Worth tracking down............an original non yuppy pub on the edge of the Cotswolds. We have been 3 times now in the last few months and each time the service is excellent and the food very good. Lovely garden and a 2nd WW11 Lysander in the garden! A tiny plane that used to drop people behind the lines to help particularly the French Resistance.

So disappointed with the Sunday lunch. We have enjoyed fabulous roasts here in the past and it had been several months since we last visited. However this time, the beef didnt look like beef, it was hard, the potatoes were black/burnt the vegetables were boring/non descript and the gravy was like water. (The gravy used to be outstanding, rich and full of flavour). To top it all, I've had an upset stomach all morning today. I don't know what has happened, or if the usual chef was away, but this was a very poor experience, sorry to say.

Cotswold stone pub with open fire pool table and a dartboard. Good choice of ales clean and tidy, quite a choice of food from burgers to tapas. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality, a freshly cooked spanish omlette starter was excellent and sea bass main. Not a pretentious gastro pub, well worth a visit. Good value.

I have just had the most amazing meal at this pub! I am a vegan and was struggling to find some where that served some decent food? We nearly missed this beautiful pub, but Lauren the amazing barmaid came out and encouraged us to come in! We were so pleased that she did! I explained that I am vegan and she said that the chef could make me a mushroom risotto and it was the most delicious risotto I have ever eaten! We were made to feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble! Thanks to Russell the amazing Chef and Lauren for welcoming us into this beautiful pub in a stunning location! We came from Banbury and have decided that this beautiful place will be our new local! Very reasonable prices for super tasty food! Thanks so much guys, you really made our day!😄😋😍

Stayed for 1 night whilst in the area on business. Came down for my evening meal and found out there was a quiz night on. Had a great time sat with the owners, Rebecca & Tim, whilst competing against the other teams. There was a fun camaraderie about the evening and everyone had a great time. (I came 3rd out of 4 in case you wondered) The food was fantastic, staff were attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. The room was modern and had everything that was needed. Bed was very comfortable, the bath was a bonus and the room was everything you would want. WiFi was quick and stable, more than enough space inside to work in and enjoy everything that the duje has to offer. Looking forward to my next stay here.

We camped... Positives- good toilet -shower facilities. Location great. Lots of walks close by. Dog friendly. Negatives - overloading electric points with splitters, therefore sometime couldn't even boil a kettle. Could've been more friendly and amenable. Overbooked and caravans 2 to 1 pitch. Breaking fire regs and safety rules. Lose dogs roaming and fouling on pitch areas. Would I visit again . Unfortunately, no

It's a long time since i posted a review but we unexpectedly tipped up at this pub this afternoon. Quite simply this was the best Sunday lunch we've had for some time, it's nowhere near where we live but I'm sure we'll find an excuse to revisit. Good quality food, not overcooked as many pubs are wont to do, and a reasonable price (£14 for the main course). The staff were excellent too, thank you.

I wish I had read the reviews before we went! I have never been served such poorly cooked food. Frankly shoe leather would have been better than the alleged ‘braised’ beef and the chicken was dry and as tough as old boots - all served with overcooked soggy vegetables. The Eton mess was a joke - shop bought meringue nest with squirty cream on top, followed by luke warm coffee. Never again. The only saving grace was the smiley waitresses. I emailed our feedback to the pub as didn’t want to resort to trip advisor ……no reply. Save your money is my advice.

Ordered a fish and chips from them on just eat, food was absolutely disgusting. The chips were soggy and cold. The fish was cheap and could only be described as a frozen Iceland slap of odds and ends. Ordered the thai chicken wings which were no better then frozen wings with copious amounts of chilli sauce on them. To top it off it took over and hour to arrive and cost £18 for the privilege. I would suggest any form of supermarket own brand microwave meal which would have more flavour and less grease.

We had dinner here and everyone was greatly disappointed with their meals. The food was cooked to a very poor standard and completely not worth the prices we were charged. We were quite surprised as had read so many great reviews about the food beforehand (I wonder if they have changed chef or management recently?). For example, my steak was probably one of the worst I have ever had and not cooked to my request despite the waitress specifically asking how I would like it done. The portions of veg were all quite small and one person’s potato was undercooked. We also heard other guests complaining about their food to the staff that evening. Hopefully they can take our feedback and improve their kitchen standards for future guests.

