With a day off work we decided that a local(ish) trip out was called for. We hadn't really got anywhere in mind and then I remembered this lovely little tea room in the heart of Dale Abbey. It's off what could be described as the main road in the village (the road is even called 'The Village') but be aware that this road is very narrow when busy. There is a small amount of parking in site, though if it is even remotely busy in the tea room you will probably find yourself parking on the road. The tea room itself is lovely. It really encapsulates what I would consider to be the heart of the village. Everyone seems to know everyone else, even though im sure that is not the case - it is merely the feeling you get when people are so polite and welcoming. That must be said about the staff. They are all lovely. The selection of cakes and scones (home made, each and every one) is impressive and I csn vouch for the the fact that they taste great too. One thing you need to be wary off is this places opening times. It is pretty 'fluid' it is fair to say, however you can always check in advance on their website. Its a beautiful place in a beautiful village, and I would urge anyone passing through (or even remotely close by) to pop in and enjoy it for themselves

A great find in the pretty village of Dale Abbey. This art cafe is in the grounds of a family chocolate box cottage/farmhouse. It’s so English with the scones, jackets and quiche bubbling away in the Aga. The owner is very warm and friendly and nothing is to much trouble. We had the scones and they came with an abundance of butter - delicious 😋 They only open at certain times so keep an eye on their socials.

This is our favourite place for home made Scones, cakes and savoury treats. Recommend starting with Lasagne then home made crumble. A small snack cheese scone with pickle and lump of cheese then finish with cherry scone jam and lots of cream, include a big pot of tea Lovely friendly service. Normally only cash.

We held the funeral wake for my mother here on June 30th. The whole event was arranged according to our needs, the menu discussed including vegetarian and gluten free options, and how many people to cater for. We had the place to ourselves and about twenty guests on a lovely sunny day, sitting inside or out and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The whole event was skillfully prepared and managed to perfection by Diane, not forgetting her two helpers. The food was superb, the whole experience couldn't have been better. My mother would have loved it, she always did enjoy her visits here. Thanks Friars House Tea Room, we'll be back in happier circumstances. We highly recommend this place.

Lovely place for cakes a day scones and drinks after a walk in the beautiful surrounding area. Indoor and outdoor seating. All food homemade and friendly service. Check first on their Facebook page to see if they're open (usually best Sunday afternoons). Perfect for walking to the Hermit's cave in the nearby wood and to the Abbey arch and countryside paths. Lots of art on the walls and gifts to buy.

Lovely cherry scone and butter. The Americano coffee was OK but nothing special. I thought it may have been filter whereas I was expecting something like a large espresso. My wife was happy with her Mocha which was definitely made from freshly ground beans. Lovely environment and lovely staff. 😀 I was invited back by the owner for a free coffee. This was excellent. Thank you, for taking the trouble to respond to my review. I would highly recommend this venue to everyone.

Thoroughly enjoyed our scone and coffee as we were too early for lunch ( but that will be for another day). We have been coming here for years now and we have never once had anything other than a thoroughly enjoyable time. This café is annexed to a beautiful old house that stands in the equally beautiful village of Dale Abbey, just outside of Ilkeston. It is very much off the beaten track as it sits on what is effectively a dead end off the main/only road through the tiny village. They do a great line of cheese, plain or fruit scones, all freshly prepared on the day, which in turn come with ample supplies of cream/butter/jam/whatever your preference is. They also do freshly prepared cakes and snacks such as sausage rolls (brought in from nearby Stacey's in Ilkeston who do the finest bread/sausage rolls known to man. Special mention must also go to the tea, as a pot of tea for two will give you enough tea with which to sink a battleship. The couple who run this place are lovely, informative and really happy to have a chat, giving this place a really homely feel. There is also a courtyard out the front in which you can enjoy your food/drinks in the beautiful sunshine (if you are lucky enough to go on such a day) or alternatively the nice rustic café is both spacious and cosy at the same time, making grey or rainy days seem less miserable. This is also a great location because you are near to the two principle walking points in Dale Abbey, with easy access to Hermit's Wood (an ancient remnant of a much larger Sherwood Forest) in which stands the medieval Hermitage carved into the rock face, as well as a good, close proximity to All Saints Church in which there are some lovely medieval wall paintings recently made visible. Be aware though that The Friars House is only open on a Sunday and Monday. If you are anywhere remotely near Dale Abbey then I urge you to come and visit The Friars House.

I visit the Friar's House every few months because, if I visited any more, I'd eat too much cake. The décor is nice: a little rustic, a little vintage and comfortable. We are regular visitors to the Friars Houseafter finding the Tea Room by accident on a local walk a few years ago now.. We just love evrything about it. The building is historic and quaint. Indoors the tea room is beautifully set out. There are paintings for sale by local artists which are displayed together with items of vintage china and quality hand made crafts. The food...all freshly baked in the Aga is gorgeous and of a high standard..including - scones to die for, quiches, cakes etc. etc.. also a good choice of coffees and teas . Diane and John the owners are the perfect hosts, very pleasant and always welcoming as are the other members of the staff.. There is seating outside also suitable for dog walkers which is particularly lovely in the summer months. The tea room is located in a quiet beautiful village near to the historic church and Arch..also worth a visit. Would HIGHLY recommend a visit.
