Before visiting Tintern Abbey we decided to find a good pub in the area. The Fountain Inn is just lovely, off the beaten track through beautiful woods with a stream alongside the road. It is an atmospheric 17th century pub with a roaring log fire and a great menu, it was difficult to choose as there was a fantastic range of food and very good value too. We were really pleased with the food we had, it was cooked to perfection, steak and duck just as we’d asked, a good selection of perfectly cooked fresh vegetables, delicious potato rosti and dauphinois. They even make their own bread which is a treat and we really enjoyed the ales they have. The lady who served us was lovely, very warm and friendly, she couldn’t have been more hospitable and welcoming. It was our wedding anniversary so thanks to the Fountain Inn for making it a very memorable one!

After visiting Tintern Abbey we needed sustenance and luckily had booked a table at the Fountain. A charming little low beamed pub,log fires crackling invitingly, our table was tucked in a nook and we took our seats. Our meals soon arrived, both Sunday roasts, mine being a gluten free chicken with all the trimmings bar the yorkie. Gorgeous food, simple and full of flavour with the best crispy roast potatoes. We,just about, had room for dessert, mine a gluten free roulade and my partner had a wonderfully indulgent Eton Mess. Washed it all down with a glorious pint of local bitter and the bill was extremely reasonable. Well worth an hours drive for us and we will be back, and hungry, very soon. Thank you to all the staff and charming owners. Super little pub.

We visited this thriving country pub whilst on holiday, on the recommendation of a local landowner, and we were highly impressed. Wednesdays are “pie and pint night” and great value it is, too! All the food was home-cooked, absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked and served. I had the mixed German sausage and mixed bean pie, and my wife chose the wild mushroom and garlic pie. There was plenty of choice on the menu, including vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free options, and a great selection of desserts. As a CAMRA member, I was delighted to find four real ales on handpump. The welcome was friendly, the service efficient and we will definitely eat here again. A pub not to be missed.

We visited the pub after a very difficult journey and the beer and the wine were excellent and the welcome and music pleasant. We decided to book Sunday lunch. The pub was full but the service was efficient and friendly. The lunch arrived very soon and was excellent. There were 7 vegetables, good meat (not pre-packed slices) and nothing over or under-done which given the number of customers was brilliant. The desserts were excellent too. We then booked an evening meal. My husband can't eat certain things and his meal was adjusted accordingly- including three different coloured and beautifully cooked long carrots! I had an extremely imaginative, healthy and flavoursome honeyed chicken with different coloured baby tomatoes, pinenuts and plenty of healthy finely chopped vegetables. I would love to find food as good as this in London!

We visited without making a booking on a Thursday evening. There were 3 cars in the car park. Pub had 3 maybe 4 tables full and a couple reserved but plenty of space otherwise. Asked the landlord if we could eat and we were met with "Oh well it's only the 2 of us here tonight"....hardly what I would call a welcome! I did say, well we can always leave? He went into the kitchen and cam back and said we could order food. Whoop whoop. My husband ordered the venison burger & I order the ham, egg & chips. When the food arrived my husbands burger had cheese on, which was not part of the description on the menu. My husband has a cheese allergy and so would never order anything with cheese in/on it. When my husband pointed this out to the landlord he said, no, there's definitely cheese on it. No apology, no I'll get you another, just point blank, you're wrong and I'm right. We switched meals, it seemed the easiest thing to do at this point. The food was ok, we've had worse, we've had better. When we left the pub, we looked at the menu again and sure enough, no cheese on the venison burger. Husband went back and quietly pointed this out to him.....he still refused to believe us. When we got home, we looked at the menu on the website....guess what, no cheese. Seriously bad attitude from the landlord who obviously doesn't like to be wrong. I understand that the customer isn't always right, but this time we were. We won't bother going back.

