The Dunkirk Inn in Kirklees

Went for a cosy, intimate meal. The Dunkirk just delivers. The place is imacculate. Light, well decorated, contemporary. Last time I reviewed this place I left feedback about staff. They were great, professional and attentive but.... a little... aloof. By God! The feedback at the time was well received and as tonight evidenced, was acted upon. Every single member of staff was pleasant approachable, professional, attentive, and friendly. Happy staff means happy customers! Great team of people. Food - fresh tasty, well cooked, well presented and perfectly portioned. We had Venison Carpacio and Goats Cheese for our starters. Both went with a 10oz Rump done medium rare with half a lobster on the side. I had some new potatoes and they were buttery, slightly earthy, perfectly cooked and the whole lot was tasty as. Steak melted. Lobster juicy and soft. Dessert was Pannacotta for me and Hazelnut cocktail for Madam. The poshest milkshake I've ever seen. Oh, and the warm scone with the pannacotta was to die for! We were well looked after and left with that rosy glow of an unrushed evening's dining that just filled us. Keep doing what you do Dunkirk. It's fab!

Excellent experience all round one of the best meals we’ve had for ages. Superb service and the food was outstanding. Hats off to all the team we will be back and highly recommend to others.

Excellent in every way - Our Sunday lunch in the upstairs dining room next to a window, White linen tablecloth, serviettes. Cheerful staff and food beautifully cooked and served. A very memorable meal for the three of us. Will hope to visit with other members of my family. Thank you. Pat M.

Our table of 5’s dinner experience this evening was sadly a let down. Initially we were seated upstairs, but due to another customer/table with a persistent cough sat next to us, we asked if we could move tables. We were then met with an abrupt and quite frankly rude bar manager (I believe), who advised we were unable to sit anywhere else upstairs further away as the table layout would not accommodate us, even though the room at that point was 75% empty. We then moved happily downstairs to the bar area instead, but unfortunately from then on this same member of staff was consistently short with us, and we felt like an inconvenience. For instance, I had to get up and go and ask her to come and take our order as we had been waiting so long. This is not the service and attitude expected of such a place, of which I have heard good things about from friends. It seemed that since we initially asked to move tables, we then would be met with rudeness from this lady for the rest of the night as we seemed to have upset her by doing this. I will note that another couple next to us had also asked to move tables later on due to the same issue as us, so we were not being unreasonable. Every other staff member however who came to our table was courteous, polite and attentive, and the food was good.

This was our first visit and it definitely won't be our last. Fabulous food and excellent service from the lovely staff. I have no hesitation in recommending this lovely place, and we're looking forward to a return visit.

Very busy. Booking essential well in advance. Food amazing. Staff amazing

Firstly the food was alright, there wasnt a lot of it (2 roast potatoes and 2 portions of Veg to share between 2 adults) but ill add more later. Not the best experience we've had as a family. Staff were unwilling to move one table so the booking could all sit together as "it would mean taking everything off the table and putting it back on". We offered to do it ourselves but were still told no. Because we had asked this it seemed our cards were marked. We asked for drinks and they either didn't come or were forgotten about whilst staff ironed tablecloths!? Other tables around us had check-ins once food was served and all guests were asked if they would like extra drinks whereas we had no check-ins meaning any extras we wanted we needed to either fetch someone or call them from a nearby table if they visited there. The food servers placed food anywhere on the table leaving us to hand out food between us which was a little odd. We all had the food from the Sunday menu, the meat was cooked nicely but I wouldn't say it stood out from similarly priced restaurants. The Yorkshire puddings were good. Veg was undercooked and the roast potatoes were OK but only 2 per adult seemed very stingy. The portion of Veg served was probably about right for 2-3 people but we were a party of 4 on our table (7 on the other table that we couldn't be added to) so again small on the portion size. Again the "second class citizen feel" came back when it was time for desserts, other tables were asked if they'd like to see the dessert menu. We simply had a menu placed in front of us and asked "where should we put the children's menu? " when they came separately. A different waitress took the dessert order and she seemed much friendlier so perhaps we just had the 2 Christmas temps as their knowledge of what they had and didn't have also seemed a little lacking. Food quality 3.5/5 Food amount 2/5 Service 1.5/5 Atmosphere 2.5/5 Decor 4/5 Table dressing 3/5 Value for money 2/5 Wouldn't recommend experiencing this one unfortunately. Just as an FYI the children's menu will only be served to under 9s. One of our party didn't want a roast and asked if they could order 2 lots of the steak from the children's menu (which would've worked out roughly the same as a roast from a cost standpoint) but was told "erm not really it's only for under 9s" this isn't printed anywhere on the website and would not have cost the restaurant any extra to do and seemed a reasonable request from a teenage guest.