Stayed one night. It’s a striking thatched roof building. The rooms are not en suite, although the room named the Sett has an adjacent private bathroom. The doors are heavy and difficult to open, but it’s part of the experience frankly. The room itself was large, the bed comfy, adequate coffee, tea milk and kettle available. Dressing gowns and great bath sheet towels. The bar is classic pub, good selection of ales on draft esp the Porter. The evening meal was frankly outstanding. The shared Camembert starter was truly wonderful. The main of scampi was excellent , the fish and chips absolutely wow and huge. The thrice cooked chips also very worthy. The service was efficient and friendly. The wine a Rioja I thought would be average as it was a screw top, mid £20’s , but it was excellent, really smooth. Breakfast just so traditional, again well presented and there’s a host of options. If the need arises I’d go back, there are several low wooden ceiling beams, I managed to avoid all but one. A box of tissues in the bedroom would have been welcome.

Before we even arrived at The Duke, help was on hand from the delightful Pippa who advised and guided us on how to reach our destination. We were experiencing a sat nav malfunction and our car was leaking fluid so we were in need and she bestowed wise counsel upon us.When we arrived we were greeted outside by Harry, a charming, grey and white haired husky dog, he made us very welcome immediately. What a lovely view from outside, beautiful garden area and thatched building. Locals very friendly too.We met Pippa inside, she gave us a number for a local mechanic then showed us to our room. It was perfectly clean, lovely en suite with nice bath and great view from our window. Also... very comfortable bed, we had a very good night's sleep there. We dined in the restaurant downstairs and had the pleasure of meeting Russ, the talented chef who talked us through our many vegan options, we were spoilt for choice. We ordered and were not disappointed, fabulous food, homemade and freshly prepared, thank you Russ, we enjoyed meeting you. Whilst dining we took in the beauty of the old building with it's original features. Our server that evening was Hugh the legend, he is what every person in hospitality should aspire to be like. All in all, great price, wonderful people, excellent service, it was a shame we didn't book for longer. We will definitely be returning.Thank you everyone for making our stay so terrific, thanks to Denise and Rebecca also.

Firstly a huge thank you to the owners of this fantastic pub, and to the chef for caring so much about their food. We were looking for a place for Sunday lunch and found the Duke almost by accident, what a find! Let me just say that having eaten out a lot in the last few years we have been looking for a place that can do a Sunday lunch better that you can do at home, that's why we eat out right? Better than you can do yourself. Our lunch today was seriously the best roast dinner we've had anywhere, everything was perfection, we had the pork belly and the kids had the chicken, the kids love a good Yorkshire pudding and blimey these things were huge, the kids faces were a picture and they kept commenting how good they were (better than mum and dad's) . The pork belly was gorgeous, we will be back very soon as the beef looked amazing too, apologies to the table behind us if I kept looking over, it looked beautiful. Again many thanks to the owners for caring so much about their guests and making the experience very memorable.

Not really sure where to start with this review as we stayed in our caravan on their campsite and had an amazing dinner in the pub. From the moment we arrived we were greeted with warm smiles and lovely friendly attitudes. The campsite is lovely and peaceful- close enough to the pub that it is a short walk and far enough away that you are not disturbed. The showers and toilets are very good. But .. the best bit of our stay was dinner .. we had booked a table and when we walked into the pub we were seated quickly with all the staff taking the time to say hello as they walked past the table. The pub has an excellent wine list and all very reasonably priced with the white barrel aged Rioja absolutely fantastic. Orders were taken really quickly and the food was fab .. we had starters of the mushrooms and the salmon prawn and monkfish terrine followed by smoked haddock and a sirloin steak. The food came out quickly and obviously prepared with care and thought. In all we had a brilliant weekend and we will be returning as soon as we have another weekend free. What an absolute gem of a pub.

