The Gainsborough in Babergh

As a pool player for this pub I'm in here most days. What makes this pub the place to be is the character, the charm, the staff who make it such a cosy place to frequent. The food is amazing, my favourite by far is the roast dinners. Massive fan of then. The staff too are friendly and accommodating, even playing pool they come over and talk to you ask you about your day ect, their general attitude is very positive and it makes the experience that much better. I can't imagine going anywhere else. Keep up the great work!

A rather disappointing meal, burger was good but only one mouthful of coleslaw… ‘Homemade’ pie was terrible, dry, no sauce, tiny portion of tough meat. And most probably not homemade. Mash was rather salty, and no seasonal veg as menu stated just peas… Atmosphere more like a local drinking bar not somewhere to have a nice meal. Definitely won’t be back.

I am picky about Sunday Roasts. Everything was spot on, generous and really delicious. The staff were friendly and welcoming. This is a really family (and dog) friendly pub. Thank you!

Had table booked for 4 of us for 7 pm (booked almost 3 weeks previously ) ordered food ,burgers and fish and chips ,so nothing fancy or difficult ? Waited ...and waited ,eventually went and asked how much longer the food would be, was told it was 'on its way' ..waited more....food still didnt arrive so went and asked again to be told ' its being plated up ' ...well obviously it wasnt as waited another 20 mins ,by which time it was 8.30 pm, so we had been waiting for our food for an hour and a half ! Went up to the bar to say we couldnt wait any longer ,the response was 'ok' and that was it ?? No apology ,nothing .We dont believe they had even started cooking it .Absolutely appalling service .An hour and a half wait for burgers and fish and chips which never turned up is a joke ,and their customer service attitude was shocking .If they couldnt cope with the number of people dining they shouldnt have taken the bookings . (Although There were only 2 other tables that we could see who were eating ) We walked out and went to The Codfather Restaurant Opposite and had a lovely meal, cheaper and with fast , great service .Will NOT be returning to The Gainsborough that's for sure .

Had the greatest topside Sunday lunch. Even I couldn’t finish. The vegetables were cooked perfectly. A lot of my friend’s lunch was put in a doggy bag as she is too thin to fit it all in. Can thoroughly recommend. Service is excellent. Never tried the desert as I couldn’t have eaten a peanut. 🥜after the main.

Really disappointed with the food, salmon overcooked. Crushed potatoes cold. £15.95 for half a piece of salmon. We have eaten there so many times in the past. would certainly think twice before going.

Wow!! What a great place to stop in, after a long drive back down to East Anglia we were wanting some food, so while driving through Sudbury we saw The Gainsborough. First thing we noticed was how friendly and welcoming the staff were as we came in. The building interior was of a classic style, wooden beams and columns and a log fire (not lit thou) but making you feel relaxed all the same. Once seated and drinks bought we looked through the delightful menu and was really pleased to see classic pub food and more to our delight was how they created their own stamp on Dinner options too! The food came out hot and smelled amazing, with little room for dessert we passed on these but again the choices were superb. We stayed after for a few more drinks and bought in particular a beer/ale that gave a percentage back to a registered charity fund called Tiegan’s Smile which helps other children going though the same conditions their own daughter Tiegan is going through. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our evening and will definitely go back again! What a gem to have in Suffolk 😃

