As one earlier contributor mentioned it is ‘card only’ but is clearly stated on the door. What a wonderful pub this is. It’s like stepping back in time and has a super range of draft ales, craft ales, ciders and some stouts too. The beer was excellent and served by knowledgable bar staff who clearly know their subject. The interior of the pub retains a quirky railway theme and it was spotlessly clean and had a good trade mid afternoon on a wet Tuesday. There is plenty of choice for non beer drinkers too. A lovely range of bar snacks available too. A real gem of a pub and I’d strongly recommend a visit to this CAMRA award winning venue.

Didn't get chance to find out. Got to the bar to find it was card only, and we only had cash. One of those things, but was disappointed to get a sarcastic "Have a great day" from the lad behind the bar as we left. Wont return.

Loads of beers to choose from but all taste very similar, either brown or light golden, all i tried tasted the same and not kept that well. Had a pint of their own brew, sperry whistle and it was soapy and a bit tasteless and not up to the standard of thornbridge who it came from. Lots of expensive fancy beers like beaverton (heineken) I.e. giant beer corporations, wine range was OK according to my friend. We went on a night where they had street food in the courtyard, nice idea but it was mayhem, messy woth loads of leftovers lying around, and no where to sit, we had to clear our own table Also... tons of dogs everywhere to trip over. I don't have anything against dogs in pubs but this was just ridiculous. No staff to be seen apart from one who i am told was the landlady who was mardy and actually quite unfriendly, felt like she was on patrol of the place. Not a great evening sad to say. Hope this place picks up again and stops resting on its laurels!

My ideal pub. Great selection of cask and craft beers and all reasonably priced. The ales I tried were in first class condition, the landlady took time to have a natter and the place oozed traditional style, comfort, warmth and character. There was a good offering of pork pies, freshly made cobs etc. Outside a quirky railway-themed beer garden with plenty of under cover drinking areas. No wonder The Final Whistle continually wins awards, it deserves all the praise it receives.

Saturday mid afternoon and not a person in sight, totally empty……. should have left at that point. We went for a cheeseboard and pork pie and it was terrible , served in a take out box even though we were eating in. The place was cold and the atmosphere was dire, no log fire burning and no ambiance at all.

I moved house a couple of years ago, partly on the strength of being closer to this fabulous pub! I have nothing but praise for The Final Whistle-friendly , fantastic staff, lovely, comfortable surroundings , great beer, wine, cider and pork pies. This is not a gastro pub, I’m pleased to say and does not have a plethora of screens and machines. The background music is great and just at the right level. There’s a real fire and outside areas too. There’s a popular quiz night. This pub has won a large number of CAMRA awards, which are well deserved. It is situated next to an old railway line, now a popular trail, and is fitted out on a tasteful railway theme. I wish The Final Whistle every success for the future. Go and support this wonderful pub!

Pub serves a variety of good real ales and nice bar meals. Only thing that spoils it is the number of dogs allowed inside rather than restricting them to the courtyard. I suffer with asthma and it doesn't help when a big, warm, hairy, St Bernard starts barking next to you.

This is a proper pub not a restaurant in the guise of a pub. The choice of beers is good with a few regular brews always on and the remainder of real ales changing frequently. There are ciders and what looks like a decent selection of gins. It has tiled floors so attractive to walkers and particularly dog walkers which means it can get a bit smelly at times and although I dont mind dogs it can be overpowering when busy. Pork pies and selection of rolls available.

Great pub with a good selection of beers and ciders to suit all tastes. Basic food is available and is good. Plenty of outdoor seating although I found the railway theme a little cheesy in parts. A couple of reviews state that the building was formerly a railway station. This is incorrect as it was built as an inn to serve the nearby station which was situated a little way further down the road and on the opposite side. In one direction the former railway line is now a bridleway and nature trail. Until recent years known as the Newcastle Arms and I believe previously as the New Inn.

Former country railway station becomes pub. Whilst that's not a recent transition, what was once Southwell station became The Newcastle Arms and is now The Final Whistle. The nod to the days of railways remains but in a tasteful way. The thing that makes the 'The Whistle' is that it's a drinkers pub with an ever evolving selection of real ales (of all colours, tastes and strengths), lagers and ciders. Apart from a delicious selection of different types of pork pie, cheeseboard or filled rolls; it's avoided the temptation to ruin a good pub and become an eatery.....like most other formerly good pubs have done. This is a drinkers pub with a lovely atmosphere. Frequented mainly by the middle aged but is kept very fresh with all the bar staff being very pleasant and well mannered 20-somethings. The beer garden is well stocked with seating, floral displays and people. There is a separate bar in the beer garden that serves a further selection of different beers to that of the main pub bar.

I've lived in Southwell for over 40 years. I'm in my 40's. The Final Whistle is a fantastic pub, however the pub is seemingly run by rude, grumpy teenagers who think the world owes them something and that the customer is definitely not always right. If you can nurture a smile out of ANY of their staff, you'd be lucky. Their arrogant, awful approach to customer service is alienating more than just me in the town. Avoid. There are other pubs really putting in an effort to gain customers in the town. With regret, I will not be using the pub again until I know their staff have changed.

Living in Southwell, I have used this pub on a good number of occasions and had enjoyed it very much until this last Sunday evening. Beer, atmosphere, staff had always been great. However, on the aforementioned pre-Bank Holiday evening, I had been happily sitting in the beer garden with my wife and my two nine-year old daughters when, at 9pm, we were suddenly asked to leave. To say that I was flabbergasted is an understatement! I mentioned to the lady who asked us to leave - very politely it has to be said - that I had been there before with my daughters after that time and had not been asked to leave before. A new policy apparently. I did also point out what I consider to be a gross ignominy: that dogs are welcome to sit outside after 9pm but not (well-behaved) children! What a farce!

This is really good pub which we visit whenever we are in Southwell. It is well run, has a great atmosphere and a huge selection of well kept beer. BUT, and it’s a very big but, the dog loving fraternity are in danger of spoiling the pub for everyone else. Frequently there is a cacophony of dogs barking. They often lay all over the floor and sniff and slobber over customers. This is not right. Some minimum standards need to be applied and enforced.

No doubt about it this is a great boozer, but out of control dogs spoil it. We went last Friday at around 6pm (beer great) but decided to leave after the first pint because one of the mutts wouldn't stop barking. Owner and staff apparently oblivious to problem. We're about to give up going because we don't like being sniffed and licked by unhygienic, smelly pooches. Can we have a dog free area please?

I went on sun and they did my daughter's meal wring and then they didn't have any wraps left for her to have it so had to get a refund. Then I ordered my food at 11.27 and asked for a cooked breakfast to be told that had now stopped and was now a carvery which I ordered with a take out coke. Told they would bring out my meat for me. Waited 30 mins for this only not had it brought to me. And during this time I ordered a burger for one of our party and he received that and o was still waiting .Went to complain and ask for my money back only to be told by the the staff that I didn't order one and she was really rude. I explained it was the other girl who served me and told her how I paid and what money I paid with consisted of. Only to be told again I hadn't ordered anything. Then she spoke to the other who confirmed this and she then said she would give me a refund no apology or anything.

Had been meaning to give this place a go for weeks, as we constantly drove past the sign. Never got the opportunity for one reason or another. So we took a chance and gave it a whirl on a weekday. It was very nice, welcoming, etc, etc. However, the prices did seem way off the scale for what appeared when the order arrived. It was very expensive and not THAT good to be honest. You don't mind paying a premium when the quality is top notch, but this really wasn't. No better than what you would expect to find in a supermarket and twice the cost. We left bitterly disappointed and still a bit hungry.
