My brother and his family were visiting from abroad and I decided to take them for a quick bite to eat after walking all day. We were turned away because of my infant nephew whom was by the way, 3 years old and sleeping in his chair. It is incredible that a city like London still have businesses in its centre town, have a no children policy.

There is something primal feeling about Elk - the spare lines, concrete, old planks and mishmash of décor as if it was scavenged from somewhere and pulled together into this dining space. Likewise with the food. Sourced from small farms and producers, the menu has that sense of dishes that were made out what was available - emphasizing fresh ingredients and creativity. From the craft cocktails and small plates to entrees - we found it delicious, thoughtful and interesting. The menu changes all the time - but everything we had was great. Good service, loved the atmosphere, easy to get to by underground. Please eat here!

We found this place by chance last year after the breakfast club was full and we have just visited it again on a day trip to London. 2 of us had the full English and 1 had poached eggs on toast. The food was lovely and the place has a nice atmosphere with good service. We did book in advance and glad we did as it was busy. Good quality food at a good price.

Went to Elk in the Woods last week when I was visiting. The food was great. the tables were a bit close together, but it is a small shop and I don't think they had too much room to work with. We were looking forward to a family meal and chose Elk in the Woods as it had a good selection of meat and fish. We had a selection of dishes but the meat dishes were poor. The pork belly was really just fat and it was put on top of the chips so that all the fat ran into them. The staff were pleasant and helpful but it was let down by the quality of the food.

This place has an air of casual dilapidation that is somewhat at odds with the prices. Reading the menu suggests that the food is out of the ordinary and that usually carries a premium. When it arrived, however, the food could not be called 'extraordinary'. The calamari came in a delicate tempura coating and worked well with the chorizo mayonnaise, while the fennel flavoured meat balls and chutney were well received. Less happily, the wrong artichoke dish appeared but the fault was soon remedied and the correct alternative was declared 'tasty'. Our second courses flitted around the menu; a beef burger came from the sandwich section, and one had a second starter. The soft shell crab with avocado and brioche was no more than a glorified burger but was tasty, while the Iberico ribs in cooked in a sweet glaze were much appreciated. The ubiquitous chips, however, were limp affairs that won no prizes. The accompanying French Pinot noir was pleasant and was reasonably priced; needless to say it wasn't a Burgundy! Altogether this was mixed experience with some good dishes let down by occasional failings. With more attention to detail this could be considerably better than average.

We spent £80 and left feeling very underwhelmed. The 'Scandinavian' seafood platter for £26 was a rip-off, a langostine, a few prawns and some poor quality mussels and cockles in a pot of watery sauce. The duck special was average and the deserts were ok but for the price we paid it really wasn't worth it. The service was really slow even though the restaurant wasn't that busy. The decor inside is a bit quirky and it seems to appeal to the local hipsters.

One came to this restaurant with one's partner, Minty, after a morning of rare antique shopping along Camden Passage. We were particularly ravenous and parched, having just disembarked from our private jet from Saint Tropez. The cadre were particularly accommodating, looking after out 18th century painting by William Hogarth whilst we appreciated the cuisine. I ordered the Vanilla Pancakes, which arrived promptly, and well presented. The eclectic fusion of blueberry, vanilla and maple syrup was exquisite! I went here for New Years lunch with my old school friend, we meet up a couple of times a year and thought this would be a nice place to visit. The service was excellent, atmosphere was again above standard. The food on the other hand - would of been great - if it was hot. we had to wait quite a while for our order ans when it came it was cold, real shame as it was tasty. They gave me new hot fries but my burger had tartare sauce in so had to be eaten cold, i left half of it.That said, i would go back but just check food before being consumed.

