First and foremost the waiting staff and kitchen staff are a credit to the company. I cannot fault them at all. They were polite and helpful, the food was outstanding. If you requested anything they were happy to help. Every single guest commented on they portion sizes being generous and the food quality being amazing. We had an intimate wedding reception with a weekend stay. There were no pre warnings to other guests that a wedding was being held, no signage from the hotel. We felt quite uncomfortable with the disapproving looks some of the guests gave us. No special greeting for the bride/groom. Our bridal suite wasn't dressed for a wedding, there was no nice special touches, the bridal vanity station could do with updating or at least a bigger mirror and more comfortable chair. the manager who met with us was quite rude and very rough while handling my home made wedding cake, I heard after the fact that the cake had been damaged and had to be repaired by the groom. Communication lacked throughout the booking process, things we were offered and asked for weren't present on the day. It's an extremely lovely hotel, perfect for a standard weekend away. Bathrooms could do with updating they felt quite cheap. Floorboards are extremely loud but it does make it feel more rustic. i wouldnt recommend it to people for a wedding unless they privately hire their own wedding coordinator for their big day. The location and food really were amazing if it wasn't for that and the waiting staff my review would have been 2 stars. Management needs to shake up a bit, of the 3 managers we met 2 were rude.

Beautiful country hotel nestled in the Quantock foothills. From the local gins and ales served on the manicured lawns before the Sunday roast with the tenderest slow roast sirloin with the silkiest gravy to the homemade scones for afternoon tea... Well worth getting lost in the woods for...

Stayed for two nights with dinner on both night and breakfast each morning. Welcome & friendliness of staff throughout our stay could not be faulted; nice comfy room (yes, a little tired & dated, but very clean & comfortable). Food was very good, service, presentation & quality of ingredients all great. Wine list and variety OK but not great. Breakfast was very good and price vs quality excellent - really could not fault any of the food - always pipping hot and hot plates for hot food which is always a big tick! The hotel is remote and takes a little effort - winter it is great for nestling down and sitting by the fire, summer you would have walking from the front door into the Quantock hills... or venturing up to the coast & nearby Dunster too. Would certainly recommend.

Combe House is tucked away off the A39. We visited as a result of an excellent value offer on Travelzoo. Our room was clean pleasant and quiet. The food was absolutely excellent and menu was enhanced by superb daily specials. We had cooked breakfast as part of our deal but I can understand customers not being happy with being charged extra for a sausage if not on the same deal. The staff were pleasant and polite but it would be fair to say their attention to detail wasn’t first class. Overall would give it 6 stars though as it was a brilliant, enjoyable stay.

What a fabulous hotel. Excellent service and all the staff were friendly and went above and beyond to be helpful. Upon arrival I informed the reception staff that I was coeliac and for all my meals they remembered and offered me GF options. They even provided GF cereal in the mornings without being asked, which was a very nice touch and helped me feel heard. Only point would be that even though staff are very aware of GF dietary requirements, there was some confusion over breakfast items I could and couldn't have. One staff member said I could have the hash browns and after chomping them down happily, a second member nonchalantly stated I couldn't and wandered off oblivious to my immediate panic! Thankfully, the chef reassured me that the hash browns WERE GF so panic over! Very much enjoyed being served above and beyond and thankfully had no symptoms following my meals. GF food aside, the gardens are beautiful and the local walking is fabulous. We will definitely be returning.

