The Duke of York in County Durham

We were staying at a self catering cottage nearby. Had a fantastic meal with family, there was 9 of us and every thing was cooked to perfection and hot! Everyone got served within seconds of each other. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Booked ahead as we know it can get busy in the bar area. Lovely and warm, staff excellent and polite, food freshly made, nice relaxed atmosphere , good service, we will return.

A relaxed, friendly restaurant with good quality food, reasonable prices and attentive service. Following a recent lunch visit, we recommend the following dishes: Chicken nachos (the nachos are more like crackers, but fine). Complemented very well by the accompanying sweet jalapeño jam, and cooling guacamole. Goat's cheese and Bruschetta. A substantial starter. Cumberland sausage and mash. (Dreamily buttery, super-smooth mash.) The onion gravy was nice, but we'd have liked a little more. Three bean Chilli. Pleasantly spiced and very filling. Sticky Toffee Pudding and Custard. (Drenched in toffee sauce, which was very thin and runny but tasty). The 4 stars would have been 5, but for the custard, which, like the toffee sauce, was very thin indeed, so the sponge was awash in runny sweet liquid. Not bad, but the nicely made pudding deserved a much thicker, rich custard. We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit, and will certainly return. Thank you to the talented chef, and hard-working waiting staff.

Booked Christmas Day lunch for all the family, 6 adults and one small child. Never had Christmas Day lunch in a pub before ever, so we were a little bit apprehensive, but we were having a family Christmas holiday locally and decided to try The Duke of York. We weren't at all disappointed. The food and the service were excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. Thanks to Gavin, Imogen and their team for making our Christmas special.

Met with family for a Christmas Eve lunch. Fire was roaring and the staff were extremely welcoming. The food was excellent and despite all of us having at least two courses, the bill was remarkably reasonable. The staff even brought a small bowl of soup, with fresh bread, to keep our young boy happy while the main courses were being prepared. Fabulous experience for all of us and we will be making this a family tradition!

We came across The Duke of York whilst staying the night at a near by air bnb. Prior to making our way home South from a few days break in my real home the Northeast . The food was amazing we can recommend , the filet steak , chicken burger and the scampi ! The home made beer battered onion rings were fab ! We ended our meal with sticky toffee pudding a firm favourite which didn't disappoint . The service was attentive and friendly . Overall we had a lovely experience dinning at The DuKe of York and would highly recommend it .

We stopped for an unplanned lunch on the way to North Yorkshire… the outside looked appealing so a quick turn around back, we found a warm welcoming pub serving great food at a very reasonable price and with a smile! We ate from the light bites menu and by no means was this a light lunch… home made fishfinger sandwich with fries and salad! We enjoyed it so much we booked for Sunday lunch on the way home on the Sunday… it was delicious, lots of lovely veggies and plenty of roast meat (4 to choose from) and was remarkable value at £12:50. Again every one of the servers was warm and friendly including Imogen who checked in with us to see if we had had a good break. Highly recommend for great value, tasty pub food.

We have just returned from an excellent afternoon at the Duke of York. The occasion was my mother's 80th birthday and we had circa 30 guests - family and friends - there for the afternoon in a private area. We have been planning this for a few months and talking to Imogen, who runs the pub, who has been excellent not only in listening to the detail and requirements of our event, but also giving advice and sharing her experience to help ensure that the quantities and timing of the food were right, and also being very patient and flexible when last minute changes were made from our side. On the day, everything was as it should be and the food was excellent. Again, seeing how the afternoon was flowing, she identified and suggested slight changes that really helped things run smoothly. Throughout, Imogen and the team were friendly and helpful, and we can't thank them enough for helping make my Mam's 80th a success. As I type this, I'm still getting messages from people saying how nice the venue and food was. And while it doesn't matter on an occasion like this, we were also very pleasantly surprised at the final bill! Thank you!

Driving the A68 towards A1 Monday 1-15 pm. Our search for lunch revealing closed, closed, shut down, business changed emphasis. Depressing. Passing through Fir tree caught a glimpse of a pub with lights on and cars parked. Shot passed, easily done, take care, but turned round and experienced a well run restaurant. Great affordable food, welcoming hosts and well kept beer. Attention to detail here. If you're there... do it. You'll not regret it.

Here on a break recommended here by the holiday cottage we were staying in just down the road. What a great recommendation! Couldn’t fault it, the fish and chips were delicious, beautifully cooked. Beer was nicely kept and a good pint. Value for money was excellent.

We chanced on this pub when we needed a break traveling from the Midlands to Edinburgh. What a lucky find! The service was friendly and efficient. We chose from the'lite bites' menu. The quality of the food was excellent and portion sizes generous. Very good value for money. Can definitely recommend.

