The service from start to finish was flawless and so welcoming, every request was taken care of and every question was answered. The vibes of the restaurant are so warm, homely and welcoming, it felt in the best way like I had been invited to their home for a lovely meal. And the food, it was absolutely impeccable, perfect flavours and textures throughout. Each flavour in each dish perfectly complemented each other, I could not fault anything at all. This is genuinely the best place I have eaten, everything was perfect, it really made my and my partners anniversary the best ever and I can’t wait to come back to Edinburgh solely for the purpose of dining here again.

Great meal to finish out our trip to Scotland! Service was very attentive, timing was relaxed but it never felt like we were waiting between course. The food was amazing. Layered flavors a well balance plan and perfectly sized portions left us all contemplating what we had known about food.

Even though the location is lovely and the staff incredibly helpful, the food is disappointing predictable and at times just plain bland. The small portions meant we left hungry and ended up eating dinner again an hour later.

While the staff couldn’t have been nicer, the exorbitant fee (55 pounds per person) didn’t match up to the insanely small portions served. Don’t come hungry, otherwise you’ll leave hungry. Better yet, skip this altogether and save your money.

After eating here many times over the years, we certainly won’t return. You don’t expect to be charged an extra £20 as the tasting menu price had increased since the time of my booking. I queried this at the end of the evening but the manageress was insistent they had done nothing wrong and prices fluctuated. I then put a complaint in writing and had to call them after three weeks as I hadn’t received any acknowledgement. The manageress knew instantly what I was calling about but told me there was nothing they could do and they were “trying to run a restaurant.” Several emails later it was stalemate. Appalling customer service, no empathy or ability to solve a complaint in other ways. I would’ve been happy with some sort of gesture, eg coffee on the house next time you’re passing. They have no appreciation of how people matter, customers matter and reputation matters. The Gardener’s Cottage? Never again!

We were aware when we booked that we would be sharing a long table with others, however we didn't expect to have loud Americans and be squashed in. They don't really cater for GF bread was toasted Genius bread, and the pastry nearly broke your teeth. The food was lively, the staff were attentive, but it all seemed rushed. They seemed to run out of drinks very quickly. The long table seating needs to be looked at, as we ended up squashed between 6 other guests, who were American and very loud. The room could easily have 5 tables for 2 in there instead of medieval eating arrangements. Also change the Europop that was very loud and didn't fit with the ambience I think they wanted. I doubt we would come back simply due to the lack of ability to produce decent GF alternatives and the seating arrangements.

A nice small restaurant that was converted from a historical cottage. Food and environment are all down to the earth and natural. There are couple long tables for share booking , so you may be seated with someone you never known unless you have a group of 6 or more. A full course of dinner offers every night. The restaurant has the up-to-date menu online, they will give you an alternative if you are somehow allergic to some food items on the menu. Overall, the food is good but tends to be salty. Dessert has a limited choice. Service is great .

The portions are extremely small, you don't really get full. And the menu is set up in such a way that it consists of several courses – but bread and butter, as well as the tiny amuse-bouche, each count as a course. These items are always included and never part of the menu at these prices in other restaurants. We often dine in finer establishments and are accustomed to fine dining experiences. At Gardeners Cottage, there is a need for significant optimization as this greatly disappoints guests – as seen in many other reviews across all platforms. The value for money is not at all justified. Additionally, the prices at Gardeners Cottage are not transparent enough and simply set too high. Even if the menu is sold for 40 pounds, the drink prices are excessively high – 17 pounds for two glasses of beer? And then a 12% service charge on top? No thank you, better to book elsewhere – despite the genuinely friendly service and staff.