Fantastic stay for 2 nights camping with my friend and her tent. We were recommended to stay here by a friend who lives in Burford. We were really impressed with the camping facilities as we paid for electric hook up, best thing we have done, really cheap, nice friendly campers who practically put up our tent while we served the ladies vodka and gin. The owners of The Duke were pleasant, polite and very helpful and did everything they could, especially after our nightmare taxi journey (that’s another review) that we should have said and they would have took us.... very nice gesture.Sunday lunch time was very busy, we didn’t get to sample the dinners but by the smell and the amount of cars there they must be amazing. Old stone built, thatched village pub, close to the county border with Northants. Internally it has been tastefully modernised, retaining much of its original character. They pride themselves on sourcing locally produced food and drink, which is highly commendable. Four well chosen ales on handpump include the locally brewed Hooky and Turpin's Golden Citra which also comes from the village of Hook Norton and was excellent. For food, the Rump of Local Lamb with Puy lentils & a Medley of vegetables (£14.95) sounded appealing but proved a disappointment. The lamb was flavoursome enough but, unfortunately, rather tough; the lentils were alright but as for the medley of vegetables, these were virtually non-existent. Expecting a nice selection of about four or five different fresh, seasonal vegetables, what actually was served amounted to nothing more than just a very tiny amount of peas (almost certainly frozen, at this time of year) and chopped pieces of green beans, mixed in with the lentils. Would I eat here again? Yes, I probably would give them another try, but would order something different next time.

We went to The Duke for Sunday lunch and were greeted by extremely friendly and helpful staff. Our order was for two roast dinners, they looked appetising and were very tasty, the only downside was that they needed more gravy. We spoke to our waitress and a small jug of gravy arrived in double quick time. The time came to pay and we were given our bill, to our surprise there was a charge of £1.75 for the gravy: we had not seen any mention of this of this on the menu and questioned the matter with the staff. The answer was that they had been told by the owners that the charge must be made. We left with a nasty taste in our mouths. Will we return??

I headed here with a colleague for a nights stay, we were slightly concerned about the booking due to seeing a few 1 star rated reviews, all I can say is that the folks that left these reviews need to have a long hard stare at themselves in one of the Duke's spotless mirrors and order the soup of the day to warm up their cold dead hearts. The lady running the bar and sorting out our check in that night was Denise, Denise through lack of any other words suitable for description is an absolute hero, a superman/spiderman/batman hybrid would pale in comparison to her, if I was falling from a sky scraper I would shout Denise and I am pretty certain she would appear to scoop me up. She couldn't do enough to help, played great music and had a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of 80's and 90's music. Well played Denise you made our stay warm, welcoming and we felt well looked after. The food was fantastic and compliments to the chef, we started with the Butchers Board and the White Bait and moved on to the catch of the day and chips and a steak pudding. But what about puddings I hear you cry...as tempting as they looked we were so full from the generous portions that we couldn't fit them in, I feel a trip back needs to be had so we can try them out.

The Duke of Cumberland's Head. Not a name that trips of the tongue. In fact it was something of a battle to get anything anywhere near the tongue. A fairish wait for our order to be taken and then a long wait for our food to arrive. But our troubles had only just begun. Despite asking for more drinks twice (I'm sorry we are busy.) I ended up going to the bar to collect them myself (sorry, we are stretched tonight.) When the food came one dish was without the advertised mushrooms and requests for these and additional items had to be repeated. The place wasn't even half full so if you go on a busy night take a good book. I shall be generous about the quality of the food itself. Poor. The worst place I've been to in a very long time.

Wonderful looking place, really attentive, friendly staff. BUT... the flush for the toilet in the bedroom didn’t work most of the time, the bed was awfully creaky (thus making sleeping quite unpleasant), the bathroom door would not close (had to be forced shut, then locked), the choice for food on the menu, for me, was pretty average- and I’m not a fussy eater... the signal for the TV was non existent and nets for the windows would have been nice- considering how hot it was, having to close the curtains was not ideal. I wouldn’t hurry to recommend this place to anyone- there’s nothing about the place that would make me want to come back, unfortunately.

