We have been there on previous years and hence thought we'd go back this year. Took forever to get hold of the manager for the booking... he is rarely about and the staff never know his whereabouts, never got email confirmation which we were promised several times...Starters and main were great... took forever for the dessert to arrive and it was not even average. Staff look sullen, no one asked how the meal was and if we needed anything, no offer of coffee... yet there was an expectation for service charge... we refused to pay the service charge as we felt we didn't really have service... and the manager did not even have the courtesy to say hi and if all was going well.Don't think we will be returning again for our company Christmas meal... what a shame it's gone down hill ...we so enjoyed the previous years there.

We came here for our Christmas meal and were treated very badly throughout by the staff. After they entirely forgot to give us our first course there was no apology and only scowls from the waitress. The standard of service was poor throughout and a service charge was added anyway. Needless to say for a much needed celebration we were not happy and won't be returning.

I first knew of this place during a business gathering and was very impressed with the layout. Immediately upon entrance is a beautiful dark spiral stair case, but once entering inside, you get this instant feel of cosiness and warmth.Been coming here very frequently as friends have held their birthday dinners here, social gatherings and I even held a Photo Shoot here and let me tell you...If you appreciate great food, top service, enjoy summer drinks on the terrace, great decor, then The Drop Forge is a no-brainer.Also, there are plentiful public parking outside the Drop Forge and free Wifi. Can't wait to come back here again.Highly recommended.

We went to the Jewellery quarter and we called in here for lunch. It is a lovely place, decor is so nice without being pretentious, we had a fish platter to share and it was very tasty and presented nicely, smoked salmon, prawns, fish gougons, calamari and salad, with a nice dip, maybe some bread would have been a nice touch but as I am gluten free it didnt matter to me...........the staff here are lovely, super friendly and nothing too much trouble. Reasonable prices, it is definitely worth seeking out if you are in the area.

I had high hopes of this place after visiting quickly one lunch and it looking busy and inviting. So booked a table with friends for a Friday night. Very disappointing! The place was empty. Absolutely nil atmosphere. We were the only people eating at any table. Food was reasonable but they had no chicken for several of the dishes on the menu. What sort of a restaurant like this runs out of a staple food like chicken early on a busy Friday night. And nobody had the nouse to quickly fetch any from the local express either. Service started off well - very attentive for first part of meal and then they lost interest. I think because it was so quiet the staff were just more interested in catching up on their gossip at the bar. And they had no chicken!

(the drop forge in Hockley). The fish I order was over microwave and then into the fryer it was like a house brick the crushed peas & Mint was so dry they had been over microwave as well. I think the cook needs training how to use a microwave. When I complain about the fish see said I will tell the cook but at the end of the night the fish meal was still on the bill. This was our third visit and was disappointing . Its a lovely venue but let down today by poor service and I didn't think the food was as good as normal. We opted for the Roasts. The beef one was nice, but my husband had the pork one and I had the Lamb and we both found the meat very disappointing also the vegetables were bland and limited and the gravy was lacking ! They did bring more on request (eventually)They didn't seem to have it together today I know they had a wedding at the venue the day before because when we arrived they still had signs up saying the place was closed due to a private function.... We had booked so walked in to enquire, they then removed the posters. We arrived for a 1.30 booking and no one else was in so they may have lost some customers due to that. Desert was hit and miss, husbands ice cream turned up and my daughters and mine turned up but it wasn't what we ordered. (They did apologies) but hubby had to eat all of his as it was melting and had finished his before ours arrived. Again disappointing . It was Fathers Day as well and not a token drink on offer for all the Dads in there, made the day a bit of an overall let down... Shame

