The four of us arrived at 6.30 pm as booked. Drinks were ordered and delivered ok. Then a large group of folk came in, and received immediate attention. We waited over an hour to order our meals, in the meantime, the large group ordered and were served their meals . I complained to the owner, who apologized , but said that the group had pre ordered their meals! Our order then arrived very promptly , but two hours after our arrival. The venue was noisy, and conversation very difficult. Won't be going on a Saturday evening again..big mistake. But the food was excellent to be honest.

Service was very slow & the staff did not know dietary information about the food (e.g. gluten free). Soup seemed to be out of a tin. Main course was very poor. Roast potatos OK but veg. overcooked, bland & likely not salted when cooked. Lamb chops over cooked, tough & dry. No sauc or gravy. Cheese board (that I had to wait for until all the other deserts had beenserved (and eaten!) was nicely presented but the cheese was cold rather than room temp. Coffee was pre-milked, weak and tasted instant. Very unlikely to go again.

The Staff at the Dorset Soldier did us proud!! We choose the Dorset Soldier to host my Father’s Wake on Friday after meetings with Geoff & Sherry. They catered for over 70 guests some traveling as far as Ireland & Scotland. Everyone commented on what a lovely venue & how the staff made us all feel so welcome. They banquet was second to none. They supplied us with delicious foods & endless teas & coffees. All the staff we attentive & friendly. They made such a sad occasion into a warm welcoming environment where we could spend time with friends & family. Geoff had lit the log burner & had some appropriate music playing in the back ground. I would like to recommend this as an excellent venue to host an event where you can be assured of being well looked after. Thank you 🙏 to all the staff & Geoff for being such good hosts.

Met some friends for a catch up & dinner. Had a few drinks first then headed into the dinning area. This is a pub with a small dining area. Decent menu & friendly service. I order the chicken tikka kebabs which was served with rice & salad. Should have gone with my gut instincts when the waitress mentioned that the kebabs couldn't be made gluten free as they are bought in. They were quite tasteless & salad was a bit tired looking. The highlight was the chicken wings(10 for £7.50) which a friend order, they were lovely. Prices were reasonable.

We didn't get to eat here. Very rude staff, no dogs allowed and told so in no uncertain terms so we turned on our heels and went. Looks chocolate boxxy from outside but having read other reviews it's not good on the food either we got off light. Judging by the attitude to disabled people and the high handed approach to a father trying to buy his 18year old autistic son his first pint, I think it's one place to avoid. Appalling treatment of people.

Please ignore poor ratings for this pub. We visited for Sunday lunch - we hadn’t booked but were welcomed and seated straight away. Large choice on the menu. We decided on the roast - me being vegetarian went for the nut roast which I am quite particular about and rarely like pub nut roasts. Our meal was served during a busy time in around 20 minutes. We were both impressed with the food - I devoured my nut roast!! And the roast potatoes were crispy. Loads of gravy too. Fab! Service was good and the atmosphere was great. Spoke with the landlord and passed on my thanks for the only pub nut-roast I have enjoyed. Please try this place for yourselves We will definitely be back. Live music in May sounds great too

Not even worth the one star!! Absolutely disgusting service! Rude unhelpful staff! Went in for a quick drink ordered a sparkling water with a dash of lime! Let me just say firstly I was charged £3.40!! The staff member gave me a small glass to pour my drink, so consequently had half of my bottle left over, so went back over to the bar and asked if they could just put another dash of lime in so I could finish the rest of my drink to my surprise I was charged another 80p!! If I was given a bigger glass in the first place I wouldn’t of needed to ask for more!! Absolute rip off paying £4.20 for a sparkling water with a splash of lime! May as well had some alcohol 🤣

Called in for a quick drink around six on Sunday. I went straight into the beer garden with dog and my 11 year-old greatniece whilst my neice bought drinks. We sat there for maybe fifteen minutes when the landlord brought food out to another customer and shouted to us that dogs weren't allowed. There's no signage saying this, apart from saying, bizarrely, that dogs must be kept on a lead. The rude landlord's "explanation" was that dogs hadn't been allowed for the past three months, as if we were expected to know without being told. I've no problem with pubs not being dog friendly, but please tell people, and explain politely, don't shout across the beer garden like some snotty schoolteacher.

We thought we would give a local pub a try as we were passing, it was very quiet for a Sunday evening, we asked for a kids menu and were told they didn’t have any printed, the server was able to show me what was on the kids menu on a electronic ordering pad which looked like an I-pad so I was surprised they didn’t have any printed kids menus, the service was ok but the quality of the food was really bad, I ordered the pizza which was a premade base with tomato purée and melted cheddar, it tasted really sour and had no flavour to it. My partner had the Sunday roast and apart from the meat you could tell everything else was bought in and cooked from frozen or microwaved, the portion size was generous but it wasn’t fresh food, I took my son outside to look at the kids area and it was really tired and run down, all in all the pub didn’t feel very family friendly and the quality of the food let it down, the food wasn’t bought out together either, sadly this is why I often choose well known chains over a local pub because the quality is often lacking which this clearly proved me to be right.

