Popped out having been to this pub when it was for sale and have to say the owners have done a lovely job, lots of local produce and home produced meats. There is a lovely feel to the pub and the owners are very welcoming. Look forward to coming back on a sunny day to enjoy the lovely garden.

Delightful country pub but very busy so recommend booking in advance. Food was fantastic with a perfectly cooked steak. Starters amazing, almost a meal on their own. Beer was first class and the staff incredibly friendly and efficient despite being busy. The beer garden was great too.

Stopped here after walking to the local village shop that had closed before I made it there. Could not of asked for a nicer place to stop, only had a pint of Coke but after the shop being closed was starving and asked very politely if the kitchen could do me anything despite the pub kitchen also being closed and the polite landlady saying she would see what she could do. Ten minutes later I was enjoying some rather tasty cheesy garlic bread! Defo recommend and the food and price looked a bargain!

Lovely experience, very welcoming and friendly staff. Staying nearby we looked for a traditional pub diner producing locally sourced food. The food is cooked to order so not at McDonald speed which is good, more time to enjoy a nice beer. Very chatty staff and pleasant local pub experience definitely would recommend.

Really lovely find! We were on a girls break away and had found this pub by chance. The owner was so welcoming and lovely, she chatted to us for ages. The food was absolutely beautiful I honestly can’t fault it at all. We had the gammon, the fish, and the vegetarian tart. The atmosphere and interior is stunning and the service was top notch. Honestly nothing bad to say and hope to return one day. Thank you!

Our 2nd visit to The Smithy. The beautifully converted former Smithy is decorated and furnished to a very high standard. A lot of thought has been put into ensuring you have everything you need in this self catering accommodation to make it seem like home from home. The accommodation adjoins The Globe Inn. A lovely country pub with character. The delicious pub meals are all freshly cooked using produce almost entirely sourced in Somerset. Hosts (Stuart and Mandy) are a lovely, friendly, helpful couple. Nothing is ever too much trouble. We will definitely be back.

WOW WOW AND WOW. Can’t recommend this pub/accommodation highly enough. Came all the way from Australia and it feels like home away from home. The publicans treated us with so much warmth and friendliness we felt like family. They went over and above to accommodate our every need. We stayed in their cottage for a few nights, which is immaculate. The bed is so comfortable, which allowed us to rise fresh and revitalise each morning. The food is very reasonably priced for such generous portions. The menu is extensive and caters for all dietary needs. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The food is like a good home cooked meal. (Very generous serves) The accomodation is amazing. I would give The Globe Inn 6 stars out of 5 and highly recommend you take the time to visit. I can guarantee you will be back. We went to the Globe for a family celebration and were warmly welcomed by our hosts Mandy and Stuart. They did everything they could to ensure we had a wonderful time even making sure my picky son had something he liked. Whilst we were there a large party arrived for their meal but they were extremely late and extremely rude to Mandy screaming abuse at her in front of us all Mandy remained polite at all times and continued to offer them options for some of their party who were vegan but the abuse continued until Mandy politely asked them to leave Mandy immediately checked that all the other dinners were OK and apologised for something that in my opinion was not her fault We could not have had a nicer family celebration thank you

We were welcomed yet again by Stuart & Amanda and her staff, this time for a family evening meal. We were all most pleased with both the quality of the meals and the friendly service. This is a great pub which was lovingly restored by Stuart and Amanda during the covid years. The original features were conserved, including the flagstone floors and quirky nooks and crannies. My family were intrigued by the photo of a previous landdlady (Mrs Enticott?) who lived at the pub from the age of 1 and eventually held the post of landlady for 57 years. The Globe has accommodation across the drive and many tables and chairs just over in the orchard, for these lazy months of summer.

We arrived for a 5 night stay in The Smithy on 31/05/23 for a birthday getaway. We received a very warm welcome from Mandy and Stuart, owners of the pub. The cottage that Mandy showed us around was fabulous in every way, very tastefully converted, ideal for a couple. We were pleasantly surprised to find that we had been supplied fresh bread and milk, jams butter and water which after our journey was very much appreciated. We had a couple of amazing meals, all local fresh produce which was prepared by Stuart (great culinary skills). If you want a good atmosphere, good company and great food then visit this pub. I promise you will not be disappointed! We would like to thank Mandy and Stuart for being great hosts and making this birthday a memorable one. We are definitely going back, rebooking for later this year and for a repeat birthday celebration next year!

