We had a reasonably good time at dinner. Our Irish waiter was engaging. That was a plus. The food was rather mediocre, though not bad. The portions were large enough, but not very tasty. The gnocci was drowned and deflavored by a light sauce, rather like a broth. Our only real complaint is that the place has/had a policy of pushing guests through. We were required to leave our table in a specified time, which left us no time for desert or after-dinner drinks.

Les tarifs sont de plus corrects pour le pays ! Allez y sans hésiter, et une chose qui ne trompe pas, il n'y a que des gens du coin qui profite de ces lieux !!!

Wanted to give a visitor to Scotland a feel for where you can go from Glasgow on a short day trip, so the run up to Inverary seemed ideal. We needed a restaurant that was dog friendly and The George advertises as an award winner in that regard. Some "dog friendly" restaurants are more "dog tolerant" but this was not the case with The George - the staff seemed genuinely pleased to see her. The restaurant has lovely ambience with the multiple wood burners and solid stone walls. Service was excellent and the food was good, but perhaps not outstanding. Nevertheless, a great experience and if you have a dog and are looking for somewhere to eat in Inverary, you can't go wrong.

What a lovely , heart warming place. My (fussy) daughter & I had a meal by the bar , a seafood platter & additional oysters for myself & a lovely chicken dish for my fussy daughter. Staff were warm , fun and attentive - not just with us but everyone coming in regulars and others alike. The food was delicious , if you go - then do try the grilled oysters with bacon jam. Top notch. I will return.

I really hate to review this pub so low, because the staff were very friendly and hard working, and it's a lovely building in a great location. But I can honestly say I've never paid so much money for such bog standard food. I paid 16 pound for penne bolognese. I ordered it at the bar and it honestly arrived at the table before I sat down. Microwaved? Either way, that's never promising. For that much money, you'd expect decent presentation or for it to come with a side salad or garlic bread. It honestly reminded me of something I used to cook when I was a student. I wouldn't mind if I'd paid less for it but you simply can't charge that much for something so basic!

Bravi

Stayed at the George and it was a Saturday, they also had live music, which was a nice surprise. Decor is mainly wood, it is an old building and it is nice that they have maintained it. There is a newer section used for the breakfast. It was very busy on that evening, service was good, could have been better. The food is pricey for what it is. Venison Croquettes - were disappointing, the texture and flavours were bland. The soup was nice. The hanger steak was good, well seasoned and tasty. I had the burger and the chef spoiled the experience. The burger was served, looked lovely, but the bun was stone cold, not toasted, not warmed through, just taken out of the packet and used. The burger overall was tasty, but the whole experience went down the drain as soon as i picked the burger up. No soft warm bun to bite into it, was cold dense - no butter, not toasted or warmed through. No excuse for that. I have never had a cold bun and hope I never have another one, the texture etc just ruined it. The drinks were reasonably priced.

Returned to the George hotel for dinner and was really disappointed, on previous visits the food and service was great but this time the food and service was terrible, oysters were great but the venison croquettes, which were £14 , were tasteless as was the chicken pate , if it didn't have the onion chutney there would've been no taste. The fish was good but chips were overcooked, and we got a cheese burger , which arrived with no burger in the bun !! When I got my meal replaced with a burger in the bun it was like a frozen burger , which at £17 is very poor. I left at least half of the burger and fries and the waitress asked if it was OK, told her it was tasteless and she said I'll let him know, but got our bill , which was nearly £100 for bad food, and nothing more was said. The wine we had was good but tried to get a seat in the bar for the live music but was told all the seats were reserved. Was really disappointed, even the staff were quite dismissive and the service was poor.

We stayed here for 2 nights. The downstairs is amazing, bars and restaurants very good food and really quirky with old stone walls and a real feeling of centuries of life. The bedrooms were spacious and very modern and fresh, no maintenance issues. Bathrooms were lovely. We had breakfast on the second morning having made plans elsewhere on the first morning, however, although a lovely breakfast we felt at £15 each this was quite over priced. One pot of coffee between 2 people barely had enough for one cup each. The breakfast was lovely but was over priced. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We had dinner on first night which was lovely as well.

Visited during week’s stay around Argyll & Bute. Old atmospheric, characterful bar/restaurant (rooms also) – very pleasant if a little dark, as such places tend to be. Serving food in the afternoon when alternative in Inverary was not, so quite busy. Very nice food including tasty, good value Beef Cheek dish. Specials tried by others were also very good. Good Loch Fyne ales. Friendly service but a little rushed due to being busy and short-staffed, and so a little slow at times. Would recommend a try.