We arrived at the pub we were took to the table after 5 minutes we were asked for a drink got drinks 5 minutes after still waiting for the menu’s 20 minutes later they turned up another 10 minutes till the lady turned up a very long time before we did order the food turned up the meal was very good the service was very poor we won’t be going back due to the service sorry but it was a big let down

Happened across this gem late Friday evening heading north - staff very friendly, quality food at reasonable prices. Also happy to cater for dogs in a pleasant bar area on a busy evening. Fish pie a highlight but other dishes looked superb also. Bit far from home otherwise be regular customers

Visited while in the area visiting family. Table of 6 of us including 3 kids. All well catered for, great value for money decent pub food and refreshing drinks, topped off with fabulous service. Went to the Duke with friends as it was recommended, the meals were beautiful well worth the money , the staff were so friendly as when we tried to order a taxi to go back to our cottage in Bowlees there was none to have as it was the school run so the manager Gavin very kindly took us back in his own car, would definitely visit this place again next time we go to Crook

Usually, we have a fantastic Christmas Day at The Duke, so was this was going to be different... However, weren’t surprised that their organisation to collect the meal was excellent.Our traditional Christmas meal was delicious There was more than enough & piping hot. We highly recommend. First visit. Warm welcome we were celebrating a birthday. We had Italian chicken and Duke chicken with a delicious sauce. Vegetables plentiful and cooked perfectly. Large meal portions, had to ask for a doggy bag for the chicken!!! Very pleasant staff and service was efficient. Very very Covid19 safe. We definitely will return. Well done to all staff. Thank you

We were seated as soon as we arrived and the first thing I noticed was that each table had a bottle of hand sanitiser on it which is a good idea.Drinks were ordered and then 10min later food.Starters we hadHalumi stack Black pudding and bacon stackBoth were nice Mains Sirloin steak Fillet steakBoth served with chips and salad and as a chargeable extra peppercorn sauce, onion rings.On the mains both steaks were very nice although if I ever had again I would not pay the extra for the fillet steak and the sirloin was better.Waiter was pleasant and efficient.I think this would have been a 5 but we had a problem parking as the car park was full and they only had one choice of alcohol free beer.Overall I would say it was a nice place for a reasonable price and I would recommend

We visited twice during our stay in Wolsingham. The food was really good, especially the rump steaks and great value for money. Potions are generous. The tables in the restaurant were well spaced apart and the service was good. I would recommend.

I can not recommend here highly enough. They have gone above and beyond to ensure all Covid measures are met. The staff are fantastic, delivering amazing food and second to none service. You will not be disappointed to dine here.

The meal was average. The tables were a bit too close. The main trouble was one of our party had chosen the Apple crumble and when she started eating found a piece of chicken in the filling, Quite spoilt the whole meal for us all. The staff couldn't offer any explanation of how it ended up in there. They did not charge us for the crumble, but that didn't really make up for the disappointment and retching of the person who had it. Also it could have been quite serious if something that was uncooked was involved.

The food here is fantastic and the service excellent! Thank you. All the food was well cooked, including hand cut real chips! I will be going again soon!

Had Sunday lunch at The Duke of York today 1st time here but definitely not disappointed.Was welcomed by Imogen and shown our table straight away and drinks were with us in less than 2 minutes.Both of us chose Gammon and Turkey and the meal came promptly, lots of fresh vegetables meat was perfectly cooked,roasties and Yorkshire pudding everything was delicious.Prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get.COVID policies were strictly adhered to by all staff so felt very safe.If passing that way I would definitely recommend you stop and call in you won’t be disappointed.

We have been on holiday this week in Wolsingham we had two lovely meals at the Duke of York. Excellent food lovely atmosphere and extremely clean. The staff were lovely and very helpful. On our second visit they were extremely busy with parties in but this did not change the service or quality of the food. Highly recommend to eat here

A great place for Sunday lunch, with the COVID-19 epidemic the Sunday lunch has changed from a carver to a served lunch and it is excellent, it will take some beating. Everything is cooked to perfection and the meats are delicious. The service is also excellent, friendly and very efficient. We also visited for a tea time meal on a week night and was also excellent. Well worth a visit. There’s always a great choice on the menu and a fantastic selection of desserts.

The food was amazing best steak I’ve ever had. The staff were fantastic very attentive, polite and professional. I was massively impressed with the social distancing measures too. Staff wore masks, tables set with loads of distance between them and hand sanitiser on every table. Visit the Duke - you will not be disappointed!

The food was very tasty and well presented. There wasnt a huge choice and my partner wasnt happy the hand cut chips had the skin on. I found them to be delicious and struggled to manage my full meal. The tables were well spaced out and didnt feel on top of each other. On the whole, thoroughly enjoyable.

We prebooked a table for lunch, and chose to sit outside in the sunshine. We enjoyed really good food - steaks, ribs and chicken in leek sauce, followed by desserts. The waitresses were very friendly and helpful and wore masks.The tables were well spaced, and a number of people were turned away as they had not booked, even though there appeared to be tables available. We felt very safe - our first venture out since lockdown.I'd certainly recommend the Duke of York for a lovely meal.

We came here for my other halfs birthday and have to say we were impressed from the off. Were met at the door and seated. On entering the dining area we could see hand sanitizer on every table which were well spaced out all the staff wore masks and we're very efficient and well drilled. Because of covid the menu was reduced , however the selection was still decent and reasonably priced I had the Scampi and the Mrs the cod they were both served with real chips which were to die for.all in all a great experience in very testing times,so hats off to the staff for all the hard work they have put in to make this work. I would highly recommend this place.

