Sunny Saturday lunch. We arrived late and they were very accommodating. Excellent poppy seed bread to start. Short rib starter which was a little fatty. Vegetarian starter tasted too smoky. Venison main was fairly good - a little overcooked and cold but sides were excellent. Fantastic service and nearly 5* but not quite good enough.

It is quite an achievement for a restaurant to keep up high standards for over a decade, but I was more than pleasantly surprised that the Felin Fach Giffin outside Brecon continues to serve up winning dinners 10 years after reviewing it for a county magazine that is now dead and buried. Back in 2013 Felin Fach Griffin was the evening icing on the cake after a day up the Brecon Beacons Pen y Fan and passing the Devil's Pool and the Tommy Jones memorial on the way down. This time it was a wider family get together after Libanus Show, and viewing the Cold War observation bunker that a cousin had restored as his Covid project. This time round it was baba ganoush, followed by a deliciously devised lamb dish, rounded off with a warming crumble. The food presentation showed care and art in the kitchens. So to compare with 10 years ago I attach my daughter's restaurant review (when she was 13 years old). Felin Fach Griffin is still the best place to relax and dine after a good walk in the Beacons, and fulfills all the expectations of a gastro pub with lots of laurels to lie on.

We had an absolutely lovely weekend here. The rooms were lovely and very comfortable. The food was amazing, great service, the staff were friendly and helpful. Despite being near a busy road it was very quiet at night and we slept well. The hotel is a prime location for exploring the area. We like it so much we have booked to go back in February.

For my mother’s 50th, we gathered as a family at The Felin Fach Griffin—a party of three meat lovers and one dedicated vegan. Each of us indulged in a three-course meal, and not a single bite was left behind. This establishment, steeped in the charm of a 17th-century coaching inn, is indeed a place of great respect and quiet elegance. As you step through the door, you're greeted by a cozy lounge and a dining area that exudes both restraint and warmth. The walls, adorned with exquisite paintings of the surrounding landscape, captivate the eye and set a tranquil tone for the evening. The staff were impeccable, with service timed to perfection, allowing us to savor each moment together as we reflected on the year gone by. The food was a true delight—each dish a harmonious blend of flavors that lingered on the palate, evoking anticipation for the next course. Our compliments to Chef Gwennan Davies, whose culinary prowess left us craving more. An exceptional chef, she has mastered the art of leaving a lasting impression, not just on the taste buds, but on the memory itself.

2 weeks after posting a review highlighting best thick cut chips we have ever tasted we eagerly returned once again driving over an hour from Cardiff for lunch. Unfortunately said thick cut chips arrived on our plates disguised as chewy potato wedges, they were revolting and a huge disappointment. There was no excuse for shoddy and rushed preparation we were the 1st ticket at service with only 2 other couples seated.

I know The Griffin regularly gets really good reviews but they are all well deserved. We went to North Wales for a long week-end, had a light lunch on the Thursday on the way up and a fabulous Sunday lunch on the way home. We weren't sure of our timings coming home, so didn't book until the Saturday for the Sunday lunch. They were full but phoned me back on the Sunday morning to say they could fit us in at 3pm. We rarely eat three courses these days, especially after being away and having had a full hotel breakfast, so we did our normal trick of sharing a starter , a main course each and sharing a sweet. You couldn't fault anything, I had the pork Sunday lunch and my partner the Beef, both gorgeous and the Leek gratin between us was fabulous. The staff are terrific, relaxed , calm, but still dealing with a full Sunday lunch restaurant. It really is a favourite stopping off place for anything from morning coffee to a full three course meal... we will be back, thank you, N

This was a disappointing experience, in terms both of the food and the service. Our party of four were only given three sets of menus and had to ask for another twice. It then became apparent that one of the set lunch menus was incorrect. The waiter wasn't at all apologetic. The bread for the table was underwhelming in quality and quantity. We had three starters, the soup and makarel were pleasant but the piece of salmon was very scanty. The mains were small. My bass and accompaniaments were tiny and underseasoned and the dish felt over priced. The steaks our friends ordered were very chewy. Steak knives were not provided and had to be requested. We all had puddings which were good. Overall we felt the service was only adequate and had we been dining without our friends we would have asked for the service charge to be taken off the bill. We were also very unhappy to find that the wine served as the requested house red was the most expemsive by glass on the menu. This is a play that always leaves an unpleasant taste. We had tried on a couple of occasions to book without success and had high hopes due to the popularity of the pub. However we won't be returning and feel that this was an over priced and disappointing lunch.

