Fantastic slices of thick sliced beef, perfect roast potatoes and plenty of vegetables. The gravy was stunning. Highly recommend. The staff were polite and very welcoming

Great local family run pub. Lovely food at respectable prices. Service was prompt, friendly and efficient. Live music, bouncy castle for the kids and fresh cup cakes being handed out was an extra special touch. Family orientated atmosphere makes you feel at ease and enjoy all that is on offer. Not just a meal, but some great entertainment too. Very well done Gate Inn. We’ll be back again soon, and wish you all every success for the future 💙 Also… an extra special thank you to the staff who were so kind, reassuring and understanding over a minor hiccup today, with another customer, who obviously did not understand neurodiverse children. The pub staff were on top-form dealing with this, which we ‘as a family’ respect and appreciate immensely. From the heart - well done guys, sincerely 💙

Utterly beautiful pub, superb location.lovely garden .fantastic decor. In the middle of gorgeous countryside. We went for sunday lunch. Which they weren't serving...cafe menu.. like a beans. . Children running around and obviously working clearing tables with staff shirts on all good fun.. .but awful. Cafe style menu . Very loud dj in the garden .with no escaping his set.. What a waste of a really stunning pub/restaurant. .

Actually had to Leave . Been going to this place for 30 years. It was not busy but could not get a drink despite waking at the bar for 15 minutes. The landlord just ignored us and when asked for a drink just walked off . Think it’s time to find another village pub. It could be so good as it used to be.

This pub used to be rammed any weekend, especially bank holidays. It was almost empty over this bank holiday. There is a very limited menu. Mostly burgers and pre-prepared food. A couple of salads. No steaks, nothing cooked from scratch. The serving was done by children around 10 or 12 years old. The ales are Shepherd Neame, no guest beers and a limited selection. Not impressed, sorry. Won't be hurrying back.

We booked for the Valentines evening which was a 3 course meal and a bottle of Prosecco or wine for 2 people at £48.95 (we would have paid £48.95 each for what we got)! We arrived and they had set all the tables up with candles, confetti, love heart napkins.. the full works. We even got a cupcake and some chocolates with our bill. The staff were lovely, and they are dog friendly. But most importantly the food was amazing. It is not often we are impressed by food but they’ve certainly won us over. We also added 3 coke’s onto our bill which were a lot cheaper than other places we’ve been to. They appear to be a family run business as their children were around and talking to customers which was really nice. This will absolutely be our new place to go. You will not be disappointed!

Where was everybody? My wife and I have just enjoyed a lovely lunch in one of our old favourite pubs. However we were the only customers in there on a beautiful but cold day. After Chris Smith left the pub, a succession of publicans had lowered the whole atmosphere of a brilliant pub and I expect many people are saying, “Never again”. My advice would be to give it another go…I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. We had a very warm welcome from two lovely ladies who are, rightly, very proud of the pub. It was warm with a lovely log fire and comfortable seating. We ordered from the simple lunch menu and when the food came, it was excellent and the drinks were perfect. The newly refurbished toilets were immaculate and modern( they used to be pretty grim). When we came to pay the bill, we found it hard to believe what a bargain it all was. The Gate has its mojo back and all it needs is for past customers, and new, to visit and enjoy.

Have been here many times over the years and through several licensees. Unfortunately today”s experience didn’t get off to a good start. Stopped here this afternoon for drinks with the intention of sitting in the garden. There were a couple of men sitting at a table just inside the door and a large party sitting eating off to one side but otherwise the pub was quiet. We waited, and waited, and waited, and waited at the bar in the cain hope somebody would appear but unfortunately not. A young girl walked right past us and could clearly see we were waiting for service and went into the kitchen and we assumed she would either come back or tell someone else. We could see her but she ignored us totally. We waited 5 mins at an empty bar like lemons! A couple of men from the table joined us but gave up and sat down. We too gave up and walked out. Please sort your staffing out or put a bell on the bar if you can’t be bothered to stand behind it!

I went today to hear a band who were playing in the garden. We had all agreed to have some lunch. The menu was only for people in the garden and it was very limited and unimaginative. I chose a chicken burger and chips. The burger covered only half of the roll and sat on one questionable lettuce leaf from a cheap round lettuce. That was it! With a portion of non appealing looking chips. This cost me £10. It should have been half that! From having a lovely time with the music and atmosphere, the meal was a complete let down. It spoilt it really.