Service was great sorry cannot remember her name who served us tonight but she was great very welcoming and put herself out making sure the food was served in the garden. She was lovely. Food was good, would recommend the sweet potato chips. The tapas was delicious. Good price 3 for £10. Came back for seconds, as it was tasty plus as we were a large crowd. The lads really enjoyed the food. The night went so well we were the last to leave before lock up. There was a big birthday party down stairs this didn't spoil our night. With kids running around the staff handled it well. Come here for a meal you won't be disappointed. Disabled toilet is well laid out and very clean. Enough room for my assistance dog to stare at me as I work. Lighting is good but unobtrusive. Prices are about average. Myself and 7 other family members had a meal and drinks on Saturday afternoon (02/04/2016). The food was excellent and decent portions, the beer was of a great standard (as per usual) and the service was top notch. After our waiter had been (very) patience with our party (it had been a long time since we all had seen each, so a good chinwag was in order) he took our order and our starters arrived 15 minutes (20 minutes max) afterwards. After we finished our starters, our main course follow shortly afterwards. I had Battered fish and (chunky) chips. It was a decent sized portion and the chips were stunning. We were left to digest our main for a while before we were asked if we fancied a dessert. I (and a number of our party) had the chocolate brownie and ice cream, which I can highly recommend. After we had finish our meal we were not rushed to clear the table. The restaurant is pleasant and it was easy to park on Sunday as businesses are quiet. It was hard to estimate the number of guests as we were seated in a lower area. A pleasant hostess did her best bit it was apparent to the party that the place lacked a lot of management skill and oversight. Service was slow, food was nice and price friendly. It was a Mother's Day special menu but nothing special offered to any mothers and we had four in our party. An acknowledgement to moms even would have been nice. We sat at two and left at five thirty which is alarmingly slow. We had been at our table 20 mins before our previously ordered bar drinks arrived. We were seated 1 hour before our first items arrived then we waited for 15 minutes longer for some requested bread to appear. It was assumed that a terrine would be served with bread of some sort in fact we had to pay for bread. At the end we had to ask for our bill before our desserts arrived as we had some in the party that had to catch a London train and feared missing it. We were a relaxed party and all in all we enjoyed our lunch more so because it stretched out longer than anticipated and we were with family. If you were wanting to be out in an hour to 90 mins you should make sure you get that message across particularly if you are on metered parking. The place has much promise but didn't deliver hugely today.

Went two weeks ago for a friends birthday meal. Having previously had a poor experience here a while back, i wasn't overjoyed at the prospect, but hey - it wasn't my party.I could go on, but the basics are that i ordered a lamb pie and mash, assuming this to be the safest of choices. I was wrong. When it arrived, the mash was cold. I don't mean a 'waiting under the hot lamp so it's gone cool' kind of cold, i wish, but no, it was a 'taken straight from the fridge and placed on a plate, and then forget to microwave it' kind of cold. I called the waitress over who apologised and said she would take it back to the chef. It returned five minutes later (with the portion of mash seemingly halved in size, perhaps a result of having heat applied to it) but at least it was warm. Moving on from the 'who knows how long the mash had been in the fridge for' potato-gate, I lifted the shop brought puff pastry lid off the pie to dig out a piece of lamb. What i found when i bit down was a lump of pure gristle. Not just any gristle though, it had also turned luke-warm which i assumed at this stage was as a result of the chef's unfamiliarity with the concept of applying heat to food/heat escaping food whilst busy applying heat to food originally served cold. Anyway, I sent it back, and told the waitress I did not expect to see it on the bill.I then proceeded to wait for 20 minutes for the drink that i'd already asked for twice (and was charged for - nice touch drop forge management) which has understandably cemented the fact that I will never, regardless of the occasion, put foot in this place again.

We came here on a recommendation from a friend as we were shopping in the jewellery quarter. The building is amazing very industrial with fairy lights! It would make a fab wedding venue, or big party location. The service was pleasant if a little ditzy (they sometimes seemed a little unsure). We found a great little cosy corner to sit in with benches and cushions, but there are proper tables if you prefer. The food choices are reasonable with a few vegetarian ones. If you go on the weekend the only option is the set menu so you are forced to spend a minimum of £20 on two courses. The breaded goat's cheese is REALLY yummy. I had the curry as my main, it was nice. Was it worth the price - probably not, but it was good food.I'd go again for the location and the fact that the food is nice and not just chain restaurant reheated rubbish. What would make it better...a cocktail list!! As if they don't have one here #fail

