The Gate in St Albans

Food was great as always, the sharing platters were a great choice for us. Front of house very attentive and friendly. Made it a great experience and we all had good fun.

Held my daughter's birthday party here in the Garden Marquee, Ben and the team couldn't have be more helpful and accommodating. The weather was kind to us so it really was a lovely setting and a great night was had by all.

Same old menu, BORING. There are no special menus today. Sharing platter, very disappointing, over cooked Calamari, burnt garlic and cheese bread, over cooked Baji. The garden is very disappointing. Dirty and unkempt. Tables not cleared, dirty ashtrays not emptied, rubbish in the garden and on tables. Could do so much better.

Great pub very friendly had few beers didn’t try the food but glanced at menu looked really nice especially Sunday lunch And they have an outstanding beer garde twice as most I’ve been in just a good pub liked it thereby and must mention staff Kelly and gary

I came in yesterday with some friends in the area before flying home today, the pub had a great atmosphere, some nice ipa I’ve never had before and really good food. The service given by Ellie and Tiarnan was amazing. Despite being clearly busy they made us feel welcome attend to all our needs and Ellie made me feel very comfortable as she was so easy to chat with. If I wasn’t going back home today I’d definitely come back

I came in yesterday for the first time in a long time after having a bad experience with a previous member of staff. But I was greeted by a Tiarnan and seated quickly. He was attentive and took his time to explain the changes since I’d last visited. The service was wonderful the food outstanding and I left the pub holding it in much higher regard. I will definitely be returning soon.

We are now bored by the menu. It hasn't really changed since it was taken over by Ben and the team. I appreciate that they now have a small special menu, but it is all a bit samey, samey. That said, the food that is served is of excellent quality, and the service is always very good. We used to go once a week, but since we have had everything on the menu, several times, we now o ly go every couple of months. This is a shame because I like to support local businesses .

We found this lovely pub when looking for somewhere to hold my dad’s wake! So glad we found it, as Ben and all his team are fantastic, very helpful. Nothing was a problem. Service and food were great - 1 st class!! We are not local but have been in to have lunch a few times and always had a great experience service and food always so good. Went for Saturday lunch. The menu was nice and the food was excellent. The service was lovely. Disappointingly, the ladies' toilets let them down. There are only 2 toilets, which is not a problem, in one toilet the lock is broken, so you can't lock the door. In the other toilet, the flush is broken. Toilets were also not very clean.

Great food and service, quite busy but a good local atmosphere. Walking distance of a premier inn. Looking forward to our next visit.

We come here every day to eat while we are away for work. The food is INCREDIBLE. I am a huge foodie so I don't say that lightly. Best cheesecake I've ever had also. The service is fabulous and the chefs are so talented and make most things from scratch. They are so friendly also. Come here

I took my son and a friend to the gate today , first time for a few years and we was greeted by a very nice young man behind the bar who’s personality and confidence , I wondered very quickly is he the manger at he’s young age , but at the same time I could believe it , he won me over straight away ! And he’s staff ! We had a lovely meal , and the calamari I had for starters I can’t remember if iv had better , and I told him and the lovely young girl behind the bar so . They were so pleased and they went and told chef straight away ! My point is personally a big part of dining out is not just the food, but the service and there personalities. I left there thinking I had great food but also was blown away by the young people that were running it! They were impressive in every way! All the best, you deserve it ! 👍

i live down the road from this pub and spend a lot of time here with family and with friends. absolutely my go to spot for everything from a couple of drinks to dinner with friends. the staff are so lovely and treat you like family. the chefs are wonderful at accommodating for fussy eaters like myself. the food is always amazing, fresh tasty and beautifully presented. this pub is always full of life and is absolutely somewhere i’d recommend to anyone.

Thursday night so almost the weekend and almost October. So a good excuse to enjoy The Gate pub and their amazing Gate Burger served with kale slaw and sweet potato fries washed down with well kept real ale. We also had the Chicken Supreme with so tasty mushroom sauce and sides. Plum Crumble & custard to finish the evening. Evan looked after us amazingly. Lovely highly recommended village pub with good summer garden.

Until now, We have always been disappointed with this pub , however after reading the reviews on here we just had to give it another try as it’s our local!! The gardens have been cleaned up and new furniture, looks like a really nice experience to eat outside. On entering .. the pub didn’t smell of (urine?) this was my biggest delight of all. And the tables were not sticky . There was a nice girl behind the bar but a little inexperienced I think , pleasant tho! Food was great!! I’m so pleased we have somewhere local that’s a pleasure to visit. At last. Well done !!

Best Sunday Roast lunch we have ever had. The beer and wine complemented the food. Staff helpful, attentive, cheerful and well organised. Great manager Evan and team.

Keep meaning to review, I absolutely love coming to The Gate for brunch, the staff are always friendly and the food freshly cooked and delicious. I have been a number of times for brunch and lunch, never disappointed. I am visiting again on the 24th July for lunch and very much looking foward to it.

Love that they now have specials. Had the mushroom soup (special) a d the smoked salmon to start, both lovely. Followed by the fish finger burger and the mussels (special) . Again, really lovely. Went for brunch with a friend last Saturday, after a long walk. Fantastic brunch menu and it was even better than expected when it arrived. The manager was great; he had a good sense of humour, a great attitude and made us feel very welcome indeed. Highly recommended.

Visited with my husband, Dad and his partner for Fathers Day. Booked ahead and glad i did because it was a warm day and the garden tables were packed! It was so nice to see a local pub busy. For the food we had the gate sharing platter, glastonbury rarebit, and the pea and onion bhajis. For mains my husband and i shared the BBQ chicken pizza, my dad and his girlfriend went for haddock and chips and the garden club pizza. We couldnt help but have some dessert too so my dads girlfriend and i had the chocolate sundae and my husband had the sticky toffee pudding. All lovely food and very enjoyable. Great beer too my dad and husband had the beavertown. Staff were great and friendly. Only downside was the toilets, these were not the cleanest. Especially the ladies the floors were dirty and in one of the toilets there was sick all inside the toilet it was not the best at all. This was reported to staff. Aside from that id like to say we will be back!
