The Foxley Hatch in Croydon

Really like this pub. Hoping it will keep going. Staff excellent-as with all the Spoons pubs I've been to.

Great pub, good food for the price, and drinks shame about the staff at the front of House, Holly is really not in the right job, she is unfriendly, and has a real attitude problem, and has a real problem with smiling and communication with the punters punk girl ie the one with all the piercings is very pleasant until her boyfriend is on the same shift, who is highly jealous and follows her about like a sick love pubby and then she shuts down and is very un friendly . Tammy is excellent friendly and chats to all the punters. Darren is a good leader , but made a real big mistake in giving regulars a table to instead of punters who he told that we could not book a table for football and then came in to the pub and he had allocated tables to all his friends. Lee is an excellent bar man .

This is an honest pub where you can buy a perfectly good beer for a £2 a pint when they are running a promotion and not much more than that every day. The pizzas and curry are great value, and are also probably the best choice. It is a locals pub which is now being disposed of by Wetherspoons which will be a sad day for those residents that appreciate good value. Friendly staff, a decent all round place which we will see less and less of. Perhaps a few of the reviews below might reconsider their comments when they have to pay double for the same elsewhere in the future.

3 out 5 the service was quick but food was not that good but its food so happy I had something to eat and was ok at times but the apple crumble could be cooked more

Visited on a Friday evening and greeted at the door by the manager who ushered us to a table. The pub is well organised to cope with the social distancing and the current requirements. Enjoyed a drink. All the beers are now on which they were not a few days earlier. After my drink I queued as required to order food. They had no steaks or gammon steaks!! What is going on? They have only just opened and they are out to food, what a nonsense. As we left I complained to the manager at the door that there was no sign or indication of the lack of food. He responded that if they displayed a list of what was not available there would not be enough room to show it. I doubt it is his fault but be fair let us know. It was not worth the effort of walking to the pub for a night out. The adjacent curry shop gained the benefit of my money.

I popped in here for lunch today, 11-7-20, the pub is located on Russell Hill in Purley, I wasn’t very impressed to be honest, for lunch I had a jacket potato with roasted vegetables, it was tasteless, I had a soda water & lime, 80p , the first time I’ve been charged for that in a pub. I was amazed that during this period there was no track & trace, and no hand sanitiser as you walk in, although there was one a little further into the bar, there were signs to say please queue here and please keep the bar are clear, now on my way home I popped into The Kenley Hotel, I had to sign in and leave my phone number there was hand sanitiser as I walked in and I was told I needed to take a seat, I went to use the toilet and was told to wait a few minutes as someone was in there giving it its half hourly clean, if you compare all this to The Foxly Hatch then I know where I felt safest, make up your own minds but I won’t be rushing back.

What is it with Wetherspoons? They seem totally incapable of clearing tables - this is the second time we've had to clear the tables ourselves and been given a damp cloth to wipe clean. Priority was given to those ordering drinks using the table service app and those of us who waited at the bar were left waiting for ages. Shan't bother with Wetherspoons again - rather pay the extra and get the service I want.

So came in this evening with a couple of friends for some late night dinner. We visit Wetherspoons regularly and were shocked by what we received. On approach there was smashed glass in the outside seating area and had no tables to sit at when we came in. Service itself was fine, and it wasn’t busy at the bar. Food was taking time before someone came out and said we had no peas and offered an alternative option- we didn’t mind but we had already past the 15 minute mark by this point. Food came out round about 25 minutes after placing our order, which was followed by another 3/4 minutes waiting for cutlery, there was no apology for the delay in our food. Our food wasn’t hot and my friends chips also were under-portioned. A manager of some kind did ask us how our food was and we did pause, but we didn’t want to wait for another set of meals so we continued to eat. Unfortunately we will not be coming back to this pub and if it was busier then we would of understood but performance this time round wasn’t great.

Normally go for the Friday fish and chip deal. Always lovely and fresh.Service a!says good and of course good prices

We sat at a table that had been reserved for 18.00 but as a family of 4 we turned up at 18.45 and asked as no-one had turned up could we sit there and told yes by the staff! At 19.00 we were ordering food and an old couple turned up to say they had reserved our table for 19.00 but obviously the pub staff or customer had got the time wrong??? We spoke to the bar staff who could not care less, so my husband and I spent 10 mins moving tables the other side of restaurant and finding chairs for them much to the amusement of your staff!! Finally we asked for the simple condiment of ketchup to which female member staff said we have none and that was the end of the subject!!! How do you manage to run out of ketchup?????

