Nice little room on the upper floor of a pub not far from the center. Friendly welcome, clean and with the exception of a cooling option, everything you need is available + working. However, I would advise against booking breakfast in advance if you are not entirely sure that you can stick to the earliest possible time of 9:00. No refund!

actually kind of gutted because we had sunday roast there last weekend and for a large (which was huge) we paid £13.50 and this weekend the same meal was now £17.50. so disappointed, its gone from my favourite place ever to really annoying me in the space of a week, just another typical annoying unnecessary price increase, I was going to go there for sunday roast every week but not any more, so infuriating.

This was a really lovely place to stay, really warm and cosy, such a nice clean and airy room with a nice window and situated on the edge of town so it wasn't noisy at all and only a couple of minutes walk in to town. There was also a car park right next door so that was handy. It was a very good price too. The staff were very friendly and helpful too, they couldn't have been any genuinely nicer. We will definitely stay here again next time we are down that way.

We booked The Fountain Tavern for a one night stay very last minute on Booking.com. We weren't sure what to expect and we were delighted by the friendliness of the staff and cleanliness of our room. A very thoughtful touch was the addition of instant porridge in our room as breakfast is an additional cost. We had breakfast and my omelette was amazing, it was huge and very tasty. The Full English breakfasts looked like masterpieces! Raymond obviously takes pride in his cooking and it really shows. I would definitely recommend this as a place to stay in Penzance.

Ray and Sarah have been running the pub for around a year now and what a turnaround. Gone are the drab colours to be replaced with a bright and airy colour scheme. All the staff are extremely friendly and engage in a bit of banter when they have time. You even get an occasional smile out of the ‘Grumpy Old Cornishman’ also known as Ray or the Landlord. The prices are very fair, not quite Wetherspoons prices, but not far off and the quality of the beer is second to none. The atmosphere has changed dramatically over the last 12 months since the previous owners left: all for the better. I’ve never stayed in the rooms so can’t comment, but the food and beer is excellent - and that’s the reason I frequent this establishment more than any other in Penzance. I’ve held off writing a review for a while to see if The Fountain Tavern keeps improving and I’m pleased to say it’s getting even better now that they have established both good local and passing/holiday trade. Try it and be impressed.

Well, we all certainly ate enough to feed ten men over quarry.....(old Cornish saying meaning we ate a lot) This is our first time eating at the Fountain since taken over by new management which are local people & it was a brilliant Christmas meal, atmosphere & generally a fantastic time had by all. There were things to do on the table from wooden Christmas tree decks to colour & write on to take home, a shiney ball with your name & date on to keep to mark the occasion, excellent, friendly service & enough to eat for a week! Nothing was too much trouble.. Ray & Sarah have turned this pub around & we will all be definitely going again to eat. Thanks to all for making our Christmas Day a brilliant one xx

1st time back after changed hands as very disappointed under old management. Cant fault the friendliness of the manager & staff. We were a bit disappointed with the food.5 of us ordered scampi & chips, which we got 6 scampi each, thought a little sparse, came with skinny fries and some basic salad.I can only assume there wasn’t enough scampi to fill 5 plates? I love my deserts and after a small main i was looking forward to a nice desert. The choice was ice-cream or ice-cream or sticky toffee pudding.3 of us went for the pudding, which were individual microwaved like the ones on the shelf in the supermarket. The pub is fine, very friendly and I’ve heard the roasts on Sunday are very good. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day?

Just to correct a couple of bad reviews left in July, the people in question left a pooey nappy on the floor under the table, ground blueberries and other food into the seat and were very offensive when asked to clean their mess up. She couldn't eat it and they knew it was a problem but didn't offer anything off. I couldn't be bothered to argue so bully for me. My steak wasn't the best either. Didn't taste like it was seasoned properly and was quite watery. A real shame because the staff were very friendly. Probably wouldn't go back. I have previously posted a glowing review of The Fountain, but following our last four or five visits, and the experience of friends who we had recommended to try here, I feel it is time for an update. We had avoided the place for a few months due to repeated awful experiences. What always happened was that we would be accosted by one or a group of very drunk, and often intimidating, patrons. I don't mean physically assaulted. We usually sit outside, being smokers, this often makes us vulnerable to being talked/sworn at by some unsavoury characters. This probably makes me sound like a snob. I am not worried about that. I have no problem at all with people drinking and enjoying themselves, I do have an issue with being insulted and feeling intimidated. We did visit recently, spurred on by the death of a friend whose local pub this had been when he lived in Penzance. We wanted to raise a glass n his honour. The bar was empty except for a noisy group of a dozen or so who, we found out, had just been to a family funeral. I asked for my usual coffee and was told "the kettle is broken". Really? It seemed far more likely that the man behind the bar didn't want to be faffing around when he had a number of customers that perhaps he wasn't used to managing. The funeral group did consume a considerable amount but were mostly fine, a couple of times things kicked off, always outside, but calmed again quickly. I have absolutely no problem with these people. I do have issue with being (probably) lied to and fobbed off at the bar, with no apology. We left with our friends after a couple of hours, I very much doubt that we'll be back. A shame as it had been a favourite in Penzance.

