The Fox House in Kirklees

First review, felt I needed to as I've been here now a few times and never considered writing a review before but after reading some of the past reviews I felt it only fair to do so, new owners or not. Amazing views, lovely place with stylish decor. Food is excellent and staff are friendly and helpful, yes there are some young people working alongside more senior staff and thanks to places like this who can still employ them. Remember we all started somewhere! These places are few and far between now which is a sad sign of the times and we should support them before they all go!! Thank you to all involved at the Fox House.

Beautiful views / location. Just 10 minutes drive from Holmfirth. Carvery - Sunday Pretty good value. Service and expected quality for a chain restaurant. Lucky to think ahead as peak time and did book. Some people had some wait. Shows it was popular. Pleasant staff. Reading some reviews. Yes there are some very young staff, they did a good job. The manageress very pleasant. The “grumpy” chef, yes he could have been a bit friendlier, but he was busy. Good value carvery. Would return if wanting a reasonable chilled dinner.

Visited our second home (Fox House) tonight. Excellent food, great staff, very polite. Well done everyone. One word FANTASTIC

Tried to revisit after a few years of boy cotthing restaurant to find rude disinterested students running the show…. Food was actually nice however the customer service really let our experience down….. maybe customer service training or employ experienced staff that are polite,??,??

Visited on a Thurs night with friends. Attentive staff who served us immediately. Food menu was comprehensive and when it arrived the quality and quantity was brilliant Tasted amazing and so much food we had no room for puddings. My friend is coeliac and she was well catered for. A great night in beautiful surroundings, the pub is stunning.

Came here as a group and the food was nice but the chef serving the Sunday Carvery was quite rude when asked a question which really did put a sour taste in my mouth about the experience. Big portions of food .

Excellent mothers day meal. Was very busy but didn't affect the service, it was professional quick and the food was amazing. Lots of different dishes to choose from myself and hubby had Carvery but our friends had from the menu. All meals presented beautifully the table next to us had something that looked like a picture right out of a cook book, I love the plates BTW! Booking a party on the back of this visit. Thank you to all especially the Chef who took out booking who was very knowledgeable. X

Absolutely outstanding, the food was amazing, nothing is too much trouble and the pud is immaculate. We have been visiting them for over 30 years and it never disappoints. It’s a real credit to the team in these hard times. If you’ve never been it’s well worth the visit, and if you’ve not been for a while give them your support .

My wife and I met my daughter and 2 grandchildren at the restaurant. We had a pleasant evening and all enjoyed the food.

Went for Sunday carvery and wasn’t disappointed. I had mix of roast beef and pork, with Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Potatoes and loads of veg. Today the veg was carrots, peas, broccoli and Leeks in a cheese sauce. Add in a side of stuffing, apple sauce and lashings of gravy - winning. My partner had the liver and onions which was well cooked and came with onion rings, chips and vegetables. Really generous. We didn’t book, but would recommend it as it’s really popular and I think if you arrived later on you may not get a table

Lovely quaint restaurant. Cake for the Chinese night and was not disappointed. We had spring rolls with sweet and sour sauce, sesame prawn toast with hoisin sauce orange chilli chicken tossed with bean sprouts for starters. The orange chicken was the perfect mix of sweet and hot. There was a hot of chicken there too. The spring rolls had a lovely crunch to them but my favourite had to be the prawn toast. Made with full prawns they were everything you would want and more. For mains we had Crispy pork balls, Chicken curry and Beef in black bean sauce. All came with the choice of chips, rice or both and prawn crackers. The portions were large. The curry had a nice flavour to and the chicken was lovely and tender. The pork balls were Crispy and flavoursome but for me the favourite had to be the beef in black bean. The beef was so succulent, the sauce with it was amazing would definitely choose this again next time. The chips in my opinion are some of the best I have had. I'd prefer those any day over chip shop chips. I took a chocolate brownie home (yes they do cake to takeaway!) And that was the lovely balance of soft and crunchy. Could not fault it. From the price (£20 including start, main and a drink) to the staff and the food. Lovely experience would definitely come again. Thank you!