For: A seemingly limited menu for a Spoons was delivered well. Friendly staff. Against: What a dump! Seriously overdue a major refit. Toilets are disgusting and public areas scruffy beyond. Time Tim paid a visit!

Great cheap tasty food with a nice atmosphere. Bar staff helpful & polite. Place can get quite packed with limited seating but can usually get a table within half hour of arriving.

I ordered over the phone for breakfast and asked how long it would take I was told 10 minutes.. arrived exactly to the time to be told we could not process your order over the phone as you must pay at the time of ordering. This was not mentioned to me on the phone so I spent a further 15 minutes waiting for my meal to be made. There's was no attempt made to call me to inform me. I will not be visiting this establishment again.p.s. there where no disposable cutlery for my take away... 100% poor service

Yes, this is a standard chain, however, the service/food/beer selection is above average. They know the regulars and get to know new people. Food better than others in the chain and service better,

Good clean Wetherspoons pub - friendly staff, good range of decent beers - everything you expect from a spoons!

Going by the standard of Wetherspoons, this is certainly one of the 'nicer' pubs. Food is always below par as the drinks. However the staff make it up here!

Firstly not that busy, but they only appeared to have one person on the bar, serving drinks, running food and cutlery. Ordered the food, plates were very hot, and the food ok, had the bean chilli, was ok and the other a steak and kidney pud, again ok. Cutlery dumped on the table, unpolished and no napkins. My friends food arrived and the cutlery again dumped on the table, on inspection it was dirty so went to the bar for a new knife, it never arrived, and was told they had run out of napkins. There is a massive Tesco across the road, and they get regular pub deliveries. Was offered 'blue roll'. No apologies nothing. Two other members of staff appeared when my friend appeared to ask for another knife, I think one of them was the chef as he had marks of a hat on his hair. Even so, if my local Weatherspoons operated in this fashion it would be empty. It is stacked out every day and I live in a small town in Wiltshire. Shame on you Weatherspoons for letting this one slip.

Our coach stopped here recently on the way to football at Crystal Palace. We had informed the Manager that we would be stopping there and they had put 3 staff on behind the bar, so bar service was ok. Only 2 real ales on (Doom Bar and Old Speckled Hen) but the Old Speckled Hen was excellent at a great price of £2.15. .Not the biggest pub but adequate. The food was an issue - no jacket potatoes and no burgers available. We ordered the Christmas turkey lunch which was only warm when it arrived. We sent it back and it was returned hot.

will have to ban this place for at 2 months, hopfully the staff here now will have been sacked by then!

Originally planning to come down to London with a pal of mine, he dropped out but I came down nonetheless. A Southern train from London Bridge dropped me here and the branch is 10 minutes walk from the station. It appeared pleasant if not very busy; then again this was around 13:00 on a Thursday. The girl serving behind the bar was pleasant, so a swift half pint later it was off to Croydon and the three branches there.

This one is our usual local. We always like to go here for a few drinks before going out for a meal. The pub is lovely with a warm, family friendly atmosphere. We have eaten here a few times. Although the menu is relatively more sifted down than your typical Wetherspoons menu, the food is still as nice as ever. Would highly recommend steak night. Staff are very friendly as well with an excellent level of service. All in all a really lovely, pleasant pub!

Its a Wetherspoons - so do 't go expecting anything radically different to what you usually go to, but the staff are friendly, everything is reasonably priced and the place is clean: there are worse places to go if you're in Purley...

I never knew there was a Wetherspoons in Purley until a local newspaper mentioned it in an article. And I've lived in the area for 6 years. I thought no one mentioned it because it wasn't any good but thankfully found it very pleasant. Chatty locals with friendly bar staff made it very welcoming. My wife and I enjoyed the food, veggie burger and the Empire State Burger. Good value tasty burgers....and the usual great selection of drinks. We'll be returning.

Found this by off chance when it was in one of the local papers . Great pub fantastic vegetarian burger and great staff. Will definitely be going again

The Foxley Hatch is a very normal pub in Purley with reasonably priced drinks. There is nothing overly special about the interior or exterior although it is nice enough. Not a must visit but not a bad choice,

Been to this pub many times, either for a quick staff lunch or to eat in the evening. If you need a quick pub grub meal then this place is one of the best to offer in Purley!

