Excellent food with lovely, comfortable and warm atmosphere. Staff were polite, attentive and extremely helpful. Under new management now and would highly recommend.

We received a warm welcome upon arrival,m. There was a lovely atmosphere, everyone appeared to be having a good time. The carvery was delicious, there was your meat options, as a table we tried them all. Great home cooked roasties and Yorkshires puds and a good range of veg, the gravy was delicious too. There was a good selection of desserts and again the portions were generous. Tracy looked after us well, she was funny and friendly which lead to engaging interactions. We went as a family of three generations and everyone was happy, especially the little ones with their scrummy ice colds to finish. We will definitely be returning!

What an excellent meal this evening, with extra touches such as a red rose on the tables, sweets, and a welcome prosecco and olives. We had the mixed fish starter which was very generous and lovely, followed by a huge ribeye steak, and then cheese and port.. all for £56 for the two of us. Thanks for a great evening.

Absolutely delicious Sunday roast. Can quite honestly say the best we have had ina long time. Plentiful choice of meat and vegetables. Large portions. Friendly, hard working staff, cosy atmosphere. Will definitely return.

Lovely welcome warm friendly village pub. Great choice of meats and plenty of vegetables to choose from gluten free Yorkshire and gluten free gravy. Cannot ask for better worth the distance travelled. Superb

This lunch was booked by a family member but when we said to others where we were going they expressed surprise which turned out to be fully justified. We arrived a few minutes early and although the pub is tiny (very tiny), it was almost empty which seemed odd for a Sunday. We were shown to our table and our drinks order was taken by a young lad who was reasonably polite, obviously didn't have any experience. Also, it was the first time I have ever been served by someone wearing a full football kit!! He soon returned to say they had no Rose wine. A pub with no Rose??!!! We were gruffly summoned to queue for the carvery. I chose the Turkey, which consisted of two pieces, each well over half an inch thick and was 'carved' and dumped on my plate without a word. The vegetables......! I'm not quite sure if it was swede or sweet potato but it was loaded with so much pepper it had us all choking! The runner beans were barely cooked and the roast potatoes had a very odd taste like old chip fat and were barely edible. I am sure they had been deep fried as they were extremely greasy, rock hard and not pleasant at all. We ate what we could but even before all of the party had finished eating the young lad started clearing plates which I asked him to stop. We then sat there with empty glasses and eventually asked for the bill. We asked for the bill to be split three ways on card payment which seemed to cause major confusion. We ended up going back to another pub for a couple more drinks. There was no acknowledgement from the staff as we left - very unprofessional. We all commented that we had a very greasy/oily taste in our mouths which you certainly should not have after a roast dinner. We definitely wont be returning and should have heeded the warnings about the food and service and cancelled but we will definitely not be returning.

Lovely old building, really nice country pub, a rare thing nowadays. Brilliant landlord, friendly staff, good fresh ale and a Sunday lunch to die for. 10 out of 10.

Checked opening times on website, before driving 8 miles to the the Fat Landlord for lunch. It was closed. Nobody answered the phone. Messaged , but no response. Looked a bit derelict anyway, so maybe I got lucky

This is the third time we have visited The Fat Landlord and I have to say, when we first went there, it was delicious. However, the second time we visited, although the carvery was tasty, it was only luke warm to say the least. Giving it the benefit of the doubt, we thought we’d give it another chance and, to be honest, the carvery was again, Luke warm at best, the meat virtually cold! In addition, the plates should be kept hot when hot food is put on them, but again, they were stone cold Overall, it’s a damn shame, as the pub itself, is really nice and the staff are friendly and very attentive. Sadly, we won’t be returning, which I feel, is such a shame

We often visit the fat landlord and recommend the carvery (you have to book in advance as they get booked up). The veg and potatoes were excellent, those other reviews must have just been unlucky, flowers on the tables, music playing, a really nice atmosphere.

I thought I would treat my mum for mother day . And was recommended the fat landlord for a carvery the pub didn’t disappoint friendly staff . We were booked in for 12 in the morning the food was excellent and value for money.