This is a must visit pub if you are staying in the Tintern and Chepstow area. Only 5 minutes from Tintern. The menu is quite extensive with enough choice for a visit every night for a week. We had an early evening Sunday Lunch. The meat I had was not easily identified as lamb, but a splash of mint sauce made it seem like it was. My wife's beef looked much like my lamb, both lacked the suculent body one would expect from a sunday roast. They were accompanied by a selection of undercooked vegetables, comprising carrots, ok they can be undercooked, but leek, roast potato, do not fare so well. The gravy was bland, well the whole main course was. I then had apple pie and custard which looked unapetising on the plate, not presented well. I have to say however, it was extreemly good. We were looking forward to revisiting an old haunt, where the food had been, many years ago, exceptional. Maybe we came on a bad day. I guess one must not believe that one's visit will necessarily live up to the many good reviews. Disapointing. Date of visit 26 November 2017

Leading a bit of a hectic life, no one feels like cooking, some of us love it, some loathe it, so we, as a couple dine out regularly, not designer food, just simple pub grub...We had supported a fairly local pub, but due to hit and miss meals decided to venture further afield, someone had recommended The Fountain....From our first visit to our latest, the food, the service, the cozy atmosphere never fails to impress...The gardens are very pretty, with ample opportunity to laze an afternoon away with a pot of tea or a bottle of wine...( I don't drive, so opting for the wine is easy for me!!!)My partner is a steak man, with, preferably, home cooked and peeled chips, this they do...I'm not a burger person but......their burger certainly made " would you like a sweet" seem a step too far....( very filling, very tasty)Steak is always cooked to perfection, always tender and tasty, a simple thing like peas, yes peas, not overcooked to mush, but cooked just right....My burger, topped with bacon, egg and cheese....lots of flavours on the bun and lovely home made chips....We've never been able to manage a sweet, but have looked at them drifting by to other tables, looking very plentiful indeed....The interior is rustic, cozy and tables around a lovely wood burning stove...The hosts of the pub, are chatty, pleasant and knowledgeable about the area....I must mention the waitress who served us last night, very friendly and funny....All in all a pub that serves consistently excellent meals, reasonably priced, friendly hosts and a lovely location...We are looking forward to cold winters nights, to sit around the glowing wood burning stove and maybe try a pudding or two....maybe!!!!!

I have not been to The Fountain for some time but I recently visited the area again and over a week I visited the pub for a drink and something to eat. On one of the visits the experience was as I had remembered it from my last visit some six months prior. Everything was of a good standard. The second visit was not so good. I realise that the more people that come into a pub puts pressure on the staff etc but the overall quality was not as good. Went camping near the Forest of Dean and during a quick coffee stop someone recommended the Fountain Inn as a dog friendly food pub. What a recommendation! The food was all produced by the wife of the owner and barman, unfortunately we never got to meet her. Superb. The menu choice was nice and varied but not too vaste. The prices excellent. We had starters, mains and fat boy me a pudding. All were superb!! The honey chicken main i had was one of the tastiest salads I have ever eaten. Including drinks it was approx £50. It was that good we went again two days later. My wife stated the tiramisu the best she'd ever had. I would thoroughly recommend. We had a long walk and were late for our booking. Although there were 15 of us the roast was excellent and the service quick, served in a private upstairs room. Choice is obviously a bit limited (4 different roasts and baguettes and sandwiches made from these, served with salad) out of season in a country pub, but we could not fault them, despite the fact that they were also catering for a large christening party, which also looked excellent.

Read some very good things about this pub so factored it into a rather long walk and detour from Offas Dyke. Sad to say the famous welcome was a bit of a disdainful look and grunt from the older bird behind the bar who seemed to begrudgingly serve us two pints. Had a lovely dinner sitting in front of the fire, playing with a local Labrador! Real personal touch with the owner chatting to us about local running events and pouring us samples of cider to try. Couldn't fault the venison burger or the Gorgonzola ravioli. Hope to visit again!

Myself and two friends visited the pub last Friday eve and had a great welcome, fab food - duck was incredible - and very friendly service. Very cosy and warm old pub.

