The Olde Red Lion in South Northamptonshire

Stopped by after going shopping with my wife, never been before, it looked Ok from outside so we decided to have a drink and lunch. Glad we did it was excellent.

Excellent Sunday lunch, the place was very busy. Considering that there were 15 of us, service was good and the food was excellent. Couldn’t fault the staff or the quality of the food and the prices are very reasonable. I have now been twice for Sunday lunch, once for a group evening meal and three times for the walkers special in the last two months - they have not missed a beat on the quality for the money.

Excellent Sunday roast dinner yesterday for myself and extended family. Between us, we sampled all four of the different meats on offer and each was cooked beautifully. I can especially recommend the slow-cooked lamb but everyone was pleased with what they had ordered. The meats were accompanied by a wide range of different delicious and plentiful vegetables, plenty of gravy and home-made Yorkshire puddings, including a gluten-free Yorkshire for me which was superb. The meals were fresh and hot. The service from the waitresses was attentive without being pushy. There was a good range of wines/beers. Can recommend highly and will be returning soon.

We went for Sunday lunch lovely service very friendly but a bit disappointed in the dinner we had to pay another 5 pounds for cauliflower cheese came in a little pot ask for some more gravy that cost another 2 pounds didn’t mind but it came in a little pot not enough for all of us for what we got I am sorry but not worth the price you are charging you should give the gravy free not charge 2 pound extra I know thing are going up In price I have work in a restaurant for 17 years so I know what things cost just look at the extra things you have on you menus and see what you can do look at the Cromwell that in the same village you can have extra and do not have to pay for it

We visited as two couples, one of which lives in the village. Warm decor and attractive surroundings. We ordered burgers and the blade of beef. All four mains were thoroughly enjoyed, my only critique would be that the blade of beef just came with one very small Fondant potato, there should be more, this wasn’t enough. The beef fell off the bone though and a beautiful gravy was served with it. Burgers were excellent. We also ordered brownie for dessert which was lovely. Great wine too. The bill was reasonable and service fine. Will definitely be back to try more. Well done Luke and team.

I’ve visited the Red Lion a couple of times since its reopening and each time the service has been friendly, welcoming and timely. The food has been perfect and the prices reasonable. It is a lovely little pub for good food and drink and everyone is made to feel at home. We visited for Sunday lunch today and it was fantastic - plentiful, hot and very tasty. Would recommend to anyone.

Twice we’ve been to the restaurant. Once for Sunday lunch and second spur of the moment evening dinner. Both times the food and service has been wonderful. Food has always been cooked to perfection and the serving staff very pleasant. Hopefully in the summer there’s plenty of entertainment in the beer garden?!

If you are traveling north from London that is the place for a small break. I am from the hospitality business and with a great pleasure I want to share my todays experience in the Olde red lion. Service 5 ⭐️ Food 5 ⭐️ Atmosphere 5 star ⭐️ Manager is doing a great job - very welcoming, attentive, yet not overwhelming. Food: 1x sausage and mash, 2x fish and chips, 1xroast beef sandwich, soup, passion fruit crème brûlée (seriously tasty), brownie, pint of lovely ale, few soft drinks all together came to the price of 66£ 🤩 👍 Whole place was very tidy and very clean including toilet which not always is spot on like here in olde red lion. I can surely recommend this place to everyone 🤗 is it for a short break, pint or lunch. It is worth every penny to go couple of minutes of the M1👍 Good luck and thank you!!!

Found this place by accident today. We were pleasantly surprised by the cosy atmosphere, but most importantly we were thoroughly impressed with the food and service. Wonderful presentation of all dishes. Starters, mains and deserts were all generous and very tasty. It was clear a lot of effort and care for the customer had gone into every detail. Prices were extemely reasonable and to top it all off we were warmly welcomed by a nice gentleman who made sure we enjoyed our time there. If you’re ever in the area, make sure you pay this pub a visit! Fully recommend!

We were meeting up with a friend from the village and having read glowing reviews about the pub we thought we would try it for ourselves and so glad we did. The staff were all friendly and attentive without being overbearing, there was a constant stream of diners coming and going and the place has a great atmosphere. The food itself was absolutely faultless, the roast dinners were piping hot and the meat was tender and delicious. My husband had the Trout and he gave it 10/10. The presentation was top notch. The boys both had coffees and I had the Passion Fruit Creme Brûlée which was just lovely. All in all a great experience and we will definitely return. Thank you.

I don’t usually write reviews but we stopped here for Sunday lunch on the way to Heathrow from Derbyshire to break the journey! What a find! Literally 5 mins off the M1.The staff and service were fabulous and the food was delicious and plentiful! Bonus of having to pass the Hotel Chocolat Factory shop😉

Honestly the best Sunday roast in the area! I’ve tried many of the best rated pubs/restaurants around Northamptonshire for Sunday lunch, this was by far the best one I’ve had. Roast beef (cooked to perfection) with all the trimmings followed by the most indulgent sticky toffee pudding! Didn’t take a photo of the sticky toffee pudding because we inhaled it as soon as it hit the table. Great atmosphere, the pubs had a refurbishment and the decor is lovely. We will be back!