Both me and my wife ordered the steak pie and too be honest it was the best we have ever had, tender pieces of steak melted in our mouths and not a bit of fat or grizzle to be found, perfect! The price for such good food was surprisingly reasonable. I had an appetizer, starter, main, dessert and a pint...all for under £37.00. I'd definitely return again. One off note - if the bartenders are required to wear masks they should keep them on (like the wait staff); they were constantly putting them on, taking the off and starting the process all over again or just wearing them around their necks.

The food!We stayed at the George for one night, but dined there for lunch on 4 occasions and one dinner. The staff & hosts were excellent, with particular mentions for Alex, Kris, and the fountain of knowledge, Donald. We sampled many dishes from the menu; all were to a very high standard. Beef cheeks, scallops, steak, pork belly & steak pie. Wholesome, quality food, expertly cooked. The bar selection was equally impressive, and the standard of service & knowledge were as good as you can expect to find anywhere. The hotel room was spacious, comfortable, spotlessly clean, with fine decor and a charm of its own. Consistently great over multiple visits, we will return as soon as we can to make our way through the rest of the menu and sample more whiskey and rum recommendations. Genuinely one of the best all-around bar/restaurant/hotel establishments we've had the pleasure of visiting.

The hotel has gone to great lengths to create a self contained large garden bar. There are a large number of tables each complete with its own umbrella providing protection from the weather, whether that be rain or sunshine all sitting on a layer of artificial turf. The garden bar, as the name suggests, has an outside bar complete with large tv and a cooking area where chefs prepare a variety of pizzas, burgers and chips. Ordering is via an app which is easy to log onto and service which is to the table only is quick and efficient. A bonus is the effort the hotel has gone to to be eco friendly with all food and drink containers being recyclable and recyclable bins are also provided. We ordered messy chips ( chips and curry sauce), a spicy sausage pizza and a meat fest pizza. The app said it would be ready in 11 minutes and amazinglynit was! This was our first time visiting and we were impressed. PS it is also a dog friendly area.

Love The George as been there a few times but always feel it could do with being a tad brighter as even during the middle of the day very dark and difficult to read the menu or the specials board.Even if they added those fake candles to improve the ambience of the place it wouldn't cost much to make an effective difference or fairy lights could be nice too. The steak pie was delicious with mashed potato but I convinced myself I had a kids portion as not much mashed potato or veg on my plate at all. I asked the waitress and she just laughed. I was still hungry after it and could easily have had two Portions. The chips could be better tasting too.I couldn't give four or five stars just down to this but the staff are always helpful and friendly despite being busy the majority of the time.

The food was good, and there’s a good wine list. The scallops were delicious but a little gritty. Our waitress was lovely but as we were seated close to the bar we had to listen to the gruff front of house manager bark orders at the staff. He was also blunt with us when we arrived informing us that we only had 90 minutes for the booking which we were not informed of prior to arriving. We felt rushed (as there was a wait between courses) towards the end which isn’t what you expect for a meal for two costing over £130 with drinks. There’s no bar area, though there is a ‘garden bar’ which is a short walk round the corner and is sheltered. Handy when you are turfed out and haven’t finished your drink!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

What an absolute disappointment. We visited the George last year and had a super meal with lovely service and loved the vibe of the place and did think of coming to stay another time. After all the rooms look lovely and it had amazing reviews. On our return trip to Loch Fyne this year, we decided to visit the G Bar, the lovely garden bar behind the restaurant for some food and to watch the finals of the Euros. Our thought was that although it was an England Italy match, the fact they had tv's up and offered an evening of watching the match with food served at the table that it would be a pleasant evening in a beautiful part of the world. We fully expected a bit of light hearted banter, as an English man and Scottish women, we were fully prepared to be teased a bit or even that Italy might get more cheers than England. Thats cool the best team wins and all. We visited early in day and were told we couldn't book it was first come first serve When we arrived several tables were reserved. So not sure what that was about. The atmosphere at the bar quickly descended into a sense of disdain towards the England supports that where there, (Spending our money in your place of business.) By the staff. Mainly the main guy who seemed to in charge. He placed a large Italy flag in front of bar just before the match, which raised a few eyebrows, his comments where to the client who in jest made a comment. "My bar none of your business." Some further banter lead to his comment of, "As i said my bar you have no say on what i do." Fair enough i guess its his bar, but his aggressive attitude and strutting back and forth with a clear attitude of disdain for the many English who were present, and to be fair Scots, who some of where just happy to see the UK in a final, made many feel uncomfortable. He then turned the music up so loud it was not possible to hear the tv at all. I asked if would be ok to turn down so we could hear commentary, when the waitress asked the bar staff laughed and it stayed the same. A bloke sat on wall in front of our table blocking view, no social distancing he was right next to another table, and he asked staff if he could sit there, they saw he was blocking view and they again said "sure." The atmosphere felt somewhat hostile which is a shame, as i really love Inveraray and it has tainted the place a bit. After some eyebrow raising between guests a few left including us. We felt very unwelcome and looked down on. The food sadly was pretty rubbish too. I wasn't expecting much, after all it was simple garden food, chips and pizza, burgers, but it was bit like cheap frozen pizza, and the cocktails sadly were pretty poor. My husbands burger was ok. This review is not sour grapes, as i say we LOVED the George last year and had recommended to friends who came this way last year also. We wont be doing that again. in this day and age, service matters, kindness matters, standards matter. To treat customers with disdain and bring nationalism into a place of business, a place where tourists come is truly disappointing. Badly done The G Bar. You let yourself down. I hope you are never in a position where someone makes you feel so uncomfortable you have to leave....