I booked here on recommendation from a friend for some friends and myself.... I booked a table for a Sunday lunch 2 weeks in advanced and was asked if we had any dietary requirements, I replied that one of us was vegetarian which they noted. (1) On the day my friend asked for a vegetarian roast to be told they don't do one! But my friend adapted and overcame this issue and ordered a roast without the meat and in its place had a portion of cauliflower cheese. We were happy that they would accommodate this, the rest of us ordered 2 x roast pork and one roast beef dinner. (2) On arrival we found all the food to be warm not hot, so requested it to be taken back. (3) When it came back out it was a little warmer and as we were all hungry we decided to keep and eat. (4) My first disappointment was no homemade Yorkshire pudding :( (5) 2 of us were promised on the menu crackling with our roast pork, we had a little tiny soft bit (6) We were also promised on the menu fresh apple sauce & stuffing, there was none (7) The roast beef was promised horseradish cream, there was none (8) We ordered a portion (four) of Pigs in blankets we got two (9) Cauliflower cheese - Couldn't get a fork in it as it was so hard (10) The "fresh seasonal vegetables" were indescribable and inedible (but going from other reviews here they were rainbow carrots) (11) Buttery swede mash - We never saw any (12) Roast potatoes crispy on the outside and hard in the middle The only thing that was edible was the meat which we have no complaints over. (13) My vegetarian friend called the waitress over to complain that her dinner was inedible and take it away the waitress apologised and said well I can't not charge you for the meal is there anything else I can get you? This was not her best choice of response! She offered my friend a vegetarian salad on a cold rainy October Sunday! My friend declined and said she will not be paying for the meal again the waitress said she could not, not charge her! We asked to speak to the manager and was told he was busy but would get to us as soon as he could. (14) My other 2 friends and myself had eaten what we could and left quite a bit of food to be taken back to the kitchen. A rather heated discussion ensued with all four of us unhappy with the meal and the pub quietened down for all to hear. A chef from the kitchen came into the pub to hear what was being said but never approached our table throughout our time there (we were there over 2 hours) but did visit other tables and speak to customers. I can't comment on other tables food but I can confirm that quite a lot of food had been left that lunchtime! (15) When the waitress cleared the table she dropped knives and forks onto friends lap (16) 2 of us thought we would try a dessert and both chose Eton Mess (surely they couldn't get that wrong) on arrival visually it looked amazing and we tucked in.... My friend asked if I had any meringue in mine to which I replied "it is scarce! and I've got raspberries not strawberries" When the waitress who we later found out to be a "supervisor" came to clear the deserts she said today would be all free. We were very grateful and happy that they realised their mistake and rectified as best they could. The manager now arrives to apologise for our bad experience, blaming it on a small kitchen which is smaller than his bedroom upstairs and asked if we would come back for another meal on him.... Honestly I don't think we will.... After this bad review I have written I can confess that I had been here only a few weeks previously one evening with my partner for a meal and despite the questionable playlist playing we had a lovely pub meal, but having had a meal with friends with 16 mistakes/errors or whatever you want to call them I would think twice about going here even for a burger....

Nice appearance of the pub , interior needed some work done , dirty toilets , tape used in toilets instead of proper fixings , still understand times tough , but we ordered 2 pies of the day , pie was awful very thin top pastry , then inside bits of fatty steak swimming in hot water , no gravy broth no additional veg in pie , came with reheated mash 2 black carrots and 2 ordinary carrots for £14 each appalling

Come from Birmingham to Sudbury for the weekend with friends for non league football. Went here when we arrived for a quick bite to eat..... The cheese and ham sandwich was delicious 😋 Went back on the Saturday for lunch and dinner...... The food again was exceptional (had cod and chips..... Really nice) Staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the ghost ship ale was awesome 👍 Highly recommended..... And a big thank you to all the staff ♥

Went in today to have lunch with 2 friends. I haven't been before. We all ordered latte's when we arrived. They all came in white mugs. 2 of the lattes were just steamed milk, completely white. Went up to the bar to point this out and the waiter bought 3 more. This time in glass latte cups. They were all a different colour, starting with darker and going down to very light. Waiter assured us that they had a double shot of coffee in each. We had to ask for sugar and spoons. Waiter bought sugar and wooden sticks and left. We all had menu's in front of us and had been there going on 15 minutes by then and he didn't ask us if we were ready to order. None of the latte's tasted of coffee at all, just hot milk. We waited a few more minutes, waiter at the bar chatting, and judging by the rubbish coffee and service, we didn't fancy trying the food. So we decided to go across the road for lunch. I went to the bar and asked to pay for the latte's and the waiter said 'Don't bother'. So I didn't and I won't bother to go in there again.

The burger was awful it looked like it had been deep fried along with the cheese. My sister ordered breads with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and they brought white sliced bread that had been thrown in the oven. When I mentioned to the waiter he wasn’t interested along with the check out guy. The chef was standing at the bar snd he said they ran out of bread ! In that case the waiter should have returned and told us. We were still charged and we did not eat it

Great food beautifully presented. The flavours of the Thai Curry were delicious. Plenty of food, great value. The Beef & Mushroom pie is extremely good. Really good value, great beer, great team, brilliant atmosphere.

Dropped in on Thursday afternoon for a few drinks with my wife and a friend. We decided we would eat and what a great decision that was. The food we ordered was superb in every way. I had fillet steak which was cooked to perfection. My wife had chicken Caesar salad which again was perfect and our friend had a veggie curry which she said was faultless. The staff were fun and friendly and the whole atmosphere was great. I highly recommend if you are looking for freshly cooked and beautifully presented food at a very reasonable price you should visit this Pub you will not be disappointed.