I have been to the Gate twice in recent weeks. The first time I was concerned at the filthy door and handle leading to the gents facilities there is no alternative other than to touch it to gain access. Furthermore there was no soap in the dispenser and none available, this brings with it obvious and unacceptable consequences. I then assumed it was a temporary issue and one which would be addressed. I returned for lunch last Saturday. Same situation with the filthy door and handle and still no soap! Beyond the lack of basic hygiene in the cloakroom, I was given a warm and wet glass for my cold beer and the cutlery was stained, I had no confidence that it was hygienic. I am surprised that the brewers controlling this business allow such poor practice, particularly given that Covid continues to flourish. I suspect the "virus" would, if it could, offer this establishment top marks but I do not.

Nice setting, nice decor inside and pleasant service. I had been looking forward to visiting here for a while as I often pass it going to Grove Ferry. Unfortunately, the food I had was enough to put me off. Overpriced food in general and mine was extremely overpriced at £17 for pork belly which was cold, placed in cold sauce with some cold (small) potato with black pudding inside. A couple of shallots were also on the plate. I looked in disbelief! Is this actually the extent of the meal for £17?! I hoped that a bowl of veg might follow but nothing did. As I was really hungry I ate what little food there was in less than 5 minutes, in about 3 mouthfuls. None of it was enjoyable to eat. My partner was still eating his meal for a good 10 minutes after I had eaten mine. By the time the waitress came to ask “how was your meal?” it was too embarrassing to say that it was the worst meal I have ever eaten in any restaurant or pub -(considering I had begrudgingly eaten it through being so hungry). I didn’t want to cause a scene as the waitress was nice. Unfortunately, this experience will put me off coming back. I had to go to McDonald’s after leaving the pub as I was still so hungry and this is the first time I have had to do that after going to eat out. What a shame.

Visited on Father’s Day for a Sunday roast. The service was brilliant and very prompt even though we were placed in the restaurant part at the back of the pub. We were seated as soon as we turned up and were seated in a gorgeous place and socially distanced from other members of the public. When drinks were ordered, they were delivered promptly but still allowing us enough time to decide on our meals. On all meals, kids portions were available which was great for the little ones. Once food was ordered, we did not have to wait long and the meal was delivered. All was cooked to perfection. Vegetables were spot on. Staff arrived at the right time to collect plates and ask how the meal was. Upon ordering desert, we were made aware that they were short staffed which was not noticeable as they had it all under control and was a nice calm environment. Once our meal was all finished, we went out into the garden area to meet the animals. They have rabbits and ducks which are really friendly The visit was 10/10, and I would highly recommend to anyone! I will definitely visit again soon! Staff are lovely!

Waitress/waiter service was second to non - nothing was too much trouble. Drinks ordered and delivered in a timely manner with a smile. Food was beautifully presented, cooked to perfection. We were checked by the staff to see all was okay. We sat in the garden and the new addition of the ducks was an absolute pleasure. The antics of them kept us very amused! We also noticed that there were far fewer mosquitos about which have in the passed practically drained us all. The ducks eat the larvae in the water so far few blood sucking critters which is a true blessing! Most entertaining evening for a long time. Thank you all once again.

Ceaser salad still with the muddy lettuce root in the bowl, two inch square crudites, half an anchovy and tough rubbery chicken - awful. Then there was the " pay me now" system. I understand if you have had people running off without paying, but we look like normal people not young tearaways, but even so, why not ask for a credit card swipe and start a tab and not have to keep paying for everything everytime you want another drink etc.AND the flies, you need to keep the duck food down by the other end of the garden so they are not pooping everywhere encouraging flys to settle and annoy the customers.I know times have been hard and you want to encourage business, but you need to up the quality, improve the service, sort out the flies and take a fresh look at how your collect the money.

We only order fish & chips x 2 and a burger! This was after chasing to find out where it was. The food was mediocre and definitely not worth waiting an hour and a half for. When we ordered dessert they refused to give us a discount for the extraordinarily long wait. The cutlery was dirty and no serviettes came with the dessert. Visited on Saturday with my family and was extremely disappointed. I waited a day before writing as I did not want the emotion of the moment to unduly influence this review, particularly given how hard the hospitality industry has been hit recently, having reflected, these are all things that could so easily be avoided. Whilst the bar man and waitress were very courteous, the lady manager who could have been setting an example seemed to think it was acceptable to use the ‘f’ word in every sentence, the fact that she has such a loud voice made it even worse. I was visiting with my children and it was totally unecessary not to say embarrassing. Moving on, the cutlery was absolutely filthy and with my nail, I was able to scrape off muck from my knife and fork, at best they had had a cursory rinse. The waitress informed us there were no specials that were still advertised on the board (this was 6pm) and several items on the menu were unavailable either. No mussels, no peppercorn sauce for the steak and at first I was told that the chef could not do onions with the steak, something that fortunately they decided to do in the end. The food was ok, the sirloin steak was a bit tough and whilst I asked for it medium rare, it came well done. All in all a very poor experience but things that a little care and attention could have put right but the lady manager’s language was inexcusable in a family setting. I have been visiting this pub for over 30 years and unless things change, will take up the excellent other options in Fordwich, St Nicholas, Stodmarsh and Ickham in future. Such a shame.

