We reserved a table for 4 at short notice for a family weekday lunch. The menu is small but with a good selection, offering a 2 or 3 course lunch at a reasonable price. Our choices arrived beautifully presented having been cooked to order and the hosts could not have been more attentive. Strongly recommended for a meal with that personal touch.

Brussels were uncooked, same boiled potatoes, parsnips were boiled and greasy not like the roast potatoes which were OK. Gravy poor, turkey unmemorable...a ile of slices as if off a machine...my first course fish skewers was good, the G&T also...the Xmas pudding came rather sad and deflated (possibly microwaved individual one) in custard and no options. The pot of tea was good but mince pie unmemorable. Forgive me writing this review if you were my partner's family or my partner , who could read this and I certainly would have been unable to complain about the food I was served. All too often customers must get caught in this cul-de-sac unable to 'speak out'. The 'brussel' shot of a guest's plate and a subtle hint was not taken up nor apologised for. The two menus and all four participants could only select from either one or the other. All Xmas or all A la Carte. Impossible to work it all out. So I would report a poor showing and again if any of the other guests read this please forgive me but I couldn't let this pass unnoticed. I will NEVER go to this place again. I was the only person not exactly 'family'.

I feel compelled to write this review..Through total disbelief at what I was served up on my plate. I ordered grilled Cod with sauté potatoes. I was expecting a a FULL fillet of Cod! What I was served up was just pathetic. The fillet of cod was approximately 1/3 of the fillet with 3 or 4 slices of sauté potatoes.. all for the price of £16..! 😡😡 Appalling value for money!! 😡😡😡

Congratulations to Caroline and her team for ensuring everyone’s safety during these very challenging times . The Cartwright Hotel is situated in a brilliant area for visiting some lovely areas ( for walking.). It’s worth paying a little extra to have a courtyard room , they are slightly bigger , and very quiet. Breakfast as always was good , with plenty of choice. We look forward to going again next year , when hopefully things will be back to normal .

We stayed as part of a travelzoo offer on our way further north. Looked lively from the outside, on site parking available too. We were shown to our room, which was a delightful surprise. We had a huge comfortable bed, really good pillows. A separate lounge area with a second TV. The tea, coffee, milk and biscuits were more plentiful than I would expect. Plenty if storage space. Window seats at the two bay windows. Spacious bathroom, with lovely huge soft towels, really good quality. We had a trip to the pleasant bar where we were well looked after but the gentleman in the afternoon and the lady who took over later. We had a late lunch so didn't have finner there but the plates we did see looked appetising. We slept well in the wonderful bed, minor criticism was the creaking floorboards from the room above. Exactly what you'd expect in such an old building though. Breakfast was included, and we were very impressed. Always a pleasure when your choices are cooked to order. Pleasant dining room, plenty of space between tables, well looked after by the young ladies. A very satisfactory stay, impressive value with the travelzoo offer too

I liked the seating as it was well spaced and you didn’t feel that you had to listen to the other diners conversation! The menus was imaginative and a good selection of meats, fish and vegetarian/vegan options. The staff were attentive but not too eager! The wine list was comprehensive and well priced. The food was very well cooked and well presented and tasted very good. I had the cheese board to finish and there was just enough after 2 other courses! Saturday 5 October 19, after visiting Waddesdon Manor, we decided to go to dinner at 'The Cartwright Restaurant' at Aynho in Oxfordshire. My husband and I had previously stayed here and had a wonderful time. The Cartwright Hotel has an entrance lobby that was done out in rich creams and had a light oak wooden Reception area. This area had a stone flagged floor which continued into the Bar, and Lounge area and Restaurant. The Lounge had a wood burning fire and a soft brown leather sofa and chairs to relax in. There were magazines and games for guests to use. The windows overlooked the front of the building with views of the village houses. We were given a wonderful welcome by Caroline, the manageress of this establishment and there were hugs and kisses all around. We were served to a delicious meal in the ’Cartwright Restaurant’; we had a nice cosy table for three in the corner of the restaurant by windows which overlooked the village green. The décor of the restaurant was very comfortable and cosy and the service by Kim, Elizabeth, Pablo and young Ronin was wonderful. We all shared bread and olives for our starter. The presentation was wonderful, the bread crisp and warm, the olives succulent, and the perfect combination of oils for dipping, plus a pot of creamy butter.Susan for her main course had the blade of beef served with roasted vegetables and mashed potato, which she said was delicious. Mark and I for our main course had the Steak Rossini, served with pate and a mushroom and brandy cream sauce and served with sautéed potatoes and buttered spinach, the steak was delicious and just melted in the mouth. We washed all this lovely food down with three large glasses of Pinot Grigio for Susan, a large glass of Merlot wine for me and two pints of bitter for my husband. Afterwards, we had desserts. Susan had the chocolate torte served with pouring cream. My husband had the cheese board, which he said was delicious and very filling. I had the apricot Eton mess served with scrummy flapjacks, the sweet was lovely and light and the perfect finish to my meal. We did not bother with any coffee's afterwards and we were all well fed and contented. If you want a lovely country restaurant with excellent food and wonderful staff then this is the place to visit when you are in the area.

