The Food Lodge in Midlothian

Very nice fresh food. Lovely dumplings. Plenty of chicken in the chilli/garlic and char sui in the schezuan dish. The veggies were nice and chrunchy. Ordered way too much but the leftovers will do for tomorrow's lunch.

Got a takeaway 2nd time i've been, one of the best Chineese i've had unreal. Don’t know if i’d sit in tbf looks quiet. Would recomend chicken spring rolls and anything with honey chili.

I can say that without a doubt this is singlehandedly the Very best Chinese food I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. The Chicken curry was incredibley tasty with extremely generous sized pieces of chicken and the noodles were also amazing. It was clear that the meal was prepared fresh as it came through in the taste and texture and nothing was too fatty. After trying a few very disappointing chinese takeaway's nearby this was a wonderful surprise! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Twice came here and first time told don't open restaurant till 5.30pm we were there at 4.30pm Decided to go another day arrived at 5.40pm to be told so many carryout food we would have to wait hour for food at table 😲🙄tut tut was very disappointed

I've ordered takeout many times from Food Lodge. It is always delivered promptly...usually within an hour or a little longer. The food is always hot and so tasty, even the fried items which usually are soggy if ordered as takeout from other restaurants. The salt and chilli tofu is my favourite :)

Had a lovely meal last night, the food was excellent, the two girls who served us made us feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. I asked for a dish that wasn’t on the menu and it wasn’t a problem there was so much food I couldn’t finish it so asked to take it home again this was not a problem. I was pleasantly surprised when the bill arrived I expected it to be much more expensive.Great evening lovely atmosphere we will definitely be back.

Staff were so rude. The way they spoke to us was unbelievable, very condescending. But I have to say, the food was amazing!

Place is freezing, radiator sitting there but not on. Staff walking around in body warmer! Staff inappropriate towards customers. Some food average but chicken is slimy so avoid.

Ordered a take away of special chow mein and special kung po sauce. The kung po was ok but the chow mein was awful. It was tasteless and really lacked seasoning. I found it inedible and sadly it went in the bin. Luckily we were only passing through Penicuik so we won’t ever be ordering from there again.

Best Chinese meal in the area. I never leave a grain of rice on my plate.

Ordered a delivery/takeaway at 7.55pm on a Sunday night and had to phone at 9.30pm to see where it was. I was told that they were one driver down and that I would have to wait. Food arrived about 9.40pm no apology and the chicken wings were soggy. Very disappointed.

Chow mein was very tasteless, minimal flavour. Chicken satay was delicious! Slightly spicy but really nice. Cantonese style sweet and sour chicken was lovely. Overall a nice Chinese but shame about the noodles!

This restaurant used to be really good, went there for years, however it’s now changed hand. Had a takeaway last night and I can honestly say it one if the worst meals I’ve had in my life. Had to put it in the bin.

On holidays from Australia and was recommended here by a local couple we met in the Royal Hotel in Penecuik. We had a really lovely meal and was helped by the two lovely ladies who looked after us. We had the pork with mushroom and oyster sauce and a yeung chow fried rice. Would recommend 👌

Can't fault the food, however the restaurant could do with modernising. Very dated and carpets dirty. Shame this let's the place down as food superb

I recently moved to Penicuik and felt a sudden need for a food delivery this evening. Not wanting a Dominoes I turned to Google maps and searched for "healthy food delivery near me" Zoomed in on the map and this place was the first I looked at. I clicked on some reviews which encouraged me to look at the menu. The menu/order option within maps took me to a nice smart looking ordering page and I easily placed an order. Received my confirmation email with expected delivery time and thanks. The order arrived 30 mins earlier than I expected much to my delight as I was starving. The food was simply delicious! I have eaten Chinese food all over the world over multiple decades and have had Chinese and Taiwanese girlfriends in the past, both they and their families treated me to their delicious cooking many times. Tonight's meal was definitely in my top five Chinese meals that I have eaten in my life. I had no idea Penicuik was hiding such a treasure! Thank you, I will be ordering again and recommending it to others.

Back to great food... Well done was so good.. We orderd take away for the 4th time have not been disappointed with any of the dishes...

Decent quality and taste for the price and food was not super salty. They did not stinge on quantity.

Food was good for a few months after change of ownership, unfortunately quality has gone down rapidly.

Dropped in here a little late on Sunday night hoping to get a table unfortunately the restaurant area was closed however managed to get a takeaway. The food was fresh and delicious and I would definitely use again if in the area.

I ordered a takeaway on Monday 2nd January 2023 and was told it would be delivered in about 30-40 minutes time. It did not come so after waiting for around 75 minutes I phoned to ask about it. The person at the end of the phone said "it will be going out now". After another 40 minutes with no food I phoned again and to my horror the person at the end of the phone stated "I have not received an order or phone call from you this evening". When I said that I could prove the 2 phone calls from the record on my wife's mobile, I was told "yeah, well bring it down pal and I will compare it to my orders in the book, before you start jumping down my throat". This person was absolutely very rude and they had clearly lost my order. She then said, I have my 2 delivery drivers here who have been with me and they will confirm we received no order from you (maybe they should have been out doing deliveries). I have used this place at least once a week since last February (2022) and spent a lot of money there, but I wont be spoken to and treated like that, so Food Lodge "you have lost my business" I do suggest that you carry out some personal effectiveness training with your staff or you may end up losing a lot of customers

I’ll be honest, I hadn’t ordered for a while as felt the standard had slipped however a friend ordered on Thursday night and raved about it and we were not disappointed on Saturday when we got a takeaway. Order was hot and really fresh - delighted!! Booked a table to come for a special meal before Christmas too and can’t wait.

