I have been here a couple of times this year and it was just ok. Today we had sunday lunch at 2.30 and it was pretty poor. In fairness thr food was alright, not great but no major issues. However the service was appalling: we booked for 2, had drinks first and then the staff seemed shirty we were sitting down so late. We had to ask for menus and wine menus. The main course was brought out before anyone cleared the table; delightful when half the table had seafood and so we were surrounded by shells as they tried to cram all the veg on. As they cleared the mains the waiter practically sat in my lap, straddled me as he cleared away! And we had to ask for the bill 3x. Its a shame as i have been here and its been pleasant and they have seemed like they care. Not entirely sure what has changed.

The best country pub in the World. 6 stars. A jewel of North Monmouthshire. Lovely owners, lovely staff, lovely customers. You can eat and drink like a King or Queen in rustic and beautiful unmodernised surroundings. I cannot fault this place, it is the best of the best. I have been to hundreds of country pubs and this one is the Outright Winner.

Nice place, lots of quirky stuff in the pub, that feels like it's been collected over many years. If there is something happening in the pub, then it can be pretty noisy. But it doesn't mean that it is a bad thing. Food was great! The only thing that disappointed was the desserts. So go for starter and main and you will have a great lunch/dinner!

We called in on the spur of the moment and were pleasantly surprised to be served so quickly as the Inn was very busy. Our food was served at different times, so my plate was cool by the time my husband's food arrived. However, the food was lovely and worth the wait. We will certainly return for a tapas lunch.

We have always had a warm welcome at the Clytha. They are welcoming to adults, kids and dogs. The food is always very nice and we live going. In the winter the fires are burning and in the summer we enjoy the beer garden. We have also found them helpful with gluten free diets and other requirements. We are local, and come now and again. They were absolutely fabulous over the pandemic - a great support- providing take away Sunday lunches and pints. Can’t fault them - highly recommend.

Awful place... This is our 'local' as we live a minute down the lane. If you don't frequent the place every night don't even bother. Turned away for drinks when the pub is busy and open on more than one occasion. Told off for using the beer garden as their dogs are in there and using the door to the beer garden as the owners are eating their dinner (no signage for either). Staff and owner are rude, intolerable and pretentious. It's passable to sit in the beer garden in the summer away from the atmosphere and we've tried with the place a few times now but can no longer justify giving them our money. Never again! Hopefully it will be taken over soon so we can enjoy the country side near the house we paid so much for! Disappointing, embarrassing and rude.

Total gem. Got here Friday afternoon and it was a warm welcome and the sort of place you can chill and read a paper while enjoying a pint. Went for a lovely walk and came back for dinner. Now it’s a bustling local with a great crowd. Dinner was wonderful. So well cooked and felt looked after. Room was amazing. Spacious and a welcome change to the usual sterile rooms you get from the big chains. Breakfast was also awesome. Went out to the Black Mountains for the day and back for dinner. Again great food and a surprisingly good wine list. Like I say, this place is a hidden gem and I will definitely be using this as a base again for a weekend visit of the stunning Welsh countryside. Can’t recommend enough.

Went recently for food. The location was great and the pub itself was really cosy with a great outside seating area. We both had tapas starters which were hit and miss (the chorizo overpowered the prawn skewers). The mains looks nice but mine was only lukewarm and the corn frittas were cold. My partner has been countless times and have only positive experiences so I will put this down to personal taste and an off night. The most annoying thing however, was a member of the bar staff in her early to mid twenties who just looked like she wanted to be anywhere apart from there. No smile, going through the motions and not what I would expect from a country pub. I would go back but please..... this time can I have a friendly smile just once?

Well what can I say, went out for a drive to Abergavenny with the wife and on our way home felt a bit peckish so decided to stop here for lunch.(Big mistake). There was a wide selection on the menu but I thought I’ll have pie and chips (nobody can mess that up) another mistake, and the wife had faggots and chips. As we waited 40 minutes for a simple meal we kept ourselves entertained by try to catch the fly which was buzzing around the restaurant. When the meal finally arrived it was piping hot so I thought good sign, another mistake, the pie was in a dish so I had to cut around the edge to get it onto the plate, it contained chicken, ham and cider well the pastry was okay as was the chicken but the ham wasn’t chewable and the chips although hot seem to have been cooked a few times. Wife said the faggots were okay. So all in all the meals, half a lager and a tonic water £33-30, if the food had been up to scratch I wouldn’t have minded but personally I think this restaurant food is poor and overpriced. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

Quite possibly the worst Sunday lunch ever .. overcooked roast potatoes, tough meat , ratatouille, carrots in a random bean sauce , insipid gravy, only good thing was the cabbage! Cheesecake was gelatinous and awful! Service slow .. and a black Labrador sniffing around under the table whilst we were eating wasn’t great as I’m allergic to dogs… we kept putting it out and it kept returning! Tried overcharging us on the bill also.. never again!

