This needs updating as the place is closed & looks like it has been for quite a while.

Sunday lunch was great. Staff were welcoming . Great atmosphere

Very disappointed, looks very clean n tidy, Called in for a meal on a Tuesday evening but was told had a limited menu after ordering drinks. Left without having a meal,was told menu was limited because of no deliveries from bank holidays. Think management could do better.

Awesome ...food was exceptional and hospitality was friendly and welcoming. Another visit is a must...

Nice pub we walked too from a Nearby holiday village. Received a warm welcome from Barman and his partner. Would have tried food but the kitchen was going through a deep clean. Thanks again Green Mushroom Jumper Man

Left one star because the lady who served us was really nice, here goes... not a restaurant. served eventually. beer wasn't great. fish and chips the worst I have ever had, the batter was bloody awful. the peas were boiled to death. the chips were fried in what can only be described as very cheap oil. don't bother going here, and if you think its me look at my previous reviews, none like this. as for the other reviewers they can only be well, I have no idea. go to the chippy, that wont cost you £75

Hands down the best Parmo i have ever had! All food was homemade, and you can tell, the taste was unbelievable, and the chips were salted to perfection. If there is anywhere to visit for food in Thirsk, this is the place! The owners and staff were lovely, friendly, and welcoming, which made us feel right at home and were always attentive to everyone in there. Next time we are in Thirsk we will 100% be back here

We visited the dog and gun on Thursday 5th jan for a meal at 6pm with 2 familys on a holiday break at woodland lakes lodges. We booked in advanced and was very welcomed by terry and lesley when we arrived. We opened a tab and ordered some drinks. The waiter was so accommodating with our food orders and lesley came up trumps with some gorgeous food. We had a bit of everything of the menu from starters to deserts and all of it was superb. We have kids between ages 1-10 years and soon as the kids had finished the ice cream lesley and terry put on disco lights and some music. We had a right laugh dancing and having fun. Darts and a Pool table also was a nice addition aswell. Would really like to thank Lesley,Terry and the barman and waitress who really made our last night at Thirsk one to remember. The lodges at woodland lakes were a nice little find but the dog and gun definitely were the highlight of our stay. We cant wait to book again for next year just to see lesleys dance moves Thanks again, hope you all have an amazing year as you clearly derseve it with the hospitality skills you have. Xx

Visited this place twice while on our weekend away, both times the staff were really warm and friendly ..... the food was all freshly made and delicious, food and drink all at reasonable prices. Would definitely return ... thank you

Fabulous Sunday Dinner and great atmosphere

My stepdaughter is a fussy eater and wanted a dish that wasn't on the menu they made it for her can't fault the place

Called in here on Sunday afternoon looking for food and a place to park our Motorhome. We were made to feel very welcome by all the staff and enjoyed a fabulous Sunday roast (Beef & Lamb shank) followed by a crumble and Sticky toffee pudding. All of it was delicious and home made. We would defiantly recommend this place. Lovely atmosphere and friendly landlord/landlady.

Super friendly staff and extremely helpful, food very nice ( the staff even offerd too open the pub to make breakfast for us 👍), which we accepted as and enjoyed the food that much!! ( all extra effort from staff ) 👍we were staying in our camper a few yards away and work was being done on it so having breakfast that morning gave us somewhere too sit and wait also get food too,BONUS😀, would highly recommend the dog and gun pub thank you soooooo much too the land lady for your the effort you put in too make sure we enjoyed our stay and a big thank you too her partner everything!!!

Had a lovely meal Friday afternoon couldn’t fault it, called today for Sunday dinner couldn’t fit us a table for 2 but accepted a table for 5 after we’d asked so not happy thought it was rude

Made to feel like an inconvenience for coming in for food, disparaging comments made about dietary requirements and then a racist comment made about my friend by staff all before we'd even ordered. Wouldn't recommend.

Fantastic pub to visit, staff always make you feel very welcome and can't do enough for you. Food is home cooked and very enjoyable. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a welcoming visit with home cooked food in the Thirsk area.

Tired looking ‘smokers’ type pub. Thought we were going to another D&G in Thirsk, but our friends had booked the table, so we couldn’t leave. Food was basic, ok for pie and a pint and to be fair, prices reflect that. Ok for dinner on a budget as lots on the plate. Chairs were at all different heights around the tables in the conservatory. A little attention would help.