I was recommended to try this pub however this is not your normal pub food. The standard and attention to detail are second to none. We hadn't made a reservation, and we were lucky to grab the last table. Do book! The surroundings are picturesque. The minute you walk in, you know you're in for a treat.! We all ordered of the lunch fixed menu. A homemade focaccia bread arrived as a little teaser. You know that if home-made bread arrives and it's yummy , the rest will be good too! The cauliflower and caerphilly cheese struck just the right balance of both. The roasted pumpkin and burrata was a fabulous combination. The Glamorgan sausage was new to us and very nice. The lamb faggot was excellent. (Strong liver flavour). The side order of asparagus was cooked al dente and the triple chips did not disappoint. The crumble was good but the star was the Welsh speciality Bara Brith: raisin Teabread. It was my guests favourite meal during their 4 days. It's not a cheap lunch with drinks and a few sides but still, given the quality of the ingredients, the flavours and presentation... it's money well spent.

We have been going to the Griffin for years. However this time around, the food didn't have it's usual sparkle . Sadly the food was more mundane and felt more like pub grub. Booked a table the day before and turned up 20 minutes early. Greeted warmly by a member of staff and shown immediately to our table. Beautiful open fire with the autumnal smell of burning logs. Menu offered and explained not to order the bread as it was automatically complimentary. Water offered as well. Waiter came over and asked regarding drinks - both ready to order as well - not a problem. Good selection of starters, main courses and desserts. Both of us opted for the beef. Waiter checked if it was acceptable as the beef was served pink. Food arrived promptly and was delicious. Two thick slices of beef, huge Yorkshire pudding, roasties, cabbage, mash and cauliflower. Absolutely delicious. Ordered desserts - lemon posset with blood orange sorbet, plum tart with almond ice cream. The desserts were absolutely gorgeous and as a result didn't last very long!!!. We haven't been here for a number of years but without a doubt we will be back as soon as possible. Fantastic food in a lovely relaxed atmosphere with such fantastic staff. Dioch yn fawr.

We stopped off here after a long walk in the morning so were absolutely famished. Luckily this great gastropub more than hit the spot. Our welcome was warm, in keeping with service that was throughout attentive and helpful. We chose starters and mains from a menu mixing familiar standards with some more interesting choices. For us that included heritage tomatoes and burrata, white crab salad and mussels - all excellent and beautifully presented. We were in truth less adventurous with our mains, three of our party of four having chosen traditional fish and chips and one choosing pea risotto. The fish and chips was excellent, the fish well cooked (and not too much batter) and the chips obviously genuinely home-made and very filling. Next time we're in the neighbourhood we'll definitely return.

When you hear the words we have a new chef then you do not know what to expect. Sadly this was not a good omen. The ingredients were fine we mainly had Fish mains but the accompanying sauces and veg just did not work. Our starters were ok, but just ok. We selected 2 deserts , the old favourite Sticky Toffee Pudding has disappeared with the previous Chef, alas. The service was a little haphazard but the 2 v young lads did their best but are obviously not trained. The morning breakfast was Ok but the ground staff had the strimmer's out from about 9.30 so if the intention was to clear the restaurant they succeeded.

The hotel we stayed in Builth for the Royal Welsh closed in December, and we found ourselves further away from the showgrounds. Felt fortunate to get a reservation since the reviews were all great. We arrived and were greeted and seated very quickly. The waitress explained the menu and gave us time to decide what to order. The entire meal was very tasty, but the appetizer was to die for! It was a smoked salmon, and is one of the best fish dishes I have ever enjoyed. The rest of the meal was very tasty, but I still have great memories about that salmon! Both time staff were lovely, we thought the very young lad bringing food from the kitchen and clearing the tables was particularly good - my children were very impressed with him!The food was always lovely. Our least favourite of the dishes was the steak (my son had this) - in hindsight a minute steak seemed a bit of a boring option on an otherwise really interesting menu. On our second visit we especially enjoyed the katsu cod and monkfish starter. Great childrens options available as well including a tomato soup starter that both my children said was the best they had ever had! There was a good choice of wines and cocktails - and also a lovely selection of non-alcoholic drinks which is really nice to see.All in all, would definitely return and recommend.

Beautifully presented, tasty and well cooked. Service was fantastic, too.Only a couple of drawbacks - the rhubarb crumble dessert is served cold. We were told this was correct but it wasn't mentioned anywhere on the menu so I think it would be worth making a note of this on the menu or mentioning to customers when ordering. Believe we were also due to get a free beer as we were staying at a partner accomodation, but this was missed - didn't want to make a fuss of it as it wasn't a big deal and I'm sure it would have been sorted if I had mentioned it. The owner did, however, remember that I had mentioned it was our honeymoon when booking and came over to offer congratulations! If you're in the area (or even if not), I'd recommend the Griffin for a lovely, well cooked meal.

