We just had the most wonderful wedding at the Durham ox Andy is a Awsome manager and his attention to detail was incredible. Big shout out to the whole team

Lovely place, lovely young woman who always serves us is amazing. However… the new manager who goes by the name Aaron (presuming) is surprisingly rude. Lemonade tasted like soda water and didn’t want to sort it out. Unfortunately he tried to tell me that it’s how it is supposed to taste. However, our lovely regular server personally sorted us with 2 fresh lemonades and brought them over. What a lovely sweet hearted woman she is.

We had a great time here with some lip smacking flavours and fab service by Georgia ! She was so pleasant, professional and polite.

Cosy country pub with an array of dishes to choose from. A little pricey but the atmosphere and the kind attentive waiting staff made up for this. Ideal for a group gathering for a celebration, or if you are looking to treat yourself for a nice comforting meal.

This was our first visit to The Durham Ox for years and it really didn’t disappoint in any way. Food was excellent as was the service. Georgia looked after us for the most part and was knowledgeable and friendly. Portion sizes are generous. In addition it is a great location with huge outdoor space for food and drink. We will be back.

Ordered larger shandy only to be told no lemonade. Tried for larger and lime, no lime! There is a shop next door where staff could have purchased with. Tried to order belly pork, not available. Went for bream fillet, that was also off. Settled for pie of the day. It was a small portion for a very high price. Would not recommend. Sorry

Booked the Durham Ox for a special celebratory lunch. We loved the restaurant layout, plenty of space between tables and the semi-circular booths made it feel quite private. The outside seating area and grounds are lovely as well. The food was fabulous, the chicken tacos and korean chicken bites were so tasty and not what you normally see on a pub menu. 2 of us had steaks and they were excellent, cooked exactly as we'd requested, and the pork belly was outstanding. Some of us did manage puddings, and the chocolate tart and Biscoff cheesecake were a scrummy way to end the meal. The staff were brilliant, warm and friendly and able to respond to any queries that we had about the menu. We had told them at the time of booking that we wanted a long leisurely lunch, and they never hassled us to order or to bring the next course, but regularly made sure that we had drinks and checked that everything was OK. Our celebratory lunch was perfect in every way, thank you to everyone on duty that day.

Beautiful pub with a good range of beers in a lovely location. Friendly service and great facilities. Would have been 5* but have been trying to contact them regarding booking of their teepees for our wedding reception, but still no reply 😕

This is a big and well run gastro pub. Oodles of car parking, clean and authentic and original 17th century buildings. One well kept beer which was very enjoyable. We had the burger and fish and chips which were both excellently cooked, generous in size and speedily delivered. Staff were friendly, genuine and really good. All in all it was a real pleasure to visit and we will be back again.

We were in the area and found The Durham Ox by chance, lucky us. Had a leisurely dinner al fresco in the large garden. Plenty of choice, food delicious, staff attentive, friendly and professional. Wish we could have stayed for the live entertainment! Will definitely return.

Sunday lunch with our family to celebrate Ruby Wedding Anniversary and Birthday. Bottomless Sunday Lunch was excellent, very attentive staff, nice setting and the grounds were great for our grandchildren and grown up children to have fun. Lovely chilled day - thank you.

I had the schnitzel last night and I had the chicken tacos this morning for brunch. 👌👌👌 Even though the football was on and it was really, really busy, service was still good . 5 ⭐️ must try. Our local pub that always delivers. Friendly service and top class food. New menu has great options - try the schnitzel! Andy is a brilliant manager, always present and welcoming. Great breakfast and brunch options. Outside space is perfect for the dog and the bar area has dog friendly dining 🙂 thanks all for everything you do!

I was a wedding guest yesterday. I have to say I would highly recommend the Durham Ox to anyone.. Food was amazing, staff was on point nothing was too much trouble. Great atmosphere. Loved the outside. Good seating outside. Great place. Thank you The Durham Ox.

We really needed food after a hard day working up the Hatton flight of locks and the Durham Ox was exactly what we needed. Excellent food and service

A group of 18 of us went there for lunch on a Wednesday. Due to the size of our group all of the food was pre ordered. Apart from our group there were not many other apparent customers. Even though the place was not busy we had to wait quite a while for our meals. However, it was worth the wait as the food was excellent.

