The Gate in Three Rivers

I visited the Gate with my daughter for Sunday roast. I had the beef and my daughter the lamb. It was honestly one of the best roasts I have had in a long time. The service was really good and friendly and very efficient. I would highly recommend and will be back. Thank you ‘The Gate’.

Very welcoming staff, checked to make we’d registered our cars. Service was very good throughout our time there, Megan, our waitress, was excellent. The lunch menu was good, several of us had the gammon and chips, the gammon was very nice but the chips were over cooked, but still edible. Only one ale, Doombar, and only one zero beer, Peroni, were on offer, but several keg beers. Overall a very pleasant lunchtime and we will probably be back.

Disappointing this time for the chips and soup were cold, so were sent back. Also no gluten free bread again. The chef didn't remind the waitress that he had put vegan cheese in the soup, so she couldn't inform me.

Great food, and environment, but incredibly slow service, both for food and especially drinks. More bar staff required.

Lovely and friendly staff. Had a Sunday roast, whilst portions are a good size, the food was just luke warm, no proper vegetables with the roast, but a small portion of shredded greens. The butternut squash Wellington is Not a Wellington! More like a a veg stew in a pie, no taste to it and the vegetables were rather soggy. Needed to be reduced down with some seasoning before putting in the pastry. Rather disappointing. Really busy so the service was very slow.

We came off the motorway for lunch on our travels and liked the look of The Gate. Parking is plentiful and easy. We had liver and scallops to start, and chicken and mixed roast mains, which seemed perfect for Sunday lunch. It was the best roast that we have had this year so far. All of the food was tasty and there was plenty of it. We were looked after very well by Scarlett, who does her work with a nice genuine smile. It was quite busy, we had arrived early and I think we were lucky to get a table as we had no booking.

Amazing service from an outstanding team. Food and setting were lovely and a very relaxing time had by us. It’s years since I have been to The Gate and will be back soon.

I recently visited the Gate for dinner and enjoyed a delicious chicken burger. The staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient, in particular our waitress Ella. I would be keen to return when I am next in Chorleywood!

I had a really lovely vegan burger and was reminded just how much vegan meat alternatives have improved. We were served by Ella who took great care of us.

Unfortunately this time my dining experience and meal were not as good as previous times we have been. I really wanted the seabass but they had run out so I went for a burger and the bun was rock hard. I was asked how my food was but I hadn't had a bite at the time I was asked so couldn't feed this back in person. I did say I hadn't started eating yet but no one came back to check after. We were put on a table for two, given the option of two tables for two, whereas another couple that came in after us were given the option of two tables both seating for four people, much nicer tables. I found this strange as there was another table for two available? Felt like certain people were getting preferential treatment? We were not asked if we wanted any water for our table, while others were (I note this is a question that is expected to be asked to all customers looking at the notes on the till). The staff were very good apart from that and so was the rest of the food excluding the bun on the burger. I wouldn't usually mention stuff like this but you asked for a review..sorry. :(

Mum and I visited for lunch on May Bank Holiday Monday and were looked after by the charming Jamie, Mum enjoyed her usual fish and chips and I tried the pork belly with dauphinois potato. My dish was perfectly cooked with all the fat rendered and crispy crackling. I will order this again as tricky and time consuming to get right at home, The restaurant was full and the atmosphere was fun and lively.

Would definitely recommend. My Friends and I had the most delicious meal here. Food was amazing, served piping hot and we all really enjoyed. Prawns to start were awesome. And my Buttermilk chicken burger was really yummy. Will definitely be going back.Great menu offer.

A fantastic roast by Sam and Karol. Lovely atmosphere and great food. All of the food was delicious and well cooked will definitely come back.

Good sized restaurant / bar with plenty of seating both inside and out. The staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive throughout our visit. The food quality was high, portion sizes large and prices reasonable given the quality. The wine list was varied and priced fairly. With plenty of free on site parking, we will definitely be back.

Another enjoyable lunch with my Mum at The Gate. Service is so kind and attentive and the atmosphere is warm and lively. Mum’s fish and chips was as good as usual but I’m not a fan of the new accompaniments to the steak dishes. Bring back the watercress and onion rosti and ditch the slimy exotic’ mushrooms please.

Lovely food, atmosphere buzzy and comfortable. Extra shout out for our waitress, Izzy. She was so helpful in both menu assistance and our 6 year old well behaved guest. We all praised her cheerfulness and efficiency, a great ambassador for your company.

Four of us went for an evening meal staff were great as was the food the waitress that served us was very pleasant and could not do enough to help us her name was rayna well done

I was pleased to have chosen The Gate.for a special Sunday lunch with old friends who had traveled a long way to visit my elderly Mum. The atmosphere is great and the service is very professional. We had a great meal. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food. The roast is very well executed and the ribeye steak is top notch.

The food here is very nice! We shared some starters and a pizza and everyone was happy. Does get busy so I would recommend booking.

I've now visited this pub for dinner three times since Dec 2023 with both friends and family. On all occasions we've sat in the bar area as I had my dog and the food has been excellent including the Sunday roast. Service was good, special shout to Katie who looked after us yesterday. On one occasion the tables were a bit sticky and could have been cleaned better. Lovely outdoor space with heaters. Will return

Lovely visit to The Gate Post-Covid restrictions. We were served by Amy who was an absolute delight, the food was great and the service prompt. Will definitely be back!