I came here as a group of 11 for an evening meal on a Friday. It's not a huge place so I recommend booking. It's in a gorgeous little alleyway in Islington with some quirky shops. We were put on a long table in the back corner, which was perfect as we weren't squashed in and didn't have people pushing past us. I loved the decor in there. Lots of natural wood and simple style. The menu selection seemed good for meat eaters but a little limiting for vegetarians. Many of the group went for the £35 Christmas menu but I went for a la carte. The portion sizes of the main meal on the Christmas menu was ginormous! None of them managed to eat it all. I had a lovely veg platter with goats cheese, beetroot, salad etc which I did enjoy but found quite rich. I had the chocolate bomb for dessert which again was very rich but delicious! We were all so stuffed by the end of the meal that we had no room for cocktails, which was a shame. The staff were attentive, friendly and didn't rush us at all. Overall, it was a really lovely evening and somewhere I'd like to try again. It's worth noting that the toilets are downstairs. I don't recall seeing a disabled toilet, so would be worth checking first if you would need this facility.

I really fancied an english breakfast along Camden Passage, we were served quickly an the menu seemed really varied and interesting but when the food arrived we realised how average it was. I ordered the veggie breakfast, it didn't seem exciting but then again it was words on a menu and I thought the actual food might taste different. It was bland, boring and lacked any kind of flavour. The spinach was literally a mush, the bread they serve tastes awful. This is one of those average food serving places that tries to be cool. Looks fab on inside, but food is crap. Not worth the money.

My friend and I had popped in here for a light bite weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I decided to come again a couple of weeks later to bring my mum and her friends. Out of interest I checked trip advisor to check on recent reviews and was nearly put off by some very mixed reviews. We took a chance and booked a table for 8 anyway, and I'm so glad we did. We had a really enjoyable evening, the service was very friendly and helpful all night and the food was delicious. I had the special (I think it was duck, if I remember correctly) and my mum had the vegetarian platter - I was almost envious as it was very tasty, but mine was definitely better. I really wanted to like this place! It is on Camden Passage in Angel, which is an adorable pedestrian thoroughfare filled with boutiques. Easy to find, just near Breakfast Club and off the Islington Green. We visited for dinner and had looked at the menu in advance, thought it sounded so great and our tummies were rumbling when we sat down. We had a just-ok pinot noir, one of the more expensive wines at £30 --I had the beef short rib with bbq sauce, sweet potato mash and 'bacon slaw.' I wondered what this would be, picturing a delicious tangy cole slaw with crumbles of delicious bacon. No...it was, I suppose, literal slaw-boiled cabbage with some limp bacon on top. (I know, English bacon is not typically crumbly, but this was not good). The short rib was fine, a bit dry, very fatty, unremarkable 'sauce.' The mash was awful! I am not a good cook, and I can do better at home. We also had starters--the cauliflower, the deer sausages (which were interesting, mostly they just seemed like greasy skinny sausages to me but the mustard dip was nice), and the calamari with chorizo mayo which was again just blah. He had the pork belly--the apple sauce was delicious but the overall verdict was, again, blah. A shot of digestif came with the pork, also wasn't great and felt pretentious (without adding anythin g to the experience). Our friend had the veggie plate with goats cheese and beetroot and hummus, which appeared to be huge when it arrived but was also described as disappointing. The staff seemed nice and the hostess chased us outside when one of us left something in the restaurant!

I've lived in the area for a few years, so this place has been a long term favourite brunch place of mine. A few months I went with my boyfriend and was disappointed - the food was lower quality in produce and preparation. As I've liked The Elk for so long I decided to go back a couple of weeks later with friends to give it another go. I won't go back again. The spinach on my meal was gritty and clearly hadn't been washed, so it was inedible. The food overall was badly prepared, not enjoyable and felt thrown together. They also completely forgot about my friend's meal which arrived 20 minutes after everyone else's, with barely an apology. There's too much competition in the area for food and service below standard.

We visited on 13 November for breakfast. Had been wanting to go for a while but we were very disappointed. The staff were rude and the service was extremely slow. We walked in, asked for a table for two without a reservation and were pretty much laughed at. Offered their low coffee table, which we took. A couple walked in in the same situation whilst we were eating, and were offered a table that had a reserved plaque on it. They obviously had not checked to see what time the reservations were for. Pretty irritating to have eaten at this awkward table surrounded by empty normal ones. Beyond this though, my food was appalling. Eggs were overcooked, muffins stale. I barely touched it, but no one asked me if my food was ok or why i hadn't eaten it. The bloody Marys were really bland as well. Never going back.

