This place has had a revamp.The decor is stunning, the new seating is so homely and comfortable. The food…wow, just incredible. I’ve been eating here on and off for several years. Several years ago this place was right up there as far as a curry in Sussex will give you. I’m happy to say that the food tonight was exceptional, incredible even. The Downsman has got its mojo back.

My word what has happened to this place???I don't eat a lot, but portions were small, my meal certainly wasn't what it said it was, music was way to loud, everyone was shouting to be heard & on top of that noise the TV's were also on. It's a shame the food used to be brilliant, certainly won't be going here again .

Got a food delivery from The Downsman last night. The food was delicious! Just the right level of spice and the garlic nann was super tasty! The food arrived in under 40 mins and was piping hot!

We had a takeout, food brilliant, chicken biryani and husbands balti was great. Food arrived warm and on time. First time we used this indian.

Well, if you like burn your face off samosas, super hot curry or a huge amount of garlic with your noodles the this is the place for you. Personally, this is the second time we have tried the downsman and I have to be honest. There are better Indian restaurants out there. Avoid

I visited this place in April 2018 and food was ok,so I thought let’s give it a try again with my mates on Saturday..Biriyani excellent well done..Lamb Bhuna poor same rating as 2018 lamb stew in curry sauce..Chicken madras absolutely awful..Let’s move on..Kababs excellent and tasty ..Naan brilliant..Chicken tikka very good..This pace failed the curry test,Bbq dish were good..But curry well disappointed with the way they were made stew in curry sauce..Price bit expensive for the quality of food..So my 2018 visit wasn’t a great experience and 2022 is no better..Apologies for the honest feedback..

I ordered a selection of food on sat 2nd jan as it was my birthday . One of the meals I ordered was the burger fries and slaw all the food was delicious and piping hot when delivered the only thing was the slaw was missing was disappointed but but like I said the rest of the food was amazing will defo use the downsman again .

Disappointed . Standard has dropped. Over priced, small portion,missed items and no longer supply the side dish. Won’t order again I’m afraid .

We ate at The Downsman this week. I have to say the staff were brilliant, they took our temperatures when we entered and took contact details. They then advised us how the layout of the venue worked and also the one way system and they system they use for the toilets. A very detailed welcome and we felt safe in the venue. We sat ourselves, it wasn't that busy and they were happy for us to do so. We then had a little bit of a wait to order, they weren't too busy, just seemed to be waiting on food from the kitchen. What they don't tell you (not when I called to book a table, not when we arrived nor when we placed the order) is that your food arrives in a take out bag, you are given wooden cutlery and styrofoam plates to eat your dinner with. Had we not seen a table have the same experience when they received their food we would have been very confused! To be honest I see why they do this, however a bit of a heads up would have been nice, even the option to take my own (which you can do with glasses) which I would happily have done! There was a bit of a wait between courses, by the time the food came we didn't really mind using the disposable utensils as we were quite hungry. The food was good, piping hot and tasty, although then menu has changed in the past year with old favorites no longer available on the menu. When finished we simply put all waste in the bag it came in and put it in the large bin close to the toilets.Overall I was happy with the food and the venue and I'd happily go again. However as mentioned previously a heads up on the cutlery and crockery situation would have been appreciated.

A work colleague suggested we ate here rather than the normal high street curry houses. It was fab. Nice to be able to enjoy real ale with great Indian food and sports on the tv - we really enjoyed the night and all reasonably priced too.Staff friendly.This will now be a regular for me when I come to Crawley !

A good pub to watch sports with friends, they have great Indian food and fairly priced as well. Highly recommend the place.

Visited this pub with my customers who recommended the food. From the outside, I thought we were just visiting a normal neighbourhood pub, however was very wrong when we walked inside. For a Thursday night it was very busy. Warmly greeted by the staff who set up a tab for me, took our drinks order and then gave is the menu to look over. They dont do table service which is not an issue at all. The menu is loaded with great starters/bar snacks etc in addition to great mains. Very simple and traditional curry dishes aswell as a great tandoori menu and chef specials. Speed of service was faultless and the food was fantastic. If you are in Crawley, be sure to search for this hidden gem.