As it was lunch time we only wanted sandwiches, though the larger meals on the menu sounded delicious. I didn't even have a Trip Advisor account before but after visiting The Drop Forge I felt like sharing my experience. After seeing quite a few positive reviews about this place I am wondering how it is possible.... Even two stars seems excessive to me... First of all building is nice, a bit dirty inside but not the worst I've seen, this is the only positive thing about this place. Everything else is just a disaster: food, drinks, staff, prices... I won't go in much details but believe me you won't enjoy your time spent here... As we were sat in a main dining area( a raised bit by the windows) we were very close to other diners and heard a few people complaining to the member of staff( a rude girl with greasy, curly hair and dirty apron)... We even didn't bother to address our complains as we wouldn't know where to start... Food was cold and tastes, cask beer was obviously out of date, waitress was rude and very impatient and everything cost us just under £100... Avoid and better get a take away, your taste buds will thank you.

First time coming here for a meal since a change of chef after Tom leaving.Have to say I felt it was a little disappointing with the kitchen under Tom hands the food was excellent on the high end for the Jewellery Quarter and would recommend coming here. Little confused what the target audience they're trying to attract, is it restaurant or a pub. The sitting arrangements as a whole is set out to be a restaurant with insufficient cozy sitting for that pint and a chat. The menu is the usual pub menu burgers, fish & chips & steaks. Prices at the high end for pub food nothing unusual. We all had the shared starter, plenty to go around then we moved onto our mains each having something different. The burger I was informed was lovely & I had the duck steak served warm/cool not the best, with great crispy chips & veg. The rest of the meals were enjoyable. The garden is up stairs with nice garden furniture perfect for the summer sitting along with dinning area over looking down stairs dining area. The Drop Forge is less than five minutes away from the railway station. I recently ate here with with a group of 10 and we all thoroughly enjoyed the night! We arrived for our table at 8pm as we had booked, however the table wasn't quite ready but we were more than happy to hang around by the bar and have a couple of drinks while we waited. We had pre-ordered our food so it wasn't too long after we sat before we received the tapas style starters. We were given a variety of dishes which were the perfect amount given the size of our group and all very nice. Our mains then followed not long after and everyone at the table was thrilled with the quality of the food.I had the Roast Duck Breast, Duck fat potato, maple parsnip and plum jus which was absolutely delicious and the accompanying veg was also delicious. For dessert I then had the Dark Chocolate and salted caramel pot de creme and pistachio ice cream which was an ideal end to the meal. For £27.50 per person for the 3 courses, I thought this was a more than fair price given the quality of the food. The service was really good on the night and we found all of the staff really nice and helpful. To find the restaurant from the Jewellery Quarter station, you just walk across the zebra crossing by the entrance, walk right and then take the first left. The restaurant is then immediately on your left hand side.Overall, we all really enjoyed our night at The Drop Forge and I will definitely plan to return in the future. The place has a lot of character which comes from its old use as a stamp factory and it was quite strange being here considering only a few years ago it was a nightclub.Great place!

We had our wedding reception at the drop forge on the 5th of December and cannot say enough good things about our day.Dan at the drop forge was fantastic from the point of booking to the execution of the day itself. Time was taken with us at every point to discuss each individual aspect. On the day itself the venue was decorated beautifully exactly as we specified. The aesthetic element far exceeded expectations. The staff were attentive and couldn't do enough for us and our guests whilst maintaining some discreetness. We barely noticed the room turnaround taking place for the beginning of the evening reception. The staff at the drop forge liaised with our other vendors (flowers, dj, photographer etc) so well that it made the organisation of the day much easier for ourselves and the wedding party. The food was of a very high standard. In particular the slow cooked roast beef was perfect prepared. Many of our guests have commented on the quality of the food. The best thing about this venue are the people that work there and Dan himself. Dan could not have been more accommodating; his genuine aptitude for organising events and desire to make people happy with the service they receive is what makes the drop forge so unique. Thanks to everyone involved! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend and I'm sure our 100 guests would agree.

