I am a regular at the Norton Dog and can’t fault it. I do Quiz nights as well as dining with family. Service has always been impeccable and food delicious. Special thanks to bar staff especially Maisie who has always served with a smile and complete professionalism I would recommend Norton Dog to everyone. Thankyou to all. .

I find it very refreshing when the manager/ owner of a restaurant tells the other side of the story when people complain… there are too many chancers who think that they can get away with offending hard working staff and bag a free meal … appalling behaviour. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to the Dog. The lovely smiley waiting staff are a pleasure to chat to, the atmosphere is welcoming, rapid delivery of my G+T, followed by Salt and Pepper Squid and then the pub favourite of Steak and Ale pie, … so many chips ( loads of gravy but loved it and asked for more!) … No room for pudding. Thoroughly enjoyed it ….thank you so much.

I should have read the reviews (and the managers snarky responses, Always a good sign ) before we came for a Sunday roast. We were very hungry so we ate it. It was edible. But the lack of love in the food was very depressing. Plain boiled vegetables, no seasoning on anything, no crackling as promised on the menu, Yorkshire that didn’t taste homemade, gravy was definitely not homemade. Not worth £20 whatsoever and we won’t be returning. Don’t fall for the website, which pitches this as a luxurious Suffolk gastro pub. It’s not.

We've visited this pub maybe a dozen times or so over the years (although not recently) and always had a fantastic meal so we were excited to bring some visiting family members for Sunday lunch today but based on today's meal we won't be returning. We booked a table for 6 (4 adults and 2 children), for 14:00. We arrived early and headed to the garden as the weather was glorious and was surprised to find it empty, bar one group eating outside, which in hindsight, should have been the first flag as whenever we have previously visited, it was always been packed, inside and out. We headed inside to let them know we had arrived and asked if we could eat outside but we were told that this was not possible, for two reasons: 1) they had multiple other tables all arriving at 14:00 & they didn't really want to be running Sunday roasts back and forth outside (although they did say we could have desserts outside) and, 2) if they did it for one, they'd have to do it for all. We reluctantly agreed that we'd eat at the table they'd laid for us inside (it was really hot today and with a 5 & 6 year old, we find it easier to keep them entertained outside). We then went to take a look at the specials board only to find there were only two mains, one of which was already on the menu, and one dessert, which was really disappointing. I do accept though that perhaps I had misunderstood from looking at their website, that on a Sunday, all they serve is Sunday roasts plus 4 alternative mains (I thought it was in addition to the main menu). This meant that choice was very limited, especially as they also had no lamb roast available. The kids menu was also off, however, the staff were very kind in checking with the kitchen to see if they could offer some of the items from the children's menu, which they did say they would accommodate. In the end we ordered 2 adult roasts and one kids roast, one kids burger, one kids fish and chips and one adults fish and chips and I couldn't help noticing as I came back from placing our order (that we had to eat inside) that guests who had arrived after us were being served food in the garden?! At it happened though, they brought our food out to us after all but, with the exception of the fish and chips, we all agreed that our meals were poor. Especially when you take into account the price. The roast beef, at £20 was a particular disappointment. Our family member described the 3 small slices of beef as appearing as though it were pre-cut, pre-packed, as opposed to freshly roasted and carved. The potatoes were rock hard on the outside and rubbery in the middle - they thought they'd been reheated or deep fried. The Yorkshire pudding, whilst spectacular in appearance was flavourless and the veg limited, to say the least - a spoonful of boiled white cabbage, one floret of cauliflower with thick, dried cheese sauce on it, maybe 4-5 small batons of carrot, a few peas and 3 or 4 green beans. The roast chicken, at £19.00 was similar - the same small amount of veg, the chicken breast was dry, the small spoonful of stuffing was soggy, roast potatoes were rock hard. I had the roast pork, and would agree with everyone else's comments on portion size and quality and can easily say that it's the worst meal I've ever had here. My son had the burger which was dry and hard. Those who had the fish and chips definitely got the best meal but they also commented that their chips were dry and hard. Once our food was brought out, no one came to check back on us to see if our meals were OK. Whilst we did eat most of our meals none of us really enjoyed them at all and we agreed that we didn't want to order anything else from here, so I went to pay. I wasn't asked if we enjoyed our meal, they went straight to processing payment and the server didn't seem to notice that we weren't staying for dessert or that we seemed to be leaving quite quickly. The bill for food only was £80.00 which I begrudingly paid. We then left and went to another pub to order desserts, more drinks and coffees. Having read other TripAdvisor reviews on the way home, I can see many which echo our experience today which is really sad as The Dog used to be a superb place to eat. The empty pub garden on such a sunny day, the desolate specials board and even inside, it was relatively quiet (the flurry of other 14:00 bookings never did seem to arrive), along with some pretty rude responces to TripAdvisor reviews I read today, all leave me feeling that there's clearly some issues going on here. I have to say that the staff I spoke to did their best to be accommodating but for such expensive prices, I was shocked that we received such poor quality, bland food which paled in comparison to a £12.99 pub grub carvery we had last weekend, both in terms of flavour / quality and quantity. We booked The Dog as we were looking for something special - instead I felt really embarrassed to have brought our guests here. We certainly won't be returning and would no longer recommend eating here. It's such a shame 😢