Tried the Chinese. What a feast! The prawn toast was amazing nothing like supermarket bought prawn toast - even had the tail. The beef in black bean was lovely. Massive portions. Staff nice and friendly. Views amazing.

Restaurant was clean and well presented. Good selection on the menu including vegan choices. Staff friendly and helpful. Only 1 person serving in the bar area which was quite slow. Food was well presented, large portions, crisp chips and the steak pie was so tender with plenty of steak. It was swimming in gravy, which was strange when it's served with mushy peas. A gravy boat would've been better. However, fabulous over all. The vegan pasta was literally made to order and very tasty. Scampi was crisp and plentiful. All served piping hot! A long wait at the end to pay as yet again only 1 person serving on, although several stood about. Would definitely recommend as it's great value.

Gorgeous as always. We've been coming here as a family for 40+ years and have NEVER had to complain about food or service. The carvery is second to non and always piping hot. A full selection of fresh veg and beautifully cooked meals available constantly. Hygienically served on to a plate for you by the staff who are so obliging if you ask for 'a bit more or that'. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they are always eager to please. Stunning surroundings inside and out.

Visited The Fox House on Thursday for lunch with friends and as always the service and food was 10/10 This place has to be one of my most favourite places to visit, the attention to detail is outstanding, quality of produce and cooking methods perfect and the service can't be matched We have been regular visitors over the last few years and will continue to be as well as recommending to anyone who will listen If you want looking after and a beautiful home cooked meal you won't find better than The Fox House

Had a lovely dinner here with family, delicious food, good portions and very reasonably priced. One of our party had an issue with their meal and the staff dealt with it very efficiently and in a genuinely caring manner. Couldn’t fault this place, friendly, helpful staff.

This is not our first time here and won’t be the last. We have been here numerous times on date nights, with family and with friends. Don’t know why I haven’t done a review before. Every trip here is wonderful, and today wasn’t an exception. Eveything , the location, the welcome, atmosphere, staff and food is always exceptional. There has been an increase in prices recently which is completely understandable and like most businesses, they took a hit with the pandemic but pleased to say that they always managed to keep standards high. Not had one bad meal at this place. Staff are always friendly, and helpful. One think that we remember is just after the pandemic, when social distancing was still a thing, and they had one way in and one way out, they allowed my blind father-in-law to use the same entrance so he didn’t have to navigate any steps. Its things like this that make all the difference. This is a great place with a lovely country pub atmosphere and top quality food and we will return again and again. If it was nearer to us we would go more often.

This was a Fathers Day treat for my elderly Dad and it was a really lovely treat! Dad is quite frail and the staff couldn’t have been more lovey - they treated him like royalty despite the restaurant being very busy We had the carvery-all the food was plentiful, freshly cooked and delicious with a good choice to suit everyone. There were 3 different meats which were very juicy and tasty. The Yorkshire puds were amazing as was the chocolate fudge cake Thanks to ALL the team for your wonderful service

This is a great place, food, decor, staff, setting all 5*+ Excellent Sunday lunch carvery was the best really tasty and good selection of vegetables and potatoes. Very smart chefs and staff. I always judge with the attention to the toilets and cleanliness and this place passed with flying colours, very nice toilets better than my house! It was busy but it is a large venue so room to move, hate being squashed up together. The desserts display was impressive and the cheesecake was beautiful. Big thanks to all will be back soon. Jane

Had Sunday lunch under covid restrictions. Compliments on the way it's being run and the great car very we had. Front of house in control, staff helpful and at-tentative and food was excellent.