My family and I have just had a delivery from you and I have to say that it was appalling, everything that arrived was so Spicey hot and the food was so cold, the madras we ordered only had 3 pieces of chicken in it and the goat Biryani was mainly bones. We used to eat at the Downman on a regular basis, at least once a week and I have to say that the quality has really dropped, we will not be coming back either personally or delivery until things improve, another £45 wasted......We had a delivery from you a couple of weeks ago which was not great which we thought was unusual as we have never had a bad meal with you in the past, so disappointing that quality has deteriorated so quickly.Same comments will be uploaded to trip advisor as we are so disappointed.Very sad......

Been to this pub many times as the Indian food is usually great but unfortunately last night could be our last night!! They have introduced a new menu which started last night and none of the staff seem to know what’s going on! They were actually printing off A4 copies of the menu as customers asked to see a menu!The evening started with me asking the barman for a pint of Kingfisher (Indian beer) and he asked if I wanted a single or a double!! After clarifying that I wanted a pint of beer not a spirit, I then asked him for a pint of coke and a half pint of lager. This little teaser had him totally flummoxed! He asked if I meant half pint coke and a half pint of lager? NO says I, I want a pint of coke with ice and a half pint of lager! It took him a good 30 seconds to figure out it was two separate drinks and he was thinking where could he find a big enough glass to mix a pint of coke with half of lager .The evening continued along the same vein when we tried to order food. The order was written down three times before he got it right.The food turned up after 30 minutes but was immediately sent back as it was all cold .When the meals arrived the second time, they were all hot and very tasty. This was surprising given the Fawlty Towers experience we’d just had at the bar.So the management have clearly screwed up with the introduction of their new menu. There has obviously been no planning and no staff training. We saw several customers complaining directly to the manager. We will wait a few months for this place to either settle down or go out of business before we would consider trying it again.

Recommended by my colleagues, I went to try the food on my second day in Crawley with my colleague and it was a hit. Tasty food and very nice staff.

Had dinner here the other night and although the service was slow(it wasn't busy) when we did get the food it was great.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you. We had a party for my husbands 50th last night. It was such a great night. The staff as always were friendly and allowed me to blue tooth a playlist. The buffet was really good and I’m still enjoying the samosas today.

Came to the Downsman for the first time with my wife and everytjing exceded our expectations. The bartenders Dani and Stacey were very friendly and helped us a great lot in explaining all the available dishes and what they recomended us was exactly spot on! I had the Nawabi Biryani which was the absolute best in town full of flavour and perfectly balanced. My wife had the lambchops which where cooked to perfection. Excelent atmosphere and the beers where nice an cold! Would deffinetly come again!

This is another great find, it’s a British Indian run pub, so great food and great beer, it really is a friendly place to catch up with an old friend, grab a curry and a beer, watch some football at feel safe. It’s one of the best night spots in Crawley, plenty of space inside, 10/10

Came here at the end of last week for a spur of the moment meal out. The service was efficient and the food was quick to arrive. The quality was top notch and we really enjoyed it. Will be back again soon

We have eaten in and had takeaways many times here and we cannot fault the amazing food. We are very selective with where we eat as we like good food cooked well and The Downsman delivers this time and time again. The staff are friendly and efficient and we enjoy the food whether eating in or taking out.

This is a nice pub with a great selection of different draft lagers. The Indian owners do really nice food at a reasonable prices. I’ve eaten here many times over a long period and although the food was of great quality previously, it now suffers with dishes being far hotter than requested and many fried options being served saturated in oil. When questioning this the response is that it’s a fried dish, that’s why.....

2nd time I have eaten here with friends and it gets better and better. Nice relaxed atmosphere with drinks at the bar, game of pool and then sit down with a table for the ten of us.

I have eaten at this restaurant a few times and although it isn't the best Indian food I have ever eaten - the dishes are tasty and it is a good place to go if you're in the Crawley area.

The food is very nice and a good variety too, usually has come out on the little spicier side. service is average not too fast or too slow. the staff are friendly and the bar prices are pretty high for a local pub.

It is a pub but pub that serves only Indian food. And a good one :) Lovely atmosphere inside and outside colourful and interesting crowd. Great many not expensive at all and super good taste. Loved it.

A once thriving establishment now looks tired table and chairs worn abd looks like an explosion from the 2nd world war. the food was disappointingly tasteless with the hot chilli sauce made of tomato puree. Its ashamed because i once spoke highly of this place and will not be visiting anymore.