One of the best outdoor spaces for a cheeky summertime drink ,good staff, good outlook, lovely pub.

Shocking service from being ignored at the bar, waiting 45 minutes for a sandwich and cold fries, told the food was on the way but it was a lie waited a further 20 minutes. The first visit a year ago was awful thought it might have changed, it’s got worse, we won’t be returning! Told there was various items off the menu and at the end over heard some other unhappy diners they had a chef off, on a bank holiday…!

Great service if only the clientele had manners. Barman was exceptional under duress. A shame, used to be a great pub.

Lunch was great, food excellent. With attentive and friendly service. The Nacho's are unbelievable and there big definitely would say there a Sharing plate lol.. It was a nice sunny day when i went so sat in the lovely garden with great views. 5***** Went back again the weekend 13/11/22, again food was great, service as expected top notch, Came here again 30/09/23 very nice again had the steak and mustard on a flat bread sandwich which was really good and more filling that you’d think. Came back again 20/04/24 as expected another great meal with an hour or 2 of sunshine in there lovely garden

Such welcomeing staff,I joged up there that part of the village,I find the place comfortable ,with ample parking ,nice . There was a good price ,also it's at a high standard , the price for alcohol none alcohol was good cocktails to.they also have a out side part.in the summer time.to relaxe, I find this place to be a friendly family place.also, they don't think that you bring your dog.they seem very animal friendly, which is a tick.

Lovely local Pub for Sunday meal. We had a really good time. The food was absolutely tasty, our kids literally finished off all of their pastas. I had the Spicy Chicken Burger, it was amazingly moist, lovely! Not to forget the staff friendly and helpful, thank you guys 🌹🌹. Beautiful place for family gathering or even a couple's Day or Night date. Good range of cocktails for cocktails lovers 🍹🍸 sip sip horrayy! Suggestion: Pre-booked tables for future reference to all new customers to avoid disappointment, especially on Sunday service as they get very busy with details allergens or food intolerance if you have any specific dietary requirements. Pssst!! They do bookings for weddings or any other special occasions too! Amazing!

We went there for Sunday lunch and to celebrate my Daughter's birthday. We waited an hour for the food and when it finally arrived the vegetables etc were lukewarm. While they offered to warm the plates up, we simply wanted hot food - surely not too much to ask for. More vegetables were eventually provided - this time they were hot. We then ordered more drinks but they did not arrive. (I have to say that although there appeared to be sufficient staff, the service overall was poor). So, rather than stay for a desert, we decided the best route was to ask for (a discounted) bill and leave. Having had previous poor experiences at the Durham Oz, we have decided never to eat there again. All in all, a most disappointed experience. At least we learnt our lesson. We should not have gone there in the first place!

Everything very good, atmosphere, and serving staff. The large party I was with had a mixture of lunch, but the ones near me had sausage & mash ! Well two 16cm sausages placed on a tablespoon of mashed potato ? I just fancied "Cheesy chips' it arrived in a large mug sized bowel with mustard yellow sauce ? The sauce had slight cheese taste but looked & tasted the same that comes out of a side of the road cafe containing mustard for your hot dog. Cheesy Chips have grated Cheese in & around. Their saving grace was they offered me a bowel of soup that they had spare. Lovely place lovely staff but Not convinced about kitchen staff.

One of our group explained that she had a medical condition and asked if the vegetables could be well cooked and our lovely waitress went to ask at the kitchen but was sent back to tell her that they could not accommodate her request. Another trip back to the kitchen to see if a different vegetable from the menu could be substituted - sorry the kitchen cannot do that for you was the reply. It`s a top price pub restaurant and they cannot even cook the vegetables the way you want them! That`s unbelievable. At this point the poor young waitress was between a rock and hard place but she handled the difficult situation superbly and professionally. Not so the manager who came to the table asking intrusive questions, allegedly so that he could understand the situation, but then insisted they couldn't possibly prepare anything slightly differently for a customer when he had 200 covers to serve. He said that they could only accommodate such a request if given prior notice at the time of booking which is not what the menu and their web site says. As an observer I considered his whole attitude to be rude and patronising and he would do well to observe his polite professional young waiting staff and perhaps learn something about how to deliver good customer service.