(Contrary to a recent report on TripAdvisor this pub is open for business as usual as of my visit on Sep 18th)I first visited this pub in August 1977 for my mum's birthday (when a 3 course meal for 2 adults and 3 children was only around £24 in total inclusive of a drink). At that time, pubs were only beginning to serve full meals and I recall that this pub was the nearest to my home to offer these (I'm from Deepcar, about 8 miles away).Perhaps I only visit now about once every 2 years or so, but I have fond memories of many meals and family celebrations held here over the years. The pub has been in the current owner's family since the mid-1980s and despite the closure of many pubs in this very rural area (the Flouch, Stanhope Arms, Pratty Flowers and Victoria are all now closed) - this pub has been like a beacon of consistency to me.The pub has had it's ups and downs over the years, such as the 2018 temporary closure due to a frozen pipe burst causing a lot of damage. However, this pub is a local institution, a world away from the soulless carvery chains and deserves it's success.Indeed many of the staff have worked there a long time and I recognised many of them from visits 5 years or so ago.Since the end of the recent Covid lockdown - visits to pubs are very important to me from a mental health viewpoint. Indeed this pub felt very safe - they are very strict on procedures such as hand sanitisation, visors for staff etc and the floor area is very big making social distancing easy.The staff were very attentive without being overbearing and waiting times were very reasonable. Indeed it is obvious that the pub has many local customers. On this occasion I ordered Farmhouse Grill for £13.95 (consisting of pork steak, sausage, liver, bacon, chicken fillet, mushrooms, grilled tomato, onion rings,egg and proper chips). This was nicely cooked and the pork steak was very tender and cooked to perfection. Perhaps the only minor criticism is that I could do without the metal baskets and brown chip paper on the plate which detracted rather than added to the presentation in my view. Dessert was a very warming jam sponge with lashings of custard - a little old school but very good nonetheless and very reasonably priced at £5.95.There were only 2 ales available, much less choice than normal but at least they were locally sourced. This is entirely understandable given the reduced level of custom which I'm sure will soon improve.i will try to visit this pub again very soon, maybe in the next few weeks.

Post Covid the Fox House is only open Friday to Sunday and with much shortened hours but it hasn't changed the quality of food. We went for Sunday lunch on a beautiful sunny Sunday, having booked a table in advance, which we know is necessary to get Sunday lunch! The one way in and another out and controlled access to the carvery worked well overall. Service however was very hit and miss which is unusual - but understandable under current conditions. We waited for nearly ten minutes before our food and drink order was taken - you are not allowed to order at the food area like days gone by. We then had another ten minute wait before being told it was our turn to approach the carvery. The restaurant was barely half full as they are managing the timings of seating to ensure maximum space inside and it works well.The food was delicious, piping hot and served with a smile and friendly chat by the server on the carvery. Every member of staff wore plastic masks and gloves and tables were sanitised the moment diners left the restaurant. We felt very safe and thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday lunch.Very happy it survived !!!

We booked the restaurant at this lovely pub for a special double celebration. 20 of us attended and no one was disappointed. In fact everyone was so impressed with the quality of the food they cannot wait to come to Holmfirth again to have another visit. The only thing and it cannot b e classed as a criticism is the quantity of food on offer. No one left hungry.

So this has been a super amazing favourite place of mine for a while, the food has always been brilliant... however, I’ve recently gone vegan and my only comment is more vegan options required to make it outstanding for me again!I just reduced my normal 5 review to a 3, purely because of this. I had the choice of a couple of vegan mains when I visited, I chose the Thai stir fry. Don’t get me wrong it was nice ... but I’m used to exceptional here ... so I’d really like something that stands out for us vegans.I cook all manner of vegan food at home, my mixed bean & pepper stew is gorgeous as is my shepherds pie, vegan food doesn’t have to be limited to the same tried & tested meals and as more and more people wake up to Veganism (not going to preach!), it’s the places that have amazing vegan menus that will draw the crowds. Just for the record I’d have been ecstatic with an Impossible burger on a vegan brioche bun with violife ‘cheese’ and some onions and chips .. and for afters .. a dairy free ice cream would have been perfect My non vegan mate had the Sunday roast and she loved it

This was my first time Eating at the Fox House and it didn't disappoint!I had some Family come up from Peterborough to Sheffield and I booked a table for 8 People on 29/2/20 which was a Saturday Evening.We Sat and Ate in the Bar Area and even though it was very busy we got served promptly and all our Food arrived in good time and most importantly all 8 People commented on how good the Food was.Myself and my Father had the Large Mixed Grill for our Mains which is definitely a Meal for those with a Big appetite! The Meal was all cooked perfectly and was Quality and well worth the money.Also the Pub was very Cosy, Clean and the Staff where polite, Welcoming and attentive.I will without a doubt be visiting again in the Future.Thank you for such a pleasant evening.