We were staying at this Hotel as part of a short trip away. Didn't feel particularly keen to go visiting anywhere else for a meal so decided to eat in and were so glad we did. Not an extensive range of menus, but this didn't bother us. I saw the Crab and Avocado salad as a starter and I was in heaven! Home-made onion bhajis suited my husband as well. He had smoked salmon pappardelle pasta and I had swordfish steak. The swordfish (which you don't see often anyway) was the best I have ever had.... better even than when I had it in Puerto Banus. The pasta was creamy and luscious.

Excellent dinner yesterday evening. We’re surprised to find the restaurant empty, thought it would be packed as we had difficulty finding car parking space but apparently there was a huge wedding across the road in Aynho Park with accommodation at this hotel fully booked. Never mind, we were warmly welcomed & the restaurant soon filled up. This was the first night of Christmas Dinner parties, neither we or any of the other diners tried that menu. We had the regular menu, the food was attractively served, nice & hot & delicious, thoroughly recommended.

Really nice roast beef (cooked to perfection) with a crispy yorkshire pudding and excellent roast potatoes. The french beans and sugar snap peas were nice and crunchy, but, the other half of the vegetables on offer were covered in cheese. They came accompanied with saute potatoes and wilted spinach. Desserts were hard to resist so the Apricot bread and butter pudding, sorbet and sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce and honeycomb ice cream, were consumed. All were excellent. Stayed for two nights and dined in restaurant on one of them. It leads off the snug bar area and wasn’t very busy so were able to select a table in conservatory area overlooking rear car park (although might be a bit hot in summer months). Went for an anniversary meal. The food was very good, but terribly slow coming! We didn’t get starters for over half an hour, and main courses took a further half hour, even though we were one of only three tables. Then waitress brought dessert menus, but 15 mins later hadn’t returned to see what we wanted. So gave up and went home for a coffee. We had to go to the till to ask for the bill and they had difficulty printing it out due to a new system recently installed. All of which took the shine off what was really a nice meal.

On entering I was greeted by a very professional lady who united me with the rest of the family who were having a leisurely drink in the bar. She took my order for a drink and I sat with the family. We all studied the menu for lunch and made our choices. My niece needed to settle her child (10 months old) and give her something to eat. She was shown into the restaurant and was given a high chair immediately (the lady was very considerate and kind) - nothing too much trouble. We all settled ourselves in the restaurant and our starters were promptly delivered. Mine was the ham hock terrine - which was very tasty and had a leek running through the middle. I would certainly order that again. My main course was the roast beef with all the trimmings which I really enjoyed - everything cooked to perfection. My last course was the cheese - three varieties with relish and biscuits - nice choice of cheeses and plenty of it. All the family enjoyed their lunch and would certainly come again and highly recommend the food and polite, friendly and efficient staff. We all felt so comfortable and welcome.

I then had the rack of ribs and my wife had the salmon burger. The meat just fell off the ribs and it is probably the first time I have managed to eat ribs without having to pick up the bones. My wife's salmon was also well cooked. My only complaint is that with the soup we were both given a piece of sliced white loaf. I would expect somewhere of this standard to either have home made bread or at least provide rolls.

Excellent pub for evening meal and drinks. We hadn’t booked on a Friday evening, however the team found us a table and made it work. The food was fabulous, and we tried four ales which were all in superb condition. Most importantly, the service was excellent from all four of the team who served us during the evening. Highly recommend visiting the pub if you’re in the vicinity.

I visited with my mother and my 2 young kids. Kids loved their breakfast baps which seemed to be made with oven bottom muffins which were tasty. I had scrambled eggs on some very hard crunchy sourdough toast with some extra beans and tomato from the add on breakfast menu. My tomato was a quartered salad tomato still fridge cold whereas I would have expected this to be a sliced and cooked / hot tomato. My mum’s poached eggs on sourdough toast was on undercooked toast barely more than bread so wonder if the toaster was turned up when mine was cooked! Didn’t seem to be any salt on the tables just pepper. Cakes were okay but waitress / server didn’t know what one of them was when I asked which I thought was unusual in the current allergy climate. She seemed new and a bit lacking in confidence. Scenery was beautiful and was quite quiet. Think more could be done with the deli but I would visit again.
