What a lovely experience. Joan and I with grandson Edward, down on the Jurassic Coast looking for fossils, successfully. The hotel was magnificent. Welcomed by a New Zealander, who couldn't do enough for us. Parking included, a bonus. The family room ultra comfortable. Dinner, choosing from the daily specials board, a revelation. The quality of the cooking, perfect. Breakfast can only be described by Edward, amazing. Fresh fruit with yoghurt, croissant, full English or other choice, fruit juice, tea, coffee or Edward's hot chocolate. Truly fantastic. All of the staff so attentive. Cannot say thank you enough.

Dropped in here on an impromptu visit to Bridport, was a bit sceptical of only 14 reviews given this place has been here for ages …still unsure why such a low number … Anyway, fish and chips on the menu, 2 sizes, small and large, we queried the size and told the large fish is as big as the plate, the small half the size - we went for large, it came and was small, when presented the server said ‘seems like it’s shrunk’ - it was ok, but quite thin and certainly not large nor £18 value wise. Goodness knows how small the small would have been ! Won’t be returning

We treated ourselves to Sunday Lunch out today and Wow! We had heard amazing things lately, about the standard of food at The George and this seriously, was the best Sunday Lunch I have had. Everything was just cooked to perfection, the red cabbage was exquisite and the cauliflower cheese would have been a fantastic meal on its own, it goes without saying that the beef, yorkies and roast potatoes were awesome too. I think its rare to go out for a roast and find everything miles better than you could do yourself at home but this is it! Portion sizes were incredibly generous .... we didn't quite make pudding, even though I really wanted to try the Lemon Posset. All in a welcoming, cosy environment, even our dog was made a fuss of! Would highly recommend.

We went for an evening meal with two friends. The menu was limited and some items sold out. Two of our party had the “tempura batter” fish which turned out to be ordinary (quite thick) batter. The steak was advertised as having a peppercorn sauce. It didn’t arrive and when we asked, it finally turned up as gravy with some peppercorns in it! My burger was nice and we all agreed the chips were good, if a bit sparse. The pudding two of us chose was not available so we had the panna cotta. However the fruit sauce on the top was “fizzy” and when we complained we were told the carton was kept in the fridge and was in date! All in all, it was an uninspired meal and we left unconvinced that the “chefs” actually knew what they were doing!

Well after a health scare (me) we are back out on our tour of bridport and surrounding areas. I was hesitant to visit a palmers pub, but our friends who we went with recommended it. The service and food was excellent I declined the beer and had the wine. This is not a reflection on the beer just a personal preference I just don't like palmers beer. The room was lovely, with a spacious modern bathroom, comfy bed and lovely harbour view. Breakfast was amazing, with fresh fruit, yogurt and croissants bought out to you before you made your hot food order, which was all delicious! Went for the roast dinners, pork and beef. Meal arrived, presented well. Food was excellent, with carrots and roast potatoes cooked to perfection. Pork and beef slices were thick portions not like the thin slices served by some restaurants. Great meal good value for money. Felt safe with the COVID compliance but also comfortable- we were given single use menus - the tracking app check in and sanitisers we all there. Stacey looked after us all evening and later on kept us amused. The food was great and the beer well kept. Calamari and whitebait starters were fab and mussels and scampi both delicious. I stopped here for fish and chips last Friday lunchtimeBIG MISTAKEI ordered haddock fillet, chips and mushy peas and was expecting something pretty good for the £15 asking priceTo my horror the dish was served up less than five minutes later ! This was quicker than a fish and chip shopThe fish was tough and slightly chewy, the chips were straight out of a bag into the fryer and the mushy peas must have been straight out of a tinThis is such a shame because I have had some very good meals at The George under the previous managementI won't be going back here to eat. At £15 the meal was wildly overpriced for what it wasThere are plenty of good places to eat in Bridport and I can see the competition seeing The George off under its present incarnation

I have been to many eating establishments over the years and I am always reluctant to give poor trip advisor reviews. However after visiting The George today for lunch, I feel compelled to do so. Whilst the barman was very friendly and helpful, the food was not of a good standard. Although the pub was not very busy, the food took a time to arrive to our table. I ordered a special from the board, which was a steak pie, mash and peas. The pie was obviously not fresh, as the meat inside the pie was dry and the pastry stale. In fact the pastry as the bottom of the pie was not even cooked. Gravy was added on the plate, which helped although this was thin and tasted as if it was made with a stock cube. It was the sort of meal you’d expect from a greasy spoon cafe, but I paid around £15.00 for this dish! The chef should be ashamed to serve something like this for the price. My partner had a burger which he said was ok, but greasy. I do hope the Landlord will attempt to improve standards, but this is not a place I want to spend my money again.

Such a shame but had to give it ago following the departure of the previous land Lord. You know when you order a meal and it's not one thing or another ,well I Ordered the steak and chips and it was just a piece of meat that lacked taste and imagination , served with chips that tasted of cheap cooking oil and a mushroom that was as bland as the steak. Poor quality ingredients cooked with no care or flare. sort of meal you dont send back , because it's not gonna be any better 2nd time round. What's interesting is that in a previous reply to a review, the current landLord makes the mistake of refering to the previous land Lord. If I was ordering the same meal 6 months ago, as I did often, I would have got a quality steak ( bought from Frampton butchers) beautifully chargriled with garlic butter. Triple cooked chips. Tomatoes on the vine again beautifully seasoned and cooked and A homemade sauce that was to die for. So contary to your remarks, he is a very tough act to follow and you have a lot to do if you think you can exceed him ! We always like to support local business and we had hoped we could continue to support The George, alas we won't be.