A group of eleven of us celebrating a family get together ate at the Fountain Inn recently having chosen it from the TripAdvisor reviews, and it more than lived up to its billing. The charming building is warm and cosy with a wonderful friendly, unrushed atmosphere. The hosts were friendly and very accommodating - nothing was too much trouble. The food was simply stunning - beautifully cooked to taste and delivered hot to the table in one go. They readily accommodated one of our group with difficult intolerances and we all really enjoyed our meals. It was a lovely place - the sun helped as the Inn is in a beautiful spot - and we would heartily recommend it.

We came across this little gem on a Monday bank holiday weekend. It was just an amazing experience. The menu had huge variety. We had homemade melted Brie as a starter which was a good 10 out 10. We then had pork and lamb which were locally sourced (pork from the actual farm). The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Definitely worth trying this place.

We went for a family lunch and enjoyed a wonderful home made meal in the pub garden. Everything was freshly prepared and tasted great with very generous portions. Steve, the owner, is so friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend the venison burger. Amazing value too!

Been lots of times to the fountain, can only say that it gets better each time. Excellent host, great food, good cider (and beer) selection. Great atmosphere, can't fault it. Thanks to Steve and Gill and the team.

I first when to this pub some forty years a go but left the area many years ago. It was a great place then and still is today. A bit off the beaten track but well worth a visit. The ambiance is just right for a places of this character. Steve, the landlord, is not a grumpy old git as the sign by the entrance says but a very welcoming host. The food is excellent, prepared by Steve’s wife, and is great value for money. There is a good selection of beers many of which are from local small breweries.

Lovely little pub and restaurant offering fresh local food some of which is produced in their own garden! The menu changes frequently and they offer an excellent value week night special.

When the menu says "home-reared boar chops", you just have to say, "Yes, please!". The tender, juicy meat (a generous portion, too) was served with Gruyere mashed potato and an Armagnac and apple jus, and accompanied by a selection of green vegetables that included Romanesco. Altogether a delicious meal. No surprise there, then!

Very friendly, good range of beers (incl. local), nice Sunday lunch (good value, three-course menu available, very nice homemade deserts, large portions). Pleasant 7-7.5km (approx 120m elevation) out and back from Tintern along the good-surfaced and quiet road following the stream/ river and passing the old wireworks and forge, also plenty of footpath options.

Four of us called for Sunday lunch on a rainy and cold day. Nice to be able to sit in front of the log burner while we were called through for lunch.Lunch is served on your plate to your table and there is plenty of it and it is cooked fresh.Definately recommend it, but try and sit near the bar area rather than the restaurant as we found the restaurant a little dark.

We negotiated unfamiliar roads to circumvent the closure of the direct route and it was very well worth it. We found a warm welcome, excellent ales, and one of the best meals we have ever enjoyed: meltingly good lamb, perfectly cooked vegetables, generous portions, very reasonable bill. Delightful interior to this pub and a sense of pride in what is served. Fantastic.

We booked the day before for 7 people we arrived over 45mins early and asked if this was ok and they accommodated us without hesitation. We opted for the roast beef dinner and a lamb dinner the portions were large with plenty of meat and a variety of vegetables. The desserts are also excellent and home made. Lovely atmosphere in the pub and very friendly staff.

Recommended by our holiday-cottage-owner this is a traditional local pub with a warm welcome, a wonderful waitress and really tasty food at pretty reasonable prices. It's a bit diifcult to find when the road from tintern is shut, so make use of your satnav. Would be nice to have some children's play equipment outside, but that's a minor quibble. Really great place, the cook is very talented.

Arriving on a sunny evening with the family, we enjoyed the garden (while our youngest family-member, almost two years old, explored the flower beds and the field next door), chatted and drank the local Kingstone beer. As the air became chilly, we moved inside to our delicious meals, and friendly chat with Steve, the landlord. We left happy, satisfied and smiling.

We stayed at the ARW for a short weekend break our anniversary. Our room was excellent, the price was very reasonable for the quality. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly during our stay and were happy to provide a bottle of bubbles for the room. Breakfast was first rate, the ambiance and decor was tasteful and the food was magnificent- we had chateaubriand steak for dinner on one night and went to a well-known upmarket restaurant the following might, and the ARW food we both thought was of much better quality. I'm sure we'll be back.
