We visited on a Saturday afternoon in May. It was pretty busy as was the whole of birmingham to be fair. The bar was packed with people queueing. We managed to find a queue to wait in to get to the bar, but after about 20 minutes and only moving up 1 space we gave up, and left as did other customers. The staff on the bar seemed to be going particularly slow getting drinks and just walking off leaving people waiting. Shame. Place looks nice but didn't get to have a positive experience on our visit.

Ordered the flat iron steak. I thought it was quite expensive at £17 odd but fancied giving it a try. We were very surprised when it came out. It was the smallest meal I think I've ever had in my life. Almost like they had cut the meal in half. Where on earth was the rest of the steak? I thought they had mistakenly given me a kids meal but apparently not! Utter rip off for that price as well. Shame really as the staff were quite friendly, although nobody came to ask how the food was. Do not order the steak. Utterly baffling.

Disappointing to say the least. We've eaten here before, and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, this time was a "never again". Firstly, the menu is very limited, uninteresting and expensive for what it is. Young lady behind the bar who served us was disinterested. We decided on the BBQ chicken, but they only had 1 left! So I had the flat iron steak, which I ordered pink. Also asked for the tomatoes on both meals to be swapped for peas. When meals came out, to be fair, they were both hot, as they should be. However, only one had peas, the other still had the tomatoes. The chicken was overcooked and dry, the steak was much nearer well done than pink. No-one bothered to come and check our food was OK. We did look at desserts. But with a very uninspiring choice of 3 relatively expensive options, after the disappointment of the main course we decided not to bother. Probably explains why the place was so deserted compared to other similar establishments in the area.

New management??? We’ve been here for the past 3 years after our annual trip to the sea life centre. We’ve been back because it’s usually good food… when ordering the ironed steak (£18) for my lad we were asked if we wanted it pink or well done, we asked for pink, it was that well done that it was dry and chewy, the bacon cheese burger (£16) was also that overcooked that it was dry and snapped when eating it, the mac and cheese (£14) that my daughter ordered was incredibly bland and had the consistency of rice pudding, the pasta just dissolved as it hit her mouth. My Mrs ordered chips…. They were alright. As we were leaving an elderly couple asked how are food was having left most of their fish and chips because it wasn’t nice, All the dishes were that bad that we won’t be returning next year! The location is spot on! Prime location for hot days by the canal however the outdoor furniture needs replacing. Every table rocks and has layers of sticky stuff on. In the last year it’s dropped so much in standards.

We held a 40th birthday party in the upstairs area of the Malt House yesterday and it was absolutely brilliant. The Malt House team had set up the area perfectly, clearing an area for ballon arch and numbers, putting up photos running along the whole of the upstairs and they had provided some bonus birthday photo props so it was all set up and ready for us on arrival. Everyone commented on how delicious the food was and there was plenty to go around so really good portion sizes. Special thanks to Reena who was quick to respond to all of my emails and helped organise the day with me. I am not sure if this is a regular thing but this was an event thing. We arrived pretty early before it got super busy. We placed 2 ordered to our table on the app. First off on the food menu if something was blocked off then it was out of stock but they didn't do that to the drinks menu, so when something was out of stock the person who came over explained and I changed it but she was so rude about it! Her attitude was awful! Food wise, as I said 2 orders were placed. I had the mac and cheese and my sister had the tapas (this was one order). The mac and cheese was 100% out of a can with little extra cheese added to it. It was small and awful for the price. My sisters tapas was worse! Half was cold and the main thing, the halloumi was cooked either with fish batter or in the same oil. So much so, my sister was convinced she ate a fish goujon. I asked them to check and they said it wasn't. I'm a vegetarian and did not feel safe eating that halloumi!!! When they delivered the first lot of food they said we will be back with your other bit in a moment. 20 minutes later my sister and I had finished and we had to ask someone. My niece ordered the kids pasta and she couldn't eat it. The pasta had clearly been sitting in warm water and it was soggy and over cooked. She did get complimentary ice cream though. The burger my SIL had was fine. Although the best thing was the chips. Wouldn't go again!

I was very disappointed by the food and the time in which it was served. We'd booked a table, and when ordering food, we were told there was a 45-minute wait. We ordered 4 steak sandwiches off the lunchtime menu. We were told that they had sold out of that, but when I said that's what we were going to order, the member of staff went to check and said it was possible (nice, helpful barman). The food took well over an hour to arrive and it was pretty awful when it did. The steak was very chewy despite us choosing it to be cooked 'pink' when asked and there wasn't much of it on the sandwiches. The mustard mayo was so overpowering, it was almost inedible. I'd booked so that we had plenty of time to do other things, but ended up wasting over 2 hours here. It's a big pub, and they were busy. I appreciate that, but there was definitely not enough staff on and things need to improve. It's in a lovely location, shame things weren't working well that day.

On a recent short City Break to Birmingham, we booked a table for our evening meal at The Malt House. From the outside the building is very attractive, and inside is also very nice. From the reviews we had read we were expecting a better experience than turned out to be the case. We had booked a specific time and when we arrived were shown to our table at once. We were then told there would be a wait of approximately 45 minutes to get our meal. This was a real surprise and we wondered if we would be asked to leave before our food arrived if another group had booked our table for later the same evening. The food arrived after about 30 minutes which was not too bad. We had both ordered Steak & Ale pies, and had been looking forward to them all day. However, when the meals arrived we were very disappointed. I had ordered mashed potato with mine and my partner asked for chips. The chips, the peas and the gravy on both plates were cold. The pies were hot but once opened, contained very little meat, a lot of gristle and a great deal of air. I did eat mine, although I found the taste rather bland overall, but my partner found hers inedible and left almost the whole pie. We noticed a party of four people at the table next to us, two of whom had also ordered the pies, and both expressed their disappointment with the taste and also left the pies almost untouched. It was St Patrick's Day that day, so it is possible the staff were very busy, although the restaurant did not appear crowded, and perhaps we should make allowances, but we have to speak as we found and we were not at all impressed with the food at The Malt House and will not return in the future.

Impressive looking building, situated right on the canal. The pub has a good beer selection. Food was perfectly acceptable. Nothing amazing, standard chain pub grub, but tasty enough. Biggest downfall for us was the heating, or lack of it. We'd met with friends and were on a bit of a session day. We had planned for more drinks after our meal, but decided to move on as we were all freezing. We'd have happily bedded in for the afternoon if we'd been warm. Probably a sign of the times.

This place is absolutely amazing. Five of us went to celebrate my 50th birthday. The food was exquisite of a very high quality. Our servers were attentive. Our every need was met. We were not rushed,
