Best Chinese food in Newmarket. Food for pick up is ready quickly and is hot and fresh. The crispy duck is my favourite very yummy

A Tuesday night so very quiet . My wife and I ( late fifties) ordered a set meal for 2 and extra noodles . The set meal was enough for one and the noodles never appeared which was acknowledged at the end . Quality of the food not great , very watery and no real flavour , not a great evening and the choice of moving from a nice pub up the road to here turned out to be a poor one on our part , peter

We went to The Fountain for the birthday meal of a family member. Getting the big round table for 8 people we settled on a menu plus some extras. The meal (starters, crispy duck & mains) was good, the service excellent. A friendly owner who was very generous with prawn crackers and extra pancakes and hoi sin sauce for the duck and managed to organise a special birthday dessert. Very pleasant visit.

First time there the food was nice and unusual however, portions very small for the high prices. Second time, not great experience with the food, nothing I ordered was very nice, portions even smaller than the fist time, all food was very greasy and bland and the ribs were particularly dry and burnt. Perhaps we were unlucky that day with the food and with our options, we’ll have to have another go again to see but this time overall, food wasn’t very nice, portions very small and overpriced. Service is good, the Gentleman that runs the restaurant is a Gem and goes above and beyond with everything. The young lady that works there, is rather unfriendly and rude.

Very Poor food, will not be returning! Crispy duck so dry and been re cooked several times. Other items were very poor! portions small and no flavour.

Possibly the worst Chinese I ever had. Do not order the crispy duck. It’s certainly not crispy and if ever had been a duck it was a long time ago. Served extremely dry and ready shredded. Lemon chicken was almost inedible as it was so sweet. Sizzling beef was average so became the highlight of the meal. Wine list is way out of date and they try and pass off equivalents at same price. Minimum $15 per person charge for food, even if you order expensive wine. Just a bad night.

Quality ingredients are used in their extensive menu. I Love the appetizers not typical of many UK Chinese menus, Stir fry chicken to wrap in lettuce leaves has become a favourite, very light and the texture is amazing. Not what you expect from the description. Adding the fried vegetables to your order is a good idea, as many dishes do not contain veg, plenty to share. The Fountain features attentive service and a gracious host.

The menu is so limited and the food was not good at all!

Our Waitress was hopeless, but the order was correct and the food was very nice. Was clean, inviting and we were not hurried at all.

Awful restaurant. Really overpriced, miniscule portions and the food is not very tasty. The dish I ordered was too salty. My partner ordered a sizzling Cantonese steak and received a narrow plate full of onions with 7 small pieces of diced beef on it. AVOID!

I read the mixed reviews and took a gamble but it did not pay off. I bought the spring rolls (starter) , satay chicken and singapore chow mein as a take away. When it arrived I honestly thought from the weight somethings missing. When I got back to eat my meal I discovered half filled small container with chow mein, 6 tiny pieces of chicken with a dribble of satay sauce. The chicken was overcooked and was stuck onto the skewer. The starter (spring rolls) was approx thumb size and had no filling only pastry. I hardly ever leave poor feedback however at nearly £22 this was a complete rip off. There were only 2 people in the restaurant which says a lot !!! My advice is clearly to go elsewhere!!

Popped in on the off chance with my wife around 7.30. The place wasn’t packed but had a nice crowd in. The dishes we ordered were delicious especially the sea bass. This restaurant in my opinion always delivers (excuse the pun) and it comes with great service at all times.

Been in a lot of restaurants Food was OK, but portion size not good. I know you have to make a profit but £8.00 ,for a bowl of rice is extortionate

We went on a Saturday evening and they managed to fit us in. Lovely food and good service.

The best Chinese food I’ve ever had!

I must say that this is the poorest , lowest quality Special Fried Rice that I have ever had . £ 8 for two tiny portions , which contained little more than minute flecks of meat and one prawn ! What more can I say than I feel an absolute mug to have paid so much for so little . If I could have given less than one star I would have , it is more than I had to eat.

Fantastic food and only the friendliest of service! A family favourite worthy of the trip, everytime.

2nd and last time I’ll ever eat here. Ok, I’ve tried this place twice now and haven’t had a decent meal yet. The first time we had just moved house and we’re very hungry. We ordered spicy pork, king prawns with ginger and spring onions and a couple of rices. The rices were maybe 80% full but otherwise acceptable. The prawn dish wasn’t unpleasant but didn’t really taste of much. The spicy pork was quite nice other than a burnt undertone. The second time we ordered mains and cooked our own rice we had spicy pork again (I was willing to try it again), mixed vegetables and chilli chicken. The pork was the same included the burnt undertone. The chilli chicken was basically like the jarred sauce you buy in Chinese supermarkets with bullets of tough chicken and the mixed veg was a disaster! A gloopy sauce of 90% beans sprouts, perhaps 1/3 of a carrot, two mushrooms and three flat green beans. It tasted of nothing. When I called to complain they didn’t really care, no offer of a replacement either.