The George Hotel is probably the flagship of Bridport's pubs and restaurants. Since I joined it first time more than 30 years ago it provided a good home for many things, drinks, good entertainment, mostly superb food through the years and today home for the Monday club, the "Irish Traveller Friends". Coffee few pennies more than other places but therefor very good, IPA, in my mind the best beer for a German to consume in England always well kept from the pump. And the Guinness is second best in town! I m not telling you where the best is.

Taking this into account, the best I can say is that it needs time to settle in and give a generous 3 stars. Having said that, the new proprietor comes from a restaurant background, so this should be much better. We called in for a pre-concert meal. The menu was not particularly inspiring. We had smoked salmon/olive bread plus moules for starters. These were ok, but nothing special (e.g. no bread with the moules). However, for mains I had mackerel fillet on new potatoes. The mackerel was nice enough and well cooked, but for some bizarre reason the new potatoes were (deliberately) cold. There was nothing else included to add colour, so it looked very bland. My wife had what she thought was going to be a large mushroom with dried tomatoes and Parmesan (one of the 'specials'), but it arrived as a risotto; this would have been ok except that the risotto was very stodgy. The presentation left a lot to be desired. Neither of us finished our meals.(The gentleman on the table next to us ordered a veggie burger that turned out to be a bun filled with vegetables!)The staff were very friendly, but obviously new and uncertain in their roles. This pub is a potential gold mine, but the new landlord has a tough act to follow and should know better given his background. I hope this is not a deliberate strategy to move it down market. Sadly, it will be some time before we return.

I had a fine meal at the George during my recent stay in Bridport. The sea bass in caper and shrimp sauce was excellent. The only problem was that I was unsure whether the place was really a restaurant or a pub. Most of the tables were set out for meals but I ordered at the bar. There were just one or two people having a drink and not a meal. The lady behind the bar seemed to be doing everything (and doing it very well) - welcoming guests, serving beer, taking orders and communicating with the kichen. Occasionally someone else emerged from the kitchen to help out but it looked as if the George was under-staffed. Still , the meal was very good as was the beer and I'd be happy to go back.

You also had another second large party sitting in the bar area haven there Christmas meal. Have visited before for brunch which was excellent, also visited just for drinks but was put off by going on a regular basis because of their coffee. Now they serve a flat white in the size cup it should be in. Service with a smile and nice to see a biscuit on the side.

I called in here several times for a nice pint of the local Dorset Orchards cider while staying nearby. The bar staff were friendly and there was a nice atmosphere.

Came with friends and we were not disappointed. A fabulous meal which was faultless. It really is worth a visit as the food is extremely good and the service we received was second to none. Oliver served us and he was just as you would hope in terms of a waiter - not pushy, very helpful, good banter, professional, faultless. Our bar staff were also great. We will be back. Thank you

Popped into The George for the first time, early on a Thursday evening, for a drink and hopefully, a meal. One foot on entering, before having a chance to look around or go to the bar, we were immediately confronted with, "have you got a booking", which was a little off-putting. Having pre-chosen to eat there if possible we replied no, but hopeful. Then it got better. Although already very busy we were found a table for two. after a quick look at the menu we each ordered Sirloin steak. They arrived in good time were excellent, cooked as requested and quite large.

Four of us dropped in for a main course and a pudding. We ordered Moussaka, Sirloin Steak, Steak Diane and Lamb Tagine. All top notch! A minor criticism would be that the Tagine needed more spicing. Our Sweets were Eaton Mess, Bread and Butter Pudding and a Double Expresso, the Eaton Mess was the best of these and received rave reviews from two of our number. The George was busy on a Monday Night was comfortable and had a good vibe. It seemed fairly priced.

Our daughter booked the George as part of a birthday present for my husband. Never been here before as we live near Bournemouth. We arrived early and the lovely barman, sorry dont knw your name, he welcomed us with a big smile, he knew who we were as my daughter had pre paid our lunch. The owner Alan tgwn came over and wished my husband happy birthday which we though was very nice as most places don't even bother. My husband had the sirloin steak and it was very tender. I had tge George burger which was delicious, it came with coleslaw, and chunky chips all cooked fresh. I would highly recomend the George if your in Bridport. Well done to you all for a warm welcome and great lunch.

Didn’t actually visit myself but pre-booked for my stepdad as a birthday treat after visiting nearby Palmers Brewery. I wanted to pre-pay for them to have lunch which I was able to do over the phone with ease a couple of weeks before. They were greeted on arrival and thoroughly enjoyed the food, service was also great. Thank you to the owner Alan & member of staff (so sorry I can’t remember your name) for helping to organise and making it so easy! I’ll be sure to come in for dinner myself soon!

My husband and I have always loved The George - it’s were we did most of our courting! The present chef and staff make it a wonderful place to go once again. The menu is varied; the staff are excellent and the wine and beer are good. We often pop in before going across the road to watch something in the Arts Centre.

We really enjoyed our last visit to Cerne Abbas back in 2021 and remembered visiting the Giant Inn - so it was so lovely to come back once again here (on our annual break in Purbeck) for pre-walk drinks. We arrived not long after the pub had opened & had a lovely friendly welcome - we decided to sit outside in the rear garden, & it was so nice to see the sun breaking through as we enjoyed our drinks. As with the whole village, this is a very historic building with lots of history, & I'm sure the 'giant' of Cerne Abbas would choose this as his watering hole if he could come down from that hill! We really enjoyed our visit which set us up for the day & put a spring in our step for our hike around the beautiful countryside surrounding the village. Thanks for making our visit so pleasurable!

We used to go there for our Saturday Coffee, thinking that the place needed frequenting. They never re-opened the cafe after the lockdown, which is a shamel