Came here with a person I support and can't rate the service enough. The lady serving us was so friendly and chatting away. Very welcoming, food was served promptly and was really really good.

Honest tasty food which came fresh, hot and plentiful to boot. The sweet and sour Hong Kong Style chicken was packed with crunchy fresh vegetables with chicken cooked in a light crisp batter. Served with coconut rice, this meal was delicious. No issues at my time of visiting despite some of the less favourable reviews, I personally can’t fault the food.

Your takeaway is terrible. Neither of us have finished our food and my partner is now in the bathroom. Greasy, overpriced and horrible. I'm just hoping I don't end up in the bathroom too. Really disappointed. How can you serve such mediocre food. So annoyed, I should have just cooked tonight. This has ruined our night!

Ordered a delivery we tried for the first time, ordered for 7pm, but arrived within 15 minutes meaning we had it arrive earlier than daughters' pizza. What's the point of choosing a delivery time if they send when they want. Also arriving so fast made us doubt if fresh cooked, rice was stodgy and warm not hot. Squid tasted past its best date, and both sweet and sour sauce and Cantonese sauce tasted only of something so sweet and sickly nothing else could be tasted. Was first time and will be last time ordering there

Completely disgusting since the new owners have taken over. delivery turned up after 1.5 hours, stale chips. Still tasted frozen, chicken that looked like it had been ran over by a bus then heat up in warm water. Not even an apology or even refund, they even managed to forget the “free” prawn crackers. Would rather go to lord of the noodles 4doors up 👍

Just had a fabulous meal in the food lodge, it’s great to have a sit in Chinese restaurant that is local, well done to the staff, very attentive and very friendly, if you haven’t tried this restaurant recently, give them a visit it’s very much worth it, food was lovely and cooked to order, a very pleasant evening, well done

Spent quite a lot and have to say I’m very disappointed, munchie box not many chips and didn’t seem fresh at all , I usually go elsewhere but had received a leaflet through the door and like to support local businesses …..

Wine glasses on tables pointless, as there is NO wine available. Chinese, Tiger beer or Becks only choices in that area but doesn't quite hit the mark on a night out. Main meals tasty but portions not over generous considering £11.50 plus rice! Prawn crackers extra £2.70, not gratis. No atmosphere and chilly from door constantly opening. Service friendly but inconsistent.

Updated previous review as the staff have really turned things around are welcoming, friendly and helpful. Food is lovely and always hot. If you are looking for good food and service give them a try 🙂

Visited this restaurant last week for a sit in was fabulous…. However ordered a carry out tonight, no where near as good as when Alan had it?!! New owners?? New chefs?buying cheaper produce, really disappointed in this restaurant was top notch for years, even the cheap tacky menu that comes with your meal sums it up..I don’t think I will use again.. lots of choices in Penicuik now

We were in Penicuik and decided to eat out last minute so went in on spec. The service was fantastic as was the quality of the food. Could not fault it in any way. We are a family of four adults and had a five course banquet. It cost under £108 including a drink. Choice of starter then spring roll or BBQ ribs then any two meals from the menu with rice or noodles then a sweet and tea or coffee to finish. Will be back.

Great service and good food. I took my wife and we both enjoyed the atmosphere and service. Very clean and enjoyable.

I had a takeaway last nigh Fri 7 May from The Food Lodge in Penicuik. It was beef and cashew nuts and fried rice. Later on I got really awful stomach cramps, sickness and diarrhoea all night! First time I have ever had food poisoning and makes me scared now to order a takeaway! Have been there too for sit in meals and its always been amazing food! So surprised as it gets such a good name locally for takeaways. I won't be back.

Food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering! Was never cooked fresh! Could not eat it! Worst Chinese I've ever had! Would not recommend! Lee garden best Chinese in Midlothian.

Best chinese in and around Penicuik!

I love this place! I have been coming here for years, great food and great service. Alright prices but the food is out fast. We have never sat in but collection and delivery is great. I definitely recommend if you want a nice lazy night in this is perfect! One thing to note is once they asked for our pin number for our card, but we just hung up and tried again but the same thing happened. Would definitely recommend but that experience did put us off.

OMG. Arrived withing 5 mins hot and was the best Chinese I have had in a long time! Strongly recommended. Yum yum.