From start to finish our evening was perfect staff fantastic food excellent clean tidy place with a very good vibe will retuen again and again

Food was ok but very limited choice for vegetarians. The portions were small and very disappointing. The vegetables in oyster sauce were just a few pack choi leaves with oyster sauce drizzled on top. A 10% service charge was wacked on top and the waitress still directed us to the gratuity on the card machine.

Food was do oily. I ate there a few years ago and at the time it was the best Chinese I had ever eaten in uk. But this time I threw the food in the bin

Worst Chinese in Newmarket, food was awful and really over priced. £6.50 for two satay chicken skewers! Stick to Studland house !

I ate here recently with a group of 3, 2 of us were very satisfied and 1 was underwhelmed. The 'chilli chicken' was ordered and it was more like a sweet and sour with added chilli. The starters came out 10-15 minutes apart and the service was slow.On a plus, the chefs are able to deviate from the menu and half of us were very satisfied.

Nice food lots of seafood so if u like fish good place . The soft shell crab 🦀 is lovely. The duck is very good as well

Super awkward experience as one of ladies who worked there stared at us while we ate. On top of that it was expensive and not that great of food.

Went to the fountain for the first time Friday evening. Have read and heard good things about the place but the reality was somewhat different. Plain food and slow service a 3/10 at best I was very disappointed and wouldn’t bother to go back. I can’t think of anything positive to say about the place.Probably doesn’t help that’s it’s the only Chinese in town.No competition breeds complacency .

The service was fast and attentive, the food was decent but perhaps a little predictable. I imagine they are used to churning out meals on race day... Tuesday night not quite the same. Give it a go if you like atypical UK Chinese restaurant fare.

Welcome back the fountain! Went here last Monday for a fifty birthday celebration. We have been several times since last review and always enjoyed the evening and meal.The food is always excellent and service extremely attentive .Our favourite Chinese restaurant which is perfect in every way.Food and service always very professional If you haven’t tried this restaurant then please book and have a cracking evening.We will Certainly will be back and the price was very reasonable.Hope to see you in the very near future Sorry for making so much noise

I've eaten in once with family and had take away twice and I'm been left disappointed.

Very little choice for vegetarians but what was provided was first class. The food is quite expensive however! Very quick service which was - as I was in a rush - just what I wanted. They do include a service charge [not optional] so no need to leave a tip!

Fabulous lunch for about 40 of us. The quality and quantity was unbelievable, just delicious. Highly recommend the lobster, crab, duck, fish, everything! The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming and literally ‘nothing’ was too much for them - the chef even prepared some chicken nuggets for my youngest who wasn’t ready for lobster, crab or fish!! A wonderful afternoon, a memory to last a life time. Thank you

Strange place the Fountain. The only Chinese restaurant in Newmarket, you would think they would make a bit more of an effort. Food is quite good, if a little expensive. The restaurant is souless, there is no atmosphere whatsoever. The waitresses whilst efficient, really should attend the customer service course. Absolutely nothing. No warmth, no interaction, really is such a shame. Car park at the rear.

Just spent 54 pound on a take away. Absolutely diabolical. We left it. Soggy salt n pepper squid, salt n pepper ribs that look and tasted like they were boiled. Chow mein with very thin noodles, no colour and bland. Chicken with garlic and spring onion think they forgot the garlic and used rotten spring onion, bean sprouts with garlic, no garlic and it tasted of vinegar. Egg fried rice, looked like pilau rice, soggy. Singapore noodles very bland . The only thing that tasted ok was chicken in black bean may be it was from a jar. The meal didn't deserve a star but I couldn't het on here to review so had to click it

I have been told about the Fountain and how good it is for years so I decided to give it a try with some friends for my Birthday.Not much of a welcome in fact hardly anything at all, Shown to a nice table and coats were taken. The menu did lack some of the dishes you might expect to find in a local takeaway Chinese restaurant but their are some exciting addictions as well.Nice large turn table in the middle great for folk sharing.We found food very good tasty and freshly prepared, portions are a little on the small side. Shame about the atmosphere, hosts and waiters dont talk to you at all hardly smile.It is on the expensive side so its a treat to go.No Draft beer just bottles.Parking nearby about 5 minutes walk.I would go again but not a everyday use restaurant.