This is a lovely village pub. With a separate bar and restaurant. We went for the carvery, which was great value. The only thing was the potatoes were very over cooked.. quite surprised they served them! It would be great if they played some background music, as when people left it became very quiet. Also candles on the tables would a nice touch, it just needs a little TLC. The wine choice was a bit limited, and there was no cheese option for afters. We would go back and I hope these comments help.

We were greeted by an angry man. We felt like we were in the way!! The beef was over cooked. Vegetables over cooked and mushy. Not a very nice experience. Do not recommend .

Stopped here off the M1 for a much needed Sunday Lunch - the barmaid told us they were fully booked, so we asked for a bar meal (as we had made a special effort to come off the motorway to find them!) They said they couldn't do a bar meal but we could have the carver as a take away. We bought a beer, got our "takeaway" and asked if we could sit at some empty tables to eat it. No, we couldn't! Bemused we sat in our car in the car park to eat it. On taking the empties back into the pub, the barmaid was surprised to find us still there and having eaten in our car! Not sure what they thought we would do with the food we bought - we are still bemused now!!! Food was very good but it would have been far nicer to sit inside!!

Had heard great things about this place so took the family there to celebrate my Birthday. Very friendly staff and very attentive. Sunday carvery was only thing available so we all had that. Although the food was perfectly ok, it was quite cold so ruined the enjoyment. Had 4 desserts and asked for just ice cream for 8 year old grandaughter, was quite shocked to see I was charged £6.95 for a couple of scoops of ice cream and also my Mum had profiteroles (5 in total) which were also charged at £6.95. Bit extortionate foe small desserts! Don’t think I will be visiting again.

We visited tonight and had an absolutely fabulous Scottish themed meal. The food was delicious and the service was great. Thank you so much Ian, Sharon, Paul and Jess for making such an effort, loved it all ❤️

We whent for an evening meal and although there were quite a few of us the food came out together . They catered well for my friend with a gluten allergy and the vegitarians of the group. Its a lovely small pub with very friendly and helpful staff there is also a nice bar. The food was fantastic and came in good time. The atmosphere of the resaurant and bar are amazing.

Just want to thank Lisa and Ian for putting on such a fabulous meal. There were 16 of us, so a big table for a relatively small pub and kitchen but every meal was great. Managed to get them out together and we just had a lovely evening in a warm friendly atmosphere.

The Christmas tree lighting was a fantastic way to start our evening out with mulled wine and mince pies. The atmosphere was brilliant and everyone was in the spirit of Xmas. We had the specials, a madras curry which was delightful and the skate wings with all the trimmings just melted in the mouth. Complement to the chef and thanks to Ian and Lisa for a great night.

There were 7 of us - family members to celebrate my 82nd birthday and the carvery was genuinely the best carvery I have ever eaten! The yorkshire puds were the biggest I have ever seen and there were about 7 vegetables to choose from. I can't recommend this place enough, a superb meal, lovely and hot and terrific service. Can't wait to visit again!

Whilst we helped by preordering a couple of days in advance, it seemed that everyone in our party of 14 wanted to eat something different - quite a challenge for a relatively small kitchen.Nonetheless Lisa and the team coped brilliantly, particularly with adapting standard items to GF for 2 of our party, one of whom was 8 years old, eating off the Kids Menu.Whatever the challenges, we all had a great meal and a great time.

Eydon Walkers arrived after a 5 mile hike around Helmdon and were given a wonderful selection of food served hot and on time. Well done Lisa & Ian. We will return.

So wonderful to finally have delicious food on our doorstep! Excellent food for both adults and kids. My daughter had kids fish fingers and you could tell they were made in house. We were celebrating my sons 18th and they were amazing right down to a birthday song. We had a great time And will defiantly go again.

I was visiting a friend in the village. We would normally eat at the house but decided to try Sunday lunch. I'm not in the habit of posting much on TripAdvisor but felt this was so good I should make the effort to put in a positive word.

Fantastic sea food last night. great atmosphere and friendly welcoming staff. Best value food in this area, highly recommend.