Highly recommended - very good choice on menu, including options for vegetarian and vegan - and not just the usual restriction to mushroom dishes for vegans! The atmosphere is most welcoming as soon as you arrive, and the manager and his staff were all friendly and attentive, without being intrusive. The manger took pride in describing to us the background to the vegan dishes that our family members chose. Smiles all round, thumbs up from all, and we will definitely be back soon. Well done!!

Meet up with all my nieces for a lovely family meal or so I thought. We ordered our starters and main course, our starters arrived and then so did our main course. I just couldn’t believe what was happening, I said to the waiter we have only just got our starters oh he said and took them away. They bought back our mains which had obviously been reheated, not one asked if we wanted any sauces and three of us had Scampi no tartare sauce came with it which you would think it would for £16, so had to ask for some when they bought it out two of us had one little pot between us, our chips were like rocks. Overall a very bad meal, then to top it all off they told us they needed the table in ten minutes. On paying the guy taking all the payments didn’t even ask if everything was okay which most decent restaurants do. I said to him it would have been nice for someone to just mention it to us when booking, he said most restaurant are like that. If restaurant do have a time limit on tables they always make you aware before booking, I know most places do on a Sunday. Well I can honestly say I will never eat there again and nor will my family, disgusting.

We visited tonight and have thoroughly enjoyed our previous meals at Norton Dog. Though tonight we all felt very disappointed with our evening. The food was lovely as always, yet the service and ambiance was terrible. We booked our table for 7pm and enjoyed our starter and main meal and had finished this by 8:15pm. We were enjoying the evening along with the great Christmas music in the background. At around 8:15pm the heating seemed to have been turned off and so the building soon became very cold- we heard other tables mentioning this too! We overheard one of these tables telling the waitress and nothing was done! When they mentioned this to another guy (I’m thinking he was the man in charge), he simply said why didn’t you say something and when he said they had the man didn’t seem bothered at all and carried on writing whatever he was doing. I thought this was very rude, and especially in the current times, you would have thought any service was appreciated. Also, at 8:30pm the Christmas music was even turned off and they were tidying up around us! We were then under the impression that we were not wanted and so left! It is such a shame as we usually very much enjoy our meal at Norton Dog. Sadly I don’t think we will be returning.

We were on our way to Bacton for a short break, the weather was vile so we needed somewhere we could stop off for lunch and sit inside with our dogs. A Google search came up with this place! We phoned ahead and booked a table (essential)... we arrived to a very busy pub indeed and a table next to us moaned non stop about the poor service and eventually after they asked to move tables they walked out still moaning loudly. We however had a totally different experience and had excellent service! The waitress took our drinks and food orders and the food well.... it was amazing! The gluten free options were ace! I had pork belly and oh my! There was a sudden power cut during our meal which did not affect us but clearly affected the card payments but the staff handled it all well. Lovely pub, lovely staff and deeelicious food! Highly recommend it!

