Alfred Russel Wallace Restaurant With Rooms in Monmouthshire

We stayed at the ARW for a short weekend break our anniversary. Our room was excellent, the price was very reasonable for the quality. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly during our stay and were happy to provide a bottle of bubbles for the room. Breakfast was first rate, the ambiance and decor was tasteful and the food was magnificent- we had chateaubriand steak for dinner on one night and went to a well-known upmarket restaurant the following might, and the ARW food we both thought was of much better quality. I'm sure we'll be back.

From first entering we got a very warm welcome from a lovely young lady and it didn't stop there. Food was delicious and Pina colada was divine. Another young lady who served us was very polite and courteous. Guy who served drinks went above and beyond 🍻 🍹the chef was amazing 👏 Room was stunning very clean and everything there what we needed. Throughly enjoyed our stay and we will be back again soon. Well done everyone involved in this establishment if we could give more than 5 stars we would. Thankyou

What a shame - the owner has decided to stop the staff being creative and allowing them to make some incredible cocktails. Rooms are great, staff are great but maybe don’t micro manage and let your staff look after their customers if you’re not in the bar yourself.

Our first time here. An amazing warm welcome coupled with fantastic and attentive service. Fabulous food, properly cooked by a superb chef. Sat in the garden with live entertainment on a gorgeously sunny afternoon. Pricing is a little on the high side until you taste the food. All I can say is you get what you pay for. Will definitely be back for more. Thank you 😊👍

Very nice day for a Sunday Roast in the garden. We had the Chicken and Beef respectively. It was the perfect portions for a meal. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend.

We stayed two nights and it was lovely. A fantastic welcome, lovely dinner and great service. The chef is so accomplished and the food we had was excellent quality and wonderfully prepared. Breakfast is good & the team on both mornings were lovely. Poached eggs one morning, done to perfection. The next morning I wanted to keep it simple with just tomatoes on toast. But the chef really knows how to bring out the flavour of the ingredients.... Perfect way to start the day. Thank you

Disappointed- unfortunately, I had a steak that was over cooked and chewy - the rosti was fatty and inedible. One guest had the lamb that was dry and chewy. When I paid the bill I told the waitress you could tell a chef had not cooked the food as it was not seasoned, over cooked and I could not eat it. I would suggest you tell your customers that you don’t always have a chef cooking as I paid £138 bill and was still hungry when I left!!!! I will not be returning

Had an overnight stay. Lovely Chateaubriand for supper and the best breakfast out in a long while, cooked fresh and served hot by Mat. Loved the new terrace out the back for drinks. Free parking a bonus and a clean, comfortable room.

Kept the kitchen open even after we turned up after last orders, some of the best food I’ve ever had. Thankyou.

Amazing food and very helpful staff

Thanks to all at Alfred Russell Restaurant and Rooms for giving us a very comfortable stay. Everyone we met there were very welcoming, helpful and friendly, which we appreciated. Would not hesitate in staying again should we be passing through.

This was a birthday meal. We both loved it, it's difficult to serve steak for two different needs. That said the Château Briand shared by us was excellent ...served medium rare. Additionally as one of us did not want a potato side dish we were able to substitute the cabbage great customer service. Thank you.

A very warm welcome and excellent service to this restaurant. The food was fantastic. We were in a party of 6 that stayed overnight. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. Will look forward to another stay.

Booked for a meal in the restaurant and didn’t stay in the rooms so can only leave a review on the facilities we used….but if they are anything to go by I can only imagine the rooms will be stunning and very clean.

Best place in Usk. A 5 star experience in every way. A truly stunning restaurant, we were warmly greeted by the manager Sian and shown to a lovely table. The ambiance here is just right, the decor is stunning, really cosy. The food is second to none. The Wallace signature dish was amazing cooked to perfection and sides of stemmed broccoli and crispy cabbage were delicious. Compliments to the chef Matt !! Definitely worth a visit, can’t wait to return.

We visited as a family group of five on Saturday 24th February. First visit and most certainly not our last. Service of both food and drinks was first class - many thanks to our food and drinks waiters, all very friendly and helpful. Food was marvellous, with a mix of starters, main course and deserts - thoroughly enjoyed by all of us. Great atmosphere here and an evening to remember. As I said, we will certainly return. The room was cozy and really clean, like insanely clean - I ran my finger over the top of the bathroom mirror and there wasn't a spec of dust. At all. There was plenty of complimentary coffee and tea in the room and welsh cakes for when you arrive and breakfast was included in the price. Even though it's a steakhouse, the veggie breakfast was banging, the best one I've ever had and it was free. FREE!!