Service , food etc all good , thought £24 for the beef dinner was on the expensive side though to be honest , 2 starters , one wine and zero beer and two roasts nearly £80

We dine here quite frequently and until recently everything has been first class, however the past two visits have been a disappointment. The venue and staff are still brilliant but the food and in particular the amount served has dropped off. Our last visit two of our group had the Christmas turkey dinner, priced at £24 for two slices of turkey, a very modest amount of mashed potato, two roast potatoes and five sprouts. If you want "all the trimmings" then there is an extra charge for vegetables! One of our party wanted fish and chips but asked for the smaller portion at £3 less than the large fish, seriously, the fish served was the size of a goujon/fish finger. For whatever reason, and we are not on our own, we feel profit margins are driving the apparent reduction in the amount of food on the plate.

The service was geat and the food was super tasty. We had a great time at dinner and can’t wait to go back. Definitely recommending it to everyone. Dunkirk’s really raised the bar for the area.

Went to the Dunkirk with a large group for a Christmas celebration. Had a fabulous evening. Large selection of quality beers at the bar. The roast turkey was wonderful with lots of fresh vegatables, Christmas pudding was a real treat. Staff were excellent and very attentive, especially given the size of the group. Would definately recommend.

Smart, clean, recently refurbished, prices have gone up since budget changes , good selection of ales and other drinks also , a small room upstairs and the as seen balcony also. Made welcome ,thanks recommend a visit

Had a lovely lunch here. Four if us all had a different main courses and all of us were fully satisfied with our choices. Husband had the fish and chips, brother in law had the duck leg, sister in law had the dressed crab and I had the Christmas lunch. Four clean plates, what more can I say. We were in the upstairs restaurant which was lovely and the staff were very pleasant. Will definitely return.

A wonderful visit last night which included Lobster Thermidor served with hand cut chips, and salad followed by a warm fig and almond tart, finished with a liqueur coffee for my bestie and a Baileys Blush for me.. heavenly! Food was top class and service was exceptional and I was reminded of how good food should taste and look. A dining wonder… and a really good excuse to visit my bestie again… not that I needed one.. Thankyou Dunkirk you made my day!! …

Quite honestly one of the best meals we have ever had, from start to finish the food was of superior quality, portion sizes were good, service staff are outstanding and really 'on it' in every way, and enough of them. There are a wide variety of wines to choose from by the glass which meant we could create our own mini flight through our meal which I really enjoyed. Highly recommend.

Not a good place if you have Coeliac Disease. In spite of the clearly marked menus and after several requests to staff for a gluten-free meal, I nevertheless was served glutenous bread which was hurriedly removed with an apology by a member of staff - after I had eaten half of it. Still suffering the consequences five days on. They had the grace not to charge me. Just as well as I spent the evening throwing up!

The Sunday lunch here was a step above anything else we've had recently. Yes, it was more expensive than others, but it was so, so good. We will definitely return. One point to note is that the pudding of the day was treacle sponge. It had a definite lemon taste to it and that should have been reflected in the description as one of our party doesn't like lemon and therefore passed the dessert onto someone else.

Went in at teatime for something to eat with my wife and our 3 little dogs. Service was fantastic, food was great and the pub/seating area was also great. If we lived local we would definitely visit again. Cheers!