I visited the Duke of Cumberland on Sunday 3rd June with 4 friends for a late lunch at 4ish. I ordered the calves liver, which is one of my favourite dishes. When it arrived it was as tough as leather, completely over-cooked and covered with a thick salty gravy. It was inedible. I asked for another dish on the menu, but they had run out. I then asked for another dish (prawn and rice noodle salad). I explained to the barman that I had been driving for some hours and still had a long journey back on the road. My friends by this time had finished their meals, and were keen to get back on the road. It however took a whole hour for my cold assembled salad to arrive. It wasn’t even lunchtime or particularly busy. We also had 2 drinks which didn’t arrive and we had to ask again. I tried to chase up my food order twice and asked to speak to the manager, but was told there was no manager on site. When the dish finally arrived, I had to wolf it down in 5 minutes and it was very indifferent. I wasn’t charged for the meal or belated drink, but I would never return here. Poor service and terrible food.

After driving passed, I was pleased to see it had reopened, as it was once a favourite eating place. We booked a table for 7 for Sunday lunch. It was a hot day, so we were asked if we wanted to eat outside. We said yes and a table would be made up for us. After ordering drinks at the bar we were shown to our table. It was a table for 4 with 7 napkins and cutlery placed in the middle. So as it was very quiet and hardly any other people eating, we duly moved some tables together. After waiting rather a long time one of us went into the bar to say we were ready to order. The starters were fine. Main course took an age to come, with one serving arriving well after everyone else was almost finished. Asked for English Mustard and Horseradish for the roast beef, no horseradish and the mustard was for an American style for burgers. The deserts menu very limited, no imagination, and the ice-cream to accompany a bonofee pie had completely melted. Add this to waitress spilling drinks on my wife’s white trousers, laughing it off, and every time we asked them not to pour the mixer in the G&T;’s they did so drowning out any taste.

We used this pub as a stopover on the way to family in the midlands. I almost didn't want to write a review as we wanted to 'keep' it for ourselves! We stayed in our motorhome basically in the pub car park due to the regular campsite that is attached to the pub being a bit boggy, well it is February! We had booked a meal at the pub which was lovely, the pub was busy but the service was good and food and drinks arrived swiftly. We then returned to our motorhome for a peaceful night. The next day I had cause to go into the pub to get some water as the water in the campsite field was frozen, unsurprisingly because the temperature was in the minuses. I then found the showers which were kept to a very high standard. So all was good, turns out the owner is a motorhomer and he and his wife have got this place spot on. We will return in the summer and make the most of the campsite and garden. Cheers.

On arrival we were shown directly to our table and asked for our choice of drinks which were delivered promptly. Food orders were soon taken and despite the restaurant filling up fast we did not have to wait too long for our starters - pan-fried prawns and fish parfait. Both items were well presented and tasty. We have been here a few times since the Duke reopened and it gets better each time we visit. It has undergone a lovely refurbishment and is a very welcoming environment. We have put up some of our business associates overnight and they loved it too. The food is good honest pub food and there's a great range of wine, beers and gin!

Visited this pub for the 1st time despite living locally for over 15yrs. It has been refurbished to a high standard. We had the smoked fish parfait and chicken liver pate to start - both of which were delicious but the real treat was the roast sirloin and roast loin of pork - possibly the best pub roast I've eaten. Nice size portions and really good value at £12.95. We didn't order desserts but we saw the baileys cheesecake and banoffee waffles which looked lovely. There is also camping & caravans at the back of the pub. We would recommend this pub

The pub has just experienced a recent makeover which was well done and appropriate after a chequered history.

Arrived having booked a table for 4 and seated on a table obviously only meant for 2 people as indicated by fellow diners to the side of us. Some chairs too high (or table too low) making it uncomfortable, to be fair we were asked if it was ok so we requested an alternative ultimately being seated in the bar area.

I made a booking at The Duke several weeks ago for a special meal as my partner & I met there on a blind date exactly 5 years ago. Our memories of our first visit there were excellent.

We visit this place quite often to eat and it's friendly and welcoming! Under new ownership which is trying hard to ensure service and food are always great. The pub had a great re-furb after a period of closure, it's now a lovely environment. For summer months there is plenty of outdoor space for all to enjoy. Dog and walker friendly it's a great stop for anyone walking from surrounding villages either side of Clifton. A good range of beers and wines at reasonable prices all make it a worthwhile visit!!