I stayed here at the beginning of September 2021. The food was good first time around, although service was about as poor as it gets. The general approach at that time appeared to be "The answer's 'no'. What's the question?" My wife and I were in the location in September this year and we decided to stop off for afternoon tea. After all the food had been good year previously and I'd had memorable afternoon teas here before. The afternoon tea lived up to expectations and was absolutely fine, but my wife likes skimmed milk and I have semi-skimmed. We asked for a jug of each, but we were made to feel as if we had asked for something completely unreasonable. We had to make do with just semi-skimmed. That was OK. Presumably they didn't have any skimmed at the time, but it was the manner in which we were refused a jug of skimmed milk that was so surprising. It was quite abrupt. They forgot to bring the cutlery. We waited...and waited and then I gave up and went in search of elusive staff. No apology, just a curt "I have a lot of guests to serve. I'll bring them to you soon." In fairness, they did seem to be busy, but that's no excuse for rudeness and no excuse for not serving us properly when they served our afternoon tea to us. As others have done, I have found the manager's approach to give the impression that his guests should consider themselves lucky to be permitted to stay at his hotel. This seems to be reflected in many of his responses to guest reviews that point out matters that perhaps were not as good as they might have been expected to be. At the end of my last review I said I wouldn't return, but this hotel has an emotional tie for me from childhood holidays, which is why I brought my wife here for afternoon tea. No matter how much I feel an emotional tie I don't think I shall be returning to a hotel where I no longer feel welcome. Very sad.

Driving up from the public car park where you can walk the dog in the woods before lunch The overall first impression of this hotel was what a lovely location for a country hotel. We parked and with our cocker in tow made for the reception desk. I had booked a table for two with a dog but was told that they hadn't got the booking with a dog only a table for two. We were then shown to a table beside a window. A woman rudely pushed by me stating she wanted the table and had booked it during the week. My booking was made nearly two weeks previously! After some discussion between the staff we were told the table was ours and she was taken to another table. We went to sit only to find a loudspeaker right behind my chair playing music. I requested we be moved or, at least that the music was turned off. We were told this was the only table they had and again that they hadn't expected the dog! I did have a dog after all who needed somewhere to sit in peace. The food when it came was hot but my husband's lamb was very dry and overcooked. There was a poor selection of whiskeys. Overall the worst experience we have had in Somerset where eating establishments are concerned.

This was the first time we'd been to Coombe House Hotel. It was in a beautiful out of the way spot and the buildings had a lovely ambience. Being a Monday we found most other pubs and restaurants were shut, so we thought we'd give this one a try given it was a hotel and it was our wedding anniversary. The wine and the starters were great (scallops and the ham hock terrine). However, when the steaks came they were pretty small for £25 and worse, 50% of mine and a good 33% of my husband's was actually inedible gristle ( and he can usually eat anything!). The meat part was tough and tasteless, so much so we weren't entirely convinced they were actually anything more than from a bit of low quality brisket. The chef would have clearly known the bad quality of this meat before he cooked it, but then he/she would presumably have been responsible for ordering meat from regular suppliers. No supermarket I've ever been to would have attempted to sell such a visibly poor quality cut at ANY price, let alone try to charge £25 per head for it! Quite shocking. The nice waiter however appeared to be very used to such observations and immediately said he wouldn't charge us for it. Likewise, the next door table weren't charged for their bottle of wine because they had to send their main courses back to be reheated because they came out cold, but they also told us that they weren't happy with the quality of the chicken and the tuna they'd been given after hearing us talk with the waiter. Apart from the main courses though, everything else was fine, but one can't help wondering where on Earth they source their way below par meat from. It rather spoiled the evening for us, so I'm afraid we won't be rushing back.

Having read the reviews we were looking forward to a decent meal in the hotel restaurant but, to put it mildly, it was, overall, extremely disappointing. The cold fish platter to start was of generous proportions but the abundant crayfish were wet & tasteless. However, this starter proved to be the best part of the meal! My wife had the fish dish of the day but the Hake, when it arrived, was overcooked, dry and seemingly old - as if it had been cooked and then warmed up some time later. The accompanying new potatoes were soggy and tasted old - as if they'd been kept in the fridge and then re-heated. The slow cooked pork that I had was a generous portion and the skin was crisp (though surprisingly not bubbly) but some of the flesh was very, very chewy and tasted old - again as if it had been cooked some time before, kept in the fridge and then re-heated. To finish of this very disappointing meal we thought we'd have an espresso coffee to revive our taste buds. This was a grave mistake as the coffee was disgusting - just a dark, very bitter apology for the real thing. Sorry restaurant but you could certainly do better.