Absolutely gorgeous beef sunday roast. Could not fault a thing. The beef was melt in the mouth. All the sides were delicious and cooked to perfection. They were very accommodating with our requests for our young daughter too.

Everything was excellent great service.

A lovely restaurant with welcoming staff who were very attentive throughout our meal. It was slightly expensive but worth it for a special occasion or a treat.

Expensive for a pub and parking a problem but the food is great and the young staff to be commended. My wife and I enjoyed our meals and the drinks were good too.

Superb meal and service, we were a table of 5. Unfortunately one of our party suffered a medical emergency during the meal. The staff were exemplary, obviously had first aid training and knew how to use it. Our friend is fine now, but on behalf of us all we would like to thank the Dunkirk and its staff very much.

Another absolutely lovely lunch at this super pub today. The food is always excellent, the menu changes regularly, so there's always something new to try, alongside the "favourites". Staff are all so helpful and friendly, the atmosphere is so welcoming. I also really like the fact that, despite it being a pub/restaurant, folk popping in for a drink are also welcome. This isn't always the case in many food orientated places, which means locals lose their pub! Highly recommend!

Attended a 50th wedding anniversary party here and was very impressed. We will return. Food is delicious, from an enticing menu. Service and range of drinks from the bar very good.

A foodie paradise from a chef who has built a fantastic reputation locally especially previously at The Farmers Boy in Shepley. Front of house was pleasant and efficient and all staff were knowledgeable and attentive. We booked last minute and would recommend pre booking at any time. We had Friday lunch today 13-09-2024. Caesar salad with a side of topped fries and lambs livers, 1 IPA and an Italian lager for £50.00. An absolute bargain and fantastic food. The pub is dog friendly, wheelchair accessible and has ample parking 100m away. We intend to make this a regular appointment! Would recommend without hesitation.

Great birthday meal as usual. High quality food, great atmosphere and service from all top class. It's great to be served by people of all ages who appear to enjoy what they are doing. I'm gluten free and always a good choice here. However today the pudding and custard option was not GF. The waitress went the extra mile and I was offered tomorrow's Sunday special pud. This was delicious and ended my evening on a high. Cannot recommend highly enough 👌

An absolutely delightful pub... We didn't know it would be so upmarket, and turned up on route somewhere in our comfies and the staff looked after us all the same. I've already booked to come back for dinner! Thank you for the yummy lunch

Unfortunately we didn't eat until 9.40pm when our table was booked for 8.30pm. The food was lovely when it came but nobody seemed to take charge when asked about our table. This was a Friday evening.

Fantastic food. Great atmosphere. Not cheap, but good quality.

Tonight was our first time here. The staff were so friendly, polite and worked so hard. I have an allergy to peppers and the lady went to check with the chef if there were any peppers (none listed) but she went to double check. The food was out of this world! We will be coming back again very soon.

We ordered the same meal as we had a few weeks ago which was really lovely but last night was very poor. There was no flavour and totally different. It was very bland and dry. The flatbread was like leather with the lamb burger. Will definitely with think twice about returning

Our first visit here after another family member recommended it. This place is in a beautiful setting, its immaculate inside, we sat upstairs at s table with a view across the fields. There is a lift to the upper floor, which is excellent for anyone with a disability. The car park is up the road but its fine with plenty of spaces. You can drop of at the road side. The food was excellent and very tasty. We had haddock & chips, swapped mushy for garden peas, dressed crab & swapped potatoes for fries & 2 of our party shared chateaubriand for 2. All perfectly cooked - there was a quite a wait for the food - but it does say can be 30 mins if ordering the steak. Deserts - we had a lovely chocolate cake & a peach eton mess.

All 3 burgers were burnt and not very nice. Staff were nice

Nice pub on a crossroads not far from Denby Dale/Penistone. Serving real ales, dog friendly and lovely food. There's a car park just up the lane and a few tables and chairs outside which is great when it's fine and dry. I would definitely recommend a visit.