Whereas the inside of this pub is nice and the food good the outside leaves a lot to be desired. Quite honestly if I arrived at the car park I'd turn around. The garden area is good but under the eaves of the pub where there are chairs and tables. It was filthy. The first thing they should do is wash all the floor tiles and make it tidy, I don't know if this was a one off or if its always this dirty. Come on Clytha up your game.

Only downside was it could’ve been warmer. We’ve had tapas here on previous occasions has also been very good and broad selection of dishes to choose from. There is also a main menu too that has plenty to choose from too. No matter what you come here for. It will not be a disappointment. I think this pub is suffering, like many others in the hospitality game from lack of staff. The young lad serving behind the bar was very pleasant but lacking in experience, and service was very slow. We were eating outside in the garden which was very pleasant. One of our group had a dog. Pub is doggy friendly. We were 3 couples and not in a big hurry so no real problem with slow service. We ordered 3 starters - 2 calamares and an omelette from the tapas menu. The calamares were OK, but could have done with a few more minutes to crisp up maybe. My husband had faggots, peas and mash for main, which he declared absolutely delicious. There was one soup of the day, again a delicious and a very reasonable - seafood soup. One of our gang had a chicken dish with a corn fritter - lovely and 3 of us had the mussels in a cider sauce and chips. They were excellent. Just a bit of a wait between receiving the mussels, the finger bowls and the chips, but not a major problem. Best mussels I have had for a long while, perfectly cooked. All in all, a very enjoyable meal with friendly if slow service due to staffing levels. Would have had a 5 star review if service was quicker. Feel a bit mean because all hospitality are suffering with staffing levels at the moment. Complements to the chef for superbly cooked mussels, and faggots, peas and mash. Will happily return.

Bit of an OTT menu for a country pub, think they would do more business with some more standard pub classics on the menu. The options available are all a bit pompous and fancy, although the tapas options looked good. There are 3 pub dogs that they call 'free range', now I'm not offended by dogs at all (I have 2 myself!) but if you have pub dogs they should be kept under control so they do not bother the lunch goers. I had to forceably remove one male dog twice from our table, when I asked a staff member to call the dogs in he did it so feabily I may as well have not bothered. They also dont care when the dogs walk into the main road, and deficate next to people enjoying a drink the the garden. love dogs, but I wont go back because of these unruly dogs.

No recognisable beers at the bar so was forced to opt for something unusual which wasn’t great. Starters were ok but the Sunday dinner was really poor. Some the lamb was over cooked and some of it hardly cooked, mushy vegetables and worst of all was the insipid gravy which was just awful. I’m told the food here is generally ok, but it wasn’t demonstrated the day we went. Nice rural setting but that’s about it.

Totally chaotic lovely pub and restaurant. Imagine Fawlty Towers with great food and you’ll be on the mark - and there’s a gorgeous dog friendly bar as well. Prepare for hilarity.

We came upon the Clytha Arms on 9th May 2019...and during our 3 day stay in Pempergwm...we ate here twice....the staff are very friendly....and the menu is very interesting indeed....I live in a town full of restaurants but this menu is full of unusual food...we enjoyed both our meals and found the prices including alcohol to be very reasonable..if we pass this way again we will definitely come back....oh and our dog was welcome too..

I had been looking forward to eating here for a while but it was all a bit underwhelming. We had to wait over an hour for our lunch (the pub wasn't overly busy), except for my faggots order which took even longer. The faggots were actually really good when they eventually arrived, but the other dishes ordered (a smoked haddock special and croque madame, for the record) ranged from average to poor. And just to pick up on a previous reviewer's comments, we took our dog and were greeted by the pub's two friendly and inquisitive labradors who continued to wander in and out of the bar throughout our visit - obviously this was quite a few times given the time we had to wait for our food. We had absolutely no problem with this and the labradors were perfectly friendly during our visit, however, being the parent of a child who used to be terrified of dogs (until we had our own), I fully acknowledge that their presence would not be welcomed by everyone hoping for a pleasant family trip to the pub.