I have not been here for a while but after tonight don't think we will be back. After poor rude service from one of the waitresses including a full blown argument with her boss over our neighbouring table, poor them, the food was only average. Incredibly overpriced too.

We have been here many times, but for some reason not go round to reviewing and thought it was time I did.

Always wanted to see what the fountain had to offer but always ended up at our favourite Chinese in Cambridge,so we tried the fountain last Wednesday night and had a fantastic time.

This place only survives as it is the only sit-in Chinese in Newmarket-I can't really fault the food more the management- staff- seem a bit star struck to me want to impress the horse racing fraternity- they should be very careful who they upset as they don't know who EVERYBODY is- maybe they should just give good service to ALL their customers - bit radical I know

Have been going to “Peter’s” (The Fountain) since I can remember with my family and have always loved it! My favourite is the smoked chicken in lettuce and the peiken ribs. Also recently tried the chilli sea bass which I loved. If you consider chips and chicken balls ‘chinese’ then it’s not for you... go to a cheap take away. However, if you want a tasty authentic meal with family or friends, maybe before/after the races or for a celebration, then this is the best place to go!

When we arrived the restaurant was empty but within 20 minutes it had filled up very rapidly. We perused the extensive menu whilst having a drink and then decided to plump for the set meal for two. Just the right amount, very tasty and a nice balance of flavours. Have read of poor service here - we have visited twice during the summer and have found the service very good.

Did not know Chinese could be that good... Best Chinese I have had for years, menu is very much at the pricey end of Chinese but when is all is cooked to order with generous top quality ingredients it would be mean to complain. Really very impressed.

This place used to be a favourite of mine but in recent visits it has seriously gone downhill, our latest meal was the worst service I have ever had in a restaurant the starters came out in dribs and drabs and the staff didn't smile once or pour the wine for you like they used to. Also the food was not up to standard we ordered sizzling steak it when it came out it was not sizzling at all. The staff really need to buck their ideas up and try and be more friendly instead of being miserable and rude. Don't EVER leave them a tip as there is a 10% service charge they don't warn you about. We wont be back im afraid id rather eat elsewhere and made to feel welcome.

Recently re decorated and now been open nearly 30 years and continues to thrive .

Me and my wife had the pleasure of spending to weekend in Newmarket, we have been many times before, we have eaten in several different places so this time we decided to eat in the Fountain restaurant. What we didn’t do was check out the menu in to much detail. On arrival we were given a food and drinks menus. It looked a pretty standard Chinese’s restaurant menu except the lack of any curry dishes ? When asked if we were ready to order i asked the waitress/owner if that did any sort of curry or even a curry sauce, she replied no we don’t but we do curry on the takeaway menu ? We enjoyed what we had but laughed when the waitress then went onto explain we don’t do chicken ball or chips either. I did then mention it might be worth rethinking there menu as we were the only couple in the restaurant at 21;30 on a Friday night

We had set meal for two £45 very nice plenty of food saw it in Frankie dettori autobiography and thought give it a go well worth a visit

Food ok. No interaction or smile from staff. Food arrived on a very piecemeal basis for 4 of us. Bill not detailed except for service charge added to the one total shown!

Just had a take away; absolutely terrible value! Food was below average and barely any food to show for £50!!! Beyond disappointed!

It's the best Chinese I've been to friendly people and staff and great food. I would recommend that you go there. I met former jockey Darryl Holland.

I recommend booking - especially if it is a race-day in Newmarket. Food is great, so fresh and a great variety on the menu. Service is good, but could be better as we kept having to look for a waiter when we needed more drinks.

Visited here last week and was really pleased to see new carpet and decor as the old carpet was a bit sticky!.The food here is always good and I always have the Peking Ribs and Cashew Chicken.Staff are always friendly and welcoming.Will see you guys soon!

Not just the best Chinese in Newmarket. but possibly the best in England.

Food here was amazing, but the service really let the place down. Felt like the waitress really couldn't be bothered. Didn't crack a smile the whole evening, no interaction, didn't ask how the food was, or if we wanted more drinks. Really hard work.

Set menu for 4 people is BIG with so much choice Have had a few take-away midweek from here and they have been available to pick up so quick Car park behind

Shredded chicken soggy and flavourless. Spot the meat in the Szechuan chicken and the egg fried rice soggy won't be getting take out from there again

Just had a takeaway from fountain and unfortunately i must say normally when paying 30£ i would expect to at least feel full after i had my meal ( and I'm not a big eater ! ) portion of noodles with 'chicken' ( literally 50 grams of) and few been sprouts , spring rolls - 4 mini to be exact - burned !!! , stay clear of this place people, overpriced and average quality!