This pub was recommended to us by our hosts at Argoed Barns. And wow, it didn't disappoint! With an imaginative menu it was a real treat! So, highly recommended indeed and the staff were efficient and friendly too!

We dined last evening. Charming staff and we'll timed service. Utterly delicious food. We had beetroot salad followed by stone bass and cheesecake/sorbet and hake followed by lamb rumo and kofta and cheeseboard. All superb and beautifully presented. Wines very reasonably priced. We started with delicious pale ale and a vg cava, then a nice dry Riesling and a light, very nice Pinot Noir. Worth every penny and the ambience was also great

Good starter but main course disappointing. We had hake and cottage pie for starter. Both tasty. Main course we both chose steak. No chunky chips left so served cold dry fries. Steak was tasty. It very tough. Couldn’t chew. Vegetables were extra. Overall expensive at £30 pp plus veg for average pub steak.

We booked for dinner, or supper as they call it, as we believed this place was popular. We were shown into a fairly small room with 3 tables. The food is not usual pub food, the menu changes every day, but more a classy brasserie style food in a pub. It was very good. Service was very good too. It has a pretty large car park.

We were really looking forward to dining at the Felin Fach but it fell short of the mark. £38 for three courses of what one would hope would be a flavoursome adventure in mid-range dining. Poor seasoning, overcooked fish and few combined flavours that made it anything more than average pub food trying to be fine dining. We thought it was outrageous that on a set menu you had to pay £4.50 to get a portion of jersey potatoes to accompany a fish dish that had no carbohydrate! Furthermore, they were awful! How can you go wrong with some boiled potatoes. They were in dirty skins with the eyes still in, not in any way fresh and not dressed with butter or any seasoning, dry and hard as stones. My partner was asked if he wanted boiled potatoes or chips, so he opted for the potatoes, but no mention that it would be £4.50 extra. What a rip off! The waiter should at least say, do you want any extra side dishes, which gives the customer a chance to enquire whether the main meal comes with potatoes. It felt like they were just trying to squeeze extra cash out of you. Waiting service was a bit slovenly to be honest, not particularly cheerful. We also had to chase up the aperitifs and the water. A team of fairly young waiters that appeared like they had just turned up for the their first shift. We also stood waiting at the door for seating. No Covid care either - we were not asked to track and trace or encouraged to use the sanitizer, which we did anyway.Needless to say, we will not be returning, there are better and more reasonably priced establishments all over mid-Wales where you get better value, higher quality cuisine and good service. If you want finer dining, and we did that night, and you don't mind paying a bit extra, then this is definitely not the place for you. We dine out regularly and my advice is this, if you've ever eaten well, you'll not be fooled by the Felin Fach Griffin Restaurant. Nearly £100 down the drain (for two people with one aperitif each and no wine).Go somewhere else.

Great food, wine and beer. Lovely atmosphere. Good service. Really helpful advice about and consideration of allergies which meant my partner had a good choice of food.

Was really looking forward to this but sadly the evening did not live up to expectations from the start. On arrival parking was easy in their own smart car park. However when we arrived at the door we waited while a nearby waiter was settling a split bill at the table nearby. At no time did he acknowledge our presence. So given Covid rules, we waited for some time before another member of staff finally clocked that the people at the door who were on time for their booking might be waiting for attention. The menu looked very good. However the service was at a level I would to be expected at an average cafe rather than a premium restaurant - just a bit indifferent. The pea mousse starter was very good but the beetroot terrine was disappointing tasting of sliced beetroot and nothing else. Main course bass was tasty but the broccoli ordered arrived as green beans. Furthermore, the truffle and parmesan chips tasted burnt and frankly looked like MacDonalds on a bad day, but tasted worse - certainly no evidence of coming anywhere near any form of truffle derivative.Pudding was not as described and we had to ask for that to be remedied. While we were there, we heard another diner complain that their main dish was not what was on the menu either. Finally, on leaving the restaurant there was no goodbye or thank you. Now, it's clearly difficult to get everything right during Covid etc and the staff were probably new, but we dined at other places nearby that did not seem to suffer from these problems. Therefore we decided that sadly this would not be a restaurant we would return to which is a shame but you live and learn.

We've eaten at the Griffin several times and were glad to make it our first restaurant meal since the most recent lockdown. The menu, preparation and service were excellent as usual; the drinks menu is also great and includes some delicious, inventive non-alcoholic cocktails. We'll definitely be back whenever we're passing.