Really sorry to have to say that our recent visit to The Globe Inn was not at all comfortable... Admittedly, our family party of eight were a little late, but we had booked for an early session in the hope that our numbers wouldn't be a problem and we were still there before 6.30pm. We were made aware immediately that we had caused a problem, by arriving later than booked, and for wanting to sit outside instead of inside. Having decided to make the best of our rather lukewarm reception, we set about ordering immediately so that we could try to make up for some of the lost time, and not cause the kitchen any further headaches. After looking at the menu, which said we should ask about the Inn’s vegan and gluten free options, two of our party with these particular dietary requirements went inside to make the enquiry. They were told that the Inn ‘does not appreciate vegans’, at which point we really felt that we needed to leave… This is the first negative review that I have posted on TripAdvisor, and I do so now reluctantly, especially as we had been recommended this Inn by family who live locally. However, I’m afraid that our family party were not made to feel at all welcome, and those of us with particular dietary requirements even less so. We were able to return to our very local holiday accommodation and cook ourselves something instead, but we were nevertheless taken aback that the start to our looked forward to family evening out together turned out to be such an unexpected challenge…

We had a great meal out on Friday 14th April with our daughter and son-in-law at this historic Somerset pub. It is to be found in the village of Appley, near Ashbrittle. Visitors to Somerset would be well advised to use the postcode on their satnav. We were well looked after by Stuart & Amanda and their lovely staff. Each of us had a different dish, all excellently prepared and cooked by Stuart and his kitchen staff. The pub was lovingly restored a few years ago, with the emphasis on conservation to retain most of the pub's original features. There is a well-stocked bar and i enjoyed sampling Sam's Cider, which was most light and refreshing - and a new one to me. Amanda informed us that accommodation is available, if booked in advance.

Revisited the Globe at Appley (not to be confused with two others withing 15 miles) with friends, for the first time since well before COVID. The four of us had lunch, two each having the sea bass and two their mini "chicken and mushroom wellington" - pastry wrapped in an individual oven dish. Accompanied by fresh veg, these were all excellent! The pub now has a bar serving real ale plus three other rooms, with character ceilings (mind your head). For a small village pub, the menu was varied and well priced and gets changed regularly. I'd recommend it to anyone passing through Somerset into Devon on the M5 or A38 - or anyone like us who live close to the Somerset/Devon border. Really friendly owners - we will visit again soon! SATNAV gets you there - just a few picturesque miles off the A38 and then turn right just after the Appley Pavilion (village hall and cricket ground).

Years back, The Globe had a splendid reputation and guests came from miles around to visit this treasured gem in Appley. Then, as often happens, things changed and the pub was closed. Recently, The Globe has re-opened, having been tastefully restored by local craftsmen. The owner and his staff are friendly, welcoming and professional, with a wonderful buzz about the whole place. Local beers etc are on offer and an excellent chef and team have been appointed. The chef specialises in local produce and has a penchant for game - often with an Italian twist, it would seem. Our debut meal there last evening was an absolute joy. Table decor is smart with a country flare (local wild flowers etc), service unassuming but excellent and food outstanding. We both fell for the fillet steak, with creamed potatoes, wilted spinach and an outstanding bone marrow jus - it was perfect! Interesting starters and desserts are on offer too. Long may it last!