We booked a table for 12.30. We had a very pleasant waitress. There there 6 of but it took nearly an hour to get served. I chose scallops. Unfortunately, when I got home a few hours later I was very ill. When I rang the following day to tell them in case they had a bad batch, they said it was unlikely and that I probably had an allergy to them I have eaten all types of fish most of my life. I was also told that the scallops were very pale because they had been grilled and not fried. As far as I am aware I was the only one of our party to be ill, but then I was the only person to have had the scallops. I personally will not be returning to this establishment.

The Fountain are the first BOLD enough to use the word Vegan on their menu boards in Penzance and have it in large lettering confidently advertised outside their establishment. Dave, one half of management/proprietors was very accommodating when I asked if I could have the "burger" without the bun. He thoughtfully offered a gluten free alternative bun which I agreed to as long as it had no palm oil/fat in it. But if it did, then I would have the "burger" on it's own with extra chips instead, if that was ok.Like the emperor's clothing, I was forced to employ some rather dramatic imagination regards to their idea of a portobellow mushroom burger which did make me giggle. As they say, 'a spade is a spade' and this was most definitely a fat mushroom looking up at me with chips, some rocket and finely chopped onion. Now admittedly, I'm not a chef or cook, but I don't think you would have to qualify for either to engage a little common sense, possibly the tomato sauce on top of my orphan mushroom COULD have had a mate on top to sandwich it in, I'm sure it would not have put them in the red to spare an extra shroom.Having said that, it was surprisingly delicious and I think I prefer it to a regular Vegan burger but maybe allow a lonesome mushroom at least the company of another. Just an idea :)After inquiring if they served a Vegan pudding option, I was tempted to ask if they could put a fruit salad together, but I decided to wait and see if their cook/chef would use their initiative. The answer was no. After my plate of chips, mushroom and rocket leaves, it actually gave me an appetite, so I ordered a small portion of their taco's with beans and melted "Vegan" scheese on top. It was served with regular dairy cheese, so I asked to see the packaging as it tasted exactly like what it was.I think its important though to cut them some slack as they are obviously getting used to Vegan food, and they ARE the first to have the courage to dip their toes in the plant based ocean and anyone can make a mistake, though I'm relieved they didn't serve up any dead animals..."accidentally" :D cuz I may have thrown up.After pointing it out, Dave replaced it for me.Over all, I found the food simple, tasty cuisine and hands down they serve the tastiest nacho's I've ever had. I asked if they were homemade. Dave confirmed they were. And just in case he had misunderstood or heard me wrong, I later asked again if they were homemade, which again he confirmed. They also offer a Vegan vegetable curry with rice and salad.Thank you guys for including three Vegan options on your menu. 3 adults and 3 children visited for a Sunday evening meal. We arrived just before 6, and were told that food was available from 6, so we waited. Our order was taken, (3 fish and chips, 2 children's chicken meals, and one pasta and grated cheese) and then we waited...and waited... and waited. They had apparently run out of pasta, but instead of telling us, and asking our grandson to choose something else, the waitress went off to Tesco (unknown to us!) to buy some. Our meal eventually came at around 10 past 7. We had not walked out, although we were very tempted! The food was OK, but my grandson's pasta was inedible - congealed cheese and half-cooked pasta. He made a valiant attempt to eat it, but was defeated. How can any chef not be able to cook pasta and grated cheese? We asked for the bill, expecting at least a bit to be taken off it as we had waited so long, but no...the whole bill was just put down on the table, with no apology. We refused to pay for the inedible pasta, and at that point the cost of our drinks was also taken off. What really annoyed me was that at no point were we offered an apology, neither did anyone explain to us what was happening. I have thought long and hard before writing this, as we may just have been unlucky, and had someone, anyone, apologised properly, I would have been more forgiving. We will not be eating there again!

