This is a really nice pub. The staff and regulars are friendly and it has an interesting "edge" by being closely associate with the garrison. Nice interior, clean bogs and a good selection of beer,

It’s been at least three years since I last visited the Fox and Fiddler. I was never what you might call a “regular”, but used to drop by for a lunchtime drink every couple of months or so. I stopped going because I disliked the refurbishment which replaced a lot of the old furniture with a lot of inappropriate new stuff. I have to say that I didn’t like it any better this time. The beer was very good, though, with Mighty Oak’s Captain Bob and Oscar Wilde Mild and the Colchester Brewing Company’s Metropolis on draught. Service was also friendly and efficient, and prices competitive (except with Wetherspoons, of course). The pub was clean and tidy. I was the only customer (I think it was just after midday in midweek when I left), which was surprising, all things considered. While, in my opinion, the furnishings really jar with the old building (- not just ill-assorted in style, but not even arranged in a way to make them fit ergonomically -) and make it hard to feel at ease, the much busier Purple Dog a few minutes closer to the city centre isn’t much better. The Fox and Fiddler is basically a good pub spoiled by a bad refurbishment. I prefer to walk a little further out of the city centre to the Fat Cat or the Odd One Out for a more congenial environment.

Very rude staff on and off duty, male staff member behind bar quite abrupt when told that last orders were up. Member of staff not on duty very abusive when I pointed out staff member on duty's tone of voice was not acceptable. No wonder pub was quiet if that how staff treat customers. Absolutely appalling!

When you walk into a pub and staff start to roll their eyes at you,you know this is the pub that will make you feel really welcome, but if the staff have got a problem with me,then just bring the problem to my face,i will never lose this battle..ha ha ha

put money in jukebox and the barman/landlord turned them off telling me some of the songs are short i heard 5 seconds of 1 and a couple of minutes of the other, i said lets leave and he became annoyed with us as i explained we heard a man at bar say don't forward this one it's mine, so it was obvious what he had done, with this he then offered to me my money back, but we left. there are plenty of places in colchester with much better service.

After visiting quite few dubious establishments it was refreshing to venture into a clean, decent friendly pub. The staff were welcoming and friendly and the clientele were all chatty and happy. Shame we only found it on our last night!

The whole pub is decked out with Paratrooper pictures, berets and anything connected to the towns 2nd and 3rd battalion. However, there is no clannish or dismissive atmosphere in fact the very opposite. Good pint and comfortable seats. Pool table in the back and small outside area for smokers.

I had just been asked to leave to drink up and leave The Purple Dog because I had been wrongly informed that dogs were allowed on the patio. I then came across The Fox and Fiddler. As normal I asked if my four legged friend could come in and was told in a most welcoming manner that she was. The young man serving promptly asked me if she would like bowl of water, I then enjoyed a couple of pints of Mighty Oak served in excellent condition. I am a member of CAMRA and a local beer club and would thoroughly recommend the pub and beer

We visit this pub a fair bit, usually with our Dutch friends, we play some music from the duke box and have a great time, good searing along with good beer. Overall a great location and good pun to get watered up

Full of Para reg. great if you're into that sort of thing. Has drinks. A toilet. Everything you'd expect from a drinking establishment.

This pub always has a fairly good choice of real ales, including from local or regional breweries. Friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere but can be a bit noisy, at times. Not somewhere I'd want to spend a whole evening out, but good for a couple of pints. People-watching through the window facing Head Street in the evening can be entertaining!

The Fox & Fiddler is a wonderful pub. Formerly known as The Bodaciea and The Headgate before that. Situated in the garrison town of Colchester in Essex the pub benefits from original tudor beam work and design. The establishment also benefits from a beer garden affectionately known as 'The Lady Garden'. The selection of beers and ales are more than ample to satisfy the most seasoned of drinkers. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Particularly impressive was their recollection of my previous visit and drinks ordered. Also they have a jukebox which I always consider a crowd pleaser. One more point to make is that the establishment has been known to be a 'squaddie pub' i.e. it is frequented by service (army) personnel. In all my visits to the Fox I have only ever met pleasant and friendly patrons always willing to engage in conversation and a laugh. All in all a wonderful place full fun and life.

This is a great pub with many good beers. It also does good, home cooked food. It is frequented by the Parachute regiment, which is a big plus in my opinion.

I've been there on several occasions just for some drinks and it's a very good pub. I drank some pints of Guinness and tasted the local Ales and the atmosphere is really ok.I've never eaten there but I may do it in the future. It's quite central but a little bit tucked away from the chaos at the same time. I suggest it for some drinks after an afternoon of shopping.

Arrived at the pub at 5pm. No Moretti or Madri due to apparently running the stock down. Then went to sit at a table in the restaurant only to be told all the tables were booked and I needed to go to the other side. Sat down with no menus. Asked for a menu at the bar and waited 5 mins to be served however a regular who came up to the bar after me got served before me. Decided then not to bother with the steak meal I was going to order and left. Attitude of staff absolutely dreadful. I’ve been to the Rovers Tye on a few occasions and always enjoyed it. Perhaps it was due to being a Sunday so I will return.
