How lovely to go to a pub that has got everything right. The staff were so welcoming and it had a such a cosy feel to the place. This place is perfect for a pint and great for food too. They seem to have done the impossible and are running a proper independent country pub. It’s so refreshing to go to somewhere where the food is brilliant and all freshly cooked and the service is fantastic. The chefs own sauce was amazing we wanted to steal the bottle! In the era of big faceless chains it’s so lovely to find proper pubs still exist. We can’t wait to go back.

I think I’m in love. It almost makes me want to divorce my husband that I left 10 years ago and get rid of the father of my child… THIS is exactly how pubs used to be… but with a massive twist: the food. The menu is small and if smoked meats is what you want, here is the place for you. I insist, really, you must go. It’s clean, welcoming and has a fire going next to the bar to heat the beautiful historic building. There’s a pool table and plenty of seating inside and out. The toilets are modern. The decor eclectic and inviting. Now, the most important bit: food. Heaven in my mouth. Smoked brisket, pulled pork, chicken, shrimp, bbq pork… none of this bought in rubbish. The chips are to die for and I don’t even like chips. The hot sauce flavourful and gives a big middle finger to ‘Frank’s’. Coleslaw… well, forget soggy commercial stuff - we all have one person in our life who makes great slaw (Aunty Jean), they can retire now. As you enter through the car park, you see a gargantuan smoke pit to your left. Here is where the magic happens…. Whilst we all sleep safely in our beds each night, the moon aligns with the stars and your meat slowly smokes away for you to enjoy the next day. Ready to pull you from whatever troubles you have in your life, ready to put a smile on your face. Forget ‘hug in a mug’, this is food to embrace your face. Delicious. Moist. Smokey. Melty. Flavourful. Support this type of business. You must. It’s not a chain. There’s no corporate here. It’s amazingly different and quite frankly, I’m in love.

You must try the Huffers. A sour dough type baked roll stuffed with either, beef brisket, shrimp po-boy, chicken parmigiana, and more besides. Excellent chips and quite possibly the best homemade BBQ sauce ever. The menu maybe small but it is absolutely worth stopping off for a great lunch, in this cozy little pub. Plus there's a lovely big open fire. Definately one to remember when passing though this part of Essex in future. Oh and the landlord and staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. We popped into the pub after a 5 mile walk around Shalford on a very cold day. A lovely warm fire and a cosy atmosphere greeted us and we immediately felt welcome.. we enjoyed well kept pints of Colchester Metropolis and Greenjack Nightingale. The highlight was the food though. Huffers with beef brisket and chips. Chicken Caesar wraps with Chips. I had what I had only read about in the books of James Lee Burke - a Shrimp Po’ Boy - it was excellent. And did I mention the chips?up there with the best we’ve ever had. A visit to this pub might actually make you move to Shalford.

We really wanted to enjoy this meal, being local and not tried the pub with the new owners. It is the worst meal I’ve ever eaten out!I have never sent food back but my main of chicken tikka masala was so obviously over cooked in the microwave it was chewy and burnt. My husband ordered the Donna kebab and he couldn’t even get a fork into some of the pieces they were so rubbery. Add to that, the 50 minute wait in a quiet pub with two small children, I am embarrassed that we paid the full bill. Will never go back and I suggest you don’t bother!

There was a friendly atmosphere from the waitress but when we arrived there was no menu to choose from and was served a very minimal roast dinner. I'm a local and appreciate how important it is to have a pub open in rural villages.our experiences last night wasn't very good we went out for a family meal but wished we had gone to McDonalds or KFC insteadwe waited 1 hr 45 mins for food to turn up, our 3 yrs was so tired he was falling asleep on my lap and once his food finally arrived he was to tired to eat it (that was a waste of money)I ordered rump steak Medium-rare but it came well over done, dry and tasteless the pulled pork burger was very dry pork in a bum, the chicken burger wasn't much better either.i have no idea what oil is used in the deep fat fryer but it isn't very nice, my partner and myself where up gone 3 am with stomachache from the chips and chicken burger, My daughter had ham, eggs, chips this looked like the best meal to have and she enjoyed it (wish i had had it)The Manager did offer another meal at %50 but i'm afraid i don't think we will be eating here again for a while sorry!