Whilst on holiday in the area, we ate at the FFG twice. Both meals were excellent and we would highly recommend. The staff were attentive but relaxed making you feel very much at ease.nice touch of complimentary bread with beetroot hummous. really enjoyed the shepherds pie starter . at £38 for three courses this represented good value for money and the extensive wine list with lots available by the glass was very fairly priced.

What a lovely evening we had. The excellent welcome and also the safe surroundings. Excellent food by Nick the chef was greatly enjoyed. The restaurant staff were so helpful and the service was excellent. Well done to them all after what has been a very difficult time for the industry. It can't be easy getting going again after such a long absence from the work environment.

Pre booked table in advance for Sunday lunch. When we arrived we where rather shocked to see how busy it was. Had the staff not been wearing masks it would have felt like a normal pre Covid experience, the tables were definitely not 2 metre apart but we haven't eaten out for a while and rules change I would hate to accuse them of anything, but we did feel slightly uncomfortable but we were so hungry we decided to take a risk! The service and food was exceptional, considering how busy it was the staff were on the ball and we didn't have to wait long for anything. The food was amazing they best we have eaten for a long while.

After the recent indoor Covid restrictions had lifted, my mum's birthday was a perfect opportunity to go out for lunch and enjoy a lovely meal together as a family. So on 31st May, we visited the Felin Fach Griffin for lunch. As we arrived, a lady who I presume to be the manager showed us to our table and asked us to scan a QR code for track and trace. As I'm not completely clued up on how these work, and not wanting to be messing about on my phone whilst trying to enjoy some valuable family time, I asked the manager if we could just fill in a sheet. I was surprised when this was met by a bit of a huff and a "yeah I'll get a sheet". Afterwards I also thought that the only details they required were a name, mobile number and email address, all of which my mum had given upon booking, so surely they could just transfer this information to a track and trace system to take the hassle away from the customer upon arrival? Anyway, we ordered some drinks to start, two G&T's and one of the medium non-alcoholic ciders. Soon after we'd ordered our drinks, the waitress comes straight back and says that they do not do a medium non-alcoholic cider. I said that I'd seen it in the menu, to which she said they only did a sweeter non-alcoholic cider, so I re-opened the drinks menu to double check. She said something along the lines of 'look, I'll show you' to which I pointed out, possibly slightly embarrassingly for her, that under the 'Non-alcoholic Drinks' heading was a cider entitled 'Medium Cider' (exactly what I had ordered). No apology for the confusion, she just turned around and went straight back to the bar. Moving on to the menus. Now maybe this is an up and coming new way of laying out a menu but personally it didn't make much sense to me! Instead of the conventional 'Starters' 'Mains' and 'Desserts' headings, the menu had three vegetarian dishes, followed by three fish dishes, followed by three meat dishes. The only way to determine if they were a starter or a main course was by the price. There was then a section at the bottom which was 'From the garden' which was a list of around 8 dishes, all of which were vegetarian. Now I love when restaurants use fresh, home grown ingredients and feel that it's a great asset to be able to use vegetables that have pretty much come straight out of the ground and onto a plate, but surely they should be incorporated into every dish that is on the menu rather than just having a list of vegetarian dishes? Maybe that's where we made an error though as instead of opting for the vegetarian dishes we all chose the salt cod fritters to start followed by two chicken burgers and one pork dish. Prior to our starters arriving, we were brought some homemade bread (which turned out to be very tasty and in fact one of the only things that has saved this review from being a 1/5). However, the bread was served on a small wooden board and as there was three of us, we had six pieces of bread piled on, along with two or three squares of butter. As we hadn't been given any side plates, I asked one of the waitresses for some, to which I was met with 'O, usually everyone just digs in on the board'. I accept that if there were just two people, this would be absolutely fine, however for more than two, you really do need a side plate each, otherwise you're all trying to butter your bread on top of the other pieces of bread, or even worse, trying to butter them on the table! Also, staff should always try to make the customer feel as welcome and relaxed as possible, and this comment just made us feel like the odd ones out and that we were wrong for asking. Ten minutes later, there was no sign of the side plates so we gave up waiting. To be fair, the waitress did come to apologise that she had forgotten the side plates when we were halfway through our salt cod fritter starters, which, by the way, were fairly tasty, but nothing memorable. Before ordering the main courses, we ordered a couple of glasses of wine, one red and one white. Disappointingly, the white wasn't at all cold, in fact I think it had been out of the fridge for a good while as it was basically room temperature. Then, when the main courses arrived, we were immediately underwhelmed. Although the pork dish looked appetising, it again wasn't anything memorable and to be honest, could've been made just as good, if not better, at home. The chicken burger however, I would go as far as to say that it was the worst thing I have ever been served in a restaurant. It arrived as two upturned burger buns, one topped with some homemade slaw and a fried, coated piece of chicken, and the other with a blob of green puree and another piece of chicken. There was then a small pot of triple cooked chips and a small saucer of this green puree. The bun I would have thought had been frozen as it tasted like it had been defrosted and then lightly grilled so there was no real flavour to it. The slaw was fine, as were the chips. The chicken however, although very moist inside, was greasy and tasteless. Everything also seemed to be over salted, and there was no flavour or any kind of spices in the fried chicken coating to take your taste buds away from just a pure taste of salt! As for the green puree, I regretted tasting a little bit on the end of my fork as soon as I put it in my mouth. The only way I can describe it was like a thick, salty mayonnaise with hints of pea running through it. Absolutely disgusting. We decided we might as well take a look at the dessert menus, A. because we still wanted to try and enjoy some of the meal for my mums birthday, and B. because we wanted something to try and take the salty, greasy taste out of our palates! However, after clearing our main course plates, I would have expected the waitress to come back with some dessert menus. Instead, we were left sitting for over twenty minutes with none of the staff even looking our way or checking to see if we were OK. In the end, we had to ask for some menus to be brought over to us. I think this was unfortunately the final straw as at this point we had been sitting in the restaurant for over an hour and forty-five minutes and decided we would probably be happier going home and enjoying a Magnum out of the freezer, rather than risking spending more money on a dessert that could well have been below average!Overall, as the title suggests, we were incredibly disappointed with the level of service and the quality of the food. I understand that maybe a lot of the staff could have been new now that they've reopened indoors and may have had to recruit new waiters, however the lack of attention and also the attitude towards customers needs serious improvement. I really don't think that we were unreasonable in any way, but with the restaurant as quiet as it was, the mistakes were hard not to overlook and couldn't be blamed on short staffing or a busy service. I also noticed on the website that they have recently employed a new head chef who started in April 2021, and having visited the Felin Fach once before when the food was of a good standard, I have a bad feeling that this new chef may quickly spoil the good reputation that this restaurant has held in the past.

