First off Peter, our server, did a great job with agreeing or suggesting various items and drinks. Water keep full and finished courses removed in a timely manner. Pricey but worth it for special occasions. £35 per person before drinks and fine bottle of champagne. I had a new item on the starter menue; Samon Rillettes is fabulous! Everyone fully enjoyed their meal. Staff was very accommodating and changed our reservation last minute.

Came here late on a Sunday evening, was made to feel very welcome and got settled into a nice comfy booth. Informed the kitchen was closing soon so we got our food order in quick. Food (veggie sausages, mash and onion gravy) was very tasty and just what we needed after a long day. Good vegetarian options across the menu. Good beer and wine choices. Both of the staff that served us were really lovely and chatty. Thanks very much.

We were walk ins and the host was good enough to grant us space but with added attitude and once we decided not to purchase food off the expensive menu and just have a drink. He rushed us off the table and out the door. Whole experience was awful and unnecessary from his part. The pub interior was the only nice thing about this place. Zero for hospitality.

The service was great too, our waiter Zac was very friendly & helpful in making recommendations from the menu, which my husband chose & wasn't disappointed. The Haggis & whisky sausage & mash was extremely tasty as was the roasted Striploin Sunday roast that I had. The decor inside is quirky, quite oldy worldly with a good atmosphere. Lovely looking gastro pub. We were sat about 1 metre from the singer, which was unexpected. Luckily he was fabulous. Opted for the set Sunday 2 course for £32. My haggis quesadilla was dry and hard to cut. Didn’t finish it. My partner had pate which he enjoyed. The Sunday roast was disappointing. Cut of meat was chewy, potatoes looked great but weren’t cooked through. The portion was poor for the price. 2 small slices of beef rump. I complained and staff were great and brought a better cooked cut out which was actually pink. Cocktails were pricey but lovely. Would return for the singer alone

Went on Father’s Day after being previously for Sunday roast and thought we’d try it for this special occasion. Unfortunately we were not as impressed as the last time we visited. My dad’s mashed potato with his haggis dish was cold as if it had just been sitting out and then put on the plate when someone ordered it. My partners meat with the roast was tough and not as soft or as tender as the first time we went. We then had sticky toffee pudding which in my opinion should be served warm,’or at least the sauce should be and it was not. All round a bit of a disappointing meal. The live music was good 👍🏼

My husband and I met with our lovely family who were visiting from Canada. Service at The Duke's Umbrella was good and the quality of the food was also good - I wouldn't say exceptional. I was disappointed with the lack of vegetables with the main courses. Four of us had a starter and a main course each. Two of us had the fish and chips - £20 for a fairly small portion. The lobster bisque tartare sauce didn't taste any different to normal tartare sauce. Two of us had the whole plaice - £28 for a small fish. It had been prepared very well, and it arrived with some small shrimp in butter and a side of pink potatoes, simply boiled. No vegetables present on any dish. I ordered a side of glazed carrots. When you visit upmarket restaurants, it isn't uncommon for the menu to not state every item on the plate, just key items. I didn't say anything at the time because I couldn't fault the cookery on any of the dishes at all. My disappointment was with the value for money (which I'm not sure any of the staff could do anything about, and I didn't want to raise this with my family present). I definitely would expect a £20 fish and chips to have peas on the side.. and I would expect a £28 fish course to have some vegetables.

This is a tricky review to write because we have been loyal patrons of dukes umbrella since their opening. There are a lot of things to like, the cocktails, the atmosphere, they're dog friendly. However, I think the quality and portioning of food has gone downhill in the last year. They used to have one of the best caesar salads in the city (crispy chicken skin instead of croutons). Now it is a basic, generic, caesar salad for £16. It includes breaded chicken, but if you want chilled chicken it's another £7 - making a plain, simple caesar chicken salad £23. It was a nice salad, mediocre really, but £23 is absolutely outrageous. This is mainly disappointing because of how outstanding this used to be and how I'm paying more for lower quality. My husband had the iberico pork, which looked lovely and he enjoyed but again portioning was a bit small for the cost. Overall I still enjoy this restaurant but I'm feeling pretty disappointed in our recent visit. £23 for a chicken caesar salad is a rip off in any venue - especially for a run of the mill salad. The staff are friendly, and I'd argue the service is as expected.

But the food was overpriced and menu description sets expectations that are not delivered eg lobster bisque sauce with fish and chips was not apparent in the tartar sauce - nor was the rose harissa oven baked beetroot salad. Cute hotel located in a historic castle. It’s a bit outside of the city center in a quiet neighborhood but makes for a peaceful stay. My friend and I shared a suite and it was quite large. The bathrooms were also quite luxurious and there’s a tub as well as shower. They have free breakfast if you book directly with them, but since we booked it through the Capital One portal, we didn’t have that. The keys themselves are physical keys (not keycards). The front desk is nice and even though there wasn’t a water bottle filling station, they filled them up for us. They were able to hold onto our baggage after we checked out while we explored the area.