Great friendly staff except had to keep asking them to remove empties from the table; they seemed happier chatting amongst themselves rather than paying attention to the customers needs. The food was very nice except the elk, very dry and chewy. Staff weren't very good at making drinks (gin and tonic), we needed to guide them and they kept having to use Google to tell us about particular gins; obviously badly trained....lovely place though and the food was really good (we kept eating different starters through the couple of hours we spent there). Used to think - 10 years ago - that this place was the height of class and quality food. Sadly having been back for the first time in about 4 years it has gone seriously downhill. Not only did the ambience make it but the food was excellent - whilst the former is still true, the latter is sadly not. It's like when your parents say to you they're not angry they're just disappointed. That's usually the worst. My wife and I visited this week on a Tuesday had a number of the small plates which, whilst large in size, were just poor. The mains are so expensive that we went for the small plates - and like the mains whilst they sound incredible on the menu they just don't live up to expectation. We had undercooked chips (unforgivable), calami that was soggy, measly portion of sausages, polenta chips with Parmesan and truffle oil that was not too bad, and fig with nectarine and blue cheese on toast, sadly the cheese made the toast incredibly soggy.Such a shame but they have seriously tested on their laurels.

Was looking for a quick but nice bite with a friend and ended up in this cool, laid back place where I'm deffo coming back! Tried the smoked deer sausage with fig (I'd loved for it to have more than one though) and the elk kebab - tasty, balanced, beautifully cooked! Plus an asparagus and beans salad side, which, when it comes to sides, I found particularly uncommon (this goes for the majority of their sides) and very pleasant indeed. My friend was not overly impressed with the day special of sirloin steak with chips and veggies, although the broccoli had a very tempting green colour and the chips looked handcut so I'll have to try that for myself. Desertnis maybe the least original in the menu but it is beautiful in presentation and flavour both. And last but not least, the staff: chilled, nice, smiling... a pleasure to be around! As I said: I'll definitely be back!

The restaurant was half full and the atmosphere a bit lacking - soggy summer night and probably much cosier in winter. The starters were tasty but the mains a bit disappointing. The steak would have been much better with a sauce rather than an unexciting mushroom and the chips quite limp. My two friends left half the pork belly and we had to smile when the waitress warned them not to try the small glass of a "never before drink" on the side which came with it. HelloJust want to say loved this restaurant or do you say hang out nowadays, took my long suffering partner there, I say long suffering as it took me an hour to decide where to lunch, am extremely fussy, suffice to say will be coming back. The staff were lovely, would divorce for those waffles.

My friend and I ended up in Angel on Marathon day looking for somewhere to eat when we came across this lovely eatery.I loved the wooden tables and simple décor but most impressively was the menu which is quite unique. Loved the deer sausages and the Elk kebabs. Plenty of staff and service was good. So is the Malbec :) Lovely experience. Thank you.

I found this establishment cosy and inviting. The meal I ordered was a duck egg ( I choose fried) with Coriander Toast topped with avocado mash and Grilled asparagus....Very nice!

Always wanted to go here as I live in the area. Sat outside and the table cloth was filthy and then the water bottle was old and cloudy. Food was nice - Brioche bacon and egg rolls £5.50 - I felt the place was a bit dirty. Oh well I suppose you are pay for the area!!

A simple snack was disappointingly bland, small and expensive. We were sat in the pathway of the door despite many empty tables and we asked for a particular butter but didn't get that and no acknowledgement! Truly poor value for money. Won't be going back.

I've been coming here for the last 3 years, our office is located nearby, so great for lunch with clients and I visit at the weekends.Very first impressions were poor, staff can be a bit hit and miss, brilliant at times, mardy and rude at others. The last 3 occasions have been brilliant, the venison burger and chocolate sphere are stand out!Brunch is good and plenty of variety in the menu, try several sides as a sharing lunch. You are spoilt for choice on Camden Passage... Kipferl opposite is a favourite, really amazing sushi along the way and the much hyped Breakfast Club (great, but I wouldn't queue). Elk In The Woods is definitely one you should try, if you get an outside table for a sunny lunch, even better!