What has happened to this pub?! A ridiculous interpretation of the regulations, which is just downright unpleasant! Had to book 10 days in advance just to have a drink. Had to sit in the restaurant to have a drink because they don’t do tables of 5 in the bar because they can’t move the furniture around - I mean really?! The service was appalling! Waited 20 minutes to be served our first drink and then had to go begging for the next one. We live a few meters from the The Gate but would rather walk 15 minutes in the rain to the The Black Horse! They are relaxed, compliant and welcoming.

Frozen food, average presentation, abysmal service and management do not seem to care. We will NEVER return here ever again and I advise everyone else to AVOID this want to be ‘premium’ Gastropub. Appearances can be deceiving. Although this pub looks very nice and upmarket it is just another average frozen food eatery managed by people that are just there because. The so called general manager just brushed off our issues with a don’t care attitude. Appalling behaviour, especially in such an upmarket Hugh selling area. Keep your money and spend it at a better venue.

I visited earlier this year. The service was friendly, the food reasonable. A typical gastro pub in terms of atmosphere.

surprisingly good food, didnt expect it to be bad but was very happy with all 3 courses. deals on prosecco too for thursdays and fridays what more could you want?

Went for dinner this evening with my daughter and a friend and her daughter. Didn't realise you need to register your car at the bar within 15 minutes otherwise you'll get a £40 parking ticket and only realised this when I went to order my food and was informed of the car registration process by a rather churly girl behind the bar who's response was 'there's signs everywhere' When the food arrived after waiting 40 minutes it was cold and there was a grand total of 12 chips on my plate. My friend ordered the vegan cauliflower curry which consisted of 3 florets of curry in a yellow sauce with a sad looking salad. Portions very poor, very overpriced and would NOT recommend dining here at all.

Visited here on a sunny day, the exterior and interior both are so modern, bright and clean. The staff are very accommodating and very friendly. The food was delicious as well. I particularly enjoyed the tempura mushrooms and my favourite, the golden chocolate bomb for dessert. I will be telling all my friends and will be coming back soon :)

When we moved to Rickmansworth, this was our favourite restaurant in the area. We went here last week and whilst the food was good, the portion sizes were ridiculously small. I had squid to start and there were about 5 pieces. I had duck salad for the main course and this was equally disappointing and I had the equivalent of a tablespoon of duck and the rest was salad. The waiter was really miserable and bordering on rude and if he had asked us whether we were happy with our meal at any point, we would have told him what we thought. Very disappointing and we won't be returning.

Nice local pub and restaurant and very good value.Ladies lunching, family's/couple dining with a nice pub scene. Good car park and garden.

We booked at The Gate for a Sunday dinner. Table was for 4 and we were celebrating a Birthday with Family. It is not that often we all get together so we selected The Gate as it is local and we have been plenty of times before.The past 2 times i have been i have noticed that the food is consistent but the service is getting worse and this time felt strong enough about it to write on trip advisor.For a sunday night the restaurant was quiet and i counted only about 24 people eating and 2 waitress on the floor throughout. The drinks we ordered seemed to take forever to come and our starters of tuna carpaccio took easily 25-30 minutes to arrive.Once we had finished it took a further 15 minutes to get a waitress to come over and clear the starters. We decided to order more drinks at this time which did not arrive for a further 15 -20 minuites along with our main course. At this time i was so hungry that i could of eaten the table.my partner had the duck and waffle which was ok but the actual waffle was like cardboard? I has the Wagu burger which was ok but I'm sure its is low grade Wagu beef because it just tasted like a normal burger? After we were finished the waitress eventually came back and cleared away the main course. We decided just to order a round of coffees as we honestly could not be bothered to wait for any desserts we might of ordered.I have been here a number of times over the years and i truly hope the Management sort out the staffing issue or do some training with the staff. What was once a great venue has gone down hill massively.I am sure we will be back but we will probably find another venue to celebrate our family birthdays in the future.Oh and might want to take the easter promotional cards off the table? Easter is long gone.

We have just returned from the Gate (14 Jan) and were so unhappy that I had to write the review straight away to warn others.My partner asked me to meet him at the bar today after work, thought we would try somewhere new. He had been waiting for a table for about half an hour and, I joined him and we both had a couple of drinks and patiently waited for a table to become free. Luckily, a table just became free about 45 minutes later and as I went to secure the table, then the guy behind the bar (blonde beard) rudely came over to us and told us that he had secured the table for another couple. I asked where it mentioned that a bar table can be reserved, he said it wasn't reserved and laughed saying, he decided to hold it for the couple! We were told to leave the table and another couple from the bar that we had not notice arrive before were suddenly given the table!We found it very offensive and could only think that it was a racist gesture. I will be looking to take this matter further! We are regulars at many of the local places there and have never experienced such rudeness.Disgusted with this experience and needless to say we won't be going back. Ruined our evening and left us very disheartened!

Over the years we have been here countless times and in the main it has always been quite good. This time it was just about ok, but you wouldn't rush back.Upon our arrival we were greeted by an enthusiastic young man and seated at our table. This chap was the only one who had any experience at all, the remainder of the staff were all there for the first time, (or at least that was how it appeared) and simple questions about the food led to looks of panic in peoples eyes! The original man being the only one who could open a bottle of wine!Food was just about ok, burger 8/10, steak 4/10, duck salad 5/10, chips cold. First choice of puddings and main courses were all gone..........pudding Crème Brule 2/10. Wine list very good, service frightened but present, room far too hot and seats too small for a fat bloke. Training and sparkle required.

Haven't been here for a while & now I remember why.We have been waiting 45 mins for our meal & it's still not here.I feel it's unacceptably slow. We won't be returning here..