I really like this place. Friendly staff and lovely food. My only 'bug bite' is the portion sizes. When it first opened, they were very generous. The last two times I ate here, the food was great but there wasn't much of it!I am a vegetarian, that doesn't mean I am a rabbit! So when I read 'haloumi' as an ingredient, I expect a 'meat' size portion not a slither which was twisted to look bigger and resembled more of a garnish. Please return to your roots.

The Drop Forge has been well restored , however the selection of food on offer at a retirement party , was quite dreadful, sandwiches with the cheapest home, door step bread, and chips, cannot think a chief worth his salt would make up such revolting fare. Great pity as the decor has been well thought out.

Called in opportunistically for a late lunch with friends after a shopping trip. We all had different meals which were fantastic. I had a salad which contained pear, nuts etc...absolutely amazing. The restaurant was almost empty which is a real shame - with the food quality it deserves to be packed. According to the card I picked up from the bar they also own the Marwood.

The Drop Forge is my favourite place to go in Birmingham. Beautifully decorated with an old industrial vibe, it is very comfortable. There is a good selection of drinks and the foo is always excellent. The snug corners are brilliant for playing board games with friends. A lovely place to spend an afternoon or evening.

My wife and I have visited the Drop Forge several times for lunch and have always found the service, food and drink quality excellent. The atmosphere is always pleasant. The prices are average for a restaurant of this quality. The only slight negative for me is that the menu choice is not very inspiring.

Probably the best place to have lunch in the Jewellery Quarter, a smart pub environment. We thought the service was good and ciabatta's and eggs benedict very good. Restaurant area is slightly separate to the bar and also seating in the bar area. It's the 2nd time we have been and have enjoyed it on both occasions.

Very stylish place for a wedding reception and they did it very well. Canapes served on the roof garden/patio area while the band were playing got it off to a good start. Plenty of good quality tasty food and service with a smile.Special thanks to Dan and his team for help on the previous day getting the chocolate wedding cake finished and storing it safely overnight.

Visted here on 27th August, nice looking place so all got off to a good start. Service was good, and attentive.Food ordered no delays, and not too quick either.Various meals were ordered but my steak was dry, colleagues had the chicken & mushroom pie and they said it was tasty but they had to ask for gravy as side order.Would I go again, yes I would. Althogh its not in the centre of town it is very handy for the train station that is just 30 yards away

I am astonished by the negative reports of a couple of recent reviewers. We had lunch there last Wednesday, and all the staff were charming and helpful – not a trace of "surliness". The food was excellent too, and the ambience very pleasant. The Jewellery Quarter does not seem to have many eating places beyond the café level, and the Drop Forge is a very welcome oasis.

Been before, love the building and the menu, service just shocking this time. No one took our food order until we asked, there was a huge wait although not busy, then for some unknown reason the starters and mains arrive together, staff all more interested in talking to one another than keeping an eye on the tables. Food, when it arrived, was ok. Wouldn't rush back based on this experience.

I attended for the first time at a wedding. The venue is lovely. As the weather was good, we made full use of the cosy roof top garden. The staff were great: very smiley and professional. The foods both day and evening was good qualiity, well presented and plentiful. There was a good choice for vegetarians. A massive thank you to all the staff for making my brother and sister in-laws wedding such a special memorable day. Would strongly recommend.

we went to my nephews wedding in Birmingham and he had is reception at the Drop Forge bar and restaurant . We had introductory drinks in the upper floor of the restaurant which also has an outdoor patio area which as the day was very warm was ideal following drinks we went downstairs for the main meal. For starters we had a selection of tapas style starters with a really nice pasta dish, main course was lamb with a selection of veg and a lovely potato dish pud was a lovely chocolate sponge with cream the service was slick from the very pleasant staff and most importantly thry kept the drink flowing. Allin all a great day ,and a great meal well done th Drop Forge

When I dine out, I want to smell the food and NOT overbearing lillies! Our drinks were left at the counter for 15 minutes. The drinks server (she is not a bar maid I heard her tell one customer!) just left them while the only waitress had to serve four tables. One table waited so long, they left to go elsewhere. I wish I had followed. I explained that we were in a hurry as my colleague had to catch a train and roughly how long would it take for our meal? She was so rude (I don't know her name but I think she was French?) started arguing that we were not the only people in and we had to wait our turn! I had never been spoken to like that before. I was grateful that we didn't have to wait very long (only 10 minutes) but I did not enjoy my food after being treated like that.