I visited with my family for a early evening dinner. We took drinks in the bar and then off to a table just after. Everyone was so friendly, i love the way the place is set up with these little nooks and crannies, the furniture, the fire and the food.. most importantly. Great portions, really tasty, children well catered for and really reasonable. I'll be back.

We have been coming to the Fox House for many years. We have celebrated birthdays & other special occasions here. The reason we keep coming back is the way we are looked after from the moment we walk in to when we leave. The food is always delicious & well presented & the service is always first class. Even when they are busy they are always consistent with how they look after everyone. Our latest family visit was no different. Well done & keep up the good work guys.

Very disappointing. No service to tables, have to go to bar for any drinks and carvery to order food. Food average. Service very poor, waiter didn’t know what the dish was he was serving. Will never be visiting again.

We booked the restaurant for my wife’s 60th birthday for 41 guests. From start to finish we received a totally professional service. In the planning stages both Tracy and Richard were excellent with ideas and suggestions for the menu, drinks and seating. On the actual night we had the most wonderful time with fabulous food and drink matched with great service. We cannot thank Mick, Tracy, Richard and all the staff at the Fox House enough for a most memorable evening, all 41 of us loved it. We would totally recommend the Fox House.

Had a family meal Saturday and food was outstanding, everyone left very satisfies. Amazing value for money. Excellent service, was packed but still found us a table. Will be visiting regular from now on.

Dined here yesterday afternoon for the first time and we were impressed. First impressions: cosy and inviting surroundings as we were greeted by an attentive staff member. We sat in a quieter area so we weren’t underneath a speaker. After ordering food and drinks at separate areas the food arrived in a timely manner and was beautifully presented. An excellent variety of well prepared vegetables on the plate to balance out the main item - in my case salmon (easy to overcook but it was perfect), my partner chose the liver which was equally well presented and cooked. Our only word of caution would be that if you are a small eater (we are) the plate size is substantial so may be a little overfacing if you don’t have much of an appetite. However, my partner couldn’t quite manage all her liver but it was no trouble for the staff to wrap in foil to take home. All in all the staff and quality of food were excellent and we have no qualms about giving The Fox House our full recommendation - they clearly have a great kitchen and know exactly what they’re doing.

This is a restaurant where i have often dined however on this occasion was disappointed. One is not encouraged to 'drink and drive' however the price of a pint of orange 'cordial' at this establishment is in my opinion excessive and could be considered extortionate...i believe my understanding to be correct when i say the provision of water with your meal is free ...but here if you have it with cordial..Orange in my case ...a pint costs a whopping £1.90 !!!..perhaps i will have a drink and get a cab next time !

I have been here many times including Christmas Day. However it’s my first time since it’s refurb about 3 years ago. I went on a Sunday for the Carvery, I can’t believe how popular it still is. There was about a 15 minute wait but only because fresh meat and Yorkshire puddings were coming out. The Carvery choice usually has 2-3 meat choices and about 6 sides of vegetables. Additional gravy is a must if you like your dinner swimming in the stuff. My husband ordered off the menu, which was lamb chops. This came with chips, onion rings, vegetables and gravy which he ate while I queued for the Carvery. The menu choice has basics ie chilli, lasagne, curry, hunters chicken, steak but check out the specials board behind the till. It has a great selection of desserts which we couldn’t manage as we were too full. The bar has wine, beer, lager, cider and spirits plus the usual soft drinks. If you open a tab you have to leave your bank card behind the full and they give you a card for extra ordering. It gets really busy in a Sunday, if it’s just two or three people risk it and just go up. If it’s a larger group I would book. They have a good size car park but people do park on the road. It’s a nice place to visit all year round and the staff are helpful. Our meal cost £27 for two mains which is worth it for the quality

firstly id like to comment on the bar staff and waiting staff all you guys were very helpful and welcoming. as soon as we got there a very helpful lady (tracey) was taking guests coats then we was greeted by richard with the fizz in the first 10 mins of being there. amazing service you guys..