They also give you free earplugs, but it's so peacefulthere, i have no idea why you'd need them? Maybe in case of ghosts? Beakfast was included in the price, so we made sure we got on it, but i would have happily paid for it. Even though it's a steakhouse, the veggie breakfast was banging, the best one I've ever had and it was free. FREE!! The room we stayed in had a low beam in the middle of it, so being 6' 6", I was having to limbo under it, but that didn't detract from the charm of the place and I managed to avoid hitting my head even in the middle of the night. Rhe hotel is perfect location with all the pubs within walking distance and the river walk is right nearby. Would easily go back anytime of year, not just because I'm desperate for a break from my child.

My husband and I love coming here. The staff are friendly, great food and Pete the bar manager is amazing at making cocktails to suit what we feel like or give advice. Can’t wait for the new outdoor area to be ready

Went for a birthday meal with my wife. We enjoy fine dining and this seemed to fit the bill. Ambiance was just right, service was friendly but not intrusive and the food was some of the best we have had anywhere. There's a lot of competition in Usk but this place stands out as way better that the rest.

Has a great reputation and after visiting tonight 100% agree, service brilliant from bar too table, prawn starter and steak the best ive had for a long time, lovely place and will be back!

We booked for a Christmas get together with friends and it absolutely did not disappoint. Atmousphere, decor was perfect. I ordered scallops to start they were perfect and fillet steak, again cooked to perfection. My husband and I often eat out and love a steak but I have to say since the Royal closed in Usk years and years ago we have struggled to find a great steak in Usk......but no struggling from now on. Staff were lovely, professional yet friendly on hand for all our requests special mention to Emily as she was waiting on out table and was the perfect host. Fantastic meal will definitely return, thank you.

Wonderful impromptu evening! Excellent welcome from the barman Pete who made us feel so welcome even though we hadn't booked on a Friday evening and they were clearly so busy! They made room for us on a cosy table near the bar and we had a fabulous meal - excellent scallops to start , fillet steak for main with wonderful extra tender stem broccoli and crispy cabbage dishes too! Service and atmosphere was top notch ... will definitely return with friends. Thank you for such a lovely evening!

We stayed overnight here as we'd booked into another local restaurant. In hindsight, we wish wed eaten here! We also stayed overnight. The pub and restaurant area is cosy and modern and the menu looks great. A real plus is the cocktail bar, and Pete, the brilliant cocktail barman. He has a menu of classic cocktails as well as some of his own design, and he's happy to make you anything that's not on the menu too. He's also a very nice guy and made our evening really special. The rooms are beautiful and well designed. They're comfy and modern, and on a VERY cold night, were warm too. The free Welsh cakes were a lovely touch too. Breakfast the following morning was excellent and the staff genuinely couldn't do enough for us. I only live 8 miles away, but we're already planning a return visit!

Kelly, Sian and the team have done a fantastic job creating a classy and fabulous place to eat in Usk. We had the 3 course Sunday Lunch which was traditional food with high end flare. You are getting good quality ingredients, starters such as scallops and rib eye, mains that come with a carrot puree and samphire ( I love salty samphire) and desserts like a sticky toffee pudding that have the deepest, richest, butteriest caramel sauce that feels decadent but not too far from traditional. Certainly you feel a bit more special than a pub Sunday lunch but not that much more expensive. The "facilities" are spotless and smell divine. Can't wait to come back for an evening of steak and cocktails, I hope the log fires are real as that extra bit of warmth will give this gorgeous venue that extra bit of cozy romance for a fabulous night out.

Clean, comfortable and cosy. We stayed here overnight and had a wonderful visit. The staff were so welcoming and friendly and the lovely chef cooked us a truly top notch breakfast. We will definitely be returning. Thank you so much.

A very warm welcome. Our top floor room was clean, comfortable and spacious. The bathroom had a shower but no bath which for us was fine. Good choice of TV channels including netflix. Wifi Worked well. Parking was easy in large free public car park at rear of hotel. Directions supplied were excellent. My traditional British breakfast was very good as was my wifes vegetarian alternative. The restaurant focusses on steak although there are fish and vegetarian alternatives. My steak was first class and my wife particularly enjoyed her beetroot burger. Tap water was supplied without any fuss and we enjoyed cocktails rather than wine with our meal. The town of Usk was attractive and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. All in all the hotel and the surroundings made for a great weekend away.