Went here for a quick drink after a nice meal out in Purley. The woman behind the bar was probably the most arrogant barmaid I've encountered in 35 years. Seemed to be rude to everyone. Went for another drink as the bell rang and was told I was too late although she clearly served her regulars/cronies 5 minutes later. Plenty of more welcoming places to drink in the area so happy to avoid this place. The toilets also looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years.

This is a Weatherspoons, you get what it says on the tin. The food is excellent for the price and I am amazed that anyone can complain given that the food element when you take off the drink comes to about £4 (the price of a couple of bags of crisps). It is what it is, if your hungry and thirsty and only have a £10 on you you really can't go wrong.

As the title says the staff were courteous the food OK apart from the apple crumble which was frozen in the middle....the rest of it was OK.....I didn't complain because the other apple crumble my wife was eating was OK...our be fair if I did complain the staff would have been OK and sorted it out.....I am sure.

Food here wasn't great but for the price, was ok, very small jacket potato, garlic ciabatta was terrible, wish I had taken a photo, two small spots of garlic in the middle, I would have sent back, but my husband didn't want to complain, I don't know how that was sent out. His chicken was tough, however friends steak and lamb shank they enjoyed. The lady serving makes that pub, chatty and happy, the guys lacked a bit of oomph, but nothing wrong with service otherwise, just no smile! Busy later on, to the point that ppl were spilling over in to our table, blocking the fire exit and disabled toilet, and had to be asked to move several times. Like an earlier review said, 'something missing'.

I'm always going to the Foxley hatch becaus it has really nice atmosphere and it's really cheap. Even if you go with the family or your friends it's really nice. The staff is always polite and happy. I love their food and the portion is very big for the money you spend.

Meet with my brother, son and friend for a weekend drinking session. Typical Wetherspoons. Cheap beer, crowded but lively. What's more to say. Facilities were clean. Good staff, and not too long to wait at the bar.

Pero la comida es lo que te dan en cada cucharas y su buena relación calidad-precio no esperes grandes cosas y recuerdos. Pero tiene un ambiente muy local ya que hay unos cuantos asiduos local que ve aquí.

Its a Wetherspoon so you know what to expect - good value food and drinks. I've been on steak night and curry night and food has always been good quality. Popular place and not that big so advisable to book a table if you want to eat.

dont't argue with the female staff, they will never allow you back, even if you have beebn a long-time regular

Cheap and fine for a quick pit stop but don't linger as can feel yourself aging the longer you stay

Knowing the Wetherspoon pubs do food from Breakfast to evening meals - decided to try out the lamb shank. OMG the lamb was good and the bone that the lamb came off was enormous. Great gravy and mash potatoes that came with it. Will try out the breakfast again when I next come to Purley.

It is a weatherspoon pub.good choice of draught beer, good choice of wine also. Cheap food. Good breakfast a good choice of items on menu.

Had made two visit Thursday 16/02 & 17/02We both had the guest curry Beef Madras c/w rice nan bread & poppadum x 2 great value with a drink 6.99 highly recommendedHowever tonight the fish & chips c/w peas was not good ! The chips & peas were fine but the fish was dry & overcooked I would not order again even though cheap

Friday night busy night. Hey stopped doing the rose on tap like normal weatherspoons. They reduced the food menu by half !!!! You can forget having a salad. Anyway ordered the gammon instead of fries wanted side salad. When the food came the side salad was a bunch of lettuce leaves, red onion and a couple of cherry tomatoes the down side was that the salad didn't come with a dressing! Okay fine. The worse part was that I went to the Till to ask for a the crumble with custard, clear as day! When it came it arrived with ice cream, I took it back and they said they will put custard on it. 5 minutes later someone came over and said the reason why it came with ice cream because custard wasn't in option in the system. They sold out. So they said they'll remake another. 10 minutes later it arrived but they gave me back the old one but this time there was no ice cream it was all melted ice cream This could of been avoided if someone told me at the till when I ordered that custard wasn't available. Overall it took 25 minutes to have an apple crumble

Cheap and cheerful pub, good Sunday lunches served. Good selection of beers and friendly staff. Sport on the TV.