Birthday treat for myself with 2 others. Their pork chop meals were excellent but I found the Prime Steakburger unedible. Was very dry and tasteless.

Very rarely have we had a poor experience following such good reviews as with this particular establishment, where customers stated that it is a very good place on many levels. Today's impromptu visit on arrival looked promising, as we'd not booked we were fine with a table near the bar, however the attitude of the staff and limited Sunday menu choices really left us feeling let down. The main menus were said to unavailable and only option was a limited 'Sunday' fixed price one. We asked why to be told that this option was the chef's choice We noted the table next to us had been given the main menus and when we enquired were told 'they were lucky'. What really was annoying was that as people were arriving they were shown main menus and whilst staff could clearly see our disappointment, they seemed to care not a jot.

Ate here tonight,. Food was lovely and well presented. Staff were smart efficient and friendly! Will definitely be back

Disappointed with the meal today waited over an hour between courses. We asked where our meals were and the waitress went and brought them straight to us consequently the were not hot having been waiting to be picked up for some time??

Lovely Sunday lunch and had all 3 x courses. Really tasty but could have done with another slice of meat and mint sauce. Other than that, fantastic.

We were in Denby Dale looking for somewhere to eat, arriving at teatime from Liverpool. What a surprise. With no booking, we were warmly welcomed. The staff were exceptional, the food was fantastic. To see the amount of food coming out of the kitchen, warm, excellent, and served so promptly and professionally, I commend all the chefs and all the staff they were brilliant. I was very impressed with the whole place and well worth a visit. The last time I was here was over 30 years ago when it was the Junction. Thank you .. smashed all expectations

Had a family meal for an anniversary, lovely staff and great food. The Sunday roast beef is highly recommended pink, it melted in the mouth. Will return as often as I can.

Great evening eating superb food and really friendly staff. Serving staff were fun and bar staff efficient and relaxed. Eating downstairs means you get the benefit of the atmosphere from the bar area as well.

Lovely Lovely food! Starters- Bretton fish soup (delightful) mussels for my partner which were perfctly cooked and really tasty - I pinched a couple! Mains - Pan fried chicken in the most delicious morrel sauce for me and monkfish for my partner. The flavours were lovely we can still taste them now! Great that we can bring our dog and feel so relaxed. The staff are lovely and welcoming. This is our favourite place to eat thank you Dunkirk!

Shown to table asked to sit at a different one the told expect to be looked at with daggers when people come to sit at table I was originally given not very professional. Waitress delivered food to adjacent table food slipped off one plate onto floor she just said sorry and left the plate. She should have taken the plate back and a new portion of food should have been given in my opinion. This is the only place I’ve had lobster to eat minus the claw which I thought was quite odd. I also found a bit of plastic attached to the cucumber in my G&T on pointing out told I thought it was going to be something sinister just got sorry. Service somewhat erratic,

We have been into the Dunkirk for lunch before but only from the bar menu so this was the first time we have eaten in the restaurant and I have to say the food was excellent. My wife had the monkfish and I had the dressed Whitby dressed crab and both were excellent. Would definitely recommend.

The food is excellent, the service is very good, and there is no disable parking. Also, carpark 100 metres away but in a very picturesque setting

Went on a Tuesday in May, and the place was buzzing! So busy and atmosphere was amazing! Really really great food, someone special made the moules marinere and cheese souffle starters! Then steak and lobster for main.... Again, very very good. Great quality, well cooked food. Fabulous and smiley service. Not the cheapest, but definitely got what we paid for. Very very nice tasty, would highly recommend!

Nothing special.Expected alot more with the price of food..I had a chicken and hock pie,just water/broth in the middle with chunks of chicken and pieces of ham..Very disappointed ☹️. Other 3 people weren't too impressed either.