After reading other reviews I am trying hard to fathom out what happened when we visited this little hidden gem. Beautiful setting on the edge of the Quantock Hills, with amazing views of the Bristol Channel, Cardiff Bay and beyond. However, I feel compelled to write about our experience. We were visiting the area and noticed a deal so it was perfect to try out this lovely place and celebrate our friend’s birthday. The rooms were quaint with lovely decor but the wardrobe, bed and chest of drawers seemed to be held up on corners with bits of wood, which in fairness could be quite dangerous. Linen and room very clean, but we had to make our own beds and dispose of our towels outside the room and complete a list for anything we needed replacing. Unfortunately, although the towels were clean, they smelt of greasy cooking. The bathroom was a bit tired in corners with missing skirting board plus old mastic and gaps. The shower didn’t work properly and wasn’t a drench but a big drip and we struggled to get it working correctly, it was either scolding hot or freezing cold. The radiators were freezing so we asked if they could be sorted. The owner disguised in a mask said they needed bleeding as we were at the end of the building, which was strange as we were over the reception and main building. These should have been bled prior to any guest arriving. Food was great and cooked well with good presentation, however the cooked breakfast that you had to pay for by item got smaller as the days went on. We paid for Bed & Breakfast for 3 nights and a complimentary glass of prosecco to go with the first night’s dinner. The menu was good but rather small if you are staying for 3 nights and only eat fish. The fish was changed every night but the potatoes and sauce and veg stayed the same. The staff were good and polite and attentive but seemed very busy and quite young. After the first night and second morning we were evicted to the over flow room alone. One morning at breakfast we were asked what cooked breakfast we would like before we all had even sat down and got to the self-service Continental breakfast as the chef went home at 10am? It seemed if you had a deal, you were moved out of the main restaurant quite promptly. It may have been that we laughed a lot and the others were dead miserable and you were worried to make a noise or use the pepper grinder or crunch your toast (which needed to be replaced as it took around 5-8minutes to produce a slice). After dinner and breakfast, the items were cleared away very promptly apart from your own dirty crockery ready for the next evening or breakfast sitting. You couldn’t really relax as you felt you were in the way. Our friends had all the same experiences so it wasn’t just us being fussy. After paying near on £500 for 3 days, you expect a little more love. One day whilst out sightseeing we tried to call to book our evening table, the phone must have rung off at least four times so we then emailed but it still wasn’t booked. The final straw was at check out when they said it’s our fault that we didn’t ask for the free glass of prosecco for 4 guests (with the first evening meal) and would not honour it by taking one of the 4 bottles that we had purchased off the bill. The management would not even come out to speak to us which was very poor considering we were now making a complaint. The deal they advertised was a free glass of prosecco and they didn’t stick to their offer. It is complete nonsense that we should have to remind staff of the deal as they should be aware, and if anything should be offering this to us. We also noticed that there were no staff at reception when anyone was waiting to be seated or checked in. As we walked out of the main entrance door the dog mess was still there from the night before which was there to greet the next lucky guest. It is such a shame as all of this is just sloppiness and could be easily remedied with a little TLC for your paying guest but seemed penny pinching and ruined what should have been an amazing mini break.

Friendly people and generally good room. A couple of small things which could easily be changed really let the experience down though. Room: shower was weedy electric one which didn’t work that well Food: evening roast was recycled lunch so roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings were chewy and tired. Also breakfast could be dramatically improved by proper orange juice and nice coffee, instead of the cheapest possible version of both. ... and staff should taste the food so they can advise customers what different options are like.

Very beautiful location and premises. Very tranquil and perfect place for a function or small wedding. Went for a high tea and cream tea combo. The only reason for the 4* review is because we asked for water as we were seated outside in 28 degree heat and we had to ask twice before it arrived. Also, it is very expensive for not a lot of food. The hotel is a former water mill with a crinkly roofline - our bedroom floor matched this & sloped off in different directions. We enjoyed a lovely hill walk on on our first evening, which led us through woodland to the heather covered hills above - with fine views of the River Severn. The staff were all polite & friendly - although stingy on milks for coffee. (On the first morning, we asked for 8 pots & received 4 - this was sufficient for just 2 drinks.) Our first floor room - with our dog - was light enough, with a pleasant view across the grounds. We had our personal helicopter in the bathroom - the fan was very noisy & stayed on c 1/2 hour after turning the light off. The shower was the smallest I have ever encountered (42 cm square), with a fixed ceiling head. Consequently, a hair wash came for free on entry. In addition, turning to wash my feet in the cramped space, caused me to knock the shower lever onto hot.Overall the room and linen were all clean. If you live on tech, WiFi in the Hotel was very limited & we could only make phone calls from the car park.Cooked breakfast was a well balanced mix. The veggie cooked breakfast was better than the average - nice to have halloumi cheese instead of the usual boring veg sausage.