Our Sunday Treat is to meet our friends and have a meal at the Fox houses. Its a way from our houses and we pass a number of other restaurants on the way. This has been our regular Sunday evening meal for some years now. Way always here ? Because the meal is always excellent we see the same faces every week and have a chat and the staff are aways obliging and friendly ( On first name terms with them all). After eating here for well over 5 Years and never having a complaint. I cannot recommend you enough to try having a meal here. Two things to remember though. Firstly to avoid disappointment book as it gets full. Secondly be hungry as the meals are very generous.

Mixed review!!!! Firstly the food was top notch... I had hunters chicken and the meat was soft moist and full of flavour... so instead of a negative review the good and staff saved it... staff friendly... but “behind” the scenes staff that kept popping out of the kitchen appeared stressed and rude to colleagues...

Me and my family came up to the Fox House today,the food was amazing and great value for money. It was all fresh and when we asked the manager we were told that all the food was local produce supporting other small businesses. The service was great, they are all really friendly. We will deffinitly be going back.

Sunday evening meal treat for family. Friendly staff wonderful choice of food on menu for all tastes. Our party was of mixed ages and all were happy with their respective choices. Food was freshly and well cooked and well presented. Well done for a well run enterprise. I couldn't find fault. One word covers review PERFECTION

Well mums birthday was a very special treat today.our first visit to the fox house pub was without doubt the best decision we could have made.wonderful food great value and the staff were so kind thoughtful and pleasant.would highly recommend and will definitely be booking again soon.thank you foxhouse staff for making our mums birthday so memorable.

I have visited the Fox House quite a few times and always had amazing food and amazing service. I am normally served by a very tall gentleman and I've left a review before saying just how excellent his level of service is.

I arrived on Saturday evening (9th of November) having tried elsewhere which was vastly overpriced, the restaurant was very busy at 8pm as expected. The manager informed me that food service would be around 45 minutes and gave me the choice to wait which I did. Shortly after buying a round of drinks he informed me that he had suspended orders to the kitchen to give them a chance to catch up after a sudden surge, I expressed my disappointment and he explained the situation and I agreed to continue to wait. Within five minutes he returned to take our order as promised. Our food arrived quicker than expected and the portions were huge. The food tasted fabulous and was piping hot, the staff were obviously very busy but calm and polite. The manager returned to check everything was to our liking and that we were happy. The menu is varied and not expensive, this is after all a restaurant. I happily recommend the Fox House to anyone looking for great food at good prices in comfortable surroundings.

My family and I went 2 days ago. Excellent food. plenty of choice. All freshly cooked. Big portions, I had a vegetarian meal which was very tasty and presented with finesse. I highly recommend this place to eat. Recommend pre booking as it gets very busy.

Popped in for an early meal. There were choices for an early bird menu that sounded good but we chose from the main menu. There were lots of regular customers there who were greeted courteously by Richard. We had really good food in comfy surroundings. Another good meal here though I have never managed to have a pudding.... The portions are big.

We've been going to the Fox House for many years, it's like our second home, tried different restaurants and always return, very good traditional cooked food, not arty farty food GOOD HOMELY FOOD, would highly recommend, great owners,chefs & restaurant/bar staff. keep up the very good work.

We have been to this restaurant pub for years may be even 19 on off when ever we need good food or a get together with family or friends used it for birthdays Christmas any reason for a get together. I can say if I want some decent food we always go there.

Great restaurant, love love love the fox house. Any special occasion we go here. To avoid disappointment We do book in advance tho as it’s a very popular place. The meals are gorgeous, sometimes we wait but they are freshly cooked, so we don’t mind, prefer to wait than to be served straight away with warmed up food. If I wanted warmed up food I would go else where. Excellent service from the bar and the waitresses.

Visited here for a quick tea on Saturday night. The staff sorted a table for us straight away regardless of all the reserved tables. Food arrived swiftly, absolutely huge portions and delicious. Proper home cooked food. Being in the same industry, trying to find another establishment that offers home cooked food at good prices is very hard to find. Well done Fox House. Keep up the good work!! We’ll be back.