I had been walking the Pugin Trail with a group of friends, one of whom suggested this place for lunch. It was a superb choice. It was a lovely day so we sat on the sun terrace. The service was good, if a bit slow (although good food does not come quickly). The food and drinks could not be faulted and I was pleased to find some good real ale available.

We stumbled across this place whilst on the Birmingham Owl Trail. It is a beautifully designed place which manages to be light and open, but in other parts warm and cosy at the same time. Bar service was prompt and friendly. Because we were only passing through we just stopped for drinks on the open terrace on what was a beautifully warm and sunny Sunday (and in Birmingham, too!). A glass of cold Peroni on tap was just the thing to quench our thirst. This was an accidental find, but one that we will definitely return to.

Went for pre birthday dinner drinks here, and gave ended up here for drinks a couple of times in Friday nights. Always somewhere to sit, especially in all the little nooks and crannies filled with cosy benches and cushions. Service is prompt, the atmosphere perfect for talking with friends. One of the best places for a drink in the Jewellery quarter. I especially like that I feel as welcome dressed up in party wear or dressed down in mid shopping mode.

Went here on a Saturday with some friends, it was relatively quiet so I'm not sure why the service was so poor, we got given menus for food, as soon as we ordered our drinks the waitress took the menus away, we had to wait 15 minutes for our drinks, only then could we ask for the menus to order our food.... When we did we waited best part of an hour for it to come, I ordered the fish and chips, the fish was nice but despite the wait the chips were hard and not cooked properly, all in we probably spent 2 hours in there having some food and 1 drink. I was sick later on that evening, other than some toast for breakfast that was the only food I had eaten all day so I am convinced it was what made me sick...will not be returning.

Dan and the team did a wonderful job for my daughters wedding reception. The food was amazing. the transformation of the place was incredible. The efficiency of the staff in converting the dining space to a dance floor was like a military operation and was done so that it did not intrude. The staff made sure the bride and groom were well looked after. Thanks Dan and the team.

This is a light and airy venue with young, welcoming staff. This was my second visit- the first had been at lunchtime in the middle of shopping in the Quarter, and the second at the end of the day. The conversion of a workshop means the thick walls keep the heat out, providing welcome shade. Seating is casual downstairs, with more formal tables upstairs. Details such as twinkly lights, aid the atmosphere once the sun goes down. We had the tapas menu which was 'surprisingly filling' as my husband remarked, positively. A good place to stop off and refuel, however, the shops close at 5pm and if you I are wanting to stay in the Quarter in an attempt to miss the worst of the motorway traffic, be aware that the Drop Forge closes between 4.30pm and 5.30pm.

We dropped in for lunch whilst visiting the jewellery quarter last week, The bar and restaurant is really smart with different areas for intimate drinks or some thing to eat with a crowd of people. The food was really good my fiancée had the fish whilst I had the burger ( probably the best I have had since returning to Birmingham)The staff were friendly and very helpful we finished our meal and had a drink in the roof top garden .What a wonderful find ! I would have no hesitating in recommending this bar and restaurant

I had read some good reviews online and The Drop Forge did meet the expectations. The atmosphere is great either inside or outside, cosy and trendy and you feel very comfortable once you arrive. The menu has a very good range of speciliaties and they also offer a daily menu (at least at lunch time). We tried a starter (an amazing hummus) and main plates and everything had a good presentation, the portion was good and they were very tasty.I can't forget that the staff was very nice and helpful all the time.Highly recommended and I will definitely go again.