Came to the place expecting high quality service, first pint served no issues then ignored by several bar stuff involved with changing channels on sky! Finally after 20 minutes got attention, placed my order of food, asked for extras in my dish and charged me for them and didn’t even get them. Rang the pub after arriving home to find half the stuff I asked for was missing, was told the bar staff aren’t trained and have you the wrong information. Well how great? Pub full of untrained staff and poor chefs! I thought I’d give this pub a second chance after charging me twice for a food order over 50 pounds but however have really let me and my family down! I will be going to the greyhound after this awful experience.

Delicious curry with a range of beers on tap including Guinness. Sunny enclosed area with family and yiung children enjoying busy weekend custom. Well worth the 1km walk from Tilgate Park for pub lunch.

I’m really surprised by any negative reviews. I find this such a warm, friendly pub. I’ve just had a chicken balti and it was SO full of flavour, couldn’t stop telling my other half how good it was. I really like this pub, and the staff.

This is a nice pub with a great selection of different draft lagers. The Indian owners also do really nice food at a reasonable price. I eat here fairly often and have never had a bad experience. Obviously there are delays when they are busy, but overall a good pub with good food.

Actually shocked at how bad the service and food was.. no cutlery given until near the end of the meal, I had to eat my meal on a starter plate with a spoon. Two people out of the four were left with no food and waiting 45 minutes while I attempted my spicy corma? my friend had lumps of chicken on an onion bed even though she asked for chicken tikka masala with rice. Absolute waste of money. The greyhound is the best one I’ve tried yet, won’t be eating here again.

Visited a couple of weeks ago in the afternoon and although the bar was busy it didn't take long to be served. Ordered food and drinks and the food was on the table in good time, curries and a compliments were very nice but the popadoms and chutneys were brought at the same time as the mains (I prefer them first) The one good thing is that you can dine any time of the day from lunch until closing time. Will be back soon.

I came here with my other half who has been here several times and really recommended it. She said however the food was dependent on the chef as the owners rotate them with their other restaurants. It was clear to see the good chef wasn't there when we ordered.

Surrounded by groups of loud people, not great for a restaurant-style meal. It’s a sports bar, not a restaurant. The starters took 1 hour to arrive, followed by another hour for the mains. The food was actually quite good and reasonably priced, but it wasn’t enough to make us go back again.

I went in to the pub for a quick bite to eat before going to the cinema. My boyf said this place did a good curry and I was intrigued at the curry's on the menu that I had never heard of before. I ordered a chicken Handi curry and advised that I wasn't great with spices. My boyf had a chicken chilli curry. We also got poppadoms and onion bhaji. The handi curry was so tasty! So good that I have been googling recipes to try and make it myself. I had some of my boyfriends curry and it was a bit too spicy for me but still really good. I am moving to Crawley in the new year and we will definitely be coming here more often. The pub itself seems nice, had a couple of pool tables so will be back when I have moved. Friendly staff too

Visited this bar on a Saturday night for dinner during Manchester U vs Arsenal game and it was pack. Understandably it was busy and you need to call the attention of the servers to be served. They have good selections of draft beer and other bar drinks. They have good selection of Indian-fused food if you're into spicy dining mood. I tried their Tikka Lamb Biryani and it was good. The crowd seemed to be friendly.

Visited on a Tuesday evening for a social evening with friends. Service at the bar was slow, although prices were quite reasonable.

Came in the other night for a curry with friends, (the pub was not busy) waited 50 minutes for any food to arrive, the junglie (sorry for spelling) was under cooked, the chicken shashnic (again sorry for spelling) was so spicy hot that I could not eat it (it never normally is) and when I told a member of staff he just said 'oh well I will tell the chef' I have eaten in the pub on a regular basis and have to say that the quality of the food and service has gone downhill, you used to be one of the best places for a curry, now I think that an Asda take away is better and you get more as well. I have to say I am not the only one who feels the pub has gone down hill dramatically, please please get it back to where it was. A few months ago I would have given the service and the food 9/10, now you would be lucky to get 2/10

We have been coming here for years. The ambiance is typical pub-with-sports-screens. We have had food here when key football matches have been on and it is packed and full of life. Quiet? Nope. Energetic? Yep. We have had many take-aways and have also eaten in. The curries are very high quality, delicately seasoned, beautifully made, varied flavours and excellent quality. If you are eating in the restaurant the tikka arrives sizzling on the skillet - it tastes amazing!I cannot recommend the Downsman highly enough.

