The Dogstar in Lambeth

We went at the end of the night on a friend's birthday, we weren't drunk and were let in by the security guard without any issues. When I went to the bar they were rude, and then randomly kicked one of us out, the manager said she didn't know why, then the security guard said it's because one of the bar staff said we had to leave, but that he could tell the bar person was just being a nuisance. Very strange, really bad experience ruined the end of a good night.

This place was there before all the fuss and will outlive it all too. Proper big south London pub for drinking and dancing. Coldharbour Lane has gentrified now but the Dogstar still serving up what makes Brixton the better older brother to chintzy fake-posh Clapham or gritty Peckham. Worth a stop to see how it should be done.

I still have a good time and the facilities are alright, but a little bit of money on improving the general infrastructure of the place would work in their favour.

As someone who knew the "old" Brixton this is one of the only places that remain from years ago... Most of the new places are nice - but none really have the history and atmosphere of this place. I went to the Bowie afterparty [ after the Academy ] and it was good as always - people packed around the bar and on the dancefloor. Was a great night out - as good as you'll get anywhere. For those who miss the old Days - luckily - the Dogstar is still there and obviously going strong. Its a bit tatty around the edges - but that is easy to overlook when the music and vibes are so good.

Came here for a night out and wasnt impressed. We reserved an area and when we arrived the guest list lady was rude and miserable. She told us we were late for our table and that she should of given the table away. The place was half empty so i don't really see her point. Anyway the night was pretty dire, music was so bad cheesy pop and stuff that I hear on the radio. Drinks served in cheap plastic throw away cups, toilets were grim and stunk. As you can tell from my review its not my kind of place...and won't be returning.

The Dogstar is always good fun but definitely a place to come to later on in the evening. We turned up at about 9ish and it was definitely still too early and not many people around. Drinks prices were ok.

I've been here twice now, once with a small group of friends, when our pizzas were average, and a second time when our friends organised a get together of about 40 of us. I don't know whether it was a different chef, because there were so many of us and they were trying to win us over, or that the overall pizza quality has actually improved, but now the pizzas actually *are* worth writing about. We got the super cheesy mozzerella/ garlic pizza (4 pounds) and the vegetarian pizza. both amazing. Hopefully the change is permanent, and not a one off.

Despite having a huge backbar, this place doesn't "do" cocktails. I tried telling them I was pregnant and craving a white russian (that's 50% a lie). I get it! No one really drinks cocktails. i don't- I just watched the Big Lebowski recently and wanted one. Pizzas are cheap, but underwhelming. Generally, traditional styled italian wood oven pizzas are pretty low on toppings, but these were sparse. I think we got about 3 pieces of meat on a whole pizza. And the pizzas were HUGE, which is a positive when talking about cost per serve, and a negative when referring to how much was on the pizza. Drinks were adequately priced and it was a good atmosphere generally. recommended for a casual night out where no one wants a fancy drink.

I've been several times, terrible aggressive staff. I had to deal with an aggressive cloak room attendant. This can really ruin your evening. You just need to go to their facebook page and read the horror stories of visitors. Stories ranging from denying a cancer patient entry because he had a shaven head, to refusing to allow in old people and staff members swearing at patrons.

A very fun late opening pub in Brixton with great music. Perfect for a casual group night out! Not sure if I would hang out there during the day....

Might have to re-visit... last time I went there was just full of drunken kids really ... music is ok but only if you are REALLY REALLY REALLY drunk... which I think what everyone is! No need for quality in that state! Shame really.. lots of potential and nice bar at the very top of the building!

Regularly visit. Love everything from the sticky floors to the hip hop followed by Springsteen - this place is great for a night out.

Went for a comedy night event on a Monday. The downstairs bar is nice enough if understaffed the night we went. Decent selection of beers and drinks, basic decor and a mid 30s sort of relaxed clientele. Ordered pizza to eat while watching the stand up which was in a room upstairs, which was just ok. Massive portion (of pizza base anyway, pepperoni was extremely scarce!) served on a plate that was much too small and the pizza was not cut up properly which made it incredibly difficult to eat while balancing the too small plate on my knee, and trying to tear it into pieces with one hand while holding a drink in the other! I would probably go again but not in a tearing hurry to do so.
