This is our third annual overnight at The George. Always lovely clean rooms, helpful staff , and a beautiful location. Food menu isn’t vast BUT food is really good. The building is stunning with wonderful history. It’s quirky , with uneven floors and equally uneven walls. Truly lovely place to stay. Have read some reviews and everyone has different expectations. But if you want authentic, historic , quirky this is the place to go. Dorchester abbey is a must to visit too, which is directly opposite. We will be back next year !

A real gem nestled in a typical 15th century British pub, full of charm and authenticity. The hotel perfectly combines the character of history with modern comfort. The breakfasts are absolutely delicious, generous and prepared with quality products — a real treat to start the day right. Special mention to the warm and attentive welcome: you immediately feel at home. Ideally located 10 minutes from an Oxford Park and Ride car park.

We have enjoyed visiting The George hotel restaurant for several years for lunch, dinner and special occasions. The food has greatly improved in tandem with the refurbishment a few years ago. Unfortunately the last few times we've visited we have been subjected to surly and rude behaviour from the male duty manager in the restaurant. We sincerely hope this is now not the norm as we have always enjoyed taking friends and family there - and indeed recommending the hotel as a place to stay.

Good service. Good variety of drinks. Staff were friendly. Considering they were dealing with two very drunken customers. We only used the bar 🍻.

Witnessed the manager tonight being really aggressive tonight towards a customer which is pretty concerning, the manager appeared drunk. I hope that they can sort the staffing issues out, I used to really like this pub

What should have been a memorable celebration at a historic local establishment turned into a deeply disappointing experience at The George Hotel in Dorchester-on-Thames. As longtime residents of the area for over 30 years, our family chose this venue for my father's 65th birthday dinner, only to encounter service that fell far below the standards expected of this renowned establishment. From the moment we arrived, the service was notably poor. After waiting several minutes, we were greeted by a staff member whose demeanor was unwelcoming. When my sister noticed a birthday promotion leaflet and inquired about it, the staff member dismissed us with an unnecessarily sarcastic comment about people "suddenly realizing it's their birthday," despite our genuine celebration. The situation deteriorated further when I received my starter, a crispy cauliflower dish, which contained a hair embedded in the batter. Upon returning the dish, the same staff member brought back what he claimed was "a fresh one," but it was clearly the same cold dish with the hair still visible. When I brought this to our waitress's attention (who was, notably, very professional and apologetic), the male staff member confronted me in front of other diners, raising his voice and questioning my integrity regarding the hair in the food. While our waitress was exemplary in her service and apologetic for the situation, this unfortunate interaction with the male staff member (who we later learned is named Hanni) completely ruined what should have been a joyous family celebration. The aggressive and unprofessional manner in which he handled a simple customer service issue was unacceptable for an establishment of this caliber. While The George Hotel holds a special place in our local community's landscape, this experience has unfortunately tarnished its reputation in our eyes. Until management addresses these fundamental service and training issues, particularly in handling customer concerns with professionalism and respect, I cannot recommend this establishment for special occasions or regular dining.

The George Hotel is an absolutely stunning building with so many little and big things that make the whole stay a wonderful experience. Each room is individually themed such as the James Bond room and the Midsomer Murder room. I stayed in a room dedicated to the British rowers who train locally. The room was very clean. The bed was incredibly comfortable with a variety of pillows to choose from. There was also a Nespresso machine, instant coffee, good biscuits and bottled water available in the room. I could not resist having a bath with the duck provided, a lovely touch! Hot breakfast the next day was cooked to order so in the interim a visit the buffet area offered croissants, cereals, yogurts, fruit etc. The fruit salad had beautiful small bites of watermelon in it, which was so refreshing. The cooked breakfast arrived quickly after, and was presented beautifully. The spinach was wilted perfectly, and not at all watery. The vegan black pudding was surprisingly very good. The vegan sausage was also delicious. From me, the whole experience was super apart from the public toilets in the restaurant area. They really do need a deep clean. It is a shame that the overall attention to detail that is so obvious across the hotel seems to be lacking in this one area.

Charming hotel a stone's throw from unlivable Oxford. Historic building, traditional and refined setting with modern touches (the gin courtyard); vintage room, a nice country pub attached, interesting restaurant (limited menu, but it's still old England...). Really nice, we'll be back

After not visiting this pub for a while, I decided to come for dinner and unfortunately it isn’t the gem it used to be. Firstly, the pub hasn’t been updated in the ten years I have been visiting with basic furnishings, old carpets and lack of paint. It is also very cold in the pub and as we are transitioning into spring from a long winter, the sunny weather can be misleading and by the evenings it is chilly and the pub has always lacked in warmth. But as I am paying for a cosy and warm experience in ac country pub, I expect to feel warm and not feel cold. The staters were lovely though lacks presentation and garnish. The mains were poor and it makes you wonder why the pub itself was so empty. The Thai curry was anemic, and the eggs on the ham, egg and chips were poor with crispy bottoms. It isn’t a Japanese donburi bowl where they should have crispy bottoms. And as a chef myself, I know the difference between cheap cheese and cheeses worth their price and unfortunately the lasagna was of very poor quality. It had been overcooked so much that the cheese had split and become claggy. The mince wasn’t even in a rich tomato sauce and was absolutely tasteless and as it’s a lasagne it should have a béchamel sauce to make it go creamy. If it did have one, it must have evaporated. The chips were nice though overwhelming on the plates and as the menu states it comes with a side salad - seven leaves for not equate to a side salad which has come out of a mixed salad bag. Overall very poor quality. The service was good and the prices are good but the quality of food and the quality of the setting does not reflect the price.

Great Sunday lunch. Good portion size. Plenty of veg, which I love. The only negative for me was the gravy, I believe there was quite a lot of pepper in there and that is not to my taste. The staff were lovely and very friendly landlord. Bonus today, live music as there was a party in the courtyard. Will definitely be back