We booked the restraunt and that was the only part that was easy. We arrived and we're kept waiting at 7.00pm for a restraunt that opened at 7.00pm. When we finally got to our table and our order arrived the Moules frites were only Moules - despite it saying on the menu they came with fries the staff argued it was only with a main course. My Sea Bass turned up and when opened up the guts were still inside with uncooked blood. Needless to say we left.

My husband and I arrived on foot after a 6 mile walk and possibly made our first mistake by walking down the drive to the pub. We were greeted by two large barking and growling labradors. As I had recently been badly bitten by a very unfriendly and aggressive dog (also while on a walk) I was extremely reluctant to proceed. My husband tried shouting at them to go away but to no avail. Despite the dogs making a lot of noise, no one from pub appeared to come and take them under control. If there had been any other alternative place to stop we would have taken it but we were extremely tired and hungry by then. A lady customer of the pub who had come outside for a cigarette said that they were normally very docile but we had come in by an entrance that is not used very often. We had entered by the nearest entrance from the walk as the B4598 is a very busy narrow road with no verge. Eventually my husband chased the dogs away and they ran in to the back of the pub. We entered and were standing at the bar for some time waiting to be served. It seemed there was only one person serving. While I appreciate that it is off season and a Thursday lunch time, the bartender did not acknowledge our presence. A simple "I'll be with you shortly" would have sufficed. When he did arrive although he asked how he could help us, I could not help thinking that a "Sorry to keep you waiting" would have been a common courtesy. My husband asked to see the menu to which the reply was "You'll have to be quick, we stop serving in 5 mins". We ordered tapas and drinks. i had mashed avocado with tomatoes and cheese and my husband the cheeseburger. To be fair, the food arrived pretty quickly and was delicious. Such a shame that this was overshadowed by our initial reception. I'm sure that as the pub is on a recognised National Trust walk route, they must have other customers who arrive on foot.

Our fourth trip to the Clytha Arms.Staff always friendly food consistently excellent. Find the bad reviews strange as we have always had a variety of dishes and none has been duff. Expected to wait for FRESHLY PREPARED pudding and the wait was well wot while.

I cannot believe how much trouble the chef went to for my lunch today! I had lentil mousakka with vegan cheese on top as well as my own little dish of cauliflower cheese and another dish of vegetables. The chef offered to do fresh wild mushroom soup as a starter and I am so glad I said not to. I am stuffed. All our meals were slot on. And you should have seen my friends Souffle!!!!!! This place is definitely worth a return visit. Staff were so nice and relaxed.

This was close to where we were staying so had high hopes. when we arrived we were the only people in the restaurant which is never a good sign. We thought at least we would be served quickly but were wrong. It took half an hour to get our starter which was very ordinary. The main course came quickly but although my salmon was good my wife's haddock was disgusting.

Called in for lunch on my birthday; extensive menu but decided on the fruit curry - wow what a choice - it was delicious! The usual friendly service; don't be in a hurry as the food is individually prepared but well worth those extra minutes.

Spent an overnighter at this Welsh country pub near Abergavenny with my wife and 2 American friends in mid September. A glass of superb local ale began our stay then dinner from a menu of a range of local fish, superbly presented and cooked. The 2+ hours spent in the tastefully decorated old fashioned dining room was extremely enjoyable. Our room was well worth the £89 price: a lovely comfy double bed with soft down pillows & down duvet, a range of teas and coffees that would embarrass a normal hotel room, bath & shower with immediate hot water on tap (sic!), loads of towels, as much shower gel, shampoo, etc, as a small Boots, 2 towelling robes that fitted my prop forward stature, and peace . . . . until woken by the bird call at around 7am. Then followed a full Welsh breakfast including cockles and laverbread if you wanted. This was a real find; I don't want to recommend it as we'd like to keep to ourselves, but I'm afraid I must. If I could give it 6 out of 5 I would. Highly recommended.

We weren't disappointed on our annual visit to the Clytha. We arrived at 6.30pm and the place was buzzing with the locals. The selection of drink on offer is very good and so is the food. We ordered and ate our food in the bar at around 7.30ish: there is a tapas menu or an a la carte and it all came pretty quickly. It was very good. Sadly, the bar seemed to empty at around 9pm, although there were people in the restaurant. A very good evening just the same.