We often come here for food 3 to 4 times a month since the new owners took it on. Every time great food and lovely service. We have tried a lot of the menu and it has always delivered. One of the best pub Sunday lunches I have had.. Extras like cauliflower cheese and cabbage with bacon and cream all included.. Really worth a visit, but book ahead as they are often full.

Saw some great reviews and thought we would pop out for Sunday lunch. Nice little pub that has been done up recently with new owners.

A bit of an impromptu booking tonight and so glad we spotted this gem, can’t recommend it enough.

Been trying to get a table here for a while. Heard some great things about the place. It’s literally round the corner and we fancied eating out. We were lucky enough to be fitted in which was great only a 30 minute wait and we were glad we did. The service was brilliant. The food was well cooked. Very generous portions too. Left feeling very full and happy. Lovely place. Easy to find. Nice decor. Would recommend and we will absolutely be returning.

I believe that this should be a 5 star rating. The food and service were excellent, the staff were all welcoming and friendly. However, we were advised that there were no pizzas as they didn't have a pizza oven, and there were no fish or seafood dishes, as well as a few other starters and main courses which weren't available, and some which had been substituted by something else. As a mainly non meat eater, this limited my options. As this was the start of a Bank Holiday weekend, I think they had been let down by suppliers. We were sat on a bench, which was uncomfortable, but I would ensure to ask not to sit there again. We will definitely go back as this is a great pub, and very good value for money, and hopefully next time I will be able to rate it the 5 that I think it truly deserves.

We went for Sunday lunch and had a wonderful meal. The portion sizes are very generous and everying perfectly cooked. Lisa's welcome and friendly service is a joy to experience.

Visited yesterday, busy pub but they fitted us in for a meal. Lovely olde worlde building, very welcoming hosts and staff. Real ales on pump incl Doombar - my fave! We had a superb freshly cooked meal at very reasonable cost. Good luck to Ian & Lisa, they deserve to do well and I'm sure they will.

Three of us had a meal at The Fat Landlord on the 12th April 2019. Very good food (the pressed shin of beef was amazingly delicious!), extremely competitive prices and fast, efficient and pleasant service. The pub has been recently refurbished and is bright and buzzing with people. It might be best to make a booking as the evenings do get pretty busy. We'll certainly be going there again. Since the new management started a few weeks ago we have eaten here three times. The first time we commented that the fish pie lacked sauce and was too dry - the chef said that he would improve it. On our third visit the fish pie couldn't be faulted. Creamy sauce, plenty of fish and the right balance of smokiness. Other dishes were good too.

Now under new management this place is hundread times better we had a meal here last night and it was good . The food was good and very good value for money with the new decor been done it is a nice cozy place to go . Why not try it for yourself you will be very surprised ,we were . Jonesey

Can recommend this great find on several levels:

Visited for a few drinks on their opening night. Really busy, the place looks great inside all refreshed. The only thing is the lighting was so bright! They have these great traditional bulbs but everything was so bright, if they dimmed them it would transform the place and make it much more cosy. When the lighting is sorted I can see this being the perfect pub Helmdon needs. Great work!

We live in the village and had friends visiting for the first time - thanks to Richard I was proud to show them our local -basic menu but food is fantastic and the place is really cosy - definitely worth stopping by 😃

Had the ribs last night and they were excellent. So much meat on them and excellent value for money. I have paid almost twice as much elsewhere and had less meat. This place now serves great value for money for good wholesome food. If you were disappointed with the previous arrangements you will not be now.Strongly recommend.

Second time we have been, food was really good. They welcomed our dogs and we had use of the back room which lead to the garden.