**revisit required with Mrs** A business lunch stop today at this lovely pub 🍻 and restaurant. It's a beautiful pub, very clean and cosy. I didn't try any ale due to driving, but the cappuccino coffee ☕ was spot on. We had a good chat in the bar and when the table was ready we were escorted through. The staff were great 😃 and very friendly. We ordered mains only and they came out within 15-20 minutes. I had the Hake Steak and it was very tasty 😋 probably one of the best I've had. Loads of flavour and the plate was left clean 🤩 Good accessibility ♿ for all A big car park just up the road, 100m say. And some parking 🅿️ available on the side street also. The toilets 🚻 were clean and tidy. Fantastic visit and I can't wait to go back and try a 3 course meal 😋🤩 Thanks for hosting us 🧡👍🤩

Been told by friends about The Dunkirk so called in on the spur of the moment today (Saturday) for a light lunch. Very busy which was great to see and not surprised after the lunch we had. Fabulous sandwiches, lovely wine and great service from all the staff we met. We hadn't booked but appreciated being fitted in - for anyone else coming on a Sat/Sun we say 'book' to avoid disappointment. As its only down the road, we will be back - thank you!

The best Fish and Chips I can recall, and as a Whitby lad that’s sayin summit.

In every regard The Dunkirk did not disappoint. The food was truly sensational and certainly lived up to its amazing reputation. Recommended for sure.

We had only heard good things about the Dunkirk, and as this was our first visit, we were very much looking forward to it. Our table for four was booked for 7.30pm and we had all arrived by 7.15pm. We were told that the restaurant knew we had arrived. No menus were brought to us whilst we had our drinks in the bar and at just after 8pm we had to remind the staff we were still waiting for our table. We were finally taken through to our table and our orders taken at 8.15pm. It was 8.45pm before our first courses were brought to us. We requested further drinks when we first got to our table. These also took an age to arrive. The food when it finally arrived was excellent but none of us either expected or wanted to be starting eating at 9pm. The service continued to be slow throughout the meal. We only had starters, main courses and coffees. Two of us had cappacino’s which were not particularly warm, but by then we had lost the will to complain. The food could not be faulted, but the service was dire. We’ll probably return once more to see if this was a one-off, but at Dunkirk prices everything needs to be excellent, and it most definitely wasn’t.

WOW . . . Simply WOW. Just been to this amazing pub for a belated anniversary meal. When we arrived we were told we may not be able to eat as they were full for the night. They went to ask the chef if they could seat us on a high table near the bar. He said he could. At that point we were happy but had no idea how good it would be. We both had bread with various butters whilst we waited for our mains. We also both ordered fillet steak (medium), Truffle fries, Salad and Peppercorn sauce. What we received was simply the mixed meal I’ve ever eaten. Steak that cut with a normal knife (yes, I tried it), perfectly cut and amazing fries and sauce. Was more expensive than a usual pub but this is clearly more upmarket than usual pubs. Can not wait to go back. AMAZING

I can't find a restaurant local to me that even compares to this place. Every detail to every meal is fantastic, the atmosphere, environment, staff and food are all 10/10. I'm so grateful it's local to me and look forward to every meal knowing it will he perfect! Thank you Dunkirk ❤️

We were treated to a luncheon surprise by our friends to celebrate both our own birthdays as a treat. And it was a great treat at this superb stylish restaurant in Denby Dale which we had not been to before. Our loss, but we shall definitely return. The food was excellent, superbly presented and delicious, for myself I had for my main the Lobster with garlic butter and all our food was very reasonable prices for the quality. The service second to none and the smartly dressed staff were very knowledgeable about the dishes on the menu - I can recommend this Restaurant but book early as it is understandably very busy

The Dunkirk was recommended to us by a friend. I booked for my Wife's birthday and it was absolutely brilliant. Food was cooked to perfection, staff where fantastic. Will almost certainly be going again

Stunning food excellent service , room was stunning, great afternoon atmosphere would definitely return to try different items on the menu .. especially the pie which I saw after eating a beautiful hot beef sandwich!

In my opinion, it's the best venue for pub food in the Barnsley area by a mile.