The Globe has just reopened under new management so I came by with my partner to check it out on the opening night.Although the new lordlord is still renovating some of the side rooms, the main areas (including huge beer garden) are open and we were both really impressed overall. I chatted to a few of the locals who are glad to see the place reopen.Firstly, the food was clearly fresh and cooked to order. It was fancy without being pretentious so it made the occasion feel special. The menu was made up of fresh twists on classic British and particularly countryside foods. The food is well priced too, the meals aren't cheap pub grub but are priced almost cheap for the high standard of dining. The drinks are good, with some lovely Orchard Pig cider on tap. Could do with a bigger range of ales and spirits, but I know that is coming with the further renovations and as demand gets evaluated. Finally, the service was great. All the staff were attentive and polite. They checked you were well looked after, but without pestering you too much - which is how I like things. The Globe is one of the best restaurant pubs I've been to and I look forward to seeing it go from strength to strength. Love this place. Food really excellent and we really enjoy eating here. The menu is eclectic and varied. The food is unpretentious, well prepared and reasonably priced. The seafood is outstanding, and virtually unobtainable in any other pub in Somerset. The customers and staff are quirky, welcoming, interesting and cerebral. I understand and appreciate what a decent country pub is like. Emphasis on 'country' here, so yes, it might smell of wood fire and dogs on a casinos. If your delicate constitution couldn't possibly stand this, then you might want to relocate to one of the 'Wimpy home' style pubs currently proliferating within the local area. You can drink your pint of fizzy larger and masticate on a plastic burger, whilst staring at a large screen TV that blares out some appalling football match, standing next to people wearing baseball caps and electronic tags around their ankles. One of the many things I like here is that there is no 'canned music', meaning that you can discuss, converse, argue and generally put the world to rights without having to be beaten down by the tyranny of the latest 'Now 243' CD. There are several small and discreet rooms which gives the impression of being more like a private members club rather than the country boozer it undeniably is. Improvements? Ditch the Badger ham, it gave my wife TB. If Fox cutlets served on a bed of foxgloves with a reduction of squirrel tears is not on the menu for my next visit I'm off to the nearest McDonalds.

Popped in for a pint and some grub last Saturday. arrived around 7pm, its wasn't busy the kitchen clearly couldn't cope. The spelling mistakes on the menu should have alerted me to the fact that it wasn't going to be great. It wasn't. Had a nice pint of Butcombe beer by the tiny bar, then made our way into the dining area to sit. It's very cramped with a piano right in the way. There are 2 large tables in the piano room (I guess seating around 6) when people are seated, access is difficult due to the randomly placed piano. there is an adjacent room with a few more tables but I didn't venture in. There's a good choice of food catering for all tastes. I opted for a burger, as did my pal. Other members of the group ordered a steak, some prawns and a spag bol. Food was delivered in good time. Missing starters of bread and olives (the bread, was just dry bread with a small pot of butter, not Italian style bread as i would expect with olives but in fairness, it was just advertised as bread) 2 dry burgers, missing onion rings, prawns with missing finger bowl , a steak that appeared to have everything and a spag bol. We asked for extra sauces, they came but missing some of the items we asked for. The young girl serving (blonde hair) was rushed off her feet and not coping well, the whole place comes across as being very disorganised. The extra sauces never came, neither did one portion of missing onion rings. I gazed into the kitchen en-route to the gents, again, very busy with the small mount of staff they had and to the onlooker, more disorganisation. We were just finishing our meal and we heard another customer telling the landlord that she had reserved the table we were sat at - the reserved signs however. A strange place, almost like the Faulty Towers of the pub world. Would i visit again, well I'd probably have to as my chums live nearby but it wouldn't be through choice. Have been here many times and will always suggest meeting here if a group of our friends want to meet for a nice pub lunch. Haven't been for a while and must have changed hands. New menu written on chalk board....prices had really gone up too. My husband had a chicken curry which was dry and unpleasant. I had a ham sandwich-the ham was delicious but cheap thick margarine....no chutney or nice side salad so all in all had to force it down after a few bites.Kids sausage and mash was foul-lumpy gravy which i would not serve...sausages tasted past there best. All in all grim and we felt robbed at £50.New owners dogs running wild in the garden among the now highly dilapidated children's play equipment. One dog did his business right next to where we were sitting, completely unacceptable and disgusting. The inside is grotty, carpet covered in dog hair. Such a shame as it is in a lovely spot and we have many happy memories of afternoons there. Wont be returning any time soon.

I'm sorry to write bad reviews but our food experience here was beyond terrible. We'd been travelling all day and just wanted something to fill our stomachs as was all starving. We ordered bread and asked for balsamic vinegar. We were brought out bread already soaked in vinegar, which is a first for us. It was soggy and definitely not balsamic it was soaked in, this was the first no no. Then onto the mains, we all ordered fish and chips, my fish was burnt and the chips well, they were inedible. They looked like they'd been fried for days and was literally just skin left. All three dinners had these thrown on. I really can't comprehend how bad this meal was. Plus paying £12 per meal and £8 for a child's meal that were this bad did leave me a bitter taste in my mouth. The only shimmer of hope was I'm guessing the landlord ,sat in the bar, he was kind and gave our daughter a chocolate bar.