We had booked for a meal for 8 people, having arrived ( 6.45pm ) we were the only people in the restaurant. The waitress bought the ( very limited) menus over and then proceeded to tell us what they didn’t have. In the end my brother asked her to tell us what they did have ! We ordered our meals, which to be fair were well cooked and nicely presented but then the waitress asked if we wanted any mayonnaise and said that there were only 2 portions of tomato sauce left !! What sort of establishment runs out of tomato sauce ? it was straight out of a bottle not home made so no excuse. The waitress was fine but the landlord didn’t even come over to the table to say hello, he was too interested in talking to his regulars in the bar area, such a shame as the food was great, just the landlord let it down. Considering the price he charges he should have made sure he ordered enough ingredients and also a friendly word with the people who keep him in business would have made a big difference.

went there last week. After reading the menu the waitress then told us what they did not have!! Funny as we were there early and only one other couple in. Menu was poor with few choices and was certainly not good especially for the prices being charged, nothing to write home about. When we were having coffee the LANDLORD turned the lights out in the pub and the waitress sent over with the Bill, could not wait to be rid of us, So 5 of us did not enjoy any of it.

Myself and my partner visited for Sunday roast. The pub itself was lovely. We both had a roast myself beef and my partner had lamb, very impressed by the size was just enough to be able fit in a pudding after. I booked sunday lunch here as a finale to a weekend glamping up the road in a shepherds hut. on arrival we were shown to our table, which was lovely, but we requested a table outside as it was so nice and sunny. this was no problem at all, and we chose a nice sunny position in the garden. The service was very good and attentive, and the drinks orders were quickly taken care of. after a few minutes our food order was taken (we had the chicken and the pork belly). the food was perfectly cooked, and came in good time. the pork belly was very tasty, and the proportions were just right. the roast chicken was absolutely huge! again, it was well cooked, and all the accompaniments were spot on. if we are over this way again, we will definitely be back. thanks for a perfect finish to the weekend guys!

After reading decent reports from friends, we booked a table for a birthday meal. The restaurant wasn’t overly busy yet we were seated on a table pushed up against the bar.

We booked this pub for a Sunday lunch based on previous reviews and were a bit underwhelmed.

The pub itself had a friendly atmosphere, but interior needs a little updating if aiming to grab the bistro pub crowd. Staff are young, but very smily. Booked a 3pm Sunday lunch, but told that half the roasts were sold out, so aim for an earlier lunch on a Sunday for a better selection.

After hearing so much hoo haa, about how great this place was, I suggested it for my birthday meal. We were told soup and something else was off the starters, and there were only 4 steaks!!! Starters were good, my friend was waiting 10 mins for his scotch egg too come out, after ours had arrived, and then the main, everyone’s came out, but my sister and I were told ours was just coming. My sisters came out mine was just coming!! 10 mins later my aunt asked, where my new was, it’s just coming!!! But the young waitress came back, No food, I’m really sorry she said, there are no more steaks, I thought it was all a joke, and laughed, this poor young waitress had no idea what too do, she said your meal will be for free, I ordered the pizza, which was ok, and then I wanted to order the sticky toffee pudding, sorry we have none of that either!!!

Very good roast lunch. All four meals very good. Very busy restaurant but orders and food happened in a good timeframe. Staff were very helpful and friendly. I like to think I cook a good roast myself and found the meat and vegetables to be of a good standard. Will definitely expect to back for further meals based on this experience

My wife and I went to the far landlord and the food was fantastic i will say that we were served by a waitress who was very polite with a cracking smile as we sat down to eat . We were served by emmie who was very professional at her job .She went out of her way to really look after us well done to her. This little pub is in Herndon and it's a great little place to eat .anyone thinking about going here let me tell you that you won't be disappointed . The landlord is a really nice bloke as well ask for Richard who will really look after you . Honest

After all the Facebook hype I had been so looking forward to visting this pub/restaurant. I expected wow but got ok. From sitting down at the sticky table (not a good start) the menu was unenticing, although we all enjoyed our starters. I had avocado with a pergectly cooked poached egg. Were told the specials, then told the linguine had finished by 8pm. My husband was disappointed so he went for the fish and chips. My burger was ok but our friends felt their chips tasted of onions. (probably cooked in the same oil) it was reasonably priced and our waitress was friendly but probably won't rush back.

Visited with my family, the food was very good and the waitress was very attentive, my only gripe is the tables are so close together you feel like the people on the next table are part of your party.