I’m so happy to be able to experience this wonderful restaurant once again. I had forgotten just how special this place is and how amazing their food is. They had a fantastic choice of dishes and have a good range of veggie and vegan dishes. The wine choice is also excellent and they sell a good range of wines by the half bottle. There is also a very good range of non-alcoholic drinks

We visited post lockdown. The menu was reduced (as was expected) and I was disappointed we couldn’t relax in front of the fire pre-meal (courtesy of safe distancing rules) but neither of these spoiled our lovely evening. The staff were attentive, informed and courteous. The meal was thoroughly enjoyable. Can’t remember everyone’s order but we had a varied selection with no complaints. We’ll be back ASAP.

I'm surprised at some of the reviews below. In these strange and unprecedented times I think this restaurant is doing an amazing job. We were there on the weekend, and the food and ambience was just right. The fires were lit, the service was great, the food delicious. Portions maybe a little smaller than I remember but not signifigantly so and hey I think we need to cut everyone a bit of slack at the moment or we will lose some of our favourite places...

This used to be a lovely experience but the service has really slipped. When we arrived there was nobody to seat us, just one lad who had to go off looking for the Basil Fawlty-esque manager who was nowhere to be seen. So while we waited we ordered drinks from the depressed, tattooed barman only discover the drinks were flat. When we did eventually get seated, you could sense the staff aren’t particularly happy (probably understaffed) and the Fawlty guy just seemed irritated by his iPad menu all the time. The food was good but it took an age to arrive, and each of our meals arrived at different times with long waits between which is always annoying. They apologised for the wait but I got the sense it’s standard practice. It seemed really poor considering there were only 3 of us and hardly anybody else in the restaurant. I can’t imagine what it’s like when it’s busy. Apart from the cosy fireplace seating, the rest of the restaurant seems bleak. There’s no music to fill the awkward atmosphere, the windowsills are dirty, it all just seems a bit dated now. Big shame, especially as it’s not exactly cheap. They’re lucky they have a lovely view to keep people distracted.

Booked a room & confirmed to then be emailed a day later it was cancelled. Telephoned to get a very arrogant receptionist who tried to lie to me about the reason. Not even the slightest apology for ruining my weekend. Shocking. If I had not spotted the email I would of travelled 150 miles for nothing!

Second time I’ve had chips from here that were Raw, pale and taste like cleaning sanitiser - was sick for 3 days following. Also ordered a burger - raw in the middle and mould on the bun. Sausage had split open (oil too hot) and full of grease. Avoid avoid avoid. Awful pricing, terrible quality.