A group of 6 visited on a Sunday evening,a table next to us with 7/8 people on it were singing and being very loud,we as a group could not have a conversation because of the noise coming from them,the staff walked passed the table many times,nothing was said.We are regular customers to the downsman,and only recently the pubbut it's prices up 25% ,which to be fair with the food they serve we are happy to pay.However ,the price increase now puts their prices in line with most high street restaurant,i have never been to a restaurant and experienced the behaviour of other customers that I did on our vist,also if we are to pay restaurant prices it would be nice to be served at the table and not have to order at the bar.we left and ate elsewhere.Finally I did message direct the downsman the next day ,but no reply.Shame the standards have lowered,and the price has risen.

Best Indian in Crawley. Hands Down. Great pub with great staff and the food is incredible to boot. I've had the opportunity to try many of their curry dishes now and each of them tastes unique. Very authentic. Cheap drinks is always a plus as well. Worth the walk to check this place out!

We have being going to the Downsman for some time.The food has always been good.Recently they have change the chef and the food has gone from good to excellent.Being a very enthusiastic cook myself, my wife and I had stopped eating out as it has been continually disappointing. The Downsman is one of our exceptions and we go there regularly.The pub can get busy and it is not the place for a romantic meal, but for great quality authentic Indian food, it is one of the best in the area.

As unlikely as it seems, this fairly average looking pub in Southgate does a great curry. It's quite a nice pub, nothing extraordinary, but well worth a trip for the food.

Any football fans attending Crawley Town, make the 10 minute walk from the ground to this place. Had their superb Lamb (falling-off-the-bone) Handi curry with mushroom rice before recent Pompey match. Meat tender and full of flavour. Good array of beers, swift service and very welcoming. Doubt you'll be disappointed.

Been here regular for drinks but never tried the food, I have now and it is fantastic. It is one of the best Indian places to eat in Crawley, try it you won't be disappointed!

I just love this place ! You feel like having Indian food but also want the Pub feel, well this is the place to go. The food is amazing and the prices are very reasonable. I always have the Hara Pyaze Ka Murgh and those who like a very spicy challenge, the Chicken Nepal Kalio is very good yet very hot.. you'll need a pint with that. The staff is friendly and if you are not sure what to order, just ask and they will gladly recommend dishes. I highly recommend this place. Worth a visit.

I have used this pub for years and it's great for Indian curry meals, watching sporting events and some good traditional bands at certain times. A very welcome pub of all ages and very safe to bring families!

I piatti sono ottimi e veramente tipici, questo è dimostrato dal fatto che è frequentato da moltissimi indiani.E' possibile chiedere una riduzione delle spezie.Il personale è gentile e disponibile. Le ordinazioni si fanno al bancone i cibi vengono poi portati al tavolo.Interessanti gli antipasti che risultano diversi dalla maggior parte serviti nei ristoranti indiani.

Me and my husband have been to the downsman most weekends and always have great food and the owner and staff are very welcoming.

We've eaten at The Downsman on several occasions and have never been disappointed! Wonderful variety of dishes, casual, informal surroundings and, even when we've not been able to grab a table (always best to book as it can get very busy!), the takeaway option is just as good when you get it home. No hesitation in recommending The Downsman for a 'proper' curry. Give them a call now and take your appetite and friends there soon!

This pub is great for lots of reasons. Great curry for a nice meal (for instance on a weekday). Great live music for a dance and sing-along (for instance on a Friday night). Great terrace area for a drink in the sunshine (for instance on a Sunday afternoon). There's pool tables, football on the telly, plenty of seating and it's easy to get to by various busses.

Found the Downsman of a very poor standard. The bar staff didn't smile. The space allocated was an hour late setting up. The food cost £150 but only a small came out.

Recently went with friends for dinner and a few drinks. Food was excellent. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Excellent service. Will definitely be back soon

Not only is the Downsman a great pub with good beer and a great drinks selection, the staff are always happy and friendly. The Indian food puts many Indian restaurants to shame with taste and quality and prices that are real value for money. My choice every time

My family eat Indian food but I don't so planned to have burger and chips which I've had before . I was told they don't do English food any more . This meant I had to sit and watch my family eat while I was very hungry . I was very disappointed and I won't be using the pub again unless they bring back the English menu after all not everyone likes curry .