This place has certainly gone downhill since we last ate here- before the current management. We both had upset stomachs during the night and the runs the next day after a meal here on Thursday evening. My steak was tasty but half of it was fat; half a tomato and one sliced mushroom and overcooked frozen peas.My husband had sausage and mash of which I have seen better served in a school canteen. The desserts were equally strange-I had strawberries and cream which consisted of a mountain of squirty cream with 2 sliced strawberries stuck all over the outside of it.My husbands crumble was also poor and at £6 a go we thought overpriced. All together not good value for money.Don't visit this place if you don't like dogs and please sort out the dead thing up the chimney! Very doggy smell even with all the doors open.Come on - you are letting things slide.Don't do the same thing you did at the Culmstock Inn.

The Globe was recommended to me for its food and when I went with friends I was thoroughly disappointed. The soup was cold and bland, the risotto overcooked bland and cold, the fish in the fish and chips was clearly fried from fozen and there were too many flowers on the meal to disguise the shortfalls. When ot came to the pudding the sticky toffee pudding was good but the creme brulee a diaster. A sticky curdled mess with soggy burned suger top was quite an insult. I don't know whether the pub had temporary staff on that day but it was not what I expected. Quirky and friendly service though and it was nice to be able to sit in the garden.

How good country pubs used to be and we still wish they still were, a jumble of rooms, fire places and bar staff who aren't afraid to express their views. The menu is extensive and varied, and always well cooked. A good selection of wine and beers. Lovely garden for summer afternoons.Justin mixes some great cocktails, rumour has it he'll organise a lift home if you indulge a bit more than planned. Give it a go you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Came here after walking the dog. Barman told me in no uncertain terms a dog wouldn't be welcome inside- I hadn't asked to bring him in, just mentioned I'd finished a long walk. I ordered a prawn in Marie rose sauce sandwich but could only have a baguette. When it arrived the sauce was so diluted it was barely pink & tasted of nothing at all. It dripped out of the baguette & was evidently very diluted. A great shame that something so simple should be so difficult to get right. On the plus side I asked for a glass of water (I'd ordered a pot of tea too)& it was provided with ice & fruit slices without complaint or cost. The barman under charged me. When I pointed out his mistake I didn't get so much as a thank you or a smile. Although the pub itself was comfortable and pleasant, such a disappointing basic baguette from a kitchen that purports to serve quality meals means I'd be reluctant to return.

Very dissapointing, I had not visited for a while and am sorry to say will not again. Firstly the overwhelming smell of dogs was rather off putting. As what I wanted from the menu was not available, I decided on fish with salad. The salad was unimaginative and I was hoping for a piece of fresh fried fish not a triangle that looked as if it had come from a packet. The prices are expensive compared to other local pub restaurants. I was also shocked to find that from reading these reviews that my fish was cooked in beef fat, I do not eat any meat apart from fish. However I have to say the staff who served us were friendly

This establishment catered brilliantly for a large group of 21 with ease. We had a wide range of food choice and the kitchen delivered with great consistency. I know for a fact the plaice gougons were made from scratch as we saw the fish prior to being made. Also a good beer on tap. We were made very welcome and I would recommend for somewhere to go for a beer/wine of a meal out.

We recently ate at this establishment and I have to mention the landlord. We all ate badger ham with squirrel foam (served appropriately pink). When we asked Mr Richard where he procured the aforementioned victuals, he replied "in the beer garden ". Well you can't get more local than that! Anyway to cut a long story short it was bluddy good.

I've never been made to feel such an inconvenience on a meal out before. The seating was awkwardly tight, the landlord was embarrassingly drunk and incredibly rude, the food was pretentiously priced, and what was served was less than appetising. This pub use to be the heart of the village, I'm really sad for the pub to give such negative feedback, but there was absolutely NOTHING positive about our evening out. Sorry The Globe- but get rid of Richard otherwise you'll end up in the same place as The Culm Valley did.