Good service, friendly staff and tasty food made for an enjoyable first visit and promises to return.

We enjoyed our visit to the Dog. We had not planned it, but the weather was terrible and we wanted to seek refuge from the elements. It was on a Friday lunchtime and was busy, but as we were only stopping by for a drink, the friendly new lady 'Mel' welcomed us and said we were welcome to sit on one of the sofas. We just had a coffee and hot chocolate, but as we were enjoying our time, and the weather was not easing, we progressed onto a desert. The pub was then plunged into darkness (no fault of theirs) due to a power cut, so the choice of desert had to be changed, but we cheerfully accepted and seemed like everyone in the pub were accepting of the situation.Covid regulations were excellent, with sanitiser and QR codes displayed for the Track and Trace app.We moved on once the weather had cleared a bit, but this is a great place with a welcoming warm atmosphere.

Best meal of the week. We stopped here on our way back from a break in North Norfolk. The service was mostly good, though you can’t see staff smile, you can see people smile with their eyes and on a couple of occasions we felt we were receiving very frosty service from one of the younger waiting staff. It spoiled the experience a tiny bit. The food was absolutely superb. We had the pork belly & the pie. Great portions, superb flavours, pretty little pub. Advised by foreign waitress on arrival that we could get government deal on meals. When food was served I remember thinking it, was OK, but would not have been impressed paying full price for the food served. Had to go to bar to chase desserts, as we had pre ordered from menu, and waitress forgot to advise kitchen mains where finished and cleared. So as we had to be somewhere I requested Bill at same time. When seeing the bill had no reduction applied, I advised them so, and advised what their waitress hod said on arrival. The next response was let's say an angry barman advising 'we are not doing that and nowhere does it say so". Dissapointed response when their staff are advising differently verbally.Paid for the bill in full and left without desserts. Woudnt go back, and will be advising others of the experience.Maybe worth them considering their approach to customer service, or response to customers advising them of their staffs errors.

My son and I are both so pleased to be able to eat at The Dog again. We travel an hour to visit this pub a couple of times a month and are never disappointed with the food or the level of service. The Dog has obviously worked hard to adhere to the Covid rulings and I have to say we both feel totally comfortable with what they are doing. The girls are clearing tables quickly followed by thorough cleaning. I am pleased to see they are not wearing gloves because quite honestly this is a waste of time when you are handling and touching a variety of items unless you are forever changing and disposing of gloves. Hand washing and sanitising is more important. Masks were being worn the whole time we were there today.Welcome back Norton Dog.

The food as always, is excellent and quite varied. Service professional if a little remote and short of smiles. My main observation, was that apart from anti-bac at the entrance and disposable menus, there was very little evidence that they were taking covid seriously. No screens, none of the staff wore masks or gloves and they made no attempt to stop customers from standing at the bar talking non-stop just a couple of feet from each other and staff just the other side of the bar.I'm going to give this one a miss until covid has gone away and go to places that take its customers and staff welfare a little more seriously.

Absolutely awful experience. Six of us booked for a breakfast. Waited an absolute age to be served. We got the feeling that they were short staffed and the waitress certainly took it out on us. She was very rude throughout. Coffees took about 15 mins to arrive and they were slammed down on the table. 3 were slammed down by the waitress and the owner brought out the other 3 coffees and he slammed them down even harder! We then waited about another 10 mins before we were asked what we wanted to eat. It was best part of half an hour before the food arrived so we'd been at the table for an hour now. Orders were not correct. Scrambled eggs came out on one plate when my friend had asked for poached eggs. My poached eggs were more like boiled eggs and I had to send them back. Black pudding was like an ice hockey puck. I could have been eating cardboard. Bacon was over done as well, I daren't eat it for fear of breaking my teeth! My friend had to ask 4 times for an orange juice. We waited ages for the table to be cleared and half an hour for the bill. And when the waitress asked if "if we enjoyed our meal", she sarcastically said to me "are you happy now?". I will definitely NOT be going there again. I can't say anything about the other menu but if I were you' I'd avoid the breakfasts!