The Fat Landlord is an old village pub now trading as a restaurant. The restaurant is characterful with a mismatch of chairs and tables and one of the smallest bars I think I’ve seen. Parking is on the road.

This place was just perfect, we love travelling around trying different pubs and normally have a critisism of some sort but this place just felt perfect. Raw and casual with a good feeling about the place. The food is amazing and great value. We will be coming back for more.

Partner saw this pub on facebook and we dropped in for an impromptu lunch and glad we did. The Fat Landlord Club Sandwich was amazing.

We went for Sunday lunch and braved the mini "beast from the east" to get there - and it was well worth it. I had the half a chicken and himself had the roast beef. The food was delivered promptly and portions were very generous! The yorkshires were huge and lovely. Two points from me - the half a chicken is actually too much and himself ended up eating the leg etc. Also, it would have been nice to have had some stuffing with the chicken to add an extra depth of flavour.

We've eaten at the Fat Landlord at least five times and the food is always great BUT at peak times they are trying to cope with too many people and it gets a bit hectic with customers queuing waiting for their table.

Visited on Valentine's night and had an amazing dinner enjoyed all three courses , but you cannot beat the Sunday lunch highly recommend book in advance as it's always busy.

Had a meal tonight at the fat landlord. The food and service was amazing. I had the best calamari for the starter and a juicy steak burger for my main with crispy chunky chips. Second time I've been and definitely wont be the last. Must go a try the Sunday lunch. Best around

I visited this evening with a friend for a casual meal. There was a great atmosphere in the pub. It was warm and cosy environment which was perfect considering the crisp cold evening. We both had the steak burger and it was one of the best, tastiest burgers I’ve had for a long long time. The real ale selection was great too. The staff were very friendly. I simply cannot fault a single thing.

We visited The Fat Landlord on Valentine’s Day for dinner and we will definitely be back. The staff were welcoming and friendly, orders were taken swiftly and the atmosphere is cosy and relaxed.

Booked last minute for a meal last night with my husband as we’d heard good things. We weren’t disappointed at all. We arrived early and were shown straight to our table. The service was very good with the staff being attentive but not overly so. I would agree with another review where it did feel that they needed the table for another sitting and felt a little rushed. Other than that though the food and ambience is perfect. The menu is not vast but then that’s great. What they do have on there all looked great. We both had the meat pies which were lush. Packed with ingredients and flavour. The jus (or gravy to us northerners) was amazing. Really thick and flavoursome. We will definitely be back there again. Maybe have to try out their Sunday menu.

My wife and I went to The Fat Landlord for dinner on Friday night. Despite very short notice they were able to accommodate us.

Just had an excellent meal with friends at the fat landlord. Friendly staff served great food in pleasant surroundings. Our only criticism was that our 3 course meal was possibly the fastest we have been served and felt that our table was needed for a second seating? It is a difficult balance to achieve attentive service without making the guests feeling rushed.

We went to The Fat Landlord for dinner last night (second time we'd been). Again we had friendly, efficient and fast service and the food was absolutely fantastic. I thought it might not be as good as the first time - but it was!

Fantastic Sunday Roast, it’s right up there with one of the best I’ve ever had, Roast beef was perfect and the slow roast pork was devine with beautiful crispy crackling. A “Must Try” are the blue cheese leeks. Well Done.

Visited my sister and partner and they took us here in the evening. The beer 1st, very nice, with a choice of two traditional ales. Now the food, very, very good indeed. We went on the steak night (Saturday) me having the ribeye as all the sirloin had gone by 20:00 .. Nevertheless, it was lovely with the peppercorn sauce, chips. The menu isn't vast, but that's fine as what they do is very good. Others on our table one had the Sea bass, one had the pie and one had the fish and chips.. Clean plates which says a lot.

Visited this fabulous gastro pub in it's opening week. Flawless service from all members of staff. Great choice of alcoholic beverages and the food is excellent. I'd recommend going out of your way to visit the Fat Landlord. I'll certainly we returning and would recommend this place to anyone!