Went here yesterday for lunch after reading the reviews which said it was good food and value for money, well yes it certainly was good. Met by a lovely young Lady who showed us to a table by a radiator as it was such a cold day, the Restaurant is quite large and felt quite chilly when we first walked in but it had only just opened so maybe not had time to warm up. The Menu was quite varied and I chose the Gammon and asked for a Jacket Potato instead of chips, my Husband ordered the Rump Steak with Chips and it was served with veg and side salad, we started with the soup of the day which was Mushroom, don't think this was homemade but it was delicious and served with a roll and butter. I cannot fault the food it was hot and very fresh, my Husbands Steak was tender and was cooked as he ordered it Medium rare. The price of the Steak was £10.95 and considering an establishment just down the road was charging £22 for a Steak we think this was really good value. A bottle of perfectly drinkable red, 3 soft drinks, a pint of decent beer, 4 starters, 4 mains, a garlic bread, £50. Is there any more to say? OK, so its a Lunchtime Special menu, which means the portions aren't HUGE, but I've got a good appetite, and, with a couple of slices of garlic bread, I was perfectly satisfied. The food is straightforward and well cooked, and yes, as per other reviews, perhaps a brighten up with a re-decorate may be a good idea, but do you mind that much if you can have a more than satisfactory lunchtime for 4 for £50? Well recommended!

The waitress was very careful taking down the order and couldn't have been more helpful. The lasagne was beautiful and I had the best Liver & Bacon ever. I was furious that it was too much for me and I had to leave some. There is plenty of parking and a small children's play area. This place has lovely food, is terrific value for money. Don't hesitate as I did, just go. Certainly now on our list of favourites.

I went here many years ago when family lived in the area, its a cracking pub and really good value, the Sunday Roasts are awesome and the food is really nicely cooked. Staff are friendly - good selection of ales, what more do you want.

Not eaten here for ages. Been twice in March and have to say the food was excellent on both occasions. Beautifully cooked and presented, tasted great and piping hot. Great service, a couple of glasses of wine which were not at all bad for pub wine and a thoroughly good experience. Will defiantly be back very soon.

Our three Grandchildren came for an overnight stay on Sunday 27th December. We decided to take them out for lunch on the Monday and as it is within walking distance we took them to the Dorset Soldier. We had heard that there is a good childrens menu available.I had the Beef Lasagne, which was piping hot, with salad and garlic bread and my wife had Stowford Cider Battered Cod with chips and peas. Our grandchildren were a revelation. They are always so picky, so I was really surprised to find that the two boys polished off a Lasagne and a Macaroni cheese, while our Granddaughter who is only four managed to clear all of her chicken nuggets but couldn't quite finish her chips. They even had ice cream to finish off the meal. No doubt the "kid's" menu is as good as we had been led to believe.

Went for pre Christmas meal at lunchtime. Very friendly and prompt service. Bit odd as landlord seemed to be only staff front of house. Did waiting and bar but cheerful and efficient. Food was good and lots of it

Having been to the Dorset Soldier for dinner before, we elected to take our visitor from Canada there for our evening meal. Being fairly early, our waitress recommended their special Sunset Menu which allows for two courses for £9.95.Now this is a bargain. My wholetail scampi with chips, peas and carrots was excellent. My wife had the 8oz rump steak, and our visitor had the vegetable lasagne with garlic bread. We all settled for sticky toffee pudding, and this was a really large pudding which was a delight. For an early dinner, if you are in the area, this is a real bargain and there is no scrimping on the portions as you find in many restaurants. I can certainly recommend.

Out for Sunday lunch again and just on a whim as I had passed it the day before we went to The Dorset Soldier. Luckily I booked a table Sunday morning just as well the place was almost fully booked only a couple of tables left and these went very quick people were coming in all the time we were there looking for a table most were quite happy to sit in the bar but the staff were always looking to fit them in most were known to them showing a good return trade.we ordered lunch from a wide and varied menu plus there were specials on boards, Mother went for a small roast pork and watching some of the other roast come out these were in small, normal and large size and as I said Mother had the small even this was a good size meal for only £4.95, I went for the mixed grill, cooked to perfection the steak was so tender even though maybe a little bit over cooked but the knife went through it like butter no tough bits or gristle and the rest of the meat was of the same high standard not a lot left on my plate and great value only £12.95.All in all great food at a very good price served hot and quick by what appeared to be a very small but highly competent staff. To show how good Mother wanted to go back next week so I booked the same table there and then. Not to be missed this place but I advise that you book and if there are people in your party with mobility problems then let then know as half the tables are up steps.

After a long day out on Saturday we dropped in for an early dinner at The Dorset Soldier. The pub was not yet crowded and we did not have to wait for a table. My beef lasagna came in an oval china dish and was piping hot, served with salad and garlic bread. Very tasty, and the garlic bread was beautiful. My wife had the Stowford Cider Battered Cod with plenty of chips and peas. For desert I had the Banoffee Cream Pie which was excellent and my wife settled for the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Our waitress was very pleasant and there was no rush. As we left, the evenings entertainers were setting up and more people were arriving. If you go early on a Saturday, no problem, but if you want a table later on then it is wise to book.

We walked in on the off-change at 6.00pm on Valentines day (14th Febuary '15) expecting to be rejected, possibly due to other Valentines dinner booking, but DESPITE NOT HAVING A BOOKING, WE WERE MADE TO FEEL VERY WELCOMED by Lorraine the waitress. The menu seemed to be Traditional English with quiet a nice range and 4 daily specials priced at £9.95 per person. We chose the Lamb Shank and fillet of Salmon in white wine..The chef knows what he is doing as every item on the plat was cooked to perfection (The lamb shank fell off the bone, Salmon not over cooked & even the veg was the colour it should be AND everything was PIPING HOT.We felt the the meal was very nice & very good value for money, and although the restaurant wasn't very busy, the subtle music in the background made it pleasant....Lorraine was attentive made us feel welcomed.

What a beautiful ambience, then there is the excellent home cooked food. The 3 of us enjoyed a different main course and cleared our plates. David is a dedicated owner, chef and exceptional host. Good wines too and comfortable clean surroundings. Dawn has a lovely welcoming personality.