We went here for lunch whilst visiting the Jewellery Quarter. We were welcomed and asked if we wanted to eat and we choose the top floor seating area. A metal spiral staircase took us to the top of what I assume was once a warehouse of some sort.We choose Fish and Chips which were really good, a lovely large fluffy white piece of Cod, nice chips all served with a large slice of lemon and Tartar sauce. Great service, lovely people in a great environment.

My partner and I visited this restaurant last weekend. We both said how lovely it was inside and on the roof terrace. We ordered a 3 course meal, from a very friendly waitress who looked after us for the duration of our meal.We ordered mackerel pate and hummus and flat bread starters, it was nice but not WOW.Our main was sirloin steak and duck breast, i have to say both were beautiful, and for desert we had berry crumble and ice cream, this was also yummy. Our bill came to £69 this did include a large glass of wine and a pint of beer.I think this venue, is quirky and different ,well worth a visit.

Really nice building. Good beer and friendly service. The menu did't really inspire so I just ordered a burger. Food however was just ok: not bad but not amazing. It's certainly not as good as it was 3 or 4 years ago. Would definitely pop back for a beer but there are so many choices in Bham door food I'd go elsewhere for a meal.

Went here after it was recommended to us. Whilst browsing in the jewellery quarter, we went for Sunday lunch. We arrived and were one of the first for lunch. The building and decor is unique and I could imagine social drinks here to be good. However, I wasn't impressed with the food or service. Service was slow considering we were one of the first to arrive for lunch. I had fish and chips for lunch and my friends had roasts. The chips were double fried, too crunchy and oily. And the roast was a bit on the salty side (the gravy?), there was mash as wells as roast potatoes (odd?). We didn't realise that there was more veg to come which came halfway through our meal.Don't expect to be wowed by this place, it doesn't stand out as a food establishment and I'm unlikely to go again.

We thought we we would check out the Jewellery Quarter and asked our taxi driver to recommend somewhere for lunch. He made a good choice. The name gives a clue that this is a converted industrial premises so expect plenty of exposed brick. It is a bright and airy space largely staffed by young people. The menu is quirky but interesting. We began by sharing a baked camembert that was listed as "tapas". It was served with lightly toasted French bread. Excellent but quite substantial. We continued with flatbreads (smoked salmon; chorizo and chimmichurri) and a side order of sweet potato chips (fries if you prefer). Also pretty good, but we had no room for pudding. There was a good range of beers and my wife enjoyed her white wine. She might even have had another one. Service was friendly and efficient. We spent £50 including a tip but probably ate too much. No complaints about value for money.

Went for a treat with my partnet and shared a few tapas plates. The prawns and chorizo were faves but everything was yummy and the venue has some lovely outside space on the roof so will be great in summer time. Not very busy when we visited so were served quickly and staff were pleasant.

They penciled us in for a wedding meal and contacted us on a couple of occasions to sort out finer details. A month or so later, the Manager phoned to say that another couple taken our place for the following reasons: they were bringing more guests; they paid the deposit straight away. Prior to this, we had no idea there was a deadline nor a deposit. Had he asked for a deposit, we'd have paid. We now have no wedding venue. He did however offer us a different date to our wedding date. How helpful! Disgusting, don't go..

I'm reluctant to post this review fearing that I'll be helping driving people to this spot. It is perfect. Cheap, friendly locals, authentic, fresh pints. This is the local English pub experience without any BS. Lovely spot. Old place, lovely staff and locals, wish I ate there. Did I mention that it's cheap? It's not expensive at all.

Beautiful period surroundings , let down by low standards of everything else ! Coffee's were not sufficiently hot enough , & on complaining a waitress seemed somewhat puzzled as to how best to remedy the situation ! The food offerings faired worse , after ordering 'fish-finger' sandwiches , we were dismayed to find , the fish-finger ultra slim (approx 1/4 inch) with a 'dark' filling , on canteen style bread (pre-packed sliced ) , a reasonably tasty salad & tartare sauce accompanied ! I presented these facts to 'the manager' , he laughed & said , well you have eaten it all ! I replied I didn't say it was inedible , but very sub-standard, after trying to appease with 'cakes' I accepted a 50% reduction ! All in all our worst dining experience !