Walked past looking for breakfast / brunch on a Saturday morning, it was busy, and the food looked good so we decided to go in - and it’s all downhill from there...Staff very rude, just didn't want to know - even if they were busy a smile and a nod wouldn't go a miss. Busyness is no excuse for rudeness.Once we got a table, waited 15mins for table to be cleared, another 10 mins for menu, another 10 mins before being served, food arrived before the drinks - of which my coffee was cold and filled under half the cup, and the food was standard at best - all in all it was a bit of a shambles. Felt like a bit of a tourist trap. Might just be me but thought £4.50 for a small glass of squeezed orange juice was a bit of a joke. Much better places to eat further up Upper Street.

A group of us went here for lunch. The service was terrible! They wouldn't seat us away from the door despite having made a reservation half a week before and we could see available tables further in, they didn't give us menus for 40 minutes, when I noticed a hair in my food, the waitress didn't even apologise. In terms of food - the calamari was good, starter of potatoes with cheese was burnt and didn't have much flavour. I ordered the pulled pork in brioche bun, never have I eaten such dry tasteless pulled pork before, my earl grey tea was so watery I had to ask them to give me more leaves. In the end we only gave a 5% tip and that was being generous. The only thing this restaurant has going for it is the location.

Wanted lunch as busy shopping in Islington, this restaurant is so hectic reservations are required. We were fortunate & a table was promptly found for my freind & myself.I ordered the vegetarian breakfast which consisted off 2 eggs, tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms, 2 Vegetarian sausages & a large slice of very delicious bread, my freind had a sandwich with houmas, grilled haloumi cheese, soaked raisins & lettuce. The service was prompt, the staff very nice & efficient, I must say that this restaurant was a most pleasant find, the total bill was just £22:00, exceptional value. 10 out of 10 will most certainly eat here again.

Not sure what has happened to this place. We like to come on the weekend for a quick brunch because we live nearby and we have always loved the food. It's quite busy on the weekends so a lot of time we get turned away which is fine and completely understandable. What annoyed me with this last visit is the service. Only one single person in the entire cafe was able to tell us whether or not tables were available. If that weren't ridiculous enough, we had to wait 20 minutes for him to even speak to us to tell us there was a 20 minute wait. Not sure if there's been a change in management but I'm feeling no real rush to go back. Very disappointing. Kipferl directly opposite is a good bet for delicious food and prompt service.

Lovely service, eclectic vibe, good food. Scandinavian twist on breakfast, nice hangover cure. They do a Bloody Mary with bacon in it, I didn't have one though, so don't know why I'm mentioning it really. Chorizo crossed with black pudding (I think) was very tasty.

I've been meaning to go here for a while but I was quite disappointed. We shared the calamari and both had the hakkebof (meatballs) and a couple of side salads, which were really tiny. The food was ok but nothing very special. There was a good beer selection and the place is pretty cosy and informal.

It was my first visit to Angel although I travel to London frequently. This cosy restaurant is located in the lovely Camden passage not far from Angel tube station. It is advisable to make reservations as it gets quite crowded after working hours. Food is delicious - I had a venison burger with chips and it's a great value for money. I find this place great for having a relaxed chat with a friend because it is not so noisy as other places might be when crowded. I really recommend it for a relaxed night out.

Went here twice in 3 days. The food is lovely, however, the first day the service was extremely slow. Took longer to get a cup of tea than to get our food. Second visit, lovely food again, but they refused to provide more hot water to dilute my tea (I like it very weak!) and I had to pay for a pot of tea, but without the tea!! Outrageous policy and incredibly miserly.

Went here for lunch whilst my wool was being wound at Loop. Staff friendly and attentive. Theme seems to be Scandi - both in decor and food. I had grilled halloumi in tortano with houmous, pickled raisins and carrot. Food good, as was the coffee, which was served after my food as requested, without prompting. I moved to one of the easy chairs to drink my coffee and read and felt very relaxed. Like the ambience of this place.

The food here is excellent and the service is very friendly. The café had a really warm welcoming feel to it and the décor is really fun. If you go at the weekend though either make a reservation or expect to queue!

Perfectly nice staff. Nice place. But I think there 's a reason there are queues outside the Breakfast a Club next door and this place has table availability. The coffee at Elk in the Woods isn't very nice and the breakfast is big but the mushrooms were salty, the sausages full of fat and the tomatoes were burnt. Not for me.