We booked a table of six on the 'Walkers Menu', the service and menu were great, We will definitely be back! I had sweet potato soup to start, it was served piping hot in huge bowls with big chunks of rustic bread. A meal in itself on a cold January evening! For main, I had the burger - it was excellent, quality, juicy & succulent beef served with crispy chips - exactly how a burger & chips should be! Dessert was amazing - passion fruit brulee, beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. The menu was only £20 - superb portions, quality food & beautifully presented. Delicious lunch in this cosy countryside village pub and restaurant. Reasonably priced for freshly cooked food. They also have a deal £15 for 2 courses or £20 for 3 courses at lunchtime / early evening.

Dreadful Sunday lunch for three ! 14/1/2024 I can’t say one thing good about it , except only 5/10 mins from my house !!! sadly food reheated to cold ! Service awful not offered the desert menus or wine with our lunch or coffee ,had to ask for condiments WiFi wouldn’t accept my credit cards ! We couldn’t Waite to get out ..never again complete waste of hard earned money .

So good to have this great venue back open, and in such safe hands as the new owner Luke. Great meal here tonight, enjoyed my fish and chips - beautiful fish and a great tasty batter. My two guests both had the beef short rib which looked incredible (they both devoured it!!). Great food, fantastic attentive service and a fair price. Loved the new decor in restaurant too. Only negatives I would give - please use proper sauces when it comes to Mayo and ketchup, cheap sauces spoil good food!

An old pub with beautiful stone and wood work. A few steps here and there as befits the age of the building and one low beam. I had a lovely lunch with the biggest surprise being a normal looking crusty gluten free roll. They apparently get them baked specially locally - a rare treat. The food was presented beautifully and staff were helpful and knowledgeable. Well worth a visit. Update Dec 2022 - still as good as the GF bread is still the best I've tasted.

We visited for lunch earlier on in the week after a long walk and opted for The Olde Red Lion in Kislingbury. The pub was relatively empty bar a few diners in the main restaurant area so due to covid we sat in the bar area. Drinks and food orders were taken and after a wait of about 15 minutes our lunches turned up. My wife had the steak ciabata which was enjoyed even though there were no caramelised onions with it. My Beef and Leek pie however was a different story altogether. For the cost of £15.95 I received a pie with a hard pastry base that contained barely any leeks and was about the same size as a typical pukka pie. This was accompanied by a small blob of mash. After it was brought to the table I waited for some vegetables to turn up but another table received the same pie of the day and theirs had no vegetables either. I must admit I have eaten in hundreds of Northamptonshire pubs and restaurants over the years and this must be the ultimate in not receiving value for money especially £16 worth. I totally respect the fact that times are hard for all but please do not charge maximum amount and deliver a laughable minimum. We did not bother to complain and later stopped at another pub and received good value for our hard earned cash. I know you read these reviews and your pub as well as staff are excellent but your food and the portion sizes are laughable. I have included a few pictures. Visited 20th April 2022.

We visited with high expectations of a lovely meal which turned out to be a lack lustre one. Very strange beef and Stilton pie served with poor mash and no veg. Chips served with a burger which looked as if they’d been refried from lunchtime. Staff pleasant, discount provided but won’t be visiting again for food.

We were not impressed. A flat atmosphere, took a while to get drinks. Then the food arrived! Overcooked duck that was inedible, beef and Stilton pie, inedible. Wild mushrooms does not mean four button mushrooms. When we complained the waiter didn’t ask what was wrong with the food. The table next to us were equally disappointed. Wasted evening. Best to be avoided!

This was our first visit here as we moved to the area a little while ago and our first impression when we walked in was a warm friendly atmosphere. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. All of our three course festive menu choices were amazing from the starter to dessert we all enjoyed. The quality of the food and presentation was excellent. We were looking to try a different fairly local place to eat and we certainly chose right. We were celebrating my husband’s birthday with our family. 6 adults. From the moment we walked in until we left we noticed the lovely atmosphere and very pleasant staff. The starters were all very very nice, all the mains were brilliant, the three men all had steak and said they were second to none. My salmon was wonderful and my daughter certainly enjoyed the vegetarian dish. Thank you to all the staff for a lovely relaxing evening. We shall certainly be booking again.

Had a meal out at the Olde Red Lion last night. It was steak night which we didn't know when we booked. Two steak meals with three sides, sauces and two desserts or a bottle of wine cost £45 between us. We both had rump steaks which were cooked beautifully. The restaurant was cosy with only a handful of tables occupied at around 7pm. The service was excellent. First time visit for us but planning to go back for afternoon tea. Recommended.

A great pub. Staff were excellent really made you feel valued. The food was great value and the taste was perfect. Everything is sourced from the pubs own farm even the chair coverings. Beer was kept very well in deed. In fact I cannot fault it. You will not be disappointed.

All front of house staff were great. Unfortunately we had two Beef Sunday Roast’s (£13.95 each) - beef was so undercooked (one slice virtually raw) they both needed to go back and be cooked longer. In addition, the first Yorkshire’s were burnt but when the beef came back after the longer cook time, those original Yorkshire’s had been replaced. The meal came with roast potatoes that we could not even cut in to - so overcooked we had to leave them. Vegetables and gravy were fine. In addition, there was no Diet Coke available and the first lemonade (from a large bottle) was completely flat. This was replaced with a fresh made lemonade and it was very good. We did not ask for a price reduction but were given one as the meal was clearly below the acceptable standard. Manager was very apologetic.