Everything about The Durham Ox is wonderful. The staff are welcoming and efficient. The food, however, is the star. Sunday lunch is brilliant and the weekday pris fixe lunch menu is both delicious and a bargain. 10 out of 10, definitely recommend.

Part of a large table we tried the hake and pan roast chicken supreme which we really enjoyed our waitress Georgia was very attentive. we moved to the bar which was very busy although we did get greeted and served very quickly by the skilled bar staff. Best pub for drinks! We decided to stay for another couple of drinks. Amazing experience thank you team!

First and last time eating here. Food was cold, menu misleading. Order gravy bowl never arrived but gravy swamped the food even when not asked for. Complained and told they wouldn't bill the service charge! I think the service charge should be down to me anyway. The food was pre processed and Sainsbury's sell better. The vegetarian roast was tasteless and simply mushrooms in pastry, never found any of the other supposed ingredients. My wife's chicken roast was disappointing cold and inedible. The best meal was the burger and chips but half the burger was left at the end. Lemonade had no flavour. £95 wasted. Never again.

This place is so welcoming and the food is amazing! My husband said the Sunday roast was “couldn’t do better if I cooked at home”.

Had to update from my last post. My meal last week was the wrong order. This week my wife ordered the high tea, which they could not provide, despite booking a week ago for the family. Totally disappointed.

Excellent Sunday lunch today, Thank You! The meal was delicious and great staff. Warm and cosy when it was cold outside. Will be taking family and friends again.

34 friends and family went to The Durham Ox for my daughter's baby shower on Sunday 14th January. We had a fabulous time! The staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. Most of us has roast dinners which were served to us piping hot and tasted beautiful. I have been here several times and on each occasion have had a great time. Would always highly recommend. There were 35 of us for a Baby Shower. Every meal was excellent! Friendly helpful service. My gluten free meal was amazing. This is about the 4th function I have been to at this venue, each time has been outstanding

A great countryside pub good beer and great food

Christmas Day lunch was very disappointing and heavily overpriced. The soup was cold and very spicy. Turkey dinner came with all the trimmings as you would expect the beef was tough with very little in the way of vegetables and the veggie roast cauliflower just a slice of cauliflower with purée and what I think was rock hard stuffing no other vegetables at all. How much is a whole cauliflower £1. We have often had lovely Sunday lunches there, we thought Christmas Day lunch would be just as good and worth every penny but feel completely ripped off! I have emailed the Durham ox but as yet I’m still waiting for some acknowledgment

Christmas dinner 2023, was massively underwhelming, below average, forgot to bring out our starters (forgiveable as these things happen) but when they bought them out they'd been sat around (evidenced by the cling film stuck under the plate still) and the bread was so hard my mom couldn't eat it, main was distinctly average to, nothing good to say about it, as for the dessert the cream seemed off it tasted strange as if it had been sat out being warm too long. I used to really enjoy coming here for Sunday dinner, I'd wanted to treat my mom and myself to a nice Xmas dinner. Thought I was in for a safe bet with The Durham Ox. Even listening to two other tables complaining it was obvious it wasn't just us. I'm not a complainer I don't ask for money off or pester staff. I'll just take my business elsewhere. I felt sorry for the staff serving really they were trying there best, next year perhaps less tables or less sittings and better quality even at slightly increased cost, people just want a nice meal to remember. I'll not be back in a hurry.

We planned a lunch stop here whilst exploring local canal walks. Great choice! Extensive menu with lots of lighter lunch choices. I had the steak sandwich and soup 👌Lovely friendly staff who even bought the dogs a bowl of water. Highly recommend.

Justed popped in for a drink lovely place

Stayed in the area with family over Christmas and visited this pub on a few occasions. Christmas day was manic. The restaurant was full and food was taking a little too long to come out, however, there seems to be a new manager that was doing his best to deal with what was clearly too many bookings and not enough staff. The young waitresses were very busy, smiley and helpful. In the following days, we have popped in for drinks. Served quickly and it was nice to be in a pub so full with so many different characters. ..and plenty of dogs. Overall a lovely country pub, nice atmosphere and we will be back.

Dreadful food, dreadful service...