Best Chinese restaurant in Newmarket!

Went for my birthday. Staff very professional, food excellent. I had mixed seafood and rice, scallops and pork bites. Subtle flavours, well cooked and tasted like food I had in the Far East. Will definitely go back again and use the take away facility too.

Hemos estado en este restaurante y estamos gravemente decepcionado. La comida estaba seco y no es muy buena. El servicio fue pésimo, me tomó años conseguir el vino y las mesas no fueron aclaradas por un largo tiempo. Para colmo de males, nos cobraron bastante...

Había oído un montón de buena menciona para el restaurante, pero no pude conseguir una mesa En anteriores visitas. Así que estuvimos muy interesados en probar. Tengo que decir en primer lugar, no es el más acogedor de los locales y el personal sin duda...

Nos había considerado un sentarse en comida para la familia, pero eligió una opción para llevar en su lugar. La comida era rápido pero enormemente decepcionante. Medio lleno contenedores significaba nos quedamos cortos en lo suficiente para todo el mundo. La calidad de los platos eran lustre falta. La carne de alubias negras era aguado y carecía de sabor, la dulce y agria pollo sólo tenía cuatro piezas en el contenedor y el kung po pollo casi todo era de bambú y casi cualquier carne. No volveremos otra vez porque nos sentimos mal servido en relación calidad-precio y calidad.

We were well looked after again by the staff of The Fountain. Food was great. They never disappoint.

Overall not impressed. As people have said in review's the staff are un-welcoming and I found them short and sharp and this came across as rude. The food portions were small although tasty enough and the prices were above average. I personally would not return.

Have been here a few times now and find a great and varied menu along with speedy polite service has kept us coming back.Love the Peking Ribs!.Always eat in rather than take away as its a nice venue.

I regularly visit The Fountain for delicious Chinese food. It's very quick service and moderately priced! The best Chinese in Newmarket!The staff are always friendly however the place does need updating, especially the toilets.The food is usually very good. It is also a great place to spend new year - after a meal the restaurant turns into a disco.

We recently ate here for the second time. The first time we enjoyed the food but had little more to say. Our most recent visit was for a relative's birthday with a party of twelve. There was only us and another table of three on this occassion which we thought would allow us to appreciate the restaurant more. This was not the case. My first thought was that the service was incredibly slow considering it was not busy. We also found the staff to be very rude and when we asked what they recommended off the menu the waitor walked away. The food was, again, OK. We found the starters to be poor quality - overcooked spring rolls, rubbery sate chicken etc. The mains on the other hand were all cooked perfectly and full of flavour. Desserts were OK if you went for something cooked rather than their frozen choices. The decor is tired and not particularly inviting. Perhaps it was that it wasn't busy but there really isn't an atmosphere. Overall, a decent meal out if you fancy a sit down Chinese meal but we won't be returning for a special occassion.

Thought I'd treat myself to a take away knowing it would be expensive but expecting a delicious treat. The dumplings were ok. The soft shell crab was so dry and over done it wasn't edible and the noodles with mixed meat were the worst I've ever had. Mixed meat indeed if you count two pieces of chicken two slabs of pale either chicken skin or duck (inedible ) and one piece of beef (I think). Disgusting meal, definitely not worth a visit unless you have money to throw away and you're not hungry.

Not the best looking place from the outside which is a shame as it no doubt puts some people off. Inside the decor is ok but it's the food and service that make this place. We visited as a party of ten and had a fantastic time. Not the cheapest but a bill of £350 for ten people including a shed load of drinks is hardly expensive. Well worth a visit if you fancy a Chinese while in Newmarket.

Second visit and a great meal, excellent service, spacious layout so you are not on top of the next table. Staff were friendly and helpful. most enjoyable and will re-visit

Can hand on heart say this is the best on offer in Newmarket... 10 out of 10 all the way... Can't wait till tomorrow's t.. left overs.. give it a go if you enjoy it half as much as we did, you will never eat anywhere else..

Thought I would treat my girlfriend to a lovely meal out. Far from it!!! Found the staff rude, the food quality was very poor ( ordered spring rolls. When they came out they where under cooked and the staff didn't like be told so) and the decor of the place reminded me of a northern working man's club and I've seen nicer toilets at Glastonbury. Will never visit this place again.If you want nice food go to the Thi Street cafe. Friendly staff top quality food, and great value for money