The potatoes were leathery, not crispy as they should be. They had Parsnips on the menu (Out of season and hard). Unfortunately the pudding wasn't an awful lot better, as the Chocolate Brownie was overdone and dry. I have to say I was very dissapointed, especially as we don't go out much as a family anymore. And the final problem was when I paid the bill, I actually added a tip, but not a thank you or anything from the member of staff (Even though the food didn't deserve it im afraid) I was due back at the pub this Thursday with a friend, but alas I will be going elsewhere now.

Orders placed and the drinke arrived, this was probably the best pint of Speckled Hen I have ever had! Credit to the bar staff for keeping such a good beer. Excellent food and quick friendly service. Most tables were in use in one end of pub even though we were booked at 5.30pm.

Great atmospheric British pub. Amazing choice of food and the Sri Lankan fish curry is wonderful. I try to order something else but always go back to it. The staff are very friendly and make you feel at home.

We ventured out from nearby Upthorpe Lodges for a tasty lunch for four of us, and were very satisfied with the scrummy food, all chosen from the seasonal menu. Local ingredients were featured amongst the very good choice, which more than satisfied our varied tastes (meat-free and traditional ham egg and chips amongst us).

I can only reiterate the comments of a previous reviewer as to the very rude owner! His attitude is absolutely appalling and despite it being an okay pub, I will not be lining his pockets with my hard earnt money.

Table for 9 people on a birthday meal. Service was really good, decent selection of beers and lagers, and a good selection of food. The food was served but we had to send one back due to the burger not being well done. The rest of the meals were well cooked and tasty.

I have decided not to accept food anymore when it’s not up to standard we popped into The Dog for a quick meal and both decided on the fish and chips, the chips were so hard and had been cooked to many times the fish which should have had a light crisp batter had a very brown covering of batter that was rock hard and I believe had been cooked to many times, being aware that my wife doesn’t like to make a fuss I paid with two soft drinks over £30 and left without a wimpier what an idiot I am, when I got home and said if that ever happens again and I am not happy with the food and I sent it back would that be a problem, it won’t be on the plus side the service was good

Went for a friend’s 92nd birthday treat. The occasion went well. It was quite busy for a Tuesday lunch. We had to park a bit away in a narrow lane obviously well used by tractors etc.

Never have I ever been so insulted in all my life by the sarcastic rude owner behind the bar after we explained the food was fine but we didn’t receive what was stated on the menu.. not to mention £5.80 for a 175ml glass of wine!!!!! Tasted like a £4 bottle of blossom hill..

Booked for 7 people, service was good, slightly overpriced, but a lot of pubs in small villages are, did get a few things wrong which was slightly annoying and tried to charge £6 for a child's icecream (1scoop) Very busy, maybe would go again if I was passing.

On a home exchange visit to nearby Ixworth, our exchangers said this was their favourite place to eat. So, after a really fun visit to a nearby windmill having an annual fete we drove for ten minutes to The Dog. Thankfully we’d been advised to book, as the place gradually filled to capacity.

Had lunch today for my daughter's birthday. Lovely meal apart from a very large caterpillar in her boyfriends salad. I took it back, and was offered something else, but he wanted the same. It was brought back a very short while later, with a free bottle of fanta, which the waitress leant over my daughter, (while she was eating!) and put the bottle down. He wanted coke, and she went to get him one, of which she leant over my daughter again, armpit in her face. I did point out that it wasn't good practice to do this!!!. My husband paid the bill, I've just asked him about caterpillar gate and it turns out he was charged for it!. I am so cross. Surely the price of this dish should have been taken off the bill. As I said, apart from the extra protein, and the lack of training for the waitress, it was a very nice meal.