Very disappointed. Had the fixe prix menu of 5 courses. Three of the courses were outstanding (cod, venison and dessert), but two lacked flavor and freshness (crab especially). We had the wine pairing, which completely missed the mark. In fact the wine was contradictory to two of the courses. Overpriced much better food and value at Roux brothers in London. Tiny but excellent crab tartlet but only a canapé. Sourdough needed the flavoured butter. Good cod and venison with good matched wines. However the pastry cranachan tart seemed to have been made with bought in pastry shell made with lard. Rock solid. Not the standard for a restaurant charging £350 for a menu including an extra 1 cheese course between two. Once only visit. Better value and food to be found elsewhere for this price even for a special occasion. Liked the bench eating. Other diners good company but also thought overpriced. Growing something other than weeds (willow herb past it's best for making tea ie seed heads which gardeners all hate) in the raised beds at the entrance makes a mockery of the title Gardeners Cottage!!

Honestly not worth the price. The food was well executed, but the portions were small given the price and number of courses. It was really the head of the front of house that drives the 2 stars. She made us feel like an inconvenience from the moment we walked in, and by the end we couldn't wait to leave. It wasn't only directed at us though, she spoke rudely to the chefs and other front of house staff as well, which really ruined the atmosphere. Also, the entire restaurant is communal tables, so seating is very close together. For the price I would certainly want a more intimate dining experience. So many amazing places to eat in Edinburgh...go elsewhere!

We were visiting from the states and had an opportunity to enjoy dinner on a Friday night. No expectations other than the listing in the Michelen guide. The menu was a 5 course offering that had the added wine pairings. There was a small faux pas with the first wine delivery, but other than that the meal was excellent. The bread was served with a tasty strawberry butter that was a great start. We also enjoyed a crab tart, cod over crab bisque and carrots, venison that was incredibly tender and flavorful, and a dessert tart that included a berry assortment. We were fortunate to be seated next to two couples that shared conversation to make the meal even more enjoyable. Highly recommended. The price was commensurate with a starred restaurant but worth the price. Many thanks to the staff for an nice dinner experience.

I really wanted to love this restaurant but it was just not a great experience. Our reservation was for 8pm and we weren’t served until 8:50pm. Unfortunately, not only did we wait almost an hour to get the first course, but we didn’t even get the first course - they skipped it and gave us the second course. Once they took that one away, I told them we never received the first course. The couple next to us also said they never received the first course, except that they were already done with their meal so there was a lot of back and forth with how to correct this mistake. Each course took so long to get and was just not very good. The one cracker for the second course was just really silly. Nothing really tasted amazing and every course took so incredibly long to get. The entire process was exhausting. The kitchen was getting cleaned before we even received our dessert. The chef was scrubbing the counters and they were sweeping the floors and we were the last ones sitting there waiting for dessert. I wanted to just leave…it was so awkward. We were finally served dessert at 10:30pm. Our reservation was for 8pm and we finally left at almost 11 pm. I don’t know if this was just an off night or if this is the appeal of this place but it just wasn’t for me.

I went from dreaming about going back to this restaurant and feeling excited to bring my husband here to being so disappointed and disillusioned. I really wish we could get a refund. The price did not match the quality. My fish was dry, the “second course” was a cracker (advertised as a tart) with some fish and mayonnaise and chives, the main course was not well prepared, incredibly lacking in finesse for spending 85 pound and finally the dessert lacked any creativity or finesse as well. It was not worth what they asked for…to be honest, I wasn’t sure about going there after they increased the price to 85 pound after I booked but I had to pay 20 pound per person to even book and that was not refundable otherwise I would have changed directions. The first time I came, I got 8 courses, they were unique and interesting and good portion sizes. I loved it. I’m sooooo sad this is what has become. I was hopeful it could be good but it’s not. The saving Grace with the manager who was understanding and listened to our issues. I wish we had spent our evening somewhere else for MUCH less money. We have had much better food for much less of the cost so let’s not blame it on “inflation”, I would say quite possibly this restaurant is failing and the owners are passing more cost along to the guests than should be legal.