We used this pub in the old days before it closed and we thought it had gone forever. However it has been reopened and we decided to go with 2 friends for a meal. We read the latest trip advisor reviews which were awful but we don't ever believe trip advisor as everyone is different about their food likes and dislikes and how can you be sure these people have ever even been to the establishment as no checks are made.

Thirteen of us had Sunday lunch here on 6th August, and the group included vegetarians, vegans, coeliacs and two dairy free. The staff were very attentive and patient whilst we checked all the options and we all had fabulous meals.

Stayed one night in the comfortable Loft room. Each room has a different name, ours had the bathroom and wardrobe up the stairs that were in the room. This made the room nice and quirky. Everything was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The full English breakfast and Vegetarian breakfast were lovely and very filling. This is an ideal location if you are touring the countryside, or camping as there is a campsite at the back of the pub. We did not have a meal at night but it was busy with people eating.

We went with friends for their anniversary and we were all extremely disappointed. We had booked a table for 8pm and our starters arrived at 9.30pm, after we had chased them up. Our table was near the bar and you couldn't hold a proper conversation because it was noisy and crowded, so you felt you had people on top of you. The starters were mediocre and three of the four main courses had to be sent back. One of the main courses was the Thai king prawn curry, the prawns were whole and I was expected to fish them out the sauce and completely peel them, heads and all without a finger bowl. Sea bass was off and the duck was so tough it couldn't be cut. We didn't bother with dessert, besides it was now 10:30pm and our taxi had arrived. Overall, food terrible, but the waiting staff were lovely and we felt very sorry for them.

We used to drive through Clifton daily and we're disappointed to see the pub closed with 'The Great Wall' erected round it, so we were so glad that it had been taken on by a Clifton resident and transformed into a welcoming, relaxing and charming place. We called in for drinks to have a nose at the new place. Excellent choice of wines and beers, so we came on a busy Saturday night on the off chance they might have a table for two and were told there would be a bit of a wait, we were happy to sit in the garden with a very nice glass of Rose. The wait was minimal (still on my first glass!!). Seated and order taken promptly. .We were not disappointed, the food was delicious, portion size good and staff attentive without being intrusive. Would definitely return, in fact I did for a mid week lunch, 2 4 1 offer with lovely choice of the usual pub classics, portion perfect for lunch and again , service spot on. Topped off with cuddles with the pub dog. Well done all, our new local, despite living 12 miles away! !

My family and I went for supper on Saturday night. Understanding that the pub has recently been acquired by new owners I would allow a few hiccups, however, it wasn't good enough at all. The building is beautiful and the staff friendly however they are incredibly disorganised, we watched our food being taken to the wrong table and were checked back on by three members of staff at times. The Diet Coke tasted like pump cleaning fluid and the white wine was very warm. The food was clearly frozen or of poor quality, especially the burger which was dry and tough. The food is unfortunately rather overpriced for what we got and I would have expected much more. I hope the owners are willing to take on board suggestions as the pub has great potential and could be a fine dining/gastro success - good luck for the future!

Stayed in the campsite at this pub for a couple of nights. The campsite is perfection. I was therefore very disappointed when four of us chose to eat in the restaurant on Saturday evening. I really wanted to be equally impressed with the food as I was with the campsite. I wasn't.

This is my much loved local so it may not be completely unbiased but I've just taken my wife and 16 year old daughter to dinner here and we all really enjoyed it. My wife had the same sea bass I really enjoyed last visit and my daughter and I had an 8oz burger as I had the first visit some 6 weeks ago. For me it's 2ozs more than I need on a week day but my daughter finished hers well. Very tasty with bacon, cheese and fresh vegetables and a good few chips. The Shed Head IPA is very good (as is the Side Pocket bitter - next time perhaps) and the ambience is very friendly and comfortable. It's a sign of good management that the food remains very consistent irrespective of whose in the kitchen. The menu is somewhat basic but it's good pub food with the occasional dish like the sea bass lifting it from the norm. This augers well for the future.