Myself, my wife and 2 daughters visited the Gainsborough pub last Wednesday for dinner. We were greeted by the lovely Philip and Molly who both made us feel welcome. I ordered the Thai Green Curry. My wife ordered the fish and chips and my 2 daughters both had the burger and chips. All the food was cooked from scratch and didn't take long to arrive at our table. The food was hot, tasty and plentiful. Chef Martin made a special visit to our table to explain the spices in my Thai Green Curry. Very reasonably priced, very friendly staff and will definitely be visiting there again. Well done to Tony, Becky and all the staff. 10 out of 10.

We visited the Gainsborough for Thursday lunch following a circular walk in the nearby countryside. The staff made us welcome as usual and COVID screens, table service and guidance were in placed and used. A good range of well kept traditional ales, lagers and ciders, etc. A smaller menu than pre-virus but never the less a good range of tradition pub style food. Good portions and good value. We look forward to visiting again.

Making the most of Boris Johnsons half price offer. A good eating area outside which feels safer than eating in. Limited menu but the starters and mains we had were pretty good. Service good and social distancing measures in place.

I reserved a table for our family of 7 people. Sat in a lovely part of the restaurant which was very comfortable, good decor and very clean. Ordered meals, mainly of which were the Sunday Roast beef. All the meals were delivered to our table at the same time by the very friendly waiting team. All the meals were of good size and the beef was out of this world, so delicious, very tender, cooked to perfection and not a single piece of fat on any of our meat. In fact, everyone enjoyed it so much, not only did everyone comment on the beautiful meal, and what was more amazing with my family, nobody left anything - all very cleared plate. The dessert board was even more tempting. Although we were full from the main course, we thought we had to try one of the deserts, so we all had something and again they were so delicious we all finished our plates again. The chefs obviously care and have a passion for the food they serve together with the friendly front of house experience. I have no hesitation to rate this restaurant 5 stars and look forward to returning soon. Thank you.

I have been coming here for over a year now. Have had fish and chips, burger, ham egg and chips, fish finger sandwich, lamb shank, Sunday roast etc. Excellent pub food with above average service for a pub. Discreet service. Oh and forgot to say good value for money cocktails on a Friday night. Would seriously recommend for casual dining and informal business dining during the day.

Went for dinner with a group of friends last night - the food was very good and served hot on hot plates which makes all the difference - well done chef a few of us had the grill special deal (with either a free bottle of wine or free dessert. Excellent value with good service too. A very enjoyable evening and would recommend to anyone.

We had lunch and a couple of drinks on a Saturday afternoon, market day for Sudbury.Bar and serving staff were good, there was plenty of room at and around the tables. We noticed business people using this pub as well as families and couples.The bar food was well presentedand tasty; there was probably sufficient choice for most tastes. We enjoyed the experience and in fact, stayed for more drinks after the meal.

It looks like a normal pub but the food is super yummy - I have been twice now. First I have a pie and mash, one of the best pies I’ve ever had. Then I had a chicken burger - moist with creative toppings. Great service, great food. I’m yet to go in the evenings when it must be quite busy, but had relaxing lunches there by myself.

Some time ago now, we went to The Gainsborough for a Mexican evening. Now I know that Mexico is a large country but what we experienced there was nothing like any of the food we had in Mexico. Service was poor, as was the food. We will not be returning.

A friend booked a table here although none of the group had visited before. Four of us ordered four different things and all came out perfectly. Food was hot, delicious and plentiful. However, whilst the food was fab, it was the service we received that was the star of the show. Nothing was too much trouble, the staff were chatty, knowledgeable and friendly. Nice to know that there are still managers/owners out there who deliver first class service (and food) and care about what they do. This place is definitely worth a visit whatever time of day. tOur friend, my wife and I enjoyed Saturday lunch at The Gainsborough, The service was excellent, the food first class and remarkably good value.My wife and our friend took advantage of the two meals for £15 offer and had so much they asked if what they could not eat could be wrapped for them to take home. Our waiter was very happy to do this. My wife was amazed at the generous four, thick-cut slices of ham that came with her ham, eggs, and chips so on Sunday she had two of the ham slices with a salad. I opted for the` avocado salad. This was also a dish of very generous proportions accompanied by a warm bread roll. The dish was presented very well, delicious and excellent value.