Had the Lamb Shank Sunday Roast, beautifully cooked and reasonably priced

From the moment we met Lesley she was friendly and very welcoming. We booked the function room for a wake and Lesley and her team were very good and dealt with us in an understanding and compassionate way. The food was delicious, lots of choice not just your standard buffet. Made a sad day a little better ,as everything ran smoothly and nothing was too much trouble - thank you!

We stopped to get a coffe ,little ok place ,first we thought was a shop from outside, we didn't stop long but the place looks OK, apparently they are ready to have a campsite at the back ,friendly staff we will go back and try something from the menu

From the minute we walked through the door we were made to feel welcome by the staff and the locals. Food was excellent value for money, quality of the food was amazing. Staff made the effort to keep our kids entertained whilst we waited for our food. One of the best pub meals we’ve ever had and would definitely recommend

We are stopping close by so decided to call in and have an evening meal, we couldn't fault it, lovely food, good beer, clean, friendly owners and staff, we will be back before we head home, thanks guys 👍👍

We're staying at the landal woodland lakes and decided to try out the local pub... turned out to be a good idea. Was made to feel welcome soon as I walked through the door. It was a Sunday so they only do roast dinners witch if fine for us. Beautiful food and decent portion size would recommend if visiting the area!

Disgusting management and customer service AVOID AVOID AVOID not even worth one star but doesn’t give you that option to not give a star rating. Myself and 14 of my family booked a few weeks ago for our meal this evening for our mums 60th birthday meal as we are staying at woodland lake lodges and as it was near by we thought it would be lovely to eat there… how wrong were we!!! On arrival we were seated and the landlady came and said hello offered extra high chairs, very nice of her… we didn’t then see her again when the appalling service started!! We ordered drinks hardly had any drinks as we had 3 drinks came flat and they still tried charging for them!! Our starters arrived after waiting a little longer than we are used to but we thought due to the number of us it’s to be expected, our mains then came nearly an hour after that, all coming out in dribs n drabs… the 4 of the meals ordered didn’t come at all even though the waitress had written everything down we had to ask where they were and wait for them to be cooked. Which resulted in the birthday girl eating her meal an hour after we received the first meal!!!! Alone!! . The poor waitress ended up crying as she kept having to come and say sorry!! No management showing their faces!! By the time we asked for our bills all were wrong things added on when we approached the landlord who took the added on extras off as he knew he had overcharged so make sure if you visit to double check your bill he said it was a good Will gesture!!! Laughable really, in all for food was average. The food and drinks bill added up to around 260 quid!!! After the extra had been taken back off All he would do is offer an apology!!!! We weren’t expecting a lot been knocked off but something as they did such a rubbish job and ruined a planned meal… We did tip the lovely waitress who was so apologetic shame her boss wasn’t as polite and thoughtful I know times are hard for the pub industry at the moment but poor management and customer service isn’t going to help this place get future customers!!! Save your money people and avoid this place !!!

We booked here a few weeks ago for last night for 15 of us consisting of 11 adults and 4 children. For my mother in laws 60th birthday as we are staying local. And what a big mistake that was. I honestly don't know where to begin. I will start with drinks we ordered our drinks 3 of which were cokes which arrived flat but 2 were drank by the children so they don't care they are happy they have been allowed cola. But the adult could not drink hers so I persuaded her to send it back in case the gas had gone so they sent her a new one which again arrived flat so sent that back too in which they sent out bottled coke in which they still charged for all drinks and obviously the price of bottles been more expensive they should have informed us of this so we had the opportunity to choose to pay the price difference but to obviously pay for drinks that had to go back too that's a no no. Then meals looked promising when the starters arrived hot and fast but then it all went wrong from there onwards. We then waited a while for mains to come out then only 3 of the 4 children's mains arrived and then adults began and only 8 of the 11 came. They had managed to not do any of the 4 at all so had to place our order again. Can you imagine a 2yr old watching everyone eating and him still waiting. Then eventually the kids meal came out still leaving 3 adults which around 10/15 mins later 2 arrived by this time everyone had finished their meal and then we were still waiting for our last meal for the ladies birthday we were actually out for. By the time that arrived the 2 last meals had even been eaten. Our table was booked for 6.30 and we arrived at 6.10 the last meal eventually arrived at 8.40. Not once did any management come to apologise instead sent a young poor girl who actually became quite upset by what I can only guess due to embarrassment. We were quite sympathetic towards this young girl due to it not been her fault as she came in half way through the service when it should have stayed with the girls that initially served us in the first place as they were still working. When I worked in bar management my waiting staff would be allocated tables due to avoid this whole situation. As management anything like this happened I would have been the one to apologise as the responsibility lies with management to ensure that service runs smoothly not the young staff. When the bills arrived there were items that didn't get ordered on there. When the whole situation was brought up with the landlord he was so disinterested was more concerned about been paid the bill which came to £300+ not even a meesly 10% discount or even a complimentary drink. The landlord also never took responsibility just shifted the blame to the chef. A little customer service education to the landlady and landlord the responsibility as the proprietors lies with you, its your business your responsibility to ensure your customers are looked after. Many of the party wanted to walk out without paying due the appalling service but we are not that kind of people. So please ppl avoid because the customer service is appalling and they really can't handle big parties.