We were delighted with the menu in this tavern but sadly the food did not live up to our expectations. The waitress appeared to be new and did not know the answer to any of our questions. However some of the bar staff and those drinking at the bar were very helpful. We would have been more understanding if the waitress had smiled or tried to be more helpful. There was also some confusion between whether our order was off specials list or from menu - we were not asked to clarify at the time of ordering and so the wrong meal appeared for one of our party (at higher price). The vegetable soup was very disappointing and looked more like porridge. Altogether a very disappointing meal.

On Wednesdays they do 2-4-1 on mains between 5pm and 9pm, so our meal for three came to under £45 (4 mains, 4 pints and a dessert). Also: Best sticky toffee pudding I've ever had.

We went here on the way to watch the new bond film as it was close to the cinema and the place we had planned to eat at was closed. What a nice surprise. The lady who served us was just lovely and managed to do both the bar and waiting together. Really friendly. Very good value wine and the food was all home made right down to the coleslaw which is a good sign. Nice burger. Excellent lamb tagine. I've been coming to Penzance for years and never been here. We will be returning. £5.50 for a large glass of Chablis is really good value.

Wonderfully looked after, lovely food, all three courses, great find, coming back in the week, the chef even cleared our plates, such a rarity these days to have home cooked food and served with a smile, lovely little place with a great atmosphere, thank you for my best evening of the week!!

Staff very friendly and helpful. By the time we got here the menu had reduced a little and I couldn't find anything I liked but the staff checked with the chef and they cooked me up something else which was just amazing. We both had fish cakes for starters which were so light and tasty with gorgeous tartar sauce. I then had vegetable linguine and oh had lamb tagine. Both were full of fresh ingredients and lovely herbs, spices and great flavours. This place beats our most favourite restaurant at home and that's a tall order!

Off the Town centre, navigate your way through the shopping street CausewayheadThe Tavern greets you at the end of the gentle inclineIf the outside was welcoming with its clean-cream front and samll garden area, then inside is balanced with the usual pub front with a rear non-windowed dining areaThe food did take time from ordering but enjoyed a very good presentation, with well cooked chciken'n' chips nice salad with a tomato dipNot bad, not bad at all

The staff are warm and friendly but this place is a vastly overpriced hostel. My room had a broken window mended with cellotape, was grubby and smelly, despite a half hearted recent paint job. Breakfast consisted of a cool bag left outside the room containing cheap and processed rubbish. Paid £75 a night for this - £30 would have been about right. Avoid!

My boyfriend and I called last night to see if we needed to book a table, we were told there was no need so we headed down. When we arrived the staff were waiting for is which was very nice, they helped us with parking as we had parked in a private area, they told my boyfriend where to park so we didn't have to pay. We were the only ones in the restaurant as it was quite early 6.30pm for dinner. I had the pate which was lovely, my boyfriend had the king prawn linguine to start which was very good. I had a beef burger and my boyfriend had the Cajun burger, we were both very impressed with the food, the home made relish was lovely and the staff couldn't do enough for you. We had been out early that morning so by the time we had finished dinner we were ready for heading back to our campsite in St Austell. Would definately recommend. For both meals and drinks it cost £40.00 which wasn't bad at all. Will come again if we come down again.

Truly this is Penzance's hidden gem, the food is fabulous. My husband had steak, our son the seafood tagliatelle and I had the vegetable lasagna - they were all delicious, made fresh and great service. Couldn't ask for more, a great night! Thanks to the guys at The Fountain, we'll be back!

Needed a place to stay and managed to get a double en suite for 85 gbp.Very friendly welcome payment taken everything explained and taken to a nice spacious room. Everything was clean and tidy.Being above a pub and football being on we thought it would be loud but even with the window open it wasn't bad we only really heard a few people waiting for a taxi but had the window been closed it would have been silent so that was good.Didn't eat in the restaurant but ordered some snacks chips and garlic bread for the room which was nice and waitress were friendly.Now.. breakfast .. we arrived in the restaurant was sat waiting to see a member of staff for 15 minutes but whilst I helped my self to cereals it was clear the staff seemed more intredted in the chefs sex life than serving the customers as you could hear everything. Finally managed to order a coffee and a tea.. another 5 minutes later still no coffee But the waitress came to take the breakfast order. . Ordered it but realised she forgot her pad went and got it and finally ordered breakfast with some white toast.Another 5-7 minutes coffee finally arrived and 15 minutes later the breakfast last but not least the toast came. The breakfast was very nice although we were starving after waiting so long .. and we also managed to find out that the staff sometimes wake up in the morning not wanting to be there I could write a boom about their lives to be honest. ..Anyway. Overall a nice stay but please sort the breakfast service out there were k ly 2 tables.