This is the best pub in Sudbury with the best kept beers, wonderful cocktails and fabulous staff. Hats off to Darren he knows how to run a pub. Superb

From the minute we arrived and received a warm welcome until we left, the service was first class. Drinks brought to table, waiter patiently explaining menu options (great deal on free starters), extra chips and delicious food (burgers, chicken, fish, sharing boards, salad). Definitely be back next time we have a family get together.

On two occasions recently my wife, a friend, and myself have enjoyed superb lunches at The Gainsborouh.The service has been excellent, the food well-presented, perfectly cooked, and of generous proportions, and the value for money has been superbOn both occasions the menu included a vegetarian, a fish, and meat options for main courses and starters.

Friday night out at the pub, food was very good as was the service. Reasonable value and good beers, one of the better places to eat in town

Can’t stop going here, you may have a little wait but up to now it’s been worth it, Cajun chicken burgers and a pint, a few variations to choose from as well, definitely recommend it

Not sure what’s happened lately in this , what was our go to pub in Sudbury. Used to offer the best food and service. Today we had booked a table for 4 at lunchtime . We had to go and find someone to take our order for food which took nearly an hour to arrive. The young lady who took our order seemed to be on a different planet, 2 pints of beer was translated to 2 spritzers , kept forgetting what we asked for, forgot the cutlery for desert........Such a shame, will use this place for the odd drink in the future but unlikely to book for food again.

We visited on Sunday for my Mums birthday. It was very busy but luckily we booked. We had starters and mains which was very reasonably priced. The food was delicious everyone enjoyed each course. The service was excellent it was such a lovely meal. We will definitely be back.

Went for a birger night. 2 for the price of one. Good value well presented and a griddled gerkin. love them. Also a very nice bottle of FRENCH Pinot Noir. Good helpful and friendly staff. Recomend.

Ask for roast Chicken dinner. Was disappointed to get boiled potatoes and not roast especially as they were hard as were the rest of the vegetables on the plate. Was polite friendly service.

Daughter chose this venue for her birthday lunch with family, as we’d been here many times before and always had a good meal and service Unfortunately on this occasion the service let us down. Our first waitress was lovely, meals came out very hot, and a good standard. Another waitress took over after, who was surly, and uninterested. Our plates were taken away, then we were just left to sit and wait to be asked about more drinks, deserts etc. Eventually my husband asked about deserts, the waitress brought over the desert menu, plonked it on the table, then went away, never to be seen again! In the end we left and had drinks elsewhere.Yes we could’ve found another member of staff, but we came out for our daughters birthday treat to be waited on!It was a shame , we’ve eaten here many times and always been happy, the food was good as usual, perhaps waitress was having a bad day!! Felt sorry for our daughter though

Had a brilliant evening in the Gainsborough. Service was great even though it was busy. My steak was cooked perfectly and the blue cheese sauce was heavenly. The food here is great value for the quality on offer. We will definitely be back soon.

Cheap simple unpretentious excellent pub grub. Service could not have better matched to well kept real ale. Could not fault.

Popped in today for a Sunday lunch. Good variety of choices, 2 options for veggies. We had roast lamb and roast beef. Generous portions. Lots of veg which I love. Also additional gravy in little jugs which came with our main meal. Who doesn't like extra gravy?! Friendly staff. Lovely homely pub. Well definitely return. Two courses for £14.

Amazing food, amazing staff and amazing cocktails and drink selection. What more could you want!? May just be a pub but the foods way better than your average pub food, and they take a lot of pride in the appearance of food and the cocktails!

The food here is really good, popped in for lunch last week with a friend, service is friendly, we did have a bit of a wait for the food but not excessive, it’s worth it though as the food is freshly cooked, I had the Cajun chicken burger which was very nice, my friend had the fish finger sandwich and I must say the fish fingers were the biggest I’ve ever seen! obviously home made and they must be good as my friend always orders them, they also do a buy one get one free burger night on a Wednesday night I believe, I would highly recommend The Gainsborough.

20 of us went there after a registry office wedding. The staff were very good. It was just unfortunate that on a Friday food was not available until 6pm.

The staff were very friendly and welcomng. My only negative comment is that there was not much choice of starters on the menu .A choice of 2 dishes or a sharing board. Unfortunaly my hot chilli prawns were presented in a skillet so hot that I burnt my hand!!