Have been using The Foxley Hatch while working in the area for the last 30 weeks and my previous reviews remain unchanged. "Decent pub frequented by mostly regulars, good budget place to eat and the service has seemed to go from good to excellent the more I have used the place. However, went in last night and after a couple of beers went to the bar to order a steak; after all it was steak night and 95% of the steaks I have eaten in there had been good. I proceeded to order only to be told by the very polite young chap taking my order that they had run out of steak totally; both Sirloin and Aberdeen Angus. Bit strange I think to myself as it was @ 10 past 8 on a steak night. At this point a Lady, I now know to be the Land Lady walked pass and I asked the question, was this correct, to which she gave a rather abrupt YES and walked off without further comment. Oh well I thought, maybe she had been having a bad day and being asked if there was any steak available on steak night pushed here over the edge of politeness! With that I ordered Gammon, not the steak I wanted but turned out to be very nice indeed. While eating this the lovely Land Lady was exiting the premises and I thought, admittedly a bit tongue in cheek to thank her for her helpfulness 10 minuite prior, thinking this would give here the opportunity to say something along the lines of ....sorry about that...bad day....da... da...da. I DON'T KNOW WHO OR WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE came the lightening speed response(I can only assume that this has come after years of being rude) and off she went. Well, while in a public house I thought I was a customer!!!!!, but maybe I got that wrong. Previous reviews remain unchanged but I found the Land Lady to be very abrupt and unpleasant. Think I will voice my displeasure by voting with my feet and using some other pub with a more pleasant Land Lady/Lord. Pity really, decent place to eat and drink while away from home. A response from the owner would be more than welcome, but please give it a miss if its a standard thank you for bringing this to our attention and we will look in to it!

Seemed to go a bit adrift after my last review with a change to the menu and this seemed to directly effect the number of customers.........but........most of the old menu has now been re-instated and things seem to be back to normal. Seemed a strange thing to do. Most important part of any business is bums on seats, they had that butt! then lost a bit of it. But as I said, now back to normal with a good selection of reasonable food at very reasonable price.

This is a wetherspoon's pub, it is not plush or extravagantly decorated but it does what it should really quite well. Service is efficient and there are as ever a good range of beers at reasonable prices. Nice play to visit for a couple of beers before venturing to one of many local restaurants.

Snack in a hurry and good quality.Full plate of chicken wings (£4.79),mayo and spicy dip all well cooked and piping hot.glass of Pepsi max (£1.80).Quite a small 'Spoons but spotlessly clean,quick and efficient service.Couldn't fault the place.

On busy road in main street, OK if pedestrian but parking in the one way street outside was limited. Typical Spoons, dining area is at rear of pub but plenty of tables for drinking and eating in the main pub area and outside. We had two main meals and two pints for £15, the food was hot, tasty and plentiful. The drinks were cold, fellow guest were mainly men but there were about a dozen women also mainly eating. It was clean and the staff friendly and attentive

Have been using the Foxley Hatch for the last few months while working in the area. Mostly used by locals, not a magnet for out-of-town-contractors; which indeed I am. Food always of a good standard as is the service. I would say this Witherspoon's is better than the average

Great prices as wetherspoons all are. Large selection of food and drink. Friendly staff. Unfortunately the only outside space is a few tables next to a busy road.

we always use this pub as its friendly and the food is also very good .the service is very good and you never have to wait long for a beer !!

As with all weatherspoons pub , beer is cheap. You don't get many females in there just a load of blokes drinking beer. Serve is very quick .

We went for breakfast at 11.00 am on Saturday morning and had a fairly long wait to get served as there was only one member of bar staff on. We were told there would be a 15 to 20 minute wait which we had no problem with. Subsequently we then found out there was also only one member of kitchen staff. The locals said this was due to the increase in the minimum wage and that the pub had cut down on the staffing hours, so the one bar staff was taking orders, making drinks and serving food when it arrived. Our breakfast took 40 minutes. I have no complaints about the staff, they were doing the best they could and the drinks and food were good. The 'Terrible' rating is for the pressure that wetherspoons is putting on its staff. I would appreciate feedback from wetherspoons as to their explanation of the situation.

Visited early on a Friday evening. Quite a busy place but the bar was well staffed with four staff behind it. Lager on draft was good and reasonably priced. Went with mates not sure I would take my family.

Another visit in the hope it was better than the previous visit. It has potential, and certainly would help with a more friendlier service approach.

went for a early afternoon pint and it took me 15 minutes to get served. had to sit at a table that had not been cleared from the previous patrons. looked around the pub and it seemed that was the case for many tables. new customers having to clear there own tables because the staff seemed to want to serve 'locals' before anyone else. the toilets were in need of a refurb. we had 2 drinks and not one single table was cleared even when food was brought to a already cluttered table. poor show here wont be returning.