Only stayed for one night, staff were friendly and the room clean and comfy and basic! I didn't know I'd paid for their basic room but we didn't mind as we only stayed over night. Parking was a bit of a nightmare but we sorted it out. The food was delicious the breakfast was lovely and tasted just as nice. It's a short walk to the main sea front and has nice views of St michaels mount. Sadly our room overlooked the kitchen roof so that wasn't so nice but my children found the baby seagulls entertaining

Excellent hotel experience. The deep carpet was soothing to the feet after long walks. The bed was comfy. The shower was hot. Service was excellent. The restaurant downstairs provided excellent breakfasts each morning. They even do a perfect "blue" steak at dinner. Perfect location. Little road noise if at all. Quiet regulars in the pub below. The owner was present, polite, and enthusiastic. Worth the price. 10/10 would go again.

Chanced across this place while pondering where to eat that evening. Went in for a drink to discuss and ended up staying for tea! I had red snapper which was absolutely gorgeous. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and the lady behind the bar was so friendly and attentive, especially to our 5 year old son. He was provided with colouring sheets and crayons and had a tomato and cheese pasta which he greatly enjoyed. Highly recommend this place.

A lovely pub with friendly staff and great food. Ticked all our boxes as the dog was made very welcome too - we ate here twice during a two week holiday in Penzance and it was much better than some other much more expensive places we tried locally.

Booking was nice and straightforward over the phone with a follow up email to confirm. We arrived an hour before check in. This was no problem for the staff. They gave us the extra bed we needed and we wet out for the day. We came back for dinner at 7.30 and were fed by 8pm. The food tasted like it had been cooked to order and they gave us nibbles to go with our drinks whilst we waited. The food was great and the bill was very reasonable for decent tapas. We slept well and the Full English was spot on. They even offered to look after our bags for the day as we were leaving by train in the evening. Overall, they were extremely accommodating and clearly wanted to offer value for money.

I had a beautiful Sunday roast here very very tasty I came with my family 2 children and 5 adults everyone loved the food and I have to say the staff were fantastic ! Just as my 2 year old was testing the boundaries and had tired of all the toys that I had brought along for him ( as they do !) A lovely lady came to my rescue with a sticker book and crayons ! Thank you ! After our lunch we were offered deserts and we all decided to indulge ! They were fabulous ! From the sticky toffee pudding the Eton mess and the frozen cheesecake everyone was very happy ! When it came to paying the bill we were pleasantly surprised the total was little over £80 for all 7 us ! We will definatly be back again !

Recently had a meal here with a few friends and it was a mixture of yay and nay. The pub itself and atmosphere was nice and with a very modern/clean interior certainly has a great look to it. The main I had was a bit so so (and a few others also had similar feelings for theirs) but others really enjoyed their meals (and also they looked very nice). The burger looked good, which is always a plus for me (shame I moved off my default option!). Overall the food is quite decent so would happily come back again.

Absolutely wonderful visit. The cream tea was the best I think I’ve ever had. Warm scones, huge pot of cream and delicious jam, must be homemade. The tea was piping hot and came with an additional tea bag should you like it strong.

What a gem! We had no idea where to go for lunch but chose the shed; a great choice! The steak was so good and the sole cooked to perfection. Great wine, appetisers and dessert to boot. Fantastic value and the service was great Thank you so much.

Wish we had read other reviews first! Very disappointed, outside of hotel and views lovely inside tired and dated. Greeted by a sign on the main entrance explaining to go around the back of the building and ringing to be eventually answered by a polite but rather eerie character. There was no bar on offer over the whole weekend and no dinner available as he wasn't sure if his mother had been shopping!! Unfortunately the bathroom wasn't clean and the breakfast average. On the morning of leaving we received an email to say payment had been taken and we saw no one as we left, a very odd way to run a hotel business!