Went out for an Indian as this place was recommended by a friend, got to say the food was very good.The food was well served, good portions and very tasty. Mind you was surprised as the pub was packed, it was a Wednesday night !! Very noisy in the pub as there were groups of people all over the pub, football was on the TV and lots of people playing snooker. .

Planned a Saturday night dinner with my husband and our little one. Called the pub at 7.00 and reserved the table for 3 at 7.30 . Reached the pub with so much excitement as it was a special nite for us . Was shocked to hear when the person at the bar tells us no reservations where made . I even tried to tell him the time and the name I gave out on the telephone. We were just not heard , he asks us to pick any table that was not reserved . All the tables were full , except one table near the bar area which was dirty . My daughter and I had to sit there , while my husband kept waiting to ask someone if they can handover the menu . Nobody would even answer us . We had to leave the pub angry , hungry and upset .my daughter was in tears . It was suppose to be a special evening which was completely ruined . I would never recommend anyone to visit the pub .terrible customer service

I think the new and improved Downsman was the last Indian in Crawley that I hadn't tried. Zari was the current king of curries and it was going to take something special to beat that.I ordered last night (a Sunday evening) and OMG amazing. The new king has arrived! The food was so flavoursome and huge portions too. I think it was the first time I have not finished a naan bread!The best thing about you guys is that you deliver - prepare for an increase in revenue as I'll be on the phone everyday! :D

This place used to be good. However, the owner appears to have set up elsewhere and left someone else in charge. This place is always busy but maybe for the wrong reasons. I won't be going back.

Nice pub plenty of space to move about in, the food is amazing proper Indian food, nice big TVs to watch sport on, staff are very friendly.

Visited the pub/restaurant with family and friends due to a stag do, mixture of ages. We all ordered, food came out except one dish. When the waiter was informed of the missing dish he denied it was ever ordered and spoke to the 65 year old customer with an appalling attitude, this was pointed out to him politely and he continued to be rude accusing the person that spoke to him if bring drunk (wasn't but had a drink as was in a pub and on a stag do!) In the end everyone shared the dishes so the dish missed was no longer required, the waiter informed. Then the waiter proceeded to come out with two of the missing dish and told us 'they will be added to your bill'!!!! The manager came over who told us that she was being blamed, this again was disappointing as do not need to know this when trying to relax with a meal.The food was good overall but the experienced let down by the service. All that would have been required was an 'I'm sorry, we will get the dish sorted out for you as soon as possible' then the experience would have been entirely different.

Had a Indian takeaway from The Downsman. Food was good. However we had a item missing. Had to call the pub back to get it delivered. The delivery driver was apologetic and came over quick after making the call. In all it was good. Worth to giving it a try.

Came here to enjoy a friends sons 18th birthday, had a couple of dishes left over and asked if we could have them taken in a doggy bag, empty containers and plastic bag given to us told we have to do it ourselves, told there a pub not a restaurant and they don't have time for that kind of stuff. Poor service, none of the food came out together, cold, and very bad attitude from staff and owner, don't think il ever be coming to place again, save yourself the trouble people, go to a proper place for food and service with staff and owners that actually care about there customers!!!!

Best Indian in Crawley, that is all that needs to be said.

We were recommended this unlikely venue for an authentic Indian curry by a local cash and carry and they were spot on ! Definitely the best curry we have tasted out of London , ie Tooting or Norbury and a real change from the westernised rubbish served at most curry houses. The food was tasty and the portion size good and there was a great selection on the menu. We went for a weekday lunch and it was pleasantly quiet with no football but I can imagine it would be noisy at times . The ambiance is so/so but the food and the friendly and helpful staff certainly make up for this . We will be visiting again , next time to get a take - away which they also do , even though it is a 35 minute drive from our home as nothing compares in the East Grinstead , Edenbridge and Tunbridge Wells areas.

I must say this is the best curry I've ever eaten I can't recommend this curry dish high enough On the specialty page a thick sauce with a real good kick that of a madras a bit hotter . Mouth tingler few potatoes in it but the flavours are immense my new take away place my new curry loveeeeeed it