The George is our local, and closest pub. We missed it when it was closed until earlier this year, and welcomed it being open again. It was a bit hit & miss back in early 2020, with no chef one night, broken down oven the next, which put us off to be honest. Then COVID hit, and everything shut.In June or July it opened again, and we visited hoping for the best. We met the new owner, who apparently runs a large pub/restaurant in Clacton, and he was really nice and friendly. He was also a really good chef, and the food we had on two occasions was really good, with generous portions and reasonable prices. And the service was great.Unfortunately, it appears standards have dropped.....We visited this evening, and were greeted by a friendly bar man who was there last time.It transpired that the owner from Clacton had put a manager in the pub, and was not there tonight. We each ordered rump steak at approx. £15 each along with 2 x starters (which were the best part!)My wife asked for her steak medium rare and I requested mine to be medium. We were told that they had no chips, only fries, which was ok, but I would have preferred thick cut chips. We asked if the steaks came with a sauce, or if sauce could be purchased, but after the bar man popped off to the kitchen, he returned and said no.We had noticed that we could add stilton to a burger for £1.50, so we asked if we could have stilton on our steaks. The steaks arrived with minimal salad, and both steaks were over cooked, and well done. The steaks were chewy, and dry. When the young lady behind the bar (who we thought was a bar maid, but was actually the new manager parachuted in), came over to check if all was well, I mentioned that the steaks were not cooked as ordered, and over cooked. The female said she would mention it to the kitchen, and promptly disappeared, never to return. There was very little stilton sprinkled onto either steak. Certainly not £1.50 each worth, unless it was vintage cheese?!!We ate and chewed our way through the steaks, and finally finished. The bar man came to clear our table, and asked if everything was ok, and I again mentioned that our steaks were over cooked. He apologised, and disappeared. We also mentioned that the mayonnaise sachets were all out of date, and had expired on 17/08/2020, 4 days ago. I know its not massively out of date, but its not great.Nobody came back to our table to offer us a dessert menu, so we finished our drinks and went to the bar to pay.We asked the female manager for the bill, and she disappeared, and sent the bar man over in her place, just as he was tucking into his pint behind the bar.The bill came to approx. £61. I paid this, and after doing so (as I am not in the habit of complaining to get money off the bill), I again mentioned to the bar man that we were disappointed with this visit, compared to the previous ones. I again stated that our steaks were overcooked, and that we weren't offered dessert, or the bill at our table.I also queried the £3 charge on the bill marked MISC FOOD, which I was informed was the charge for the stilton on the steaks. I mentioned that it was expensive for the minimal amount of stilton we got, but no response was forthcoming. The bar man just looked at me, and said sorry, and appeared very awkward, and unsure what to say or do.The manager never came near.I said to the bar man that we were disappointed, and that this visit was not as good as previous visits, and hoped for better next time. The bar man just replied "OK, Sorry about that." It is a real shame that tonight was a let down. We like the George, and we try to support our local pub.I think that the staff in there currently do not have the same enthusiasm and customer care as the owner, and let the place down, when he is not around.I want the George to succeed, and remain open. I will return, but if the service and food continues to be poor, then I will not be quite so keen to attend.Maybe tonight was a one off, but next time I will order something more simple like scampi or gammon.Fingers crossed its better next time!

We parked at the George for Saturday lunch with friends. We had a great walk with the dogs. They were allowed in to the bar area where we ate. The food was excellent, the service was very good and it had a good choice of beers or wine. It's a lovely atmosphere in the bar. The open fire was very warming. It's really pleasing to see the pub open again and the new owners are putting in a lot of effort. If you like a proper old world pub it ticks the boxes.

Was it open mike night or karaoke for one person? Quite well attended for a January although is was difficult to work out whether most of the customers were putting a brick wall between them and the music or they'd had a meal and not moved. What was obvious was that most of the prime seating in the pub 'area' had been taken over for entertainment leaving the largely separate restaurant area. A questionable decision... just saying. The George used to pride itself on having a good range of beers and was well attended when that was the case. Now the limited selection 2 or 3 beers at best from 2 breweries likely reduces customer footfall as does not being clear when the pub is open or closed and the lack of a clear and welcoming road front presence to attract opportunity passers by, as it did so well in previous years.Fingers crossed that the pub is or soon becomes viable.

Hooray! The George Inn at Shalford has reopened. We went last night based recommendation (I didn't know it had reopened). Lovely welcoming Landlord and Landlady. It has a cosy country pub atmosphere. Excellent beers (Shalford Brewery), my wife didn't need ice in her Pinot as shock and suprise, their wine is cold enough not to need it. The menu is quite extensive. Our friends had fish and chips which they enjoyed and my wife and I had the sweet potato curry with chicken which was excellent. The George is an old pub and the heating in the restaurant area is limited. It's not cold but don't go in just a slinky little number, you might get a bit nippy.

