It has been a whole pandemic and then some since we were last in Edinburgh, but a recent business trip had me in the heart of the city, so, for dinner we made a beeline for Saigon Saigon which was our usual haunt before catching the train home. Gutted to find out that it has shut down, but, happy that it has been taken over and was now called The Emperor. We entered late afternoon to find the place empty, there was more staff than customers. However, it did mean we were shown to a table quickly. We perused the menus and were shocked at just how prices have risen. That said, everywhere has had price increases so it was expected, just shocking is all. We placed our order via a very friendly member of staff who we had some small talk with (apparently the place is absolutely dead outside of summer when it is absolutely chock with tourists and visitors). I was annoyed that tea was £2 a head, in many places it is free, as long as you are eating. Still, tea leaves and water isn't free, so despite being annoying, it was acceptable. The food arrived quickly, we ordered some flat noodles with seafood, and, well, I wish we didn't. It was bland, full of noodles, full of seafood (plentiful prawns, chunks of squid), but it was tasteless and chewy. The siu mai was awful. Probably some of the worst I've ever had. These things looked huge, but they were so over cooked that they were solid, and, as such, had a horrible texture and taste. Same goes for the fung jow. It had an odd taste to it, almost "chemical" (yes I know everything is a chemical, but you get me..?) All in all, the food in this place is woeful, staff are awesome and friendly, but maaaaan the scran is rank. Save your money and go elsewhere, your taste buds and wallets will thank you.

On a visit to Edinburgh, Xmas present (hotel stay) Had been recommended several different styles of restaurants, but forgot it was Chinese New year so a lot of restaurants shut . But The Emperor was open . Read menu fancied the £25 Banquet so went in , everything we like on it , only 2 people in the restaurant but one day before payday in January so no surprise! Service good , food delivered to table very quickly , 4 starters , crispy duck , 3 main courses and a very large bowl of meat, prawn egg fried rice . All food tasty , cooked well 😋 Lovely Served with 2 Cokes £57 great value Only comment would be the food needs to be on candle burners to keep food hot while eating especially the rice as it goes cold fast and start serving Cider Would recommend Coming from a Semi retired Head Chef of 42 years so I know what's what .

Ordered the set lunch menu. Waited 20 minutes for the soup and a further 45 minutes for a second course which never showed up. Looked like bedlam in the restaurant. With so many other restaurants in Edinburgh, avoid.

Exceptional service. Waiter had a fabulous sense of humour. Delicious, authentic Chinese cuisine. The whole family loved it.

Ambience, alright. Typical Chinese. Compared to restaurants in Hongkong, the service is considered very good. Don’t expect all the “Sir Sir, how is it? Everything alright…” and you will be fine. Food, authentic. Good. Entrance has wheelchair lift thing fitted. So it is accessible. Staff, ok. Fast. Did we enjoy it? Yes. Is it authentic? Yes. Do we recommend it? Definitely Yes. 好吃 😋。

It was fine. No frills, reminded me of a Chinese restaurant from the 80s! The setting is nothing special but the food is actually very good. We had salt and pepper king prawns, Hong Kong chicken, egg fried rice and Singapore noodles. All very tasty. Couple of glasses of wine. Service fine, not particularly friendly but did the job.

AVOID AVOID AVOID I could give 0 stars I would! I am absolutely appalled at the experience myself and my partner had here on Saturday night! We attended here to try and have dinner we were brought downstairs to what I can only describe as a unused function room , as we arrived a family had up and gone as the service was atrocious! We eventually received menus after a 20 minute wait so we ordered our food and drinks only to wait another 35 minutes for 1 main course to arrive which wasn't for us it was for a different table,I called the waiter over who was already extremely flustered and under pressure i asked him when we might recieve our starters he then told us that they had been given to another table by mistake but that he was sorting it out for us .We then waited a further 10 minutes with nothing, so my partner went to try and speak with a manager to find out what was happening, he was extremely extremely rude and unpleasant to deal with he managed to sort out one of our starters to arrive but not the other! At this Point we decided enough was enough we wanted to leave ! When we went upstairs I took it upon myself to ask to speak with the owner who had very little English and when I explained the whole situation the manager interrupted my partner from speaking and told her to shut up ,infront of the customers who looked shocked and appalled at what was happening. I cannot express how shocking this experience was and I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anybody travelling to Edinburgh not unless you want to be abused verbally by the management ! Disgusting behaviour AVOID AVOID AVOID

Absolute bedlam , while waiting to be seated watched a waiter spill a plate of beef and blackbeans over a customers coat , after been shown to a seat at 4pm the owner/ boss came to take our order 4:10 , we ordered banquet B at £28pp and two diet cokes at £3:50 each , he just mumbled 2 of everything and walked off , I never got a chance to order a side of chips , but we shrugged our shoulders and get on with it, time now 4:30 and 2 American couple came in and sat close to us ,they order a bottle of wine and 4 glasses of water , when waiter brought hem he duely dropped all the 4 glasses and jug over the ladies coat and hand bag , time now 5 o’clock we still hadn’t received a plate or knife and fork so decide to ask what was happening with our food and they were full of apologies, Time now 5.15 still no plates or knife and fork, then the straw that broke my back , the owner/ boss came and asked us if we could tell them again what we ordered , we then stood up and walked out , never again and my recommendation would be stay clear when it’s full

First day of our three day visit to Edinburgh. Chose to dine at The Emperor Chinese restaurant this evening. Nice welcome atmosphere on walking in. Not too busy, but it is Monday. We ordered a set menu meal which consisted of a number of courses. All the food was delicious and plentiful and very authentic. A nice restaurant, good location just off Princess Street, good delicious food, friendly staff and all for a reasonable cost.

Beautiful warm welcoming restaurant on a very wet miserable evening. We couldn’t see a particular item on menu. When we mentioned it to the manager he informed us they had it & it wasn’t a problem. We ordered it & the portions was fit for two. We will certainly be back.

Order chow mein and fried rice. The chow mein tasted great and cooked with a variety of vegetables. In comparison, the fried rice tastes bland.

Speechless, the food was close your eyes mmmmm amazing. I went twice in one week and I really couldn't fault it. Well except the beef was a little too salty in both occasions but edible. The pork was tender, the ribs just perfect and the service was good, that's why I went twice, with my niece and then my sister. I will be recommending it to everyone. I apologise for the poor photography

I have been ordering from GY for a few months and it has been very good. Unfortunately, my order tonight was not great. The first piece of salt and pepper chicken I bit into was pretty undercooked. I thought I'd ignore it, but a lot of the pieces I cut into were on the pink side😬 These things can happen, but it did ruin the meal for us.