Looked promising but turned out as a true disappointment. Tasteless and overcooked food, lack of creativity and originality. Wine bottle with a cap and no cork. Dishes did neither match the menu nor were explained by the staff, who brought little to no attention to our needs. In the end, the staff was cleaning the dining room while we had our desert, which pressed us to leave (it was only 22:15 by then). The restaurant itself was a good attempt at a cosy atmosphere, besides the fake fire place and the dirty bathroom. I came here for lunch a few years back when I lived in Edinburgh and remember it being lovely. But this time it was truly disappointing. I brought a friend here on the first evening of our Fringe trip and while the venue was still lovely and the service friendly, the food was uninspiring and pretty tasteless. It didn’t help that despite having asked us ahead of time for intolerances and us having told them we were gluten free, that they served us utterly inedible bread to start with. I understand that gluten free bread is often poor but this was truly inedible. When bread is served as a first course ina. £75 set menu, I don’t think this is good enough. There was also a pumpkin / squash dish which was so plain and tasteless, I would gladly have not eaten it. I can honestly say that I would have been disappointed in the food had I spent half the money but at this price, I was quite upset and won’t be returning next time I’m in town. We had our 20.30 reservation on Hogmanay cancelled less than an hour before our booking. I understand this was unavoidable but they state the reservation can be rescheduled or cancelled up until 3 days before the time of the reservation. Assuming this means they would have kept our 50% deposit as their site states no refunds are possible, I'm surprised we have not been offered any kind of compensation - we were not even offered any ideas on where else in the city might be able to go instead. Luckily we're locals so it didn't take us long to find a replacement restaurant but had we not been, or had this been any other year, we would have been left with nothing. I feel lucky that my partner and I are able to save up to treat ourselves to things like this, it feels like a very first world problem to complain about, but I'm surprised that the experience of the individual customer isn't of any concern to them when they are happy insuring themselves against cancellation. Edit: Sorry for not being clear, I know we're getting our deposit back. But had we cancelled on them they would have compensation for that, however we get nothing when they cancel on us.

Amazing tasting experience. Presented beautifully, producing flavours you would not think to try at home. Perfect portion sizes and a unique personal dining experience with superb service from all the team. A decent wine list. I would definitely recommend. Anyone put off by set menus, that’s what a tasting experience is about, the opportunity to try things you wouldn’t ordinarily chose.

Would leave fewer stars if possible. Cancelled our reservation. With thirty minutes notice. On New Year's Eve. While we were on our honeymoon. Apparently we'll get our deposit back at some point... Genuinely unbelievable that a restaurant thinks it can behave like this.

This felt like a restaurant designed for me so my review my be biased. The food to begin with was all incredible, a nice blend of sweet autumnal flavours peaking with a deliciously moreish dessert of Poached Pear, financier and whey ice cream with rosemary caramel. Plus the petit fours were incredible, chocolate truffles are without equal. The atmosphere was, for me, what really blew me away with this restaurant. It was like being invited to a friend's house for some great food. The service was excellent and very friendly, the waitresses both had a fantastic knowledge of the food and were passionate about the dishes. The music throughout was a blend of 70s/80s pop/rock which felt hand picked for me. With a vinyl player adding to the atmosphere. Extremely cosy, and effortlessly cool. This is a must visit restaurant whilst in Edinburgh and well worth the money. You'll be sure to have a fantastic time and within a few minutes walk from Carlton Hill definitely a good day combination.

Such an incredible meal here today, highly recommended. The service was so friendly and welcoming. The food was such a gloriously crafted paring of flavours. Each dish was truly a delight. Because of the small number of tables, I'd strongly suggest making a reservation a little in advance. Perfect date night.

Fresh, seasonal food in a relaxed, rustic setting. But we were left underwhelmed by the experience. For evening bookings, the only offering is a set tasting menu, consisting of local produce. These dishes are good quality but a little uninspired and are neither bursting with flavour or wildly adventurous. The ingredients are generally humble and inexpensive and there is little experimentation as implied by a tasting menu. This puts it at odds with the pricing which won't leave you with any change from £100 per person, assuming you stick to the essentials. The atmosphere has clearly suffered as a result of dining restrictions, imposed on the restaurant, which removes the communal dining feel. And whilst it's not pretentious, the food and drink does not do enough to elevate it to a level worthy of the price tag. If value doesn't factor into your decision making, you'll most likely have an enjoyable time here. But if you are visiting for a special occasion or rare treat, you might leave disappointed.