Been here for a friend's birthday and had a nice brunch. The poached eggs with salmon were very tasty, although the muffin was a bit fluffy. We also tried eggs with asparagus, avocado on coriander bread, which was equally good. Both anchovy and herb butter with bread is also worth a try. One small remark: although it may look good, serving eggs on wooden dishes is not really salutary. Anyway, nice find!

Shame. Been here a few times in the past and the food was always good. I have to say it's really gone down hill and I won't be returning. I ordered a dish I had several times before but it didn't even resemble anything I had before it was a pork chop badly cooked and very dry. In fact I gave it to my boyfriend who will eat anything and he wasn't impressed either. He had a steak which was supposed to be ribeye was mediocre at best. Cocktails not what they used to be. Has this place changed hands perhaps? Real shame as it used to be my absolute favourite. As I said, won't be going back sadly.

Had a business lunch here and really enjoyed it. We only had the 'Chicken & Bacon' sandwich but it was deliciously tasty and reasonable value at GB£8.00 each. My colleague had a Latte Coffee which he said was very good, cost was GB£2.55Located down the interesting Camden Passage this is a pleasant Cafe with outside seating for those fine days... Inside the decor is nice and 'quirky' with loads of mirrors, wood lined walls, Elk skulls and a solid concrete server counter... A great trendy place for coffee with friends or that relaxed informal business lunch. Recommended and would certainly stop here again.

I ordered a pineapple crumble and a pot of tea as I'd already had lunch and my pudding arrived covered in what looked, smelled and tasted like parmesan cheese. It destroyed the whole dessert and so it was inedible. I raised this with the waitress who told us it couldn't possibly be parmesan as they use it in the kitchen but either way something had gone seriously wrong in the preparation of the food. She didn't offer to rectify the situation at all and left the item on the bill too. A bit disappointing as I live locally and have always wanted to try this place out. Won't be returning.

the menu is Danish it seems but anyway there are interesting options at fair prices, and they say the food is from an ethical source... the pork chop with its trimmings including a shot of fruit liqueur was certainly a winner!

Camden Passage in Islington has a few small café/restaurants and this is one of the best. We walked past the Breakfast Club with a long queue of tourists holding on to their guide books that had obviously recommended it, and thought, '' How strange, only a few yards away there is an equally good café, which has no queue, but these people can't actually use their own minds to pick a place to eat without help from a book?'' Anyway, there is a set menu of fancy breakfasts in the ''ELK'' but you can just order what you want and they'll price it accordingly. If you want a bacon butty, they'll do it. Maybe that's what puts people off, they think they must order the fancy stuff from the displayed menu. Great service, reasonable price, comfy in a cold Dec day, good food plain or fancy.

The food was absolutely fantastic, far beyond my expectations! Each dish was delicious, bursting with flavor, and beautifully presented. David, who took care of us, was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. The food service was impressively fast, with everything arriving at the perfect temperature and right on time. It was clear that the staff worked well together, providing attentive and efficient service throughout our meal. Overall, the experience was wonderful, with outstanding service from everyone involved, making it a truly memorable dining experience.

This morning I bought a loaf of white sourdough bread. Came back home for lunch to discover that the loaf is at least 3 days old.(Sourdough has a shelf life of 5 to 7 days). Came back to the shop after one hour to bring them back the old loaf and they insisted (rudely) that was freshly baked this morning. After 5 minute of discussion trying to explain that the bread is clearly old (the crust is softer than the inside!) the lady that served my said (but, at least, is the taste good?), ?!?!? I didn't came back to ask my money back (which considering the price of the loaf 6£ would have been good!) but after waiting the line in the cold to buy a 6£ loaf, go home and find out that is not fresh, go back to complain in the cold, the least you can expect is a bit of understanding! RUDE STAFF, PRODUCT NOT FRESH, you can find better fresh bread anywhere else, avoid!

The hot chocolate is creamy and made with proper chocolate. They have all different flavours, my favourite is the orange. I also love the tahini balls and the oat cookie! Planning to buy some Christmas presents from here.