Stopped off for a spot of lunch and drink on way down to Ipswich. Only had a ham bagguet + a ploughman's, very tasty. Fairly busy for a midweek lunchtime, which to me always suggests a quality place. Very good, do give it a try if passing or you live locally.

We visited on a Friday evening for dinner with a friend who was gluten intolerant. The Dog has a whole menu dedicated to gluten-free dishes that mirrors the normal menu, which was ideal. The Dog has delicious food with seasonal specials and a large dessert menu. Although being very busy we could t fault the service or length of time it took the food to arrive. Will definitely visit again.

Went here on recommendation of a friend. We couldn't get a seat inside, but were offered some benches outside to eat. Very few parasols, and what there was, was of limited use to keep the sun off the diners.

Myself and two friends had lunch here today. Firstly, I have a nut and lupin allergy, which is a problem to me. The people at this pub bent over backwards to accommodate me, with none of the “we can’t guarantee it doesn’t have nuts in” which I get at a lot of from places. This gave me confidence and trust in what I was eating which meant I could relax and savour what I ate. We all had the pork belly which was delicious and then banoffee tart for dessert. The service was very good too. I will definitely be back and spreading the word too.

The place we had booked for lunch on a Saturday said ‘we don’t do Saturday lunches,’ so we found the Norton Dog, pleasant gardens well laid out with secluded tables and plenty of shade, as it was very hot. Food and drink fine, staff efficient.

I've visited this pub many times, the food is very nice, obviously the inside and gardens are lovely, BUT, on 2 visits now when poping in for a drink with friends, ive not been able to get close to the bar to order because the locals set up theirs stalls around it and block the area totally. This leaves a very small area next to a beam, where everyone has to squeeze into to order their drinks. The bar area is small but they should be asked to sit in or out at a table!

Having enjoyed all our previous visits to The Dog, we introduced two friends to this venue. We pre-booked for a mid-week lunch, and were soon escorted to our table. It takes a time to decide what to eat, as there are so many menus to study, including the specials, on the blackboards.

Never had an issue with this place before but today was poor. Terrible waitress who was a ditz. Two cold lattes, an interminable wait in a crammed restaurant for our mains, so long was the wait that I had to get up and ask where it was as others were finishing their's and they came in long after us. We eventually got our mains an hour and 5 minutes after we sat down. We were so fed up my 11 year old didn't want pudding....unheard of! A shame. Would always recommend usually but now I'd be dubious. It's expensive and that doesn't usually matter as it's normally great. Some of the staff were on the ball but we got the girl who looked at us gone out when we asked for sugar for our cold latte! If you're charging top dollar for pub food, service has to be top notch. It wasn't. The lady who I complained to gave my Dad 10% off of the bill and apologised so good on her for that. Just disappointing.

Surprise vegan burger on the menu which was really tasty. It was a falafel burger and could compete with some of the nicest vegan burgers I’ve tried. The dessert was a chocolate orange pudding which was delightful. They also had a vegan Tagine and vegan custard on the menu. Busy pub full packed menu for non vegans and a good vegetarian selection.

Popped in on the off-chance of getting a gluten free meal. After checking we got a table with a menu with quite a few gf options annotated on the menu. Had battered prawns with a cajun dip which the wife enjoyed. I had the chicken skewer not gf but very nice. Staff very friendly and helpful. Reasonably priced and close to where we were staying.

Very sorry to say our meal was mediocre, which is a shame as I would love to support this community local pub. I felt the menu choices were fairly limited, the only main special was the pie - roast pork and leek, which I thought an odd combo for a pie. I had the chicken burger - the bread was that floppy cheap sort of roll that comes ready cut, the burger was just OK, nothing special. The service was very good however, no complaints there. Maybe we just hit a bad night.