The lamb was the most tender I can remember ever having and perfectly cooked. The veggies were sufficient but left me wanting more. The roast potatoes would have benefited from pre-boiling prior to roast and both potatoes and parsnips could have used a little more fat to crisp them up if we are being pinickity. No complaints just an observation for my particular tastes.Lovely local ales were served from Loch Fine Brewery and were very moreish. Popped my head around to the garden and on this summer evening looked perfect and will definitely be getting a visit next time we are over to inverary.

The bowls were huge, filled to the brim, thick, full of smoked fish and of the most superior quaity of anywhere we go in Scotland. Nice warm crustly rolls, butter and a good coffee. I mean what more could anyone ask in life. This place is a bit of history, unchanged in years. The bar is a dream to look at, a myriad of whiskies and quaint twinkly lights. Having stumbled upon the beer garden we decided to book a room and stay the night the beer garden was a great find the atmosphere music and the fire pit were fantastic we then went to the George for a dinner reservation at five and felt rushed with the new COVID rules , our fault for booking as near last orders but I didn’t want to leave the beer garden any earlier the food was fine got the bill put in front of me half way through my main meal other people may get annoyed but these are the new COVID rules for staff and customers to adhere to , so headed back to the warmth of the fire pit for a couple of night caps , overall a great wee impromptu day under these currant circumstances.

As the title.... Food was adequate, nothing to write home about.Ordered from the early dinner/late lunch menu, steak pie, chips & veg, steak pie tasted of bisto with a tiny...tiny piece of pastry, chips where OK, veg was definitely frozen.Didn’t feel comfortable with the staff approach, were very brusque upon our arrival and when asking for the bill, think it was the manager.Ate food as quick as we could and left.Had a few drinks in the beer garden the next day not realising it was the same establishment, ambience & guy serving at the bar was much better.Would never return to restaurant however if ever in the area again.Giving 2 stars based on experience from beer garden, if had to rate restaurant it would be a zero.

At the top of the village, and looks inviting.Rather brusque (slightly rude) welcome by bar staff clearly getting frustrated with Joe public!Once seated out waitress was excellent and our basic pub grub was better than we had expected. We say in the bright and airy section to the rear which was pleasant.Covid precautions were pretty basic and if this is a worry you should go elsewhere.

Ate here two of a four night stay in Inverary, booking essential as you'll probably not get in off the cuff. The food is top notch, good ales, full of history as a location, and really good staff who coped well with our yappy dog. Reasonable prices as well given the high standard of the food

Wasnt booked and managed to get a table for the 4 of us , told 1 1/2 hrs and when they needed table back we were asked to leave after just buying a round of drinks and no bar or place to finish drinks, could be better organised if they actually took the time to realise they shouldn't be selling a round of drinks and asking to drink up in 5 mins.

We’ve eaten at The George twice during our trip to Inveraray. Once at lunchtime and dinner tonight. Both have been excellent. They are absolutely Covid aware and well prepared. Service was friendly and efficient and the food was EXCELLENT. Liver parfait and scallops for starters then duck breast and the chicken with Catalan sauce was the nicest chicken dish I’ve had for ages. Super smoky tomato and peppers tasty and moist. Will come back.

We keep returning to the George because it never fails to please. Our latest visit was Sunday night and we were please to see Covid restrictions being taken seriously with plenty of hand sanitizer available. Excellent dinner with main courses of sirloin steak and duck. Both were excellently cooked and very tasty, although i could have done without the peppercorn sauce which I thought overpowered the duck. The deserts were beautiful and a delight to the eye and to the mouth. Service was quick and polite. Well done.

We stayed in Inveraray for two nights and chose to eat here once and drink here twice. Lovely beer garden, set up well for Covid - and with good, reasonable prices. The food was also fantastic. We were both a bit tired of restaurant food so wanted a good, hearty pub meal and this didn’t disappoint. Would recommend the fish and chips - and the cola slush with a shot of Bacardí!!