Ordered chicken chow mein and shredded beef in chilli sauce. Chow mein - soggy noodles, tasteless, overcooked rubbery chicken. Shredded beef in chilli sauce - more like shredded beef in ginger sauce.. there was almost a full piece of ginger in it.. no chilli at all and really quite horrible. On the brighter side the beef had a good texture.. i guess ha. Will not be ordering from here again, first and last time. Out of the places in Penicuik i'd say golden bell and jade palace are a bit better..

Have eaten in many times great service...great food...ordered takeaway 21st of March..delivery guy was amazing as I opened the door to delivery my husband fell down the stairs,the delivery guy is a first responder and was great he wouldn't leave until he New my husband was ok and that an ambulance had been phoned..cannot thank him enough for his help..my Chinese was cold but still enjoyed it.

Would like to say we received our meal and it was awful but we didn’t even get it!!!!! Delivered our meal without the lemon sauce, we phoned right away to make them aware, they said they would deliver the sauce but would take an hour!!!! So my husband was to eat his meal on his own and I would have mine an hour later!!!! We are now 2 hours down the line after several phone calls later with no meal!!!!! When we call we get “whatever” from the owner and she hangs up!!!!!! Worst customer service we have possibly ever had!!!!

Long established Chinese restaurant which goes a bit under the radar.Very busy take away trade which was a good sign as we entered.Service was excellent, each course arrived quickly, service was very professional. There were no hitches. Good well priced quality Chablis, and main courses well presented. Substantial portions and excellent value for money.Well done. Quality and service like we experienced will ensure a healthy trade.

Lemon chicken was so tough it was inedible. Even a steak knife struggled to get through it so what chance have human teeth got. Sorry to write this as I used to love the food lodge, don't know what happened but its gone way downhill

We really enjoyed the food and were very well looked after. Would happily go again and use their takeaway/home delivery service! It is also listed as the Ford Lodge to avoid confusion.

Christmas Eve and knew I had a lot to do next day. Decided on a carry out from The Food Lodge Penicuik. Not disappointed food delivered very quickly with exactly what I had ordered.Food absolutely delicious, piping hot and good portion size.In the years I have been using the Food Lodge prices increases have been very fair.

Excellent food and I would recommend choosing one of the set menus (we chose menu A) and excellent service with byob which was a bonus. Definitely worth a visit

Went here last Friday for takeaway.Staff very polite and fast. Meal was done in minute's so clearly not freshly produced which I was hoping for as it has a resteraunt attached. I will come again to sit in so well done guys was still the best meal for Chinese I've had in Penicuik

Clean . Staff attentive food good value

Food good but normally you get a good size of bag of chips we normally share . This time it's just under half a bag . Don't get me wrong the food is good but obviously portion size is not the best.

Ate here on Saturday 3 August 2019. Such a long time since we'd had food from here. Decided to sit in. Nothing bad to say. Great food. Fantastic, friendly service. Very reasonable pricing. Really mustn't wait as long before returning.

Food was mediocre to say the least. Takeaway prices high in comparison to surrounding ones. Felt it was city centre prices.....not needed in penicuik!

Food and service always good my favourite up to now are the ribs and Lemon chicken, now I favour the light battered king prawns.

Food was hot and fresh but we found it pretty tasteless. We were also shocked at the prices. Come on guys....this is Penicuik not Edinburgh 🤨

The food lodge used to be the family favourite for years but the last couple times we've tried it its been the literal worst. Every dish was tasteless, filled with cashew nuts, tiny pieces of rubbery chicken, even the prawn crackers were chewy and weird. Won't be ordering again unfortunately.

The service seemed polite enough but we were given the wrong take away meal. Rather than face an hour long return trip to get it sorted, we tried what we were given - even though it was obviously an inferior choice. Bad move! Bland, tasteless dishes. No spring rolls but soggy chips (I ask you, who orders chips with a Chinese?). We won't be returning.

Polite, kind and so very helpful on the phone plus top quality food. Excellent, fresh and always tasty. Sometimes we have our order delivered which is usually prompt and when possible we collect. Either way, we have never had a bad experience with this first class restaurant, Tonight, we placed a particularly large order for 13 of us yet our food was prepared and ready for uplift within half an hour. Everyone was most impressed with the quality, flavoursome Chinese dishes and the excellent value. I cannot recommend this top class establishment enough. It stands head and shoulders above all other Chinese restaurants/takeaways in our areacand beyond.

Just back from holiday and decided to get a takeaway delivered from food lodge Penicuick after a pleasing visit a month or so ago. Ordered 1 chicken noodle soup, 1 tofu curry, 1 salted pepper chicken, 1 salted pepper prawn, 2 portions fried rice, 2 portions of chips 1 portion of soft noodles and portion of satay sauce. Cost including delivery to just over 2 miles away slightly over £36. Paid gave a tip and when we served it noticed only 2 main courses arrived. Tofu curry was missing.

Enough is enough - had to say something about this evenings meal. I’ve had a few poor meals from the Food Lodge Penicuik, but this evenings carry out, pork curry, was inedible. The staff are nice but the food leaves a lot to be desired! One of the reviewers said that the Food Lodge was ‘the best in Penicuik ‘. This does say much for the others. It used to be excellent but standards have dropped. I won’t be ordering from the Food Lodge again.