This was our first visit to a restaurant after lockdown and we chose The Duke of York because the website was well written and explained all the safety measures in place. We were not disappointed. We felt completely safe and the service and food were excellent. We were celebrating a wedding anniversary and had a fabulous evening.

Me and my husband came here for a meal tonight and it was by far one of the best meals we've had. The service was first class and the food exceptional. We both had the fillet steak and it was faultless; cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. The chocolate brownie for dessert was also incredible. I highly recommend a visit to this wonderful place!!

Called in for a meal 5.30pm on Tuesday night. Ordered the sirloin with extra king prawns and chips with a bottle of shiraz. Better half had the Duke's chicken. Both meals promptly served and excellently cooked and presented. Will definitely be back and fully recommend this place. The locals in the bar seemed very happy too.

Visited here with daughter and dog, lovely open fires, friendly welcoming staff and fantastic variety and quality of food - a far cry from traditional “ pub grub”Food was freshly prepared, beautifully presented and incredibly tasty. Would highly recommend the halloumi, pepper and mushroom stackers. We planned on sharing the tempting sounding chocolate fondue for dessert but were so full that my daughter even struggled to finish her delicious brownie. Very impressed with our visit.

Tried the Sunday diner here was pretty good service was quick and the price fair. The area we sat in was a bit canteen like but we were just going to eat and go I never went in the main bar area.

We stopped here on our way to a holiday in Northumberland, simply because it 'looked nice'. Inside the pub is warm and comfortable; the staff were very welcoming. We ordered lunch for 2 adults and 2 kids and were not disappointed The food was freshly made and delicious (especially the chips!) Great food, great ambience and great service.

Quite a disappointment. We had to wait 45 mins for our food and the pasta was bland and bitter therefore one of our party went without food. I tried the pasta dish myself and it wasn't pleasant.It's not very reasonably priced for the contents of the meal.We skipped desserts as we were unimpressed with the main course.

Visited tonight to celebrate husband’s birthday. We had a lovely reception, a fantastic meal and a surprise birthday brownie - complete with candle!! Imogen, Helen and Grace made it a really special evening. Thank you.

We visited during the afternoon with our friends and were very satisfied with the service and the food. The black pudding starter was excellent, as were the gammon, amaretto cheesecake and chocolate fondue. The service was also excellent, knowledgable and very friendly. Will be visiting again.

I went to Duke of York with my husband and my son and his family on New Years Day for lunch Had carvery which was excellent good choice of meat and vegetables. Had desserts and a a lovely time with family did not feel we were rushed every though they had another sitting Price very good and good value for money.

We called in here today while out and about. Regarding the food- there was nothing to complain about but nothing exceptional about it either..just average! However the whole ambience was ruined when the young waitress (with the long hair thats not tied back) had to move tables and chairs to create a bigger table for a large family. The noise she made by dragging and throwing the chairs and tables about was deafening and she had absolutely no consideration at all for the diners who had to tolerate this noise while eating. We had to put our conversation on hold because of this. Two staff should have delt with this request for a bigger table and it would have taken half the time and our dining experiance would have been a million times better. When we dine out its not 'just' about the food but the whole ambience and this place failed miserably. We also were not offered any sauces and had to ask. We were not asked if we enjoyed our meal.

Visited here with a 17 strong group of friends, service was very good, with all the meals coming out at the same time, I had the Belly Pork, which was very nice, a well seasoned and flavoured gravy, perfect crackling and colcannon, I’ll definitely visit again as I hear they do a good Sunday lunch

WIth me working away for two weeks my wife and i decided to meet up half way and chose to try out the Duke of York. Having been a good few years since we were last here it seemed like a good idea. Bringing the inlaws along for the journey we met up and found the bar area quiet but inviting.

Best steak in the Bishop Auckland Area by far. Second visit don’t know why I left it so long. Decent price too.

We popped in here on my birthday for a bit of food as a treat. It was lovely to see a fair few people in there for a monday, which in a lot of pubs now is unheard of, and the food was lovely. We both had a starter, a main and a drink and it was about £40 I think so not super cheap, but the food was very nice so for me it was worth it. I always feel like good chips are a really good sign of properly cooked food in a pub, and these chips were lush! No anaemic straight out the freezer ones here! We will definitely be back again as it is only a few minutes from our new house, so thank you.

We had two meals here, on Sunday and then on Wednesday. It's a busy pub, with alot of local folk eating. Good ale, served well. Good and efficient service, though a smile or two would have been nice. Food was well priced and tasty. Found the chips rather soggy, but that's my taste. Desserts are good. The cheese cake in particular was fab.

We have passed the Duke of York many times but have never called in. On this occasion we needed to meet for a family dinner in Fir Tree.

Delighted that a local pub/restaurant does such lovely cheap bar lunches. We had hot pork sandwich in a ciabatta bun with hand cut chips and salad for only £6.95. It was delicious.

A fabulous varied menu we had a 3 course lunch everything cooked to perfection. Wonderfully friendly staff, nothing too much trouble. Can’t recommend this pub highly enough. Superb