Personally found the menu paced too quickly with food arriving too fast. Shared plates are fine but maybe a little too delicate to pass around a table. Don’t believe the price is correct for the quality of the food - ingredients are fantastic but not really elevated beyond their natural freshness. You’re effectively paying for them to tend a small garden. Wine list is overpriced for the quality, and the service charge feels a bit like a slap in the face when a dinner table for two will run you at £200+ This is also the only tasting menu I’ve had where I was still hungry at the end. If you are in town and looking for something a bit different then it’s an interesting menu, but don’t go out of your way to visit.

Delicious autumn menu, but had we known in advance it would be a single tasting menu at £75 per person (starters are shared and then they bring your on tiny plates), we would not have booked. They are very strict with bookings and take a £10 pound deposit per person so we went as a special street for our birthdays. There was no special attention for a birthday as you might expect, even though we told them when we arrived this was our special day. The food itself is delicious and well presented, and the service is good. However there are some little things that make you regret the price and that are not up to the gastronomical feel, like cracked plates, crockery not being changed between fish and meat, and just layer straight on a wooden table without placemats or cloth. There was no spoon to serve the shared starters. Again, great food, but there are places in Edinburgh in the same spirit that are warmer and have spotless service, with a la carte options for those of us who can't really afford a tasting menu.

We were looking forward to trying somewhere new. I have given it a 2 star review taking into account the cover price and poor service. We arrived several minutes after our reservation time and the table wasn't ready. Courses were served too fast. We enjoy the experience of being out having a meal. Not running a marathon. We were told that the owner wants a quick turn around time. That does not make for an enjoyable experience. Food was ok. Nothing special in my view. Sorely disappointed.

Would have been nice to have a choice of either a la cart or just a tasting menu. Food was very nice but service was appalling. Trying to be a top end restaurant but was lots of small things that let the restaurant down. They seemed to want us in and out a quickly as possible and hardly any time to enjoy. Even when asked if we could have some extra time, still too fast.

Had a wonderful dinner here last night. It was good, well presented, delicious food. The service was good, we missed the names of some of the dishes, but that was fine as we always had the menu to refer to on the table. I would recommend going for an early reservation (we sat down at 17.30 and finished at 19.30). The cottage is then a little quieter when you are seated and everything feels more relaxed.

Amazing veggie options and really good wine. My favourite was the blue cheese tartlet with a walnut praline. Also the peaches and plums with whey ice cream was inventive and delicious. 🤌

Food was excellent and well presented. The restaurant was simple yet quirky and had a rustic feel. The service was good but slowed down towards the end. We had to wait over half an hour for our final course. Otherwise, it was a great experience overall.

This place was really great. Reasonably priced tasting menu in a cosy less than 20 covers converted bungalow. Excellent flavours in the dishes using something from the garden in each one. Really impressed and lovely wait staff too. Worth trying for a table or coming early or late. Very much recommended. Wine list uninspiring hence the 4 stars instead of 5. Wish places like this would spend more time curating their wine offerings.

I’m not a spontaneous person when it is about food. They closed our reservation because of the rain and left us without the booking on a Saturday evening. Would be great to know that something like this can happen before choosing the outdoor table. Didn’t try the food though. But the restaurant really killed the mood for one of my Scotland-trip days.

A true best kept secret in Edinburgh, exceptional food in a laid back setting. Informative staff and a well rounded wine list make this a must visit location if you enjoy artisan foods with an allotment aesthetic.

At a pretty nice crossroads. Right next to it there is a small street that leads to Greyfriars Cemetery, a “quiet and slippery” place if it has rained.