We visited today with 2 friends. Firstly I reserved a specific table which we didn’t get and had to wait ages for our food. When it arrived the roast potatoes were soggy and our friend sent them back. She did receive more but again, soggy. Her Yorkshire pudding which should have been light, risen and fluffy resembled a trodden on cold pancake! This meal was removed from the bill but altogether poor. Would not return for a roast. We were informed that had we eaten earlier, the potatoes would have been ok. No social distancing in the beer garden either where a live band was playing.

Booked a table for a late lunch 1.30 thinking it would be a quiet time. It was very busy when we arrived. Only one member of staff was looking after the garden where we were and we waited an hour and a quarter for our food. We were literally going to leave when the food arrived just in time. Vegan options were very good and all the food was really lovely with generous portions too. The pork belly my husband had was massive! They need to have more staff especially during Rishies Dishies - eat out to help out - which has attracted more people, plus it is peak holiday season. Nevertheless we had a lovely time and will definitely be going back.

Went here for lunch the other day. Happy at number of vegan/vegetarian options as I was with people who had these dietary requirements. Friendly staff, but not enough for the number of people who were there. We waited for over an hour to get our food, so when it finally came I was starving. Glad this place doesn't skimp on portion sizing, because otherwise I would have been really disappointed after the wait. I am delighted to say that my food was absolutely delicious, but I'm not sure if I will be returning due to the slow service.

If you like your meat and veg overcooked this is NOT the place for you!My wife and I have eaten 5 roast beef Sunday lunches on the trot. The beef is cooked to perfection on the medium rare side and the veg is not over cooked.Portion size is generous and we have never left a thing on our plates and no need for us to have a starter or pudding. The staff are very friendly and super efficient, no waiting for drinks and table service in the garden. What's not to like? 10 out 10 in my book! Gorgeous country pub with excellent food and service! The staff were so friendly, helpful, polite and efficient. Nothing was too much bother for them, and they went out of their way to accommodate us even though we didn't have a booking. We had a fabulous lunch in a beautiful setting with excellent service from all the staff. This place is well worth a visit, and we would highly recommend it! Thank you!

The Gate Inn is a fabulous country pub. The staff are super attentive and friendly but not intrusive. Lovely beer garden, with plenty of seating and parasols, they even have some cute ducks wandering freely. Lots of different menu options... we both had sirloin steak with all the trimmings and choice of peppercorn or Diane sauce, cooked to perfection (med/rare), delicious, so so good, followed by yummy sticky toffee pudding. Abiding to guidelines, hand sanitisers dotted about... all felt like a safe environment.Highly recommend The Gate Inn.

I love going to this pub - it is your typical country pub with a nice spacious garden. The pub itself has the pub bar area with some tables in & then there is the restaurant area too. The landlady Alice is so welcoming along with her team who are all friendly & are all working incredibly hard in the current climate. I brought my friends here a few weeks ago for dinner & everyone loved their food. The staff checked on us to see how our food was and were polite and friendly. I had Camembert to start and the fish cake salad for my pain. It was amazing & the portion was so generous - I was stuffed! Definitely recommend - thank you!

I have been coming to this pub for many years! The staff always have a warm welcome smile as you enter the door. With everything that has been going on and the whole eat out scheme I can safely say Alice and her team are doing the very best they can and are doing it smashingly. Yes you may have to wait for you food but it’s worth the wait, what do people expect if they haven’t booked or are a big family, cooking amazing food doesn’t come in 10 to 15 minutes it takes time. With the whole eat out scheme I think people need to be a bit more patient, especially if you haven’t booked at table and they squeeze you in, you can’t expect a miracle and it’s not like they didn’t warn you before you sat down... All I can say is I think this pub has its spark back and will be going back there time and time again. A well done and a massive thank you to Alice and her team. Xx

I’ve been coming to this pub since a child (I’m now 28) I can honestly say I’ve never had a problem with the food, staff are always as helpful as they can be with any changes needed. If there has ever been a wait due to how busy they are, the staff are more than apologetic. On a Wednesday we have taken part in their quiz night that has always been such a laugh and last Saturday of the month the music quiz is also great fun. My partner and I met at this pub and love it so much we have now booked our wedding here and can’t wait. Highly recommend this little country gem be it for a quick passing drink, mid week lunch or even a Sunday Roast. Alice and her team work very hard to make sure everything is done to a high standard, they have coped brilliantly with the new rules and regulations and hand on heart I can say we feel safely distanced in the pub. This place is a must try..!!