Hidden up a small road this hotel is a gem. Lovely staff and wonderful food. The gardens out the front are well kept and fullness interesting plants. We stayed in room 19 which had its own conservatory. We had a lovely comfy large bed and tea and coffee making facilities. Unfortunately our room was underneath a room with very noisy floorboards and did disturb us alot in the mornings

We stayed at this delightful hotel tucked away in Holford for 3 days in late February. Our room was unique but with everything we needed for our stay, tucked away under the eves of this Hotel formerly a mill. The staff were friendly and helpful with lots of local knowledge, the bar area is cosy and easy to chat to other guests. Food is mostly locally sourced, we bumped into the butcher delivering supplies! We enjoyed the menu choices especially the special board. We came during the week as by Friday it was much busier with a different atmosphere.

We had a great stay at Combe House, lovely atmosphere and staff, dogs are welcome to stay also 🙂. The food is excellent, and they have a well stocked bar. Rooms are clean fresh and bright.

Staying for one night, we needed to check in slightly earlier than the 15:00 hour stated so we requested it. When we did arrive at 13:30 we were charged £20 for an early check in. The hotel appeared to have few guests. WiFi was at an extra cost in the room, a cooked breakfast was also at an extra cost. The breakfast itself [continental] was sparse and not very good. All things considered not worth the £101 bill for one night

Apart from the grounds amd the area, we have nothing good to say about this place. Supposed to have stayed in a higher premium room which did NOT reflect the standard of the outside of the building. There was an earwig on the sleeve of the dressing gown, if it is warm make sure you ask for a fan. Do not expect to have anything for breakfast other than cereal or toast for anything under £6 (porridge). Room apparently had an enclosed garden for the dog, no there wasnt and we were told most people lock their dogs in a crate so that the doors to the garden can be left open. Made a substantial complaint back in September and unfortunately after receiving a pointless response 2 wks later we have been ignored since. Absolutely disgusting service, we were recommended this place but have to state categorically that the inside of this building and the service does not warrant the amount of stars given on the outside of the building. Definitely not worth it

Dropped in from a walk on the Quantocks with our four dogs.... there is a really great dog-friendly bar area where we enjoyed an amazing cream tea, with the most delicious warm scones, yum ! Have been for lunch on previous visits with dogs and enjoyed that just as much, great homemade food and scrummy cakes. Highly recommend this lovely place especially if you have dogs, always a very warm welcome and great food

Beautiful setting; a quintessential English garden. We have visited Kitnors over the past few years whilst holidaying in Devon but our last visit was very disappointing. Ordered cheese on toast and cheese scones. Thin sliced loaf with thinly processed cheese. Scones were tiny with thinly sliced processed cheese. Small portions of chutney. All served on small tea plates. We’ve always promoted Kitnors to others but sadly not anymore. Staff were friendly but food was poor.

I reviewed the White Horse on the 18 April 24 when it re-opened after a period of failure. It was wonderful then just to have the pub open for drinks but now Lisa and Tim have a limited menu serving meals from Thursdays to Saturdays evenings and Sunday lunches. Some friends dropped into stay the other night and treated us to a Sunday lunch at the pub, the first since re-opening, which was not just good but exceptional. The beef was first rate with five vegetables beautifully cooked. The place was booked out and all by locals enjoying great hospitality filling the room with animated conversation. We shall be going again as soon as we can! On Mondays our 1759 Guinness Club is now able to regain our home in Stogumber’s White Horse. Last night we met to enjoy Irelands greatest stout and gained a fair few members. Word is spreading!