Stopped for Sunday dinner. Good value for money and beautiful and tasty. It was good that the meal elements were tailored to the meat choice. Definitely would come back again.

Food was cold even cold when tried to rectified won't be going again

This was the finish of our car club run, today. Even though the proprietor knew we were coming for at least two weeks, there were only two over worked young girls serving, and despite their best efforts ( and they did really well ), the service was very slow. The Soup and Roast Beef dinner, whilst very tasty indeed, were just about warm instead of being hot. In fact a lady sitting at another table sent her meal back for this reason. It surely can't be that difficult to serve a meal hot, can it?. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was more or less hot enough, and just as tasty as the other food served. It seems to be a ' thing ' these days, to serve hot food at a tepid temp. Lord knows why!!. Btw, the coffee I ordered never turned up, either. The Landlords reply was " er sorry. Is two stars being harsh?. Maybe they were just having an off day?. Until next time...

Disappointed…. Read online reviews so thought we would give this place a try. On a positive note it’s clean and newly decorated. On a negative the food was of poor quality and cold on arrival both my wife and I will not be returning and therefore do not recommend this establishment.

It was a lively pub ..good food

Sat down for dinner in the restaurant, we had to get our own menus and sort our own drinks from the bar. The waitresses were obviously late, and quite rude, slamming down cutlery and very little interaction, we sat with no drinks for half of our meal despite asking for one. We asked for condiments, never got them. The food itself was very poor, the chicken burger can only be compared to a frozen Birdseye chicken burger, you'd get better at KFC. The chicken pie was nice. The chocolate fudge cake was dry and had clearly been microwaved with the ice-cream on, as this was melted and chewy. Seemed an okay pub to go for just a drink, but would not recommend.

Extremely disappointed!! 😞 today I went with my husband, prepared to wait a while as we hadn't booked. The waitress said approx half an hour, fair enough! We bought drinks , then after 3 quarters of an hour, we enquired, 3 or 4 minutes he said, 15 mins later we we're told, table ready. We asked for a menu and we're told, we're only doing the roast dinner today!! I'm a vegetarian, there was no alternative option, all they could do is take meat and gravy off the plate. the manager disappeared, and so did we, 😕 terrible customer service. 😣

Poor service let down a good sunday lunch. Having to wait more than 20 minutes for a pudding is,nt acceptable especially as the place was,nt full.

This place has lovely staff, the landlord (Terry)and landlady (Lesley) are some of the nicest people I have meet. The food is gorgeous and was a very nice pint. Would definitely recommend and will be definitely visiting again!!!!

Went here for a meal on the last night of our holidays. All we could say was wow lovely friendly staff and the food was amazing great value for money.

Could have been much better. Sent the bitter and the Stella back as they tasted awful (pipe cleaner). The on line menu said the fish and chips came with mushy peas and bread and butter, the day we were there it was served with garden peas.

Pub had just reopened when we visited so there were a few teething problems. Had to wait a while to get food and drink, staff kept disappearing including the landlord. Food was OK but not great.

Very sad to see that the Dog and gun has changed hands. We called at lunch time for a drink and food. Ordered a ham baguette which was supposed to come with side salad and crisps. Received a bun, no crisps very meagre salad and when I tried to bite into the bun found that the ham was still attached to the plastic it came in. We had previously booked for dinner at night as we were staying close by. Disaster. We won't be going again. The new tenants have no idea how food, drink etc should be served. If they want to make it work they have to up their game dramatically. No covid restrictions observed.