NOT Covid Friendly! The biggest birthday disappointment from usually my fav restaurant. I am a massive fan of the George to the point id say it’s my favourite restaurant in Scotland. When I saw you had reopened after the lockdown for Covid I was so happy so my family visited there yesterday for my birthday lunch. We actually felt dirty eating there. There are no safety measures in place as the tables are crammed in to the point my chair was actually touching the woman’s chair behind me. That’s not social distancing - in fact it’s worse than what it was like pre covid. Also working in hospitality, we are very aware of the cleaning regulations which again were not met. Spray the tables, wait 30 seconds then wipe. A quick rub left to right with a cloth does not kill germs, just brushes crumbs away. There was no sanitiser in the bathrooms either. The food came out in less than 10 minutes therefore precooked which is all fine IF heated correctly which it was not. The steak pie was ‘warm’ rather than piping hot and the roast looked amazing but was just ok. We were very close to asking to move to a more suitable area but do not like to cause a fuss. The drinks were not chilled - ok you supply glasses with ice, but during a pandemic, forgive me if I’d rather drink direct from the product. The only good thing was the staff were pleasant that’s not changed. I sadly won’t be back to the George for some time now as I just did not feel safe.

Popped in looking to have a drink and although there was a good 8/10 free tables in rear bar we were told these were for food & directed us to an outside covered bar which to be fair may have been ok if weather was nice but it was pouring down, which was serving a limited selection of beers in plastic glasses. Gave it a miss !

We booked at reception in the afternoon for that evening ... as it looked appealing from the outside. The staff were excellent, drinks brought immediately order taken and food out with just the right time to relax and settle in. Both mains were very good well presented and hot. Shared a cheese board for afters that too was lovely. Tables well spaced although it was busy it wasn’t overcrowded. Toilets, eating area and bar all very clean. Great atmosphere ... def, recommend this establishment.

I've been a few times over the years, and have had my work's Christmas night out there before. The George is an amazing pub and restaurant. The interior is beautiful and very historic. The staff are warm and friendly. The food is braw, and they do vegan options. They have a wide selection of beverages, and they have some beautiful ales on pump. If you're ever in Inveraray, I'd definitely recommend The George.

We visited the restaurant part of the George. The food is not bad. I enjoyed the two oysters of the seafood platter on starter but when I asked if I could order just the starter, the waitress snapped at me.One young female staff (hair braided both sides) wasn’t greeted us well or even when she’s taking our orders.

The service and staff in this place is absolutely spot on! Every single detail, staff are just on it and it’s like an oiled machine. Building is characterful and has real charm but service and food/drinks are fresh and contemporary. Food was just delicious, simple well spiced and cooked meal without loads of unnecessary frills. We are staying locally and will be back before we leave.

We spend our annual romatic in Inverary and always dine at the George. This year the kitchen and bar staff were Polish and South Africans (per our waitress)My husband had grilled pork chops off the special board that was massive and awesome with a gravy sauce that was absolutely devine, pic attached. I had slow roasted ox cheek that was absolutely melt in your mouth with perfect veggies n the side. The only thing I could fault at all was the mash ith my ox cheek tht was lumpy, dry and useasoned, but had been creatively etched with a servng spon to look like the Sydney opera house- clever! All round pleasant staff, and consistentyl great food and good value for the money...always a treat to dine here!!!!

Food was fresh and tasty however on arrival didnt have a booking so front of house staff member advised could get a table for 75mins which knowing how quickly we eat was fine. However during mains was confronted by front of house to be told we shouldn't have been given menus and asked to give the name of staff member who had given us the menus (for staff retraining) which was completely unprofessional and shifting the blame from himself. Hurried finishing meal and was told the other people who had table booked were here so hurry up basically so had to finish our drinks very quickly. We left the restaurant an hour and 5 mins after we left so his overreaction and need to shift the blame to other staff was highly unnecessary and what has prompted me to write this review in the first place.

Just walked in on the off chance for lunch. It was not really clear if they were open or not and wandered down corridors to the bar. We were found a table without any problem, but it was soon busy and most appear to have booked. No evidence of one way system. Staff masked, but I don't remember there being a hand sterilising point. When busy probably struggling to keep distances.I had a Venison and Stilton burger which was very tasty. Wife ordered a macaroni cheese from snacks menu and it was huge.

Stayed one night DBB. Restaurant clean, nice and relaxing. Ordered ham hock for starters which was excellent choice, enjoyed very much. Main course ordered the duck, again delicious Dessert just couldn’t resist ordering apple and toffee crumble which did not disappoint, excellent choice again. Enjoyed every course. The waitress and waiters on the night (Sunday) were fantastic. Breakfast was plenty full and excellent choice, ordered the full Scottish and couldn’t fault it perfect. Again staff fantastic. We stayed1 night with the DBB deal and it is fantastic will definitely be back to stay.