I needed to ask for a dairy free dessert and was so pleased to be offered a choice of dishes! A yummy chocolate ice-cream with some fresh raspberries was my choice. We always feel welcome when we visit the Gainsborough, the staff smile and look cheerful - without being gushing. Great place. Thanks

Not been before and suggested by relative. This is very much a busy town centre pub with a late licence until 2am. Our visit was on a Saturday evening and a fair number of drinkers were in the pub, it was also quite noisy at times with people enjoying themselves. Nevertheless the very nice staff, table service, food and it’s presentation was excellent. The steak was tender and faultless, a match for anything offered in Long Melford. I also had a cheese board and again it was plentiful and very well presented. If you are looking for a restaurant meal or indeed a quiet environment to eat then the weekend slot here may not be your ideal, however if out with friends for drinks or no doubt in a quieter week day then I would highly recommend eating here.

6 if us went for Sunday roast dinner. All of us received excellent service and food. My partner and I enjoyed so much we returned the following week to try something else.On a downside there are no disabled toilets and so I could only use the exceptionally small cubicle with help from my daughter and had to have the toilet door left open. So word of warning don’t drink too much!

Booked a table for a group of us - ten people - we had a brilliant lunch. Some of the group had never visited the pub before and all of them were very impressed. Very attentive service and the food was excellent. The fish and chips were delicious and the staff brought us out bowls of extra chips too. Excellent value at £10 for two! Some of my friends had a pudding - also excellent. I am very rarely disappointed with the food here and the staff are very welcoming and friendly. The pub itself is spotless and the toilets also. I would definitely recommend a visit.

Me and my wife visit The Gainsborough several times a month. The staff are very attentive, the food is superb and the location is always clean and tidy. The prices are good too. If visiting or living in Sudbury, you will miss out on a great venue if you don't go in.

Eat in here when I get the chance. Best food in Sudbury, try the lunch menu, which is not just good value it’s really good too. Sunday brilliant roast!! Advisable to book as it’s a well known pub for good food!

Having eaten here a few times in the evening it appears to me that the lunch time menu offers more selection. Evening meals are limited and fairly expensive. Although the food is of a good quality. The lunch time menu is far more varied and actually offer better dishes. Not enough bar staff and this causes problems with queuing. Quite a bland atmosphere in the pub.

Just had Sunday lunch and whilst I'm digesting their food, thought I'd jot down a few lines for you. Sudbury is one of the finest towns in the East of England for shopping if your penchant is for charity shops and getting your hair done! Add eating out to your shopping list! This restaurant is top notch. Great food, staff attentive yet not overly punctilious. Just the right recipe in my books. Well done on a job well done with the fayre not being 'well done'. Cooked just right in my opinion. If you haven't dined there before, get 'yerself' in there. You won't be disappointed.

Love this place - have been coming quite regularly with friends mostly lunchtimes but on the odd evening too. The staff are very friendly and welcoming - the food excellent - very good value all round. Would definitely recommend to everyone. If l was being picky they could do with smaller tables to seat two or three people as l have popped in for lunch but all the tables taken - most of the tables seat six people and most of us don't like sharing a table with people they don't know. Love the fact that they have a cosy fire lit when it's cold outside!

We have eaten here quite a few times. The staff have always been very welcoming and attentive.The food is always well presented and good value for money.Our only criticism is that the menu needs to change more often. Other than perhaps one special, each time, the menu has not changed for months. We have tried nearly everything available, so please a bit more variety.

Pretty average. Much better than it used to be, pleasant staff food portions to big which can be off putting.

It has a small and cosy atmosphere. It has really pleasant service and it’s good value for money. The drinks menu is top notch too. It’s a family favourite.

A bit of a regular lunchtime haunt which has expanded to evening visits. Always a warm welcome and interesting menu that changes regularly and certainly the best value in town. Home cooked food well prepared and presented including the two eat for £10 at lunchtime cannot be beaten by anything similar in Sudbury.Getting busier as the reputation grows but for a pub with food it is truly excellent.

We went at lunchtime as a group as people that work in the same building but not for the same companies. We had arranged this as our Christmas lunch and it was excellent, food amazing great service and wonderful atmosphere.

Good food in a busy place waitress was brilliant and very helpful they clised the pub whilst meals were taking place then opened when finished. Would return