This pub used to have the best menu - wholesome real homecooked food, simply - but hearty. Now sadly it is frozen soggy chips, bare burgers and sad salads. 2 of the dishes i would like to have ordered (both that would have required actual cooking) were off that day - so I had a ploughmans. A couple of slabs of boring supermarket cheddar and a nub of brie, salad that had been scraped out of a bag (wilted and soggy), 2 halves of a cherry tomato, a very large pickled onion and a fairly large baguette. Husband's vege burger (£12) was out of the cheap section from iceland, just that - in a bun with nothing else - chips that were beyond thier best (and not very many) the literal end of the lettuce, the actual stalk and a tiny pot of coleslaw. FiL fish & chips did fair better and at least looked a decent size.Just such a shame - I am guessing they do not have a chef at the moment and are just getting by in the kitchen - but I was sad to see the food had gone down hill as much as it had.The pub itself and the garden are gorgeous - I would go back for a drink, but not to eat

Stale, dull chips that had been pre-salted (we prefer to never add salt); a portion of coleslaw little bigger than a 10 pence piece (in its own dish!); a small scraping of wilted salad garnish; an over-sweet burger bun. But the home-made burger patty was good if under-seasoned. I just don't understand how 'The Gate' can charge so much (£13 I think it was) for something so underwhelming. Eating out should be special; this wasn't.

We have been coming to the gate for a long time now and seen it go from an amazing pub to a not so good pub,However in the last year it’s has been restored to its former glory. Our food was amazing and the service was exceptional. The only fault I could find in the place was that the restaurant was a tad chilly. We will be back soon :)

The Gate is back how it used to be - a warm welcome, cosy atmosphere and food to die for. Sunday lunch recently was delicious - the rack of lamb was perfect and the lamb tagine was just amazing. Congratulations to Alice and her lovely team for bringing the old girl back to life!

Went to the Gate Inn today for lunch, fire was alight and a friendly welcome when we walked through the door. A good choice of wine and the menu is plentiful with a specials board also available. Communal tables which give a friendly local vibe and the second time I’ve eaten here the food was exactly what you would want from a local country pub. The lovely girl behind the bar asked me to leave a review for the pub which i was happy to do and I can see they are very passionate about rebuilding the reputation of this love country pub. defiantly worth the drive and a visit.

Went to The Gate Inn today, Saturday, for lunch, have had this pub on the list for a while and was really looking forward to going there. First disappointment, the ales served were limited, our next impression was the pub looked tired and a bit unkempt! There were only 6 customers in the bar and the restaurant was empty, this was 2 pm. We decided to sit at the large table near the open fire, there were crumbs on the table and it needed to be wiped. There were several pictures on the wall and I had to resist straightening many of them, coupled with that there was a mirror which was smeared totally and needed to be cleaned. That said we were pretty boring with our order for lunch and both chose lasagne with garlic bread, need to mention here that the menus were scruffy and stained and could do with redoing, not difficult as not fancy just a heavy duty A4 paper backed. Both our lasagnes were dry and the 3 small pieces of garlic bread were just short of overdone, with an apology for a salad. This pub could be fantastic , the location means it has to be sought out, so reputation is a must. In summer they have a lovely garden by the river but need to try harder to entice customers back. Need to say here the staff were very good and attentive. Could provide a few treats for dogs. Will go there again in the summer to just try it again.

The Beaney Cafe is spacious with high ceilings and probably a good place to meet with friends if you are a little bit unsure about meeting in a public place at the moment. The Earl Grey Cake was absolutely delicious and the staff, as always, are very obliging and friendly. Definitely recommend this as a place to meet with friends during this Coronovirus situation, as long as they stay open!

Had a nice bacon baguette really nice good price but feel ripped of paying £3 for supposed American pancakes turns out they are mini ones with syrup, kind of feel I got ripped of there.

Nice ambience and friendly staff. Bagels..... But little else on offer. That said my crushed avocado 🥑 and smoked salmon was spot on. It just needs a menu that offers more variety..... Quiches, Homemade Soups would be great additions. Located in The Old Town Hall. Fully Licensed and Coffee/Cake for afters.