It was good to see this pub, once again, packed out with villagers after the Christmas carol service in the village church. Good service, as usual, with a fantastic range of ales from local breweries. That, to me, is always a nice touch. Then, being winter, steaming mulled wine. A group of around twenty of us had then decided not to wait even though the family had pre-booked the wake at the pub including refreshments.....After years of not returning due to previous bad issues, this didn't install any confidence that the pub had turned the corner. The coffee should have been ready, extra staff employed and a warm welcome ready for us after a solemn affair....I live 50 miles away and would have welcomed a cuppa ! All the signs indicated that service was from 12 - 14, some web sites say from 10am whilst others say its open all day...........No notices to say they were opening late, no contact details if you needed to check, someone could have at least phoned the family to say they were delayed. You don't need to ask me if I'd recommend the pub as I was stuck outsdie, in any case......Yours totally disgruntled

Visited The George as we were visiting Shalford and thought we would try it as Now under New Management. I was Disappointed it was Cold in the Pub the only Heat was from an Open Fire which I must say was Nice but only for the half dozen Regulars that were in Front of it on the Bar side. All the other Radiators were cold. Our table was in the Area set aside for Meals I ate my Lunch with my Coat on .Roast Lamb was Cold and I sent it back for them to heat in Microwave . Sunday Lunchtime and only 5 People eating meals plus the Half Dozen Drinkers.I will not be returning .

Managed to book for Sunday lunch today, not that busy, just the one young lad behind the bar who although trying his best seemed to be the only person working. Eventually got a drink and we sat down at the table, disappointed that there was only beef or lamb for the roast both of which I don't eat so I went for the pork escalope and the others the roast. They also had starters, we waited quite some time before the starters were served. They were ok we then had another long wait before the roast meat and potatoes were served then shortly after my escalope, we then had another wait before a small dish of vegatables came up in fact we wondered if we were going to get any veg at all! My pork escalope was quite small and bit tough and the breadcrumbs were burnt in fact overall a quite disappointing meal onsidering it was on of the more expensive items on the menu. The roast was the better option. The young lad was doing his best and seemed to barman, waiter and general factotum, it was all a bit unprofessional apart from the young lad we weren't sure who was staff or customers. We are local and had great hopes when the pub was taken over again but although nice decor inside there is a lot of competition around and judging by our experience today they've got a long way to go to compete. We won't be rushing back any time soon. Such a shame as it's a lost opportunity.

Visited here today for Sunday lunch, first of all the telephone number given on this site and via the Internet is not recognised! Had to go through the parish council to get it! Secondly the length of waiting times for our starter and main meal was too long, 2hrs! My mother's meal was far the most expensive but was visibly burnt, but the landlady was quite happy to serve it!. The roast was ok. But the amount of veg served for three people was poor, the only good thing was the young man who mostly looked after us 10 out of 10. Will not be returning, which is a shame cause it seems like a lovely place but the food and the price for it definitely let it down.....

Recently taken over by new landlord and landlady. Still needs a little tender loving care after bad previous management but on its way to being the village pub. Nice ales on tap, friendly service. May try the food next time as it looked good. Also, I noticed, a good range of wines on offer.

Visited this pub 3 evenings in a row as staying in local b&b.; All three evenings we had a different meal and all three evenings it was really good. Staff were very friendly and although it seem to take a while for the food to come out, it was cooked freshly and tasted good. We were informed it had been taken over recently, so who ever is in charge they are doing a good job. Very pleasant evenings. Would recommend and definitely go back if in that area.

Came here with my husband for dinner on a Friday night. It's a lovely pub, really cosy and friendly people. Food was excellent value and lovely home cooked style. My fajitas would have been enough to feed 2! Mini bottles of Prosecco too which I loved. Would definitely come back here again. The menu choice is also excellent, lots of choice.

A good village pub grub establishment with real ales but be aware that they open at 6 but don't start serving food until 6:30 and then it's a wait whilst the chef gets going. We ordered the seafood tower but there was no crayfish or salmon so prawn cocktail was the only option. Tasty but no brown bread and butter with is the usual accompaniment and needed because the sauce was tasty. The slow roasted pork was hot and tasty but don't expect crackling. It's not cheap, but it is sufficiently good enough to warrant the cost. We would go again but we would make sure that we were not ravenous and set to be there for at least a couple of hours as we had a wait for it all to be sorted.

It's our local pub and a lovely authentic old setting. Went for a meal after a tough work week and not disappointed. Jenny recommended the fish and chips special and it was fantastic. Great fish, light crispy batter, mushy peas and home cooked chips. Delicious and so hot and freshly cooked.

The George Inn is a typical, slightly old fashioned, British pub. That's meant as a compliment because this type of pub is fast disappearing from our culture and judging by the number of people in on a Saturday night the George must be in danger of going the same way. That would be a shame. It has a friendly staff, well stocked and tended bar, a wonderful open fire and great pub grub.

We booked into the george for Sunday lunch just after Christmas, we had seafood towers followed by roast lamb, delicious. My wife commented that "this is the best roast dinner I have had outside of home" which is something, she has also praised the chef to friends and family which is unusual.