A group of us went to eat here for a friend's birthday. When we arrived we were not seen to or shown a menu, to then be asked if we were ready to order. The owner who was taking our order was drunk and couldn't write our order down. When our starters arrived they had missed off one (by the time is was ready everyone else had finished theirs). The mains came out in dribs and drabs (two meals forgotton), chips disgusting, hair in food and no veg.The service was appalling with rude comments from the landlord saying he thought we were going to be trouble when we arrived! All we wanted was a nice meal in a local pub of ours, instead we got hair infested food and lots of abuse from the drunk landlord! Will never ever be going back while that owner is at the pub and would advise all to stay clear.A very disappointing evening for a special birthday - a great shame!

The Globe is a wonderful pub - make no mistake about that. It is as pubs used to be - friendly, uncluttered by modern music or paraphernalia, cosy and warm. However, the landlord is, well, unusual. I arrived and he was sprawled across two thirds of the small bar on the customer's side leaving very little space for service. Why? I had fish and chips; not to be recommended. The fish "portion" was heavily encrusted in batter; more like a deep fried fish sandwich than as it should be. The chips were similar - masses of unwelcome fat filled crispy bits - lovely in small doses, but at this quantity was only just short of a cardiac arrest. The price, at £12.00 was horrific value.

My wife and I were on a weekend break and the Globe Inn was recommended to us as having 'excellent' food. When we arrived, we found the restaurant to be quirky and staffed by eccentric but, initially, friendly staff. We did notice a strong smell of dog but were prepared to put up with that if we were going to have a good dining experience. We ordered wine but they had a remarkably limited selection for a restaurant charging London prices, ie one or two choices! We sat down to have a drink and perused the extensive menu which was posted on a blackboard. On the face of it, a lot of the food sounded enticing. We both ordered mussels to start. These were OK although the liquor it was in was a tad salty. However, we had to ask for a finger bowl and then given a bar towel to dry our fingers rather than a napkin! Then it got worse. I ordered Hake in a carrot and vanilla veloute as it sounded different. My wife had red mullet. When they arrived, the presentation was very uninspiring .The veloute was lumpy and looked like the chef has simply passed the carrot roughly through a food processor and then added vanilla essence ( not the smooth bechamel-style, stock-based sauce you would expect ). My wife's red mullet came on a pile ( and I mean a pile ) of very ordinary tasting mash potato. None of the food was seasoned properly so tasted bland and uninteresting. We attempted to eat the food, as we were hungry, but had to give it up as a bad job. When the manager came to collect the plates, I told him the food was 'seriously underwhelming'. He offered to take one of the meals off the bill at that stage. We then simply sat there until it was clear that we would have to go to the bar to pay the bill. When we did, I told the manager that I would pay for the mussels and the wine. Not for the main meals. He would not except this and said we 'had obviously come here looking for trouble' (and that he was not going to let us leave the building). I am not a natural complainer so his comments couldn't be further from the truth. We then had an exchange of words which eventually involved in the manager snatching my debit card and refusing to let it go. Then another man, sitting at the bar, drinking, became involved. He challenged me to guess the fruit in some form of drink and said he would give us the meal for free if I guessed right. I learned that this man was the landlord! I said I was not going to play games and was happy for pay for the starter and wine but not for the main meals. But there was no attempt from the management to be placatory or even apologise for the poor standard of the food. I mentioned the under seasoning and was told: 'well you've got salt and pepper on the table'. We were at an impasse and the management eventually told us to pay £43 and that would be that although in hindsight I think it was more than what we should have been charged. All in all, a very unpleasant experience. If I was offering advice, I would say the restaurant should reduce the number of items on its menu, get a better chef and improve their customer service before they can justify the prices they are charging. Suffice to say, we won't be going back.

The atmosphere was really nice the whole evening was. Would recommend booking for an earlier table as it fills up quick in the evening (around 7:30), the food was lovely (try the pork belly it's amazing, literally it's half of a pig). You defiantly need to save space for pudding NO MATTER WHAT!The parking is difficult so you want to research places to park first!!Also when leaving to go to the toilets brace yourself for a blast of coldness as the restaurant is really warm and the back door tends to be open!