My partner was waiting patiently at the bar to be served, when a lady pushed in front of him and asked for a drink. My partner said he was queuing, and the barman then said it was his family and would serve them first and my partner would have to wait!!! I feel this was incredibly rude. We were regulars, but won’t be any more!

Worst Christmas dinner ever honestly do not bother ruined my Christmas vibe bad service one of us was given our meal and it was left to go cold was probably brought out cold as wasn’t even slightly warm the toughest cut of beef which I had to send back twice as it was cold what eventually came out was like sand gravy was literal water and I was brought back the same microwaved food twice I had a piece of beef potatoes and mash that I had to request no veg no Yorkshire no pigs in blankets no veg that’s not a meal and I was told they didn’t have things and then they would serve it to someone eating next to us I’m going home hungry and frustrated I would warn anyone against eating here as the whole thing was stressful felt like a Karen but genuinely it was so poor and I paid a fair bit so did not expect the experience I had.

Food wasn’t fresh, staff were stood about doing nothing and very very unhelpful. Ended up not eating my meal. Toilets were filthy. Won’t be returning

We really cannot praise this place enough. We booked for 25 of us for Sunday lunch and they did all they could to ensure we were all accommodated. We had some people drop out and they were absolutely fine and when we added two more people on the day of the booking it was no problem. The food was lovely and the service was exemplary, handled the large numbers very well and brought the kids food out before everyone else's which is only a small touch but it's so helpful for parents to get their kids sorted before their own food arrives. Just a shame that we aren't local to go more regularly.

Over the years we have spent many a happy hour in The Durham Ox but since a big refurb - now several years ago - we have kept away. Tonight we ventured back with friends. It was early and a Tuesday too so not surprisingly...

It was very quiet when we arrived and didn’t get much busier during our stay. The food was okay, too expensive though especially the steak, terribly overpriced.

Met up at the Durham Ox with a party of 9 for a reunion. Food, ambience, service were all genuinely excellent. We were looked after very indeed and appreciated the efficiency of the service. Did not need to eat much the following day. Highly recommended and lovely setting. Thank you.

The food was excellent I had the lamb and hubby had the pie of the day. The service was good also and the floating area manger was very pleasant. So would defiantly go back again.

Afternoon tea was aweful. Dry bread and scones which had cream on and had gone sour. The staff were very good i felt sorry for him. We did get a refund but it spoiled our treat.

Very mediocre food considering the price, the fish was good, the haloumi stack was average, the steak was good but with half a mushroom, a tomato and a handful of chips it was way too expensive. Drink prices were very expensive too, maybe a one-off...

I’m affraid not good my daughter booked the Durham Ox as there were reasonable vegan choices for her and her husband. When we arrived there was a dog running around wild off it’s lead with a little girl chasing it !! We had outmr own...

I’m a regular here, the staff are always good, the kitchen staff have changed recently, and the previous staff are very good and the new staff are just as good. 👍👍👍

Very disappointed with the service and the food. Have eaten here several times with the family when visiting. Will not be eating here again. Roast was very poor. Waitress was helpful, but felt the manager was not.

Unfortunately gone down hill in the last 12 months - poor service where orders were forgotten more than once and food coming out lukewarm. Disappointed as used to be a really good Sunday roast. We won’t be returning.

The Durham Ox is a beautiful, friendly and atmospheric pub with great food, lovely friendly staff and a nice choice of beers and wines. My husband and I highly recommend it and we are usually hard to please

Would have reviewed higher but the service was a little lackadaisical. Everyone was super nice but on the Sunday we went most of the wait staff appeared to be high-school kids with no real interest in working. The food was great, definitely a huge plus, great food. Could have really used a better wait staff manager though, coordination amongst the tables was pretty poor and lessened the whole experience hence two stars.

Very disappointing went there for lunch. Only one member of staff serving the food was very much mediocre. The fish fingers in the sandwich incredibly cheap and unpleasant. Nobody asked how the meal was or showed any interest it’s has gone downhill.

Arrived at the restaurant to find us all alone! This should have given us a clue! Ordered food and wine, the wine was ok but the food- I ordered a pie how hard can it be to serve a pre made pie it arrived over...

We had spotted this pub when in the area previously, and came back to try it for lunch. We were so glad we did, as the service and food were excellent!

Good pub grub, not a wide choice for vegetarians, but us meat eaters were happy
