were crispy and not too oily. The waitress service was attentive, even though she was very busy. Will definitely go again.

Can highly recommend this as a fish and chip restaurant. We have eaten in the restaurant quite a few times now and cannot praise it enough. We always pig out and go large, the fish is exceptional and the staff very helpful and friendly.

Another fantastic meal today - I can strongly recommend the Medium grilled cod which we usually have with a bowl of salad - all lovingly cooked by Joseph and served by Jackie.

I was visiting my parents,who live in Holland On Sea, and they visit this restaurant every Friday evening because it is exceptional. I was really impressed with the food, which I had the cod & chips and it was really good, the staff (especially Jackie, the waitress) re very friendly and welcoming and make you feel part of their family. The place was very clean and I am looking forward to going back there. Great service, very professional and gorgeous food. I can't wait to go back.

Went along today for the gluten free day and wasn’t disappointed. Being a coeliac can be very nerve racking going out to eat and trusting that the place you go to can cater for you. The manager knew all about cross contamination of gluten and explained this to me. Even the curry sauce they make is gluten free, which was yum!! Will definitely be going to the next gluten free day!

I’ve used the Golden Fillet since retiring to the area several years ago. More recently we moved to our new home some 5 or so miles away and despite the increased distance I still use this establishment. Why? Simply because it is, without doubt, the best fish and chip shop in the area. I highly recommend it, not only for the standard of food, but also for the service and friendly staff.

Been here a few times now.. in general the food is nice and the staff a friendly. However.. the owner (I think) doesn't have very good hygeine practices when it comes to serving the food... His hands awlays seem wet and he also touches your food with them.. my sausage and chips slipped off the carton and he just picked it up with his hands and put it back. Then he picked up the few chips with his hands that fell off as well and placed them back.. and finally asked for a roll and he just used his hands to pick that up as well.. been handling money.. touching wet fish etc.. a little bit of hygeine and hand washing goes a long way

My mum and Dad have been visiting regularly over the years for their treat of fish and chips and on special occasions the whole family go up to 26 of us. Unfortunately we lost our mum on Tuesday 18/9/2018 her birthday. On Wednesday we thought we would go and eat there together to honour her and called to see if they could accommodate us. They were quite busy and we said that’s ok we will take away. They called us back and said be here at 1pm we will get you all in. The food was fantastic as usual they even made us a steak pie to collect the following day to eat at home while all the family have been around. So again thank you so much see you all soon

Excellent welcoming restaurant. We arrived and ordered cod and chips three times. These were served promptly and very hot. Staff were helpful and nothing too much trouble. Highly recommended. Meal cost £29.45 with drinks