Really comfortable, down-to-earth, welcoming atmosphere. Relaxed with prompt service and lovely staff. Had thirst quenching; San Pelligrino Blood Orange (sparkling soft drink) with ice and a superfood pasta main: with grilled halloumi and a bowl of chips and coleslaw sides. Extremely generous portions. Food very high standard and facilities were immaculately clean and well presented. Plan to return - clearly a popular lunch spot. Pasta dish was fresh tasting and beautifully mixed with great combinations~extremely tasty! Chips were simply gorgeous and coleslaw was perfect. Nice warm pub on a chilly day. Great prices for food, superb deals and amazing drinks prices. Nice walk through the park on the way back home & so convenient to Purley shops and amenities.

Not visited here for several years so popped in with a mate. Quite a diverse group of customers, some very polite and some either rude or simply oblivious. Staff were very friendly and great at serving promptly. Got bumped into several times, some with apologies and some where the individuals were probably lacking in co-ordination due to intake. Overall didn't feel comfortable here, will not be rushing back which is a shame because the staff were very good.

Wetherspoon pubs can really vary but this one is really good. Decent cheap food, lots of variety. Drinks super cheap, much better value than most other pubs. Decor OK, same as most other wetherspoon pubs! Staff are nice and pleasant.

Yes it's a Weatherspoon pub - you know it's going to be reasonably priced but a restaurant rating is only ever based on three things, Food, Cost and Service - The food is reasonable both the others are excellent !

Great menu deals for cheap price. Each day they offer a different meal (such as fish, or curry or steak) that comes with all the trimmings and drink included for only about 6 pounds. The food and service were excellent. The "look" of the pub is great with dark tables; antique books in shelves and a nice looking bar.

I'm not sure that the previous reviewer, "Fuzzy M", has ever set foot in The Hatch. The toilets are upstairs, not down in the basement, for a start. Anyway, the lease on The Hatch is up for sale, as the landlord has been particularly avaricious in his demands during renewal negotiations. That's a real pity, as this place is way above your standard Wetherspoons pub: the staff are great, the clientele friendly and varied; the pub more a village local than a place just to get sloshed. Let's hope that JDW change their mind, although it does appear highly unlikely despite a petition with over 600 signatories and a Facebook campaign.

The Foxley Hatch is just another Wetherspoons pub that has a mile long walk to the toilet down a basement staircase like they all do and on the way you have to step aside for old boys that have just had their eighteenth pint and are seeing three of you. The best time to go into any Wetherspoon boozer is at 10am to see the proper hardened drinkers having their first (or second) breakfast pint. I usually opt for Stella but it always tastes old. That is why 'Spoons are cheap. That's what someone told me once. That 'Spoons buy barrels of beer that are near the sell by date. The clientele are a mixed bunch. Like their drinks. I always need a good few pints to tolerate a Wetherspoons pub. The amount of time you wait until you get served will require you take a colouring book. Or a novel, whilst you wait. Eventually a bored young bartender will meet your hearts desires and hand over said pint. Whether they have any spoons I don't know! Geddit!? groan, I know. Sorry.

Went here with a friend looking for a roast dinner. We were not disappointed. I had a chicken roast and my friend had a beef roast. Both dinners came with a pint. £6.75 each for the meal. Good value and very tasty. I hadn't realised how good these dinners were. Would definitely come back and I would recommend. The four stars is for the table clearance rather than the food

An easy pub to get a quick snack in.Great to drop in from work as we sometimes do, but probably because its in passing.Friendly enough, and as we are usually just women we don't feel awkward like some places you can go in and all eyes fall upon you as you enter the domain of MEN! ( yes even in this century )Meals are ok, nothing to shout about but prices reflect that.

On 8th December 2014 I pre booked a table for 15 family members for a Christmas meal that we were going to have on 21st December. As requested by the staff at the Foxley Hatch I gave to them at 11.45am on the 16th December a pre order of all the food that would be required at 12.00 on the 21st December so that the staff could order in the food in time. On arrival at 12.00 on the 21st December it soon became obvious that the staff were not prepared for our party. The excuse that a member of staff had not turned up was soon given by the person in charge. We waited over 1 hour for the starters to turn up at the table, but we were also told that despite pre ording the food 5 days earlier there was not enough Tomato soup as required. Also it turned out that there was no Christmas pudding for any of us despite pre ordering it. The children had Pasta Pomodoro instead of Christmas dinner but indicated that this was cold & undercooked. The person in charge offered a discount on the bill because of the various problems, but I offered less than this & only paid what I thought it was worth. What should have been a fun Christmas family meal was ruined by poor service!
