The Duke is under new ownership now and the improvements to the food are noted. Much simpler main course menu and much tastier. A few gripes. If you order food, they charge you for table service even if you order at the bar. In my opinion this is unacceptable. Firstly, you can’t charge for table service if you’re not providing it!! Secondly because you are paying in advance, if the order/ service isn’t up to scratch then there is no opportunity to refuse the service payment. This makes it a mandatory charge. That needs to be made clear to customers. The other thing is that the new menu has no dessert option. Not even ice cream. That’s not great. All in all. A better experience than under the previous owners, who were pretty awful. But still improvements needed.

We held a birthday party here last week. It was fab. The pub allowed us to use the 'snug' at the side of the pub with its own bar and lovely sofa seats. We agreed their catering and the food was to die for. We had a buffet menu with about 8 different dishes all of good quality and generous helpings and at the end they made us a vegan Wellington which was to die for with amazing gravy. Thanks to Stefan our bar person and Alex and Adrian for Management. Everyone who came to the party said it was a great venue. Thanks to all at the DukeE17.

I went here with a friend tonight for a late night drink and dance. It was tragic. The music is super loud so no one could interact and there were only a couple of bored looking people in there. A waste of a nice London pub.

So this is my local pub. Food has never really been good and it’s been closed recently due to “spring clean”. It’s convenient and tolerates kids so we keep giving it a go. I went in tonight as it’s reopened and thought why not. Literally….my advice to anyone going here. Do not order food here. It’s not good, McDonald’s is a better option, seriously I’m not even being overly savage a chicken shop would be a better option. The food tonight was some of the worst I have ordered probably ever. Frozen and lazy yet charging “London” prices. Also on their Instagram pics of them serving Guinness in Guinness glasses yet every time I’m there ……no Guinness glass in sight! Are you guys photoshopping pics I don’t understand this pub! This place needs to decide what it is and what they are trying to do… go to a pub like the castle and you can see an effort is being made. The duke is a lazy attempt of a pub.

First visit to this pub in a long time, and it used to be a very nice and descent pub! Met up with some friends here and what a disappointment! Sadly we was greeted by lacklustre staff, after short wait, clearly inexperienced in bar knowledge and customer service! Poor range of drinks, this is Walthamstow with some fantastic microbrewery’s on its doorstep, but sadly let down by this bars offerings! The quality of the drinks wasn’t great, and sadly we left after 2 rounds to to to a pub 2 mins walk away which was far, far better!

Very strong smell of urine had to leave straight away. Went in there to visit family, and had to find somewhere else

This pub is my local, I come here regularly. The vibe of the pub is great, and excellent mix of families and young people socialising. Decent music and lovely staff. A MASSIVE issue is the food. Over the last 6-9 months the food has seriously gone down hill. It’s really expensive and really poor. The sharing platter- seriously, £18 for a dollop of rocket and some cheap ‘lips & @rsehole’ cured meat- you’d be better off going to the Co-Op next door and getting a pack of salami for £1.50. Chef, grill the chorizo!! Lazy man, pure lazy!! The fish and chips, soggy batter and funky tasting fish. The burgers are sloppy… Even the chips. Over cooked and soooooo salty!! It’s such a shame. In most aspects it’s a great pub. But please sort out the kitchen!!! I’d hate for anyone to get sacked, but the Chef needs to improve. Quickly!

Came in for first time as went to co-op to buy Xmas cookies for wife ( too much info) ! Never saw pub before but looked awesome from outside so ventured in to see staff slamming chalkboards on tables , and when ordering a pint of aspalls £4.90 had a member of staff who didn’t interact and just through down a card machine turned his head as I held a £10 note to which I then had to ask is cash ok , he then said yes and dunked the money in my hand and the 10 p went flying and he just turned nonchalantly away! Worst service ever for a first experience! Toilets are archaic , a baby changing room in the most unsanitary cold toilet I’ve ever seen ! The company obviously cares about exteriors and not staff or interiors ! So enthused and then so let down !

Disappointed by our meals. Bland very basic expensive food, which takes me back to not very good chicken in a basket times. No vegetables served with main meals and no option to buy vegetable side dishes. Tables sticky and music a bit too loud. Wood St has excellent eateries on it but the Duke needs to seriously up its game for me to go back.

I like this pub. Its got a great vibe and a decent drink selection. However it’s really let down by the food. We’ve eaten there a few times now and sadly have to write it off. Dry burgers, dry pie, we were told not to get the steak by the staff because it was apparently very average and finally the roast (beef and lamb) is really poor. Bisto gravy, potatoes that seemed like they’d been microwaved, and frankly meat that seemed like it was from a £5 carvery. It’s a shame to write this because it’s a lovely pub with lovely service staff. But the kitchen properly lets it down. I wouldn’t have even bothered to write the review, but nearly £16 for that “roast” was really not ok. Go for a drink, don’t go to eat. Not until they sort the kitchen out.

We were a family of 5 and we had a lunch time treat there.Really good veggie options included in the menu.

I love the duke, the new menu is amazing, great staff , friendly and really on it when it comes to dealing with the government restrictions. We had dinner there last night , sat outside in a pod with a heater.

I live a 5 minute walk away from the duke (as opposed to some out of towners who seem to review every London pub negatively) and so go a couple of times per month. Walthamstow is family friendly, and the duke is a great example of an inclusive family friendly pub. The new menu is really good as it did used to be a bit limited (although still tasty). We have a dog and a child. Our dog gets a bowl of water, and our child gets no extra attention at all whilst us PAYING CUSTOMERS stay for a few hours at a time, especially during lockdown to help support our local. Ignore the out of town gammon a few reviews below, the duke is great with fast friendly service and a comprehensive track / trace / covid policy in place which the staff ensure is followed. If people don’t follow it they are asked to leave, simple. Finally, get the kapow on draft - great fresh east London beer.

Really great burger and chips! Great value considering the whole of East London is apparently worth an arm and a leg. I paid 10 quid for the burger with fries! It was juicy and the best I’ve had in such a long time! In addition - we stayed for the DJ in the evening and had such a fun night. Good vibes, cheap drinks! I couldn’t recommend enough.

Ordered the pulled pork burger. Instead of getting pulled pork in my burger there were strips of meat which resembled doner kebab meat. Although the taste was okay, the doner like meat was not very nice and some of it was a bit tough to eat. I ordered the blue cheese chips with it but unfortunately the side was very little blue cheese with the chips. My partner ordered the American cheese burger but unfortunately it came with no cheese and the burger itself was dry.

My friend had booked her birthday here tonight and we arrived and the horrible woman who worked behind the counter chucked everyone out because she clearly couldn’t be bothered to sort anything out. We had reserved the area with the stage two weeks ago, we have emails with the other manager proving our reservation, and there was a reserved sign on the area with our name on it. She said she didn’t know we had a booking and was incredibly rude - stating that she “didn’t like” my friends face so she wouldn’t serve us and didn’t want us in the pub. Because of her face. Absolutely disgusting that this woman is a manager. She turned away 30 people for no other reason than her laziness and her ego. To anyone who’s considering going to this pub don’t bother - hit up the Nags Head instead who saved our night!