Menu choice a bit limited but what they do, based on our experience, is very good, and since we were looking for a traditional roast, not a problem. We both had the roast beef which was excellent, cooked well, not well cooked. We both like our beef rare and this was available - quality beef served to perfection. The accompanying vegetables, a mix of green beans, cauliflower, and broccoli were also cooked perfectly. Roast potatoes similarly excellent, capped off with a Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Finished with one desert, Eton mess. Total cost £37.35 including a pint and a half of bitter - great value.

Recently reopened after a long closure, looks clean & tidy but lost none of its charm. The food was very good, my wife had two starters & I had sausage & mash both really good. However the menu is very restricted & fish & chips not on! The young staff very friendly & efficient but not very busy. Prices reasonable & the Hooky beer in excellent form. Hope it keeps going but needs to do something different to drag the punters in.

The main thing to report is that after a long closure this pub has been refurbished and re-opened in April 2017. The Trip advisor address (Main st. Banbury) is wrong as the pub is in Clifton near Deddington and the new owners seem to prefer the pub to be known at the Duke at Clifton. Basic well cooked pub grub from limited menu at present and no veggie offer. Promises of more variety to follow and a website (which has not yet happened at the time of writing). Dog friendly. Many months of work and investment seem to have gone into this venture so full marks for keeping the village pub. One to try.

Booked a table for a special anniversary lunch on a Sunday. No problems with the reservation and the staff were friendly and welcoming. We were disappointed with the menu choice which was rather limited (probably a restricted menu for Sunday lunch). We opted for the pate to start followed by roast shoulder of lamb for main. The pate was really good but sadly we could not say the same for the roast shoulder of lamb which proved to be somewhat tough and chewy. The vegetables were also a little undercooked for my liking. Perhaps we just made the wrong choice but I felt the chef could have done a lot better. I did wonder if he had even tried the meat before he served any of it. I certainly would not have served it to a paying customer.

We visited this pub while attending a family function. The pub is clean and inviting with lovely traditional decor. The staff are friendly and hardworking. I always prefer to visit pubs and restaurants that aren't part of a chain or franchise because I find that independent pubs offer higher quality food and that is certainly true in the case of this pub.

Had a meal at this delightful pub one Saturday evening. The pub is gorgeous to look at honey coloured stone coupled with a thatched roof, oodles of curb appeal. There's a lovely outside seating area to the rear of the pub, perfect for a warm sunny day. Inside doesn't disappoint: low ceilings, beams and a wonderful open fire. It's very much a food pub rather than one you would go to for a casual drink.

a couple of friends and myself had been geocaching locally and decided to stop here for lunch after our exertions. I suddenly had an urge for a good old fashioned ploughmans but hardly any pub does them nowaday. Instead i had the most delicious selection of Italian meats, sumptuous sundried tomatos and olives with outstanding breads. Absoluting fantastic. I'll definitely be back to try the rest of the pubs menu.

Wow, I have driven past this pub on many occasion. From the front it looks small and as the front door is closed, I have always presumed that it was closed. However drive into the car park and the huge and beautiful garden greets you. The pub has been sympathetically decorated and is welcoming to everyone including our 2 year old daughter. The menus are typical of what you would expect for a country pub but the quality of the food is exceptional. It never seems busy during week day lunches although there are often offers on!!!

We stayed here for a pit stop overnight when visiting family in a nearby village and this place didn't disappoint. We received a very warm welcome from the landlord and landlady and check in was a breeze. They have a great selection of alcohol and it was really pleasing to see a village pub so busy. The building itself is stunning and much larger than I thought it would be with an extended restaurant and outdoor area with seating. The room had everything we needed for the night, including a bath and a shower and it overlooked the town square which was nice and quiet. The bed was very comfortable and we slept soundly. Our room was number 2. The breakfast menu has something for everyone with a selection of cooked and non cooked options and you can tell quality ingredients were used. It was a shame this was a flying visit as the the evening and Sunday lunch menu looked fantastic and we will be sure to try these on our next visit. Overall we felt very welcomed and the pub has a very homely feel to it, we will be sure to stay again next time we are passing.
