Goodbye! Oh dear! How can I tell you about our favourite local pub? This morning 28 July 2024 a friend knowing our love of the George Inn said the local newspaper had announced the pub was closing today. Our last visit was on the 21st June for a wonderful lunch. In all the occasions we have visited we have never had a bad experience and always been complimentary over the cuisine as their chef Dave knew his skills in his menus would please patrons. With plans in for a change of use it is not likely this wonderful hostelry will ever revert to being a pub. The local community is much concerned re this closure so we are not the only people who will miss venturing onto the Brendon Hills to celebrate family occasions. Tears are welling!! Au Revoir dear George…….. Russell D 965

We had a super friendly welcome, and were treated to a mini appetiser of Italian cheese on toast brought out by the chef; a nice little touch. As a party of 4 we all had different meals, mains & desserts, and were very pleased with all the dishes, which were all clearly home-made. I wouldn’t hesitate to return when in the area again, and would recommend to others.

Don’t be put off by the front of the George Inn, it looks in need of some cleaning up which will make all the difference. Inside the bar area is great and the food is excellent, the service is also very good (Sue behind the bar and David in the kitchen 👍) Rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. Linked this two night stay with two days on the local Wimbleball Lake with great fishing. Will definitely stay here again.

Lovely warm inviting pub. My husband & I stopped off for lunch onto to walk around Wimbleball Lake. Was a treat for my birthday. We both ordered a main meal & they were both delicious! My husband said the chicken curry was really flavoursome with a bit of heat; my vegetarian pasta dish was really tasty. Highly recommend & the couple running the pub were very welcoming & friendly.

We had dinner here on Saturday evening with family in a party of 6 + 2 dogs. It’s such a gorgeous location. The food was excellent (especially the pork in a wine and sage sauce, and the seafood linguine). Lovely Exmoor beers too. Service was very friendly but It’s a shame we had to ask several times for a few items (spoon, glass of water etc).. My husband and I also stayed a few nights in the pub accommodation. Nice room and enough room for our dogs’ cage. It was a little embarrassing that the chef hadn’t been told how long we were staying and we hadn’t been told that breakfast isn’t normally served on a Monday or Tuesday as the pub kitchen is closed. However the chef was very accommodating and was kind enough to serve us delicious breakfasts even on his day off! Altogether a pleasant stay and a particular thank you to David for making us feel so welcome.

It was another big birthday treat for me. My wife had fortunately booked our table, but, with the weather just ‘so’ we chose the terrace, beneath the umbrella which was undulating gently in a slight breeze. We felt that with the stunning rural view, an ambience of utter peace, we had been whisked over to France. The countryside was completely quiet! We shared a king prawn starter but there were only three of them, four would have made it just right for the occasion. My wife had the beef curry with sensational flavour, whilst once again I had the duck and port jus. This was delicious and cooked to perfection, a most generous serving. We finished with the caramelised apple pannacotta. An interesting dessert with subtle flavour. We would liked to have finished with a really good espresso (with apologies to any offended Italian). Having raised this issue before I tentatively asked ‘Tash’ who was serving both tables and bar with such poise, as to whether this was now a possibility. Regrettably NO! I shall now let my request ‘go’ on future visits. Interestingly, a friend took us to the hostelry in Simonsbath, Exmoor, where the espressos were excellent! We could have tarried at the George until the sun set but other duties called, so we left, well sated.

Wanting to celebrate our Sapphire Anniversary we decided once again on The George Inn at Brompton Regis in The Exmoor National Park in Somerset. We had a very warm welcome, always a good start, and an excellent meal. We both had local smoked trout starter, which my wife followed with the fish curry that she said was superb. I had the very generous duck breast on a bed of red cabbage accompanied by blackberries in port, cooked to perfection. My wife enjoyed her chocolate brownie and ice cream and I finished on the mango cheese cake presented in a Martini glass, very delicate! The only disappointing thing missing was the lack of coffee. We had heard that there would be a coffee machine this spring, but it has not arrived yet!

We needed to lighten our mood so returned to a local pub where we’ve had good experience previously. We were not disappointed. Just the same warm welcome from everyone including the locals. The starter of smoked trout on bruschetta with crème fraiche and spring onion was simply fantastic. Followed by pork belly roasted to perfection and presented superbly in a well proportioned helping left one with space for a dessert. This was the chef’s speciality today, a scrumptious apple Tart Tatin with a crunchy glaze and topped with vanilla ice cream. My comment and description is not over the top. The chef, David, knows how to offer interesting and well presented menus. His portion size is ‘tres continental’ allowing to eat well and not feel bloated. However, the only problem in that you are unable to finish your meal with a great coffee. I am completely bemused that this pub doesn’t have a coffee machine yet offers food of this quality.

I recently took my family for a meal at the George and was blown away by the experience! The atmosphere was walm and welcoming, the staff were so friendly. There was a great choice of food on the menu, I would of loved to see a wider choice of fish dishes, but that's just because I love fresh fish and muscles, scallops, sea bream are a real treat. Our waitress was Hannah, a lovely young girl, she made sure we were well looked after our entire visit. All our food was utterly amazing! We are self confessed food snobs, and we could not fault the food, every detail, from presentation, taste, texture, portion size, warm plates, time between each sitting, was perfect!!!!! We were so impressed we asked to meet the chief. A lovely bubbly lady named Ann Boniface, were so glad we took the time to meet and congratulate her on the food, she was so passionate about her food, clearly enjoyed her work and was a total pleasure to talk to. My wife and I spent 3 nights at The George on a B&B basis ( but the standard of the food was so high and the hospitality so warm that we had each of our evening meals there). We had no prior knowledge of it, but love the area and it was extremely well placed for some glorious walks. Well, we are pleased to have discovered a real gem. The owners were so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble...we took our young dog and could not have been made to feel more welcome. Sue, one half of the ownership, is a dog lover and our dog absolutely fell for her! Or was it the chews she so generously dispensed! The food was excellent - the home made Steak and Ale pie was perhaps the nicest I have had in many years...the homemade burger was excellent and a manly challenge to eat it all!....and my wife had the fish and chips every evening! The double room was very good indeed, with a large bath to die for, TV and tea/coffee making facilities (and an endless supply of biscuits!). We really can't fault this lovely Inn,... Great hearty English breakfasts...great evening conversation with the local folk...decent ale and some fine malt whisky's. The owners deserve to do really well. We will certainly return there. Beautiful setting; a quintessential English garden. We have visited Kitnors over the past few years whilst holidaying in Devon but our last visit was very disappointing. Ordered cheese on toast and cheese scones. Thin sliced loaf with thinly processed cheese. Scones were tiny with thinly sliced processed cheese. Small portions of chutney. All served on small tea plates. We’ve always promoted Kitnors to others but sadly not anymore. Staff were friendly but food was poor.

I reviewed the White Horse on the 18 April 24 when it re-opened after a period of failure. It was wonderful then just to have the pub open for drinks but now Lisa and Tim have a limited menu serving meals from Thursdays to Saturdays evenings and Sunday lunches. Some friends dropped into stay the other night and treated us to a Sunday lunch at the pub, the first since re-opening, which was not just good but exceptional. The beef was first rate with five vegetables beautifully cooked. The place was booked out and all by locals enjoying great hospitality filling the room with animated conversation. We shall be going again as soon as we can! On Mondays our 1759 Guinness Club is now able to regain our home in Stogumber’s White Horse. Last night we met to enjoy Irelands greatest stout and gained a fair few members. Word is spreading!
